My wife has been wanting to visit here for a while and we finally had a free Saturday to make the trip. It was well worth it. While I'm not a big tea drinker, I've got to hand it to Barney & Sons, they've got this tea thing down very well! We started with lunch in their tea lounge. Along with our tasty salads we had the iced tea of the day, an African black tea. This iced tea was terrific with just a little lemon and no sugar. The servers throughout lunch were super nice. Next we went tea shopping. We started by going to their tasting counter. What an assortment. We tasted their iced teas they had samples ready and purchased both they were so good. Next we looked at the boxed teas. When we were wondering how they tasted we went back to the tasting room where they brewed the teas we were interested in so we could try them. This is a great place to take a road trip on a beautiful day. BTW, even if you've been to their NYC location, like my wife has been, this is still a worthwhile day trip on a nice day. read more

Tripartite review for: -- tea shop (five stars) -- gift shop (four stars) -- tea lunch room (five stars with a qualification) This is a destination location for tea lovers. It's not just the hundreds of varieties they have on site; it's the expertise the tea slingers at the counter bring. We thought we knew our tea but there were nuances and details about which we had no idea. The tins are in standard sizes and the prices are par, so it's not quite like buying in bulk, but if you want a variety, this is the place. The gift shop has a nice little variety of tea-related items and a few novelties, plus a small selection of tea-related books. It's a great place to shop for Aunt Gertrude or your tea-crazy friend from art school. The prices are full retail as well, but they can be forgiven for doing a very small number of things extremely well, which takes a certain mark-up in the profit margin. We had lunch as well, and the food was simply fabulous. Tea bread appetizer, buffalo patty melt, teagan sandwich, tea-infused grilled cheese, and a great turkey sandwich. What I particularly enjoyed about the hot sandwiches was they weren't afraid to char the outside of the bread a little. Very deftly prepared and not too much food. We had a pot of tea as well, of course, and a couple members of our party tried their house-labeled lemonade and iced tea, which were also excellent -- the former nicely tart, and the latter among the best iced tea in a bottle we've ever tried. The only caveat here is that the tea room is tiny; there's seating for 14 people in combinations of twos, plus four seats at the tea bar (which is a hoot), and as a party of four we made the mistake (?) of deferring to a group of older folks in front of us who'd arrived just after us on the promise that a new table would be ready in just a few minutes, and we ended up waiting nearly 40 minutes instead (on what the server insisted was a slow Saturday). But we weren't in a hurry and our fidgety parties managed to hang in there, for which we were rewarded with a lovely little meal. We came as a special event, and we were not disappointed at all. Love this place, wish they had more seating or better outdoor patio space but its fun there. View the tea on one side and then other side past the store side is a lil cafe. Some items seem a little pricy (for the lunch) but get a great class of tea, or hot tea, and dessert! A fun stop for lunch in Millerton. The shop has funny hours and isn't open all the time so check before you go, but the room is charming and the lunch choices are always interesting and varied and well-executed. Harney & Sons has a little bit for everyone! You enter in their tasting room where you are greeter by the most knowledgeable tea master I have ever met. You are able to smell an unlimited amount of tea as well as try their daily samples. Once done in the tasting area they have a very quaint retail space with not only their tea but all tea accessories and other gift ideas. If that wasn't enough they also have a cute little cafe in the back to get a bite to eat! Make sure to check in with your Yelp App as they a little special. Their tea is definitely the best there is in my humble opinion. I was a devout coffee drinker however; I find their tea to be extremely comforting in the afternoon. Even better than the tea is their customer service. I messed up an address for a gift that I was sending and they were nice enough to reship to the correct address with no charge. One of my favorite spots to visit when I'm visiting Dutchess County. It's a bit of a drive but it's worth it. I've gifted their teas many times. I usually order them online and they have coupons sent to my email periodically. I've taken friends and family to their cafe and it's always been wonderful. Miss their tea tasting room though! The tea room at Harney & Sons is top notch! While the current dining area has been shut due to COVID, you can still enjoy brunch and lunch outside on tables in the sun-- even if it's a cold winter day, the hot tea will definitely keep you warm! The staff is beyond friendly (you can tell the family really takes pride in their teas and treats), the food is excellent (I had a homemade scone that was actually moist!), and the location is central (you can walk on the rail trail if you prefer to drink your tea on the move). I would recommend the chai tea, which is made fresh to order, and the scones and cookies that I believe are homemade daily. There is so much tea here that you will never be able to try them all. Each is very high quality. I enjoyed tasting what I could. But, I wish they offered a flight of teas like they do for wine at vineyards. My wife and I went for lunch. The restaurant is extremely small and the service is deliberate. So plan on taking time. We have enjoyed lunch and tea + scones here many times. Their food is sort of "fancy" ... Premium small sandwiches, gourmet soups and a few foo-foo hot dishes. They're all pretentious and yummy. Desserts include tea and scones, which are delightful. Today, we found new menus. Same selections. But somewhat higher prices. And the formerly white-flour scones are now mixed with some whole wheat (Same great taste). Heretofore, you might say this is an excellent review. I would have liked to give 4 stars, but the one-time demotion was due to today's somewhat inattentive service. We sat outside at a time when the crowd was thinning. First, we waited too long for the server to take our order. Then, about half-way through our meal, we had to walk inside to ask for refills on the water. When coupled with the price increase since our last visit, I had to demote the number of stars from 4 to 3. Harney has been a lunch and tea- shopping stop along route 22 for more than 20 years. You're warmly greeted with the tea of the moment as well as 2 other teas being steeped and then given the choice of one more tea (per person) to be personally steeped for you. We enjoyed a nice oolong tea and Love Life. Both were delicious. After the tasting we went for brunch. This quaint tea shop offers an elegant twist and brunch classics. We had the Collier; smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, lettuce, and vegetables within artisan bread. It was plated with large homemade crisps. We also enjoyed the King Arthur. A twist on eggs benedict plated with a side salad and home fries. It was all perfectly prepared, plated, flavored, and enjoyed. We also ordered a large pot of White Christmas tea, a white tea that complemented the meal perfectly. If you find yourself near this beautiful, small town getaway we highly recommend stopping by for a spot of tea. read more

