The HD museum tells the complete story of the brand & makes you proud to be a motorcycle enthusiast. The bikes are works of art. The marketing of these machines is brilliant. It's an American brand that has a strong loyalty. I particularly enjoyed the vintage motorcycles & bicycles. Beautiful grounds, buildings & facilities. Top notch all the way around. Definitely world class. I love the modern architecture of the buildings. Every conceivable area was meticulously thought out in design & is maintained well. A friendly staff member greets you at the door & gets you oriented so your heading in the right direction. Nice that they leave you alone while you enjoy the tour. I fact, staff is rarely seen throughout the journey. Even if you have no interest in motorcycles, take time to visit. It's a fantastic experience for all. read more

OK, So I do own a Harley, but I'm not really a die-hard fan. This place moved Harley up a notch for me because of all the history of the company that I was unaware of (until I went through the Museum that is). I had no idea they made boats, scooters, etc back in the late 60's, early 70's, so that was pretty cool. Also, you can walk across the indoor bridge and check out the shop area where they store and do restorations. Wasn't expecting that type of "behind the scenes" access to the place, so that was a bonus. Great way to spend a few hours for sure! read more

The H-D Museum in Milwaukee not only accomplishes this, but exceeds all expectations and delivers what I consider to be the best homage to American motorcycling. Located in the Menominee Valley district in Milwaukee, you are where it all began. The Museum construction and facades give a nod to the industrial roots from whence this motor company evolved. The edgy and raw styling is not lost throughout the entire museum's design. $20 for adults, $14 for students and vets, I felt as though the cost was well-worth the quality of the museum. H-D has done a great job with detailing all the major aspects of what made it the lifestyle brand it is today. From the history of where the company started, to the global company it is today, to the engine, the paint on the gas tanks, the chrome, and even serial no. 1, you explore why the bikes are so iconic around the world. My two brothers and I, who are all motorcycle enthusiasts, spent a solid three hours walking around looking and reading, and without a time constraint, we could have spent another hour exploring and learning about Harley. We stopped by the gift shop, which we all found a little something to take home. We also went to the restaurant which was awesome (I have also reviewed in a separate Yelp! entry). If you are in Milwaukee, like motorcycles, have some time, and/or enjoy museums, this is a must-stop attraction. Having paid to go through it once, I would gladly pay entry to go through it again. You wouldn't expect it of me, or my family, five generations of brooklyn, but my family is actually huge bike devotees. I'm actually the only one who has yet to get my license (but, no worries, working on it). My fiance and I decided to make a trip to the Harley museum while we were in town. From the outside, it looks like a big, square warehouse, which actually feels super appropriate. Walking in, there's bike of nearly every model and year, with vasts amount of information to boot. Forget about being a bike lover, if you're a history buff, it's amazing. There's also a wall holding all the different designs of gas tanks throughout the years. There's even a kids section complete with a mini bike and outfits. As museums do, there's a display of famous Harleys, Elvis's bike for instance and Captain Americas. I also enjoyed the interactive portions, like setting how the engine connected, playing the video games and designing your own motorcycle. My favorite part was where we got to sit on the older bikes. They even had a system so you could selfie! The only disappointing area for me was the actual warehouse. Supposedly where all the old bikes got fixed up. There was no one there, it looked more like a storage unit then anything else with all sort of random ideas including old toys, and no one there. No one working on bikes, just no one. I would have like to see them restoring the bikes, or working on the engines. Maybe even being able to ask a couple of questions. If you are in the Milwaukee area this definitely deserves a stop. If you are a motorcycle enthusiast, even if you are not into Harley's, take the time to check it out. read more

