I need to do a review to let other people know about my experience because I failed to find out the value of my baby grand. Rick said he would give me $1000 or sell on commission. I planned on buying a digital this summer and trade in my piano. This was my first day out after Covid and I was like a child in a candy store. I found a lower end digital. It was going to be roughly $1800 my price. I said I would pay $1000 and the rest when delivered. It seemed the movers had Covid and it would be a week before delivery. This should have been my chance to do my homework and look up the value of my grand but did not. On me. When it was delivered Rick never got in touch w me for rest of payment. This was a Friday. When I did not hear from him the next week I went on KK website. There was my Grand listed for $7000. Wow. I also realized that my digital just was not doing it for me. I have played for over 60 yrs. I called Rick and said I would like to trade for a CLP 735 or 745. 745 was my preference as it was wooden keys. He said he would trade even for the 735. OK but he also said it was tied up in an LA port. If I wanted the 745 it would cost me $1300 plus tax and $550 pu and delivery. Why? $800 difference between the two. It seems he had the 745 in stock. Right. What a salesman. Why would he give me the 745 when he could make more money by selling it to someone else. I reminded him he made a lot of money off my Grand. He said not that much. He paid the delivery charge. Again, wow. So people know the value of your item before you sell or trade. I know Rick lost his lease and had to move. I guess he needed the money for the moving. Your welcome Rick. Hope your business goes well since it seems you need the money. Slam. Oh btw I paid the $1300 plus tax but did not pay for the moving. I'm happy w it and will probably upgrade someday. Lastly, I had a friend who had an antique they were selling. The dealer asked her what she wanted for it. She said $100. He said "No, I won't give you that. You obviously don't know the value of your item. I will give you $200. Now that was an honest salesman with integrity. Rick, not so much. It's on me though for not doing my homework. read more

From the outside it looks like the place is falling down so was a little leery of going in but once inside we had a great experience. The man who helped us was perfect. I usually have my guard up with sales people but this guy was great. Very knowledgeable and no hard selling. My piano teacher reccomended them. We got there early and they let us in. Super wonderful nice and patient. We let them know what we were looking for and oh my how sweet it was to listen to all the different pianos. Truly a enjoyment. We were there for hours going back and forth asking many questions and they answered them all never getting impatient with us. The knowledge and true compassion was so good. I reccomend highly. After dinner one evening, we happened to pass by this store, which had a pink piano in it which my daughter HAD to go see of course! Well, she excitedly walked in, and no one seemed to notice her until she said something to us! Just as she told us that she really wanted to buy that piano, all three of the sales people in this store turned and stared at us. I was shocked because usually people who work at a store, especially one that their employees earn commission off selling stuff, would greet people who walk into this store. So, since we were all confused, my husband asked, "are you guys open?" Seriously, their door was open, their sign that said whether or not they were closed was not visible at the angle we entered the store, and their store hours were not listed anywhere on the store front. Well, apparently they were closed because one of the sales people said to us "if you really need a keyboard right now!" Wow. Most places I've been to that value customer service would have said, yes, we are closed but go ahead and take a look around, or something to that effect! I mean really, we may have bought that pink piano if these people weren't so rude, but definitely not now! All those people did when we left the store was turn back around and talk to each other. Poor customer service plus the fact that their pianos are way overpriced does not make for a good shopping experience. Maybe if they had EXCEPTIONAL customer service and expensive priced pianos maybe we'd shop here again, but they don't. At least not on Sundays. read more

Keyboard Kastle: where 'all sales are final' means 'if you have a problem or aren't satisfied, you're completely on your own'. I purchased a Yamaha U1 from Keyboard Kastle in late 2017, and based on this experience I cannot warn potential customers enough: STAY AWAY FROM KEYBOARD KASTLE! Rick Backhaus, the owner of KK, is a smooth-talking slimy salesperson whose selfish arrogance is unrivaled. He said whatever he needed to in order to make the sale (touting all of the musical celebrities that use Yamaha pianos and wondering why I would bother to try other pianos that were clearly inferior to his Yamahas), and he offered no help once I really needed it. I special ordered my U1 in October and received it in November. It was a standard U1 except that it was a Satin Ebony/Black finish as opposed to the glossy finish they typically stock. I made this decision after trying several pianos at different stores, including shopping with my teacher. She favored the Yamaha, and I understand why she did, but I should have listened to my gut and gone elsewhere. The way KK treated me is not her fault; she simply prefers Yamahas, which I respect. The piano was delivered without anybody from KK bothering to make sure it was in good condition or played/sounded alright. It was clearly taken out of the box and brought to my home without any inspection. I know this because inside the piano, all of the tags and foam pieces were still attached. I had to remove all of these before playing the piano. They didn't bother tuning it before sending it out to me (which the other major close-by dealer DOES). I played the piano regularly for about a month, but something just wasn't right. I could look past the tuning, but it just didn't feel/look like I wanted it to. I contacted Rick about the situation. Initially, I emailed him and said that I understood what 'all sales are final' means, but that I just spent over $9,000 at this store and wasn't satisfied. I told him I was pursuing a trade elsewhere on the piano that I really wanted, but that I wanted to check with him to see if there was anything he could do for me. Here is his email response, received 24 hours after my initial email: "Hello Ray, what piano do you like better. I may be able to get one. Rick" I told Rick what I was getting and that I liked the sound/feel better. Then I asked for a second time, "Is there anything you can do for me on the U1?" Rick's response: "Hello Ray, an Essex EUP-123E piano only retails for about $6900 according to the Blue Book of Pianos. I can't imagine what kind of trade they would make you but you are going to lose a lot of money. In my experience you need to play on a piano for months to really get to know one. Then go out and play others to get a fair comparison. I don't know of anyone off hand that would think that was a fair trade..." Rick continued on with comments about how worthless the Essex piano was, how UNO purchased Yamaha pianos over Steinway pianos, and what a terrible decision I was making. Over the course of the next several days, Rick never demonstrated any capacity for understanding or listening. He continually tried to sell me on Yamaha, told me that I didn't know what I was talking about, and insisted that I was making a mistake, even after I had made it clear that my decision to move into a different piano was final. Rick never made me an offer for the piano, even though he was a piano dealer after all. You would think a Yamaha dealer would have some interest in a like-new U1, but apparently not Rick. He never even offered consignment; instead, his comments kept coming back to: - "You really should try the Yamaha for a few months" - "I've been in this business for 50 years" - "I don't stock the satin black U1, so I can't put it on the floor" - "You are going to lose a lot of money" In the final email I received from Rick, his closing line was: "At this point, I'm sorry that I can't help you any further. Rick" Please don't make the same mistake that I did. Take your business elsewhere, where people actually care about you. read more

My husband and I went to Keyboard Kastle Saturday, and we were so pleased with our total experience. We purchased a Keyboard on sale, by the way, from Rick, the owner. He spent a long time with us, showing us the various sounds the keyboard can make (I do not know the exact jargon here---just know I LOVED it!), and he played quite an astounding repertoire of music for the various demonstrations he did. We did not feel rushed, and there was a plethora of pianos and keyboards from which to choose...also an incredible variety of music books and teaching aids. We found Rick to be knowledgeable and personable, and we would highly recommend checking out this store if you are looking for good quality, affordable keyboards and/or used pianos in top shape. Keyboard Kastle really helped me out with a situation with my piano. I had a antique upright that would not fit up the stairs to my apartment complex. I called Keyboard Kastle to see if they would be willing to do a trade for a smaller piano. Greg was great. He was flexible with my schedule when we went to go look at pianos and to have my upright picked up from storage. They gave me a fair trade for my old piano, and their communication with me was always great! read more