I just went here for the first time over Thanksgiving. I'm not a huge tea drinker but I do enjoy the occasional cup. This tea, however, was amazing. They have a very cute little shop with all the loose tea and tea trinkets you could ever ask for and then there is a tasting room (that smells amazing) where you can taste the different teas before you buy them. The people who work back there really know their stuff and are even able to suggest other tea you might like based on your tastes. When we came in we wanted to get some lunch at the cafe area but the wait was about 45 minutes which is why we went and tried some tea and bought some tea in the gift shop. The cafe area is small with only a few tables but it was worth the wait. We got some sandwiches (most named after the Harney sons) and some tea for the table. I had a delicious Iced Chai with my sandwich. I don't remember all the food in specifics but we shared a fig (and possibly prosciutto) appetizer that was amazing tho hard to share because it was hard to cut. And 2 of us got sandwiches with I believe soppresata and goat cheese. All of the sandwiches came with sliced cucumbers (a very nice side dish) and a bunch of potato chips tho not an overwhelming amount. It's about the amount that you SHOULD eat but usually can't make yourself eat only that many. So I appreciated that. All of our food was really good and the tea is simply amazing. it's only about 2 hours outside of NYC so if you have some free time on the weekend it is definitely worth a trip. read more

This was my first visit to Harney & Sons in Millerton,NY. I drove from Brooklyn, NY to try this place. I was mostly disappointed with my dining experience, but I gave them 3 stars because they have an awesome tea tasting room. I had the "Fin" sandwich it was a grilled tea cheese on whole grain bread and that came with potato chips ($8.00) but they charged me $1.00 extra for a slice of tomato. The sandwich tasted pretty good. I had a small pot of Rose Scented tea ($4.00) which was plenty I got 3 cups of it. We order the tea cheese sampler, I guess I expected a plate with a few pieces of cheese, what we got 4 slices of baguette bread and an equivalent to a slice of melted cheese on each slice of bread. The cheese tasted ok, but there wasn't enough cheese on the bread to make a real judgement, but It sort of tasted like melted parmigiano cheese crisps. I ordered the scone plate ($5.00) which came with 2 really small scones. They were the size of chips ahoy cookies, mostly flat, and they tasted like biscuits. They were the smallest and least flavorful scones I ever had. I had the carrot-lemon cake ($6.00) it was a about the 1/3 of the size of a regular slice. I shared it with 2 others, I basically only had a forkful. The best part was the tea tasting room it was really a nice setup, with many varieties of tea. They brew any sample for you to taste. I ended up spending $22.00. Overall I Was disappointed with my experience. If I'm ever up that way again, I'll probably go only. For a pot of tea and maybe some toast, and eat someplace else. read more