I believe there's two type of people in the world: those that ride a Harley and those that are jealous. Unfortunately without a bike, I have to live vicariously through other riders until I can get my very own. This is Harley heaven. Everything you could want to know about the company is displayed from its humble beginnings in a shed to the disastrous AMF years to the worldwide powerhouse of today. The top floor is devoted to the beginnings of the company (check out Series 1), motor sports and the utility use of the bikes (police, war). The layout is a little off. I noticed I would be looking at a bike from 1920, walk into a alcove and be at 1945. Maybe the audio tour isn't such a bad idea next time. The lower level continued the Harley story taking you into HD in films and the end of the tour features a section where you can climb atop various Harleys in history. I really enjoyed all the aspects of the museum. I especially appreciate the inclusion of women riders and innovators in the museum. Hey we don't all ride on the back! Kudos, H-D! Best part is the "Feel the Throttle" exhibit. Yes, a little cheesy but you get to sit atop a Harley bolted to the ground and actually feel the roar of the engine. Yes I'm easily amused. I'm not really a "hog" kind of guy but I'll admit I was impressed. I was only there for short time so I didn't get to explore much, but what I did see was pretty cool. The "impressed" part was that this is a modern, up to date Museum. I totally was expecting dust, relics, and boredom but they keep everything bright, current, and exciting (at least enough to make you want to explore more). Anyone can easily kill a few hours here, the property has multiple buildings to explore and they are massive. I will have to go back for the full tour next time. If your in in Milwuakee, make sure you carve some time out of your schedule and head on over. The museum is layed out in a way that tells the HD story from its humble beginnings in 1903 till now. Harley-Davidson is one of the defining industries of Milwaukee, so I was excited to check out their museum. If you're a non-biker like myself, you might worry that the museum could be boring, but I found it to be very fascinating from historic, artistic, and design standpoint and aimed at bikers and non-bikers alike. We had the opportunity to go on a Thursday evening when there was no crowd to contend with. The staff was knowledgeable about historical information and details about the collection and shared a few of their favorite facts with us without prompting. The activities and history in the museum was very fascinating to us as adults, but there were also quite a few exhibits targeted at kids aged 4 and older, including a Harley dress-up area, mini bikes to hop on, and interactive computer kiosks. As non-Harley enthusiasts, it probably is not a place we would visit frequently (more of the kind of place that you've got to see at least once), but we would certainly redirect people visiting us in town to go there. As a teacher, I also learned of several curriculums that they offer for school groups who attend, including focuses for history and science (physics), so that is also something to consider if you're a teacher as well, (or just looking for an educational experience for your kids). We brought our 19 month old daughter and she wasn't really the target audience (as we expected) but she had fun strolling around and especially liked when we set her on a Harley at the end. Overall, it is worth checking out whether you're into Harleys or not. It shows a piece of Milwaukee history and offers insight into an American cultural icon. read more

Don't go here unless you have a passion and appreciation for motorcycles. The museum was clean, well-kept, informative...but BORING. I was disappointed and the building looks bigger from the outside. In other words, not worth my $12.00 (and I paid the college student rate!). Also, DON'T take your kids here. There was nothing interactive to do and it was a self-guided museum, so to put it nicely, your kids will want to poke their eyes out by the time they're done with this building. However, the Motor Inn restaurant attached to the Harley Davidson Museum was a pleasant surprise to an otherwise blah day. The cheese curds were excellent! read more

Well i came to Milwaukee for the 110th HD Anniversary and a part of the trip was to visit the Museum. I have to say that this is one of the coolest places i have been in a while. To start the entire grounds are absolutely beautiful and the architecture of the buildings are super industrial and very impressive. With going during the busiest weekend of the year (and only happens every 5 years) it was completely packed but i can tell you even with thousands in there we were able to enjoy and see everything. They break up the museum so that as you are walking through its like walking through time getting a history lesson on the company and on motorcycles in general. The collection of artifacts, memorabilia and media is the most impressive i have ever seen on a single topic. I could easily walk through again and see things I'm sure i didn't see the first time. The grounds are also amazing and give a beautiful view of downtown. I recommend checking out the memorial walls, they are very unique and also the iconic hill climber statue. Also check out the gift shop and cafe. Huge selection of stuff to buy!! read more

