Bad experience at Harlingen. I brought my cat in to be checked for a possible respiratory infection on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025. She'd been sneezing intermittently and occasionally sniffling. My cat was assigned to Dr. Aguilar. Somehow, the technician and doctor misunderstood this information and began examining her eye instead. First, they wanted to give her a vaccine for her respiratory condition, then the doctor changed her mind. I was bombarded with jargon that I had to repeatedly ask to be clarified. Even when I explained that I have difficulty handling her (she does not like to be picked up or touched), the doctor prescribed an eye ointment and medication to mix with her food--no antibiotic shot, even though that treatment had been prescribed before. I never requested an eye exam. My cat is seen by the Vet Vision Center, and they are fully aware of her eye condition. And NO, she's not having an operation on her eye (as suggested). It's almost impossible (and extremely stressful) to attempt to apply an ointment to her eye twice a day! She notices the crushed pills and does not touch the food with them in it. Why can't she get an antibiotic shot? She's had them before and they helped. My cat is 15-17 years old, and I do NOT want to stress her with treatments that would confine her to a room for two weeks. I felt that neither my needs nor my cat's were addressed. I didn't feel listened to, nor did I feel my concerns were taken seriously. My cat is an older cat who dislikes being held, and I emphasized this multiple times. I simply don't want to add unnecessary stress to her life at this point. Even during nail trimming, I was uncomfortable with how the techs handled her. At first, they just did her front paws and told me they'd do the back ones next time. I had to insist they trim her back paws. What kind of care is this? In addition, the initial billing quote was about $100. I asked the tech and the doctor to give me an estimate of additional charges, if any. This was NOT communicated to me. I was blindsided when I went to pay the bill upon leaving--$295! I was too upset to argue, so I paid it. I felt like I was taken advantage of. I'm sorry I came to Harlingen--things have clearly changed since I came here years ago with my other cats. My needs and my cat's needs were not addressed. As a senior citizen on a budget, I feel like I wasted $295 on this visit, and now I'll have to spend more to see another vet. This experience was very upsetting to me, and we won't be back. I'm done with Harlingen. read more

I brought my cat, Finn to their practice as a new client. The staff and Dr that I saw was wonderful. I had to return a week later as my cat was having symptoms of FLUTD. I saw a different Dr this time who seemed helpful in helping Finn his symptoms I had to return again as my cat wasn't getting better. She recommended a urine culture and a urinalysis and possible medication to help the bladder spasms he was having. At this point I had spend $1200. I call the vet office 4 days later and explained he was getting better with the medication she had prescribed. They advised another appointment, which I declined because she just there a week prior. I was going back and forth with the receptionist who was speaking to the vet regarding which medication to prescribe. I was promised a call back after the receptionist spoke with the vet. I received No call back at all. Which is extremely unprofessional considering my cat was in pain and very uncomfortable. This practice seems more inclined to make money off you then to actually care about your pet. I washed my hands of this place and have since gone back to my old vet practice.I DO NOT recommend this place at all!​ read more

Have brought our pets there for over 25 years. Their Vets like Drs. Oakley and Smetts are caring and knowledgeable. They only perform necessary care and are cost-effective. Dr. Oakley diagnosed a dental issue in our young cat that was making it painful to eat on one side. He is now eating better, his coat improved and he is doing much better overall. They also helped us euthanize several terminally ill older cats over the years. They made a truly awful time as easy as possible for our cats and us. We even received condolence cards. read more

I am so concerned with this clinic that I will do everything I can to have this place investigated. I want to be extremely clear here so that you can avoid the emergency issue I had with them and their "front desk manager". I cannot express enough how incompetent and callous this clinic is. I called them (they are my regular vet ) for help after we suspected my cat of getting into lilies. Lilies are highly toxic to cats. I was told that they will see me right away AFTER I call spca poison control for a case number and not to worry, they will see me if poison control says they need to. After 30 minutes on hold; and a 100 dollar consulting fee-100 dollars to tell me what anyone can easily discover in a quick online search. They tell me exactly word for word what is found in a simple search of google. Ok. Fine. I get the case number and call the vet back because at this point poison control and google are crystal clear that lilies are highly toxic to cats, this constitutes a true emergency and mine needs immediate treatment. I am then told that they cannot see him because they close in 2 hours and I need to "find some ER clinic". Wait. What? You forced me to call poison control and spend a hundred dollars to learn that my cat could die JUST so you could turn me away?! Can you tell me of an ER vet close to here, even far from here would work?? any help here?? At this point my kids are hysterically crying and I've wasted a critical few hours on this insanity when everyone has told me it is vital to get treatment within the first 6 hours. I'm in such a panic I can't even read the list on my phone, and I'm sick with worry. Everyone is sick with worry except this vet. They will kill your cat and literally not bat an eye.! The desk manager calls me in the middle of this crisis as I'm desperately looking for an ER vet, to discuss the desk employee with me!!! She wants to tell me about her desk person and why they turned me away after promising to see us and after forcing me to spend 100 dollars on what any competent vet would clearly know is an absolute emergency. She did not call back to give me the name of an ER, not to apologize for the 100 dollar consulting feel, not to help in any way with my poisoned cat! She wanted to talk about her employee!!' She then yells at me and hangs up on me because I didn't want to talk to her about anything other than my sick cat! She called to harass a patient during a real emergency? Who calls a distraught pet owner who was just hung out to dry by THEM during the biggest emergency they have faced with their cat to discuss their staffing issue?? I'm still speechless. Do not go to this vet for any reason whatsoever.the staff is horrendous and the vet has no clue that lilies are deadly to cats If you have a cat please know that lilies are extremely toxic and will cause kidney failure. The most critical time is the first 6 hours after exposure. This vet doesn't even know this!! DESPICABLE. read more