In the tasting room, there will always be at least 2 teas to sample, and they'll make one complimentary brew of another tea for you to try. Their cafe offers light meals paired with whatever teas interest you as well. The store area includes all their teas packaged as loose leaves, bags, and sachets, as well as interesting tea accessories, snacks, books, and decorations. Disappointed. I've been meaning to get up to this store for years and when recent travels took us through town I had to jump at the chance to hit it up. We pulled in around 4:30 on a Monday, 30 minutes before it was closing. We went to the big tea room with high stacks of tins of tea. On the counter were 2 teas, a Taiwanese Oolong and a Chinese green, maybe a dragonwell or something. I asked for the price of the Oolong, and it was $87 a pound. Well I took it and a few other things to the counter and, lo & behold, the register racked up $144 for the pound. When I told her the display tea was given to me for $87, she went back to the back, confirmed that this was the case, and promptly told me she would not honor the price. Now I don't know what's right nor what's wrong in all of that, but I would think that they would be somewhat obligated to honor the price they advertised. Sadly they did not. I ended up with 3 tins of tea. They're nice, cheaper black teas that taste fine. I've been buying teas from all over the world for years now so nothing here is going to blow me away. Obviously the shop is there for the sake of presentation and honestly it's a great shop in that respect. Of course it's a bit overpriced, but it's a store front and the stock is impressive. It's a nice shop. But I have to review on user experience and after this one, it was just ok. I hadn't ordered online from them before and I won't be ordering online going forward. The selection is nice but it's nothing more than a dozen tea shops online can give you and for a higher price. The 2 different tea rooms are cool, and the shop is nice inside, but it's expensive and of course, after my personal experience I won't go back there. Overall nice, but overpriced and in the end, they did not treat the customer, at least this customer, well at all. read more

I want to like the tea room, but I've been a few times and it is really disappointing. I ordered the tea & scones. The tea was made immediately, and the scones turned up about 30 minutes later - and I had pretty much finished the tea. This is ridiculous. Tea and scones go together, you don't need the tea first. It's not like they were out back making the scones, either. The tea room has no atmosphere, they use really loud and annoying timers for making sure the tea is steeped for the correct length of time, so they are always going off. There is no music to cover this irritating noise. Unimpressive service - the people behind the counter act like they are doing me a big favor by taking my order and brining place settings. I don't need special attention or to be waited on hand and foot, I just need average attention in a timely fashion. The tea is good. read more

Came to Harney & Son's on Valentine's Day looking for some tea and a bite to eat. However the kitchen closes early on Sunday's and we just missed the food. The tea selection is extravagant. Any and everything you could want (that is if you like loose tea). The loose tea room was overwhelming and I do not feel as if the staff in that room made us feel comfortable to try the teas or anything like that. The gift shop where they sell "sachets" or tea bags (lol) was quaint and had a great selection. They also had beautiful tea sets and wonderful pots. I went with a sampler and a box of green tea with coconut. The cashier gave us a small sampling of their Valentine's tea to take home, which I thought was a very nice touch. Went on a weekday with very hungry kids - my fault. Waited 40 minutes for lunch - are you kidding me?? I started praying...please God, just bring the freakin' food! I had a chicken caesar - tender chicken - not worth $14 IMHO. One child had the vegetarian curry - she liked my salad better. Other child had sliders - they were on the rare side, but he was ready to eat his arm raw, so it went unnoticed. He liked the side salad - it was undressed, but he is fine with that. I had iced tea - no one offered me sweetener, so I did without. Wasn't sure who our waitperson was - had two, neither on the ball, though nice demeanors. The main room where the tea is sort of looks like what I picture an apothecary looks like with wall full of drawers of tea. Then there's a little gift shop area and then a cafe' area. I had wanted to visit this shop and cafe for the longest time since I really enjoyed their tea products and attended a tea workshop the owners held at the International Culinary Institute. I walked into the tea cafe and was ignored. I was not greeted nor offer any service. Since it appears that it will not be a pleasant experience to dine there, I went to the shop to check its merchandises. Again, I was ignored. I browsed around and selected items I wanted to purchase. I went to the counter to pay, and the cashier who assisted me offered no greetings - no "Hi, how are you?," or a smile. She did greet and smile at the person who paid after me. I wonder if it is because I am Chinese or wasn't dressed like their usual customers that they didn't treat me better. This visit was just sour and disappointing. The shop owners that I met at the tea workshop seemed like really nice people. It just puzzles me that the employees they have at this shop have such poor customer service skills. My brother who lives in the nearby Hudson Valley recommended a visit. Unfortunately, our trip to Millerton and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail were cut short due to (badly needed) heavy rain. Nonetheless, sitting inside the small dining area was a perfect way to ride out a storm and enjoy a simple, pleasant lunch. I'd read the online menu beforehand, so I had an idea of what to expect. My friend and I enjoyed well prepared sandwiches that were a tasty step above standard lunch fare. We each chose a grilled sandwich on a hearty multi-grain bread. I had the Finn, with a heavenly rich melted sharp cheddar cheese with bacon and tomato. The crisp, fresh-from-the-garden cucumber slices were a nice treat. Our friendly young waitress did not hurry us along, which we appreciated since we had to wait a while before it stopped pouring. I also picked up a few teas as gifts to friends. Because the tea shop, store, and cafe are all fairly small, they can quickly fill up when large groups arrive all at once. Patience and mutual consideration among the customers are therefore necessary. read more