HOG members free - hell yeah! Very nice facility, unfortunately they did not have any of the extra tours I was interested in this week. I did follow the advice of the person I spoke to last week and picked up the audio tour - it is a definite if you want some background and history. Let me preface this by saying that I have a fetish for anything with two wheels and an engine. Whether it's a classic Vespa, a scrappy café racer, a sleek Duc, or a ridiculously loud Harley bagger, I love them. Myself, I ride a 1980 XLH 1000 (that's a Harley Sportster, for those not familiar with the Alphabet Soup). I had no doubts that I would enjoy my trip to the HD Museum, but was concerned that some of my personal biases might detract from the experience. See, I've found myself more-and-more annoyed by Harley the Corporation over the years. I resent their constant threats to leave Milwaukee, Harley's marketing and brand has always struck me as appealing largely to the "weekend warrior" type of rider, and their relationship with their workers has been tenuous at times, and downright offensive at others. I ride a Harley, but I'm under no illusion that they're the pinnacle of motorcycle engineering. Now that we've got that out of the way...my visit to the HD museum was a spur-of-the-moment idea. To make a long story short, I was supposed to Washington DC, but circumstances intervened and I was stuck in Milwaukee. I was still in a touristy mood, so I decided to make a day of hitting up some of the Milwaukee landmarks I'd neglected. The HD museum seemed like a natural choice. When we arrived, the place was empty. It was a weird time to show up I suppose. The people at the front desk were so friendly! They pressed for any discounts we might be eligible for. I ended up with a student discount and my father ended up with a discount for being a veteran. It was sort of surprising that they don't offer a discount for being a HOG member (you can become a member of the museum at a discounted rate with your HOG membership, but that does you no good if you're not from the area), but with the variety of other things you can save money on anyhow, I guess it's a wash. The base admission price isn't really that high to begin with, anyhow. Harley has a commitment to their aesthetic and it's apparent everywhere. I was extremely fascinated by every sign and every plaque. There is just an incredible sense everywhere in the museum of the history of not only the company, but of motorcycle-culture. I learned a little bit about the design of the bikes, and learned a lot about Harley's history. I really appreciated that they did not gloss over the AMF years. The museum handles those years really gracefully. They have a room set up with a looping video that covers that period, as well as the eventual revival after the buyback of the brand. They owned up to the poor quality control, the labor disputes, and the damage done to the brand. Like some other people have said, the museum is basically a big advertisement for Harley Davidson--but they do handle the history respectfully. I also appreciated the room where you can sit on the bikes that are bolted to the floor. It gave me a sense of what it's like to be on some bikes that I could never see myself on in a million years. The staff were outstanding. Even the maintenance guys doing some HVAC work (or something) were happy to point you towards rooms you might otherwise overlook. The gift shop--although overpriced--has plenty of variety. I walked out with a small pin to commemorate my visit. read more

We visited the new Harley Davidson museum just a few days after it opened while on vacation from Seattle. Perfect timing. We don't own a Harley but you simply can't go to Milwaukee without taking in all of the local Brewery tours and various Harley Tours that this town has to offer. We had heard stories in recent years that the folks at Harley Davidson had found a virtual treasure trove of vintage Harley's stashed behind factory walls when doing construction at the old plant. It was a treasure trove of vintage Harley Davidson bikes dating back to the early years that were tucked away for future use is perhaps a Museum such as this one. The admission was a bit pricey but we decided it was worth it - even for a family of four. We also purchased the hand held audio tour piece which narrated a good number of the exhibits that you see in the museum. It gives added detail and more flavor to the bikes on the tour and was worth the extra few bucks. (Get at least one) The museum offers a cool search and find word game for the younger kids to participate in while in the museum. My daughter enjoyed it even though initially she thought it was maybe a bit lame at first. It kept her busy and interested during our trip to the museum. At the end you turn in your sheet and they give the kids a free surprise goodie. I can't tell you what it is because then it would no longer be a surprise! As you enter the tour on the top floor you have an impressive display of vintage Harley's starting with the rarest of them all a 1903 Harley. One of only 3 made and the only survivor (restored). It looks like the worlds first moped having both a chain drive and belt drive with a small piston engine up top. Nice fat white balloon tires. In the main hall upstairs you will see row upon row of vintage Harley's starting from 1903, on down to the 1905 into the teens era and 1920's on down. There are many sweet looking yet unrestored seemingly perfect vintage bikes on display. Along the way you can use your audible