What a great experience. This is my first dog and we had our very first vet visit. The office was clean, calm and well-run and all of the staff were great. The vet, Dr. Smetts, gave us a lot of time to discuss behavioral and health concerns. She was very informative and took the time to get our dog to be comfortable and calm. 3 weeks ago I called to schedule a Torn ACL operation for my pit. I specifically asked if we can do the operation on the same day due to the distance for me to get there. At first I thought the reps were working with me as they took 2 weeks to even give me the appointment. I was willing to take the 2 hour ride because of the reviews and personal referral. They said that I can come in the morning for the consult and the operation would be done in the afternoon. I was very excited they worked so hard to help. Bare in mind this is now the 4th consult that I also sent to them already. Dr. Needed to see my dog before the surgery, I get it. After saying the same to thing to me I've heard 4 other times and is already document he drops the worst news- "I'm booked until, October". When I addressed this with the staff they denied ever talking to me about same day operation. Mind you, I specifically called the night before and said "should i prep my pet in any way for the OPERATION". Ok mistakes happen, but then I talk to the office manager Julie and she has the audacity to tell me I still have to pay for the session. When I tell her that I will not be coming back if they choose to charge me ($200 for the same documented info) for their mistake she tries to get me to blame a staff member by asking me who told me this info and then says to me "do you expect the fee to come out of my pocket". Extremely unprofessional I was ready to dish 8000+ at this place and now I will not be returning. What a shame!!! read more

My puppy, Lily, broke her leg a little over a month ago. We've seen every doctor at this practice and everyone has been more than helpful and kind. It's been a stressful process to say the least but I'm so thankful to have this team of vets and assistants caring for Lily along the way. They've squeezed Lily in for multiple last minute emergency appointments and have explained everything thoroughly through out this entire process. A request was made to have my dog's records forwarded to a different veterinarian after having her assessed at Harlingen for an ear infection and an eyelid skin issue. We felt like we needed a second opinion because she was still constantly shaking her head and scratching her ears and eyes. No records were forwarded. I contacted the office a second time to ask for the documents to be forwarded. While on that call, I was interrupted several times, spoken to rudely, and called "lazy" by the receptionist, Dani. After talking to Dr. Oakley about the unprofessional treatment, he assured me that he would get to the bottom of it and call me back to discuss Fifi's treatment in the future. Unfortunately, Dr. Oakley did not call me back and said he emailed me a response after speaking to his staff. Apparently, in that email, he also canceled an upcoming appointment to have my other dog spayed. I never received the email. Although Dr. Oakley apologized for the unprofessional behavior and admitted that his staff was rude and admitted to the name-calling, I was dropped as a client of the veterinary group. He stated that my desire to avoid interaction with the one receptionist could not make it so his group could care for our dogs. read more

I just took my dog here today. The office is clean and welcoming, and everyone was so incredibly nice. I am so glad I found this place. I loved the Welcome board they had with all the days patients names written on it. That was a really sweet touch. The vet was so kind and gentle with my dog. I brought my dog here when he got a hold of a large amount of chocolate. The vet didn't know what to do so she called poison control and they told her to induce vomiting. They gave him so much stuff to make him throw up that it wound up ripping his insides and he was dead within 36 hours. I gave them a second chance and brought my cat a few years later for what looked like pink eye. The vet was all over the place, discussing his dry nose, to the notion that he may have feline AIDS, when we only brought him there for some medicine for his eye. She then prescribed an antibiotic which didn't help him at all, and we later found out after taking him to a different vet that a lot of bacteria are resistant to this type of antibiotic. Why did she waste our time (and his discomfort) prescribing a drug that has a large chance of not working? They have a very nice building, the staff is very kind and patient, but in terms of animal care and knowledge, I think they are lacking. I will never bring a pet here again. read more

Although I am still not thrilled with the way we were treated by the front office staff Dr. Newman is a fantastic vet and so we will overlook other short comings. She did an amazing job on one of our puppies eyes through surgery and she can now see so much better and is a very happy dog. read more

I have been bringing pest to see Chris Newman for decades at Harlingen. She treats you professionaly, and with compasion, you feel she is part of your family. It would take me volumes to speak of all the positives!. I tarvel form rahway and that is over 1 hour away as I and my wife will only trust my beloved pets to her and her staff and collegues. I know what can and needs to be done will be done. Several years ago i had to put down Kelly six months after his brother Murphy died. Plus Kelly had unique issues that she helped us with over the years. It was devistating but Chris Newman and staff were there for me and the hug she gave me after Kelly went to his rest and hers tears told me how much she cares for all her patients and their families.
