    Beautiful showroom
    Will S.

We're lucky to have a business like Hargiss Stringed Instruments in Omaha. Not only do they offer expert guitar repair service, guitar building classes, an ever-evolving showroom of eclectic instruments and gear for novices and pros alike, proprietor John Hargiss is committed to restoring an historic group of Omaha buildings. Now, the intersection at 40th and Hamilton might not seem very significant to most. Heck, it has a downright sketchy vibe to it. But Hargiss purchased what was most recently a carpet store and converted it into a beautiful showroom for gear and guitars (a few of which were built by hand by Hargiss himself). Adjacent to the showroom is a giant and open workshop, complete with plenty of space for the luthier classes Hargiss offers. And adjacent to that is a showroom for antiques and, get this, a beautiful vaudeville theater from circa 1900 that is still in surprisingly great condition (a renovation is well underway; expect to attend many fabulous events in this space in the near future). Of all the guitar shops in town, I take my acoustic instruments here for repairs and setups. Prices are on par with a mom-and-pop instrument shop -- plenty of wiggle room if you know what you're talking about or are willing to barter. Not only that, it's worth a visit just to talk with John for a while. He's very friendly and very talkative. There is no other place like Hargiss in the city. Simply stop by and enjoy the experience.

Coolest old guitar shop in Omaha. Eclectic mix of used instruments. Definitely not guitar center!

I got a 12-string set-up done there. Very engaging and knowledgeable proprietor. They did good work for a very reasonable price.

John did a very good job with the setup and it plays and sounds better after he worked on it.

Add in school band instruments and supplies, sheet music for beginners and professionals alike, enough guitar equipment to satisfy axe heads in a pinch plus a large showroom of pianos, and you have a centrally-located music store that's been serving Omaha for decades. There's also practice rooms on the lower level if you or your kids are interested in taking private lessons from local teachers. I took clarinet and saxophone lessons at Schmitt from Leonard Eby. As much as I hated going there with my brother and dad just about every Sunday for 10-plus years, the musical education Eby provided me with is invaluable and helped earn and keep first chair in the wind ensemble throughout high school. Not to mention build the foundation of a smalltime music career that has allowed me to play on the best stages of Omaha and travel from NYC to LA and play at international music festivals such as SXSW. Going in there yesterday to buy some clarinet reeds for the first time since the early 2000s reminded me of all this. I'm so glad Schmitt is still here. Hopefully it'll be here forever.

Julie was my introduction to the world of western music, and the journey with her has been great. We usually work on one or two pieces at a time. She also makes sure I get the basics right and so we practice sight reading and do some basic warmup exercises every class. So far I've tried different genres such as opera, christmas carols and musicals. We have fun-filled parties at Noteworthy music very often and it's always great to catch up with her other piano and voice students. I really look forward to our gatherings. Julie hasn't confined my music education to just classes. Last summer, we watched a number of musicals in community theaters in and around Omaha. The highlight of the year is our Christmas performance. We sang carols at a prominent hospital in the city last year. I really look forward to my musical journey with Julie, and highly recommend Noteworthy Music to anyone looking to take piano and voice lessons.