device to hear the history on some of these cool bikes. There are various side rooms off the main exhibit hallway with individual displays from early 1913 US Mail bikes (with primitive wooden trunk side cars for holding your mail) to a large US Military Harley Bike Section showing various solid green military models. One room has the various Harley motor types on display across a huge wall going all the way back to the early days. With a push of a button you can hear what each engine sounds like. Talk about hands on. There is a cool display room filled with the early racing history of Harley Davidson. Lots of early racing bikes on display set up on a cross section of old wooden bike track like they raced on in the early days. Lots of early Motorcycle Jerseys, silver trophies, racing posters, medal, advertising pieces, pennants, vintage racing photo's and even some circa 1919 movies showing the early Harley racers in action on the track. Interesting spot lights on some of the racers including displays showing the actual metal sole shoes and goggles used etc. These displays are all found on the back side of the huge wooden bike ramp. These displays are found tucked in the back of this room Of course there is a huge wall of painted gas tanks. Just about any color and combo you can think of all back lit. Down stairs there are more recent bikes from the 1950's - 1970's etc. There is the Harley Elvis owned at one time until his buddy agreed to take over payments so Elvis gave it to him. There are a few other pimped up and chromed up bikes on display. One of a kind bikes. The Easy Rider "faithful reproduction" bike is on display also. We spotted an Evil Knievel bike hanging from the ceiling also. They had a cool computer generated screen that allowed the user to create a custom motorcycle on the computer. You can change the color of the gas tank, saddle bags, change the size o the tires, tweak the handle bars just the way you want them etc. It then saves the final product and shows it up on the flat screen where everyone can see it. This was fun for everyone including the kids. The final leg of the tour takes you to a room with a full video screen wall. It shows the open road and other things. That's because in this room you get to sit on a variety of Harley Davidson's and pretend you are on the open road. There are several bikes in this spacious room from 1920's era bikes with stiff leather seats and side cars to newer more comfortable Harley's and a few that could be considered crotch rockets. It was fun to climb aboard a few of these bikes for some photo opportunities. We found ourselves wandering around in the museum for a few hours. It simply takes time to see everything and soak up all of the history of Harley Davidson. There were several displays and audio stops featuring people, past employees, company history overviews, vintage products, leather coats, banners and tons of things to just take in. As a girl who wants nothing to do with motorcycles, and find nothing spectacular about them, the Harley-Davidson museum is something incredible. Although I didn't have a chance to go through the museum myself ((motorcycles don't really rev my engine)), the Harley-Davidson museum and conference area made for the perfect venue for the Executive Leadership Exchange Conference. The venue itself is gorgeous. The decor is modern and trendy, with a bad-ass Harley-esque twist. Imagine cool colors, sleek metals, and simple geometric designs. The rooms vary in size which is great if you have an extremely large group or plan to hold smaller sessions. The staff was extremely accommodating, and as a guest, I didn't lack for anything. The food served was not only plentiful, but delicious. Snacks were served throughout the day. Beverages were always available, and there was a variety of Tazo tea flavors to choose from - my fave. There's also something to be said about the culture at Harley-Davidson and their customer-centric business focus. ((As a soon-to-be I/O psychologist, I'm observant of these things. Geeky, I know)). The staff was beyond friendly, helpful, and could tell they loved their jobs. Even the executives I met were dressed casually, had a laid back attitude, yet still upheld the highest level of professionalism. One major downfall I experienced was in the cafe. They advertise they make and sell Starbucks. The reality is, they only serve their coffee - and only hot or iced. I asked the girl if she could make me an iced passion tea and she said she didn't know how. Ummm - ok. It's just the passion tea brewed hot and served over ice. I didn't push back - I just made my own upstairs with green tea. HDM is a phenomenal venue, and if I was a Harley biker I probably would have been ten times more fascinated by the place. They were nice enough to give all of the conference attendees a ticket for free admission and a coupon for their store. Next time I'm in the area I'll have to give the museum the full tour. I visited this place for labor day weekend. They had a bike rally going on which was a bonus as I could see more bikes. This place has rich history of harley davidson motorcycles. I was impressed with their collection. When we walked in there was a small line and got our tickets with breeze. Then they have free locker service which is neat too. The two story museum takes atleast 2 to 3 ours to see everything. The museum was very clean. One thing that i could complain about is lack of trash cans inside and i stall restroom inside the museum which is a bummer when it gets crowded. read more

we were in town for the weekend for my boyfriend's 50th. we were very impressed with the museum and the staff. specifically: Jackie, Damon, Deanna, Karen, Jim and Audra in the restaurant. they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and acknowledged my boyfriend's birthday. we loved the museum and the restaurant. the food and service were great. he loved the Bloody Mary. and we thank Audra for the birthday ice cream! I don't remember the staff's names in the gift shop (patty?), but they too were helpful and friendly. the museum was well laid out. clean bathrooms. easy to navigate. we had such a great experience there and will definitely be back again, especially in the summertime. please let these staff know that we appreciated everything they did to welcome us at the museum! read more

What a great location. New, organized, well laid out. Just the right size. I'm not a fan of motorcycles, but we were here for their Armed Forces event. With tons of motorcycles outside of the people who came to the event, to the displays of military vehicles and other military items from different branches of the armed forces, to the event items I was impressed before I walked in the door. Inside I found the displays interesting and overall quite amazing. I'm not a motorcycle fan, but the displays showing paint and workmanship through time were really interesting. Check out their shop while you are here for a whole wall full of vintage shirts for only $25 each... a steal for a Harley shirt. So many are so cool it was hard to decide. read more

This was an awesome experience! The Friday before Veteran's Day the museum was offering a special honoring active and former service members. Vets could get in free with one guest... and my sister is a Hog member so admittance was free. I must admit, I'm not a motorsports freak and know nothing about mechanics so I wasn't certain what to expect. I was completely surprised at how much fun it was. The exhibits vary from history, progress, some mechanical stuff, bike racing, custom bikes and even the new colors they're introducing next year. I found the artistry particularly fascinating with all the chrome, leather and original designs. It was also interesting how they are able to marry the functional parts to the aesthetics. As with most museums, the café serves amazing food in an eclectic environment but it's a bit pricey! The gift shop is spectacular and has even the most obscure Harley items... again, you're not going to find any deals in there. There were a couple of minor things I was disappointed about. First, I believe they're called Visitor Satisfaction Reps, weren't as interactive or available as I thought they could be. Not to say they were unfriendly, but I found (when I could find one) them to be almost robotic... as if you could replace them all with a recording on a continuous loop. I had some questions but couldn't find anyone to ask. Second, it would have been great to see an exhibit, even if it were in their special gallery, about the renegades and rebels that helped make Harley what they are today. There were a few photos around the museum that showed some, perceived, "bikers" from back in the day but an area devoted to the subject would be very cool! Overall I recommend that everybody visit the Harley-Davidson Museum at least once in their lifetime!!! Just spectacular!! read more

Update to my prior review! My husband and I visited this establishment again and it was as if it was a completely different restaurant! We started off with the cheese curds for the appetizer which was delish! We both finished every last bite and loved the mixture of cheeses. I got the tomato soup and grilled cheese combo which was truly outstanding! I especially loved the flavor of the soup and paired with the grilled cheese... Just amazing! Yes, I work for the company so I'm biased. I acutally waited a while after this opened to finally take a visit (sometimes after coming home from work I need to de-harley...). When we did go I was impressed by the beautiful location (glad to see some development here!), cool building and interesting exhibits. I expected to be a bit bored by motorcycle bits... but there's enough interaction and buttons for me to push to keep my interest. The food is also amazing! The cafe is made w/lots of recycled things used in unique ways. I loved the cork floor (I dropped my knife, it bounced!). Check out the gift shop for some cool things. I had wanted to come here for a long time. I got in free with the HOG card. There are lots of great bikes, great displays and I could go on and on. If you have a HD, you should come here. It is like the Mecca of the Harley Davidson world. I bought the audio tour and spent a lot of money in the gift shop. It was about what I expected. I went on a Monday so there were not many people. Anyway, if you have a HD, this should be on your bucket list to visit at least once. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I'm not a motorcycle fan in the least, but I really did enjoy the Harley-Davidson Museum. The museum is definitely a place where all Milwaukee residents should visit at least once since it is super beautiful, informative, and well laid out. The boyfriend and I decided to go on one of their free admission days and had a really pleasant time. The most interesting portion and my personal favorite exhibits by far were the ones displaying the initial history of the company and how it all started in a tiny little workshop. We spent around an hour total throughout the entire museum, but if you are more motorcycle inclined/mechanically savvy you probably will spend more than that perusing the exhibits. read more

If you own or admire Harley Davidson's this is a must stop while in Milwaukee. The museum is first class, $20 to get in though. The gift shop had tons of HD gear that is unique to the museum. Worth the stop. Glad we did.. read more

You don't need to be a motorcycle rider or "type" to enjoy this place. This is a serious museum. The collection documents the history of the brand along with its place in the American story. If you are interested in a deeper understanding of the motorcycle's place in the US history this will bE of interest to you. read more

Amazing museum. Vey well done. You don't have to love Harley Davidson bikes to appreciate this. Great history lesson, interactive, informative and spotless. Very cool! Also brought kids age 7 and 9, they loved it as well. There is an interactive kids area as well as a video game section of Evil Knievel challenges. H-D did a really great job taking you through its history and showing off its successes. Whether or not you're a Harley rider, if you're a biker it's both entertaining and valuable to see this important part of motorcycle history. Wish I'd have had more time for some kind of behind the scenes tour or one of the regular programs. The only thing I'd add is a bit more on the internals/engineering. The Engine Room is a good start, but they should consider doing something similar for the other componentry. The cafe was totally chill, the pulled pork sandwich was delicious, and the live blues duo was smooth listening. Great place to hang out after visiting the museum. read more

They operate in direct defiance of Title 1 of the ADA. I offered to show documentation of my medical condition and was told they would still require me to wear a mask. Even though the local ordinance even makes a carve out for people like me. Don't play the "it's for the health and safety bs" when if I were infected with covid, I wouldn't be walking around a museum given my medical condition. You are just being jerks. Brought my friend from England here when he was in town. He loves Harley-Davidson and this was already on his list of things to do when he got in town. The set-up of the museum is really cool and the metal and concrete structure makes for a cool atmosphere when you are walking around. I personally am not a big motorcycle person but thoroughly enjoyed spending the evening walking around! I loved that at the end you are able to sit on a couple of the motorcycles and see how far they have came over the many, many years the company has been around. read more
