Harper Greer is a great addition to Fiesta Square. Stylish, classy clothes for women who don't want to look like they just walked out of a chain store. I popped in with nothing specific in mind. Just happy to see that there was a new women's clothing boutique to replace Specialtees which closed some time ago. I had a warm welcome from John, the co-owner of the store. Although I saw A LOT I liked, I left empty-handed. And yet I have no doubt I will be welcomed back -- unlike some stores where they seem to take it personally if you don't buy something. I think the reviews way overstate the actual clothes here! I'm an old fuddy duddy and even I think these fashions are a bit out of fashion! The clothing here caters to the older-lady set, as my kids say. My daughter has come here with me a few times and has made me put back all the items I pick up, LOL! That said I've found a few pieces that are nice - big summer dresses and jackets with lots of color. The owners seem super nice. read more

Customer service at its best! First of all recently found the perfect 'fun' dress for my son's wedding there. Can't say I've ever received so many compliments!! But the reason I'm writing ..... I receive their emails and saw a cute top which was featured. Decided to be lazy and ordered it on line. What a beautiful boutique! I stumbled across this fantastic store while waiting for an event at Izzy's Steak House! Owned by a husband (concert pianist) and wife team! What a breath of fresh air. I felt compelled to buy something purely out of the great customer service! To be honest the quality of clothing is fabulous and sells itself! They specialize in women's clothing in slightly larger sizes. I immediately jumped on the chance to buy my Mom something special that she normally wouldn't purchase for herself. The prices are fair. I thought I was going to be paying over $100.00 for a pair of linen pants but that wasn't the case! I ended up picking out the same outfit displayed on the wall by accident! Subliminal message! Lol! I love the carefully curated selection of clothing they carry. There are so many reasons why I love the store, but a very important and timely reason is how safe it is to shop there! I bought a dress from Harper Greer's website to wear to my son's wedding, and realized that I needed a wrap to go with it. I sent John an email telling him which dress I bought and asked if he had any suggestions for an appropriate jacket. Not only did he answer me promptly, he sent pictures of suggested items and offered to order something different if I preferred. His suggestion was exactly right - I called and bought the jacket and he put it in the mail right away. I have fallen in love with the clearance rack at this place. I scored a silk skirt here for $30. It's pretty and swishy and perfect for those days when you've got a dinner date right after work, dressy, but not stuffy, feminine but not too girly for the office. I have been shopping with John at Harper Greer for nearly 20 years. When we started shopping there, most people thought SOMA was only for the daytime hours. Now, 4th Street is trendy and HG is sandwiched between two great restaurants. Big News- they are moving uptown to Sutter and Powell, so shopping just got easier. (PS- Store on 4th Street in Berkeley also, but smaller!) I go for classic and elegant clothes most of the time and HG always has something for me. Mostly business and dressier pieces. Terri has also developed some sporting looks and my wardrobe is sprinkled with those also. Wool, linen, silk, cashmere are the basic fabrics, with some denin mixed in. I have some suits I bought more than 10 years ago that still look great and I am hard on my clothes! Big size clothes usually come in lousy fabric and fall apart! Not here! They have also got nice accessories too- scarves, jewelry, coats, hose, etc. The shop is elegant, the staff are great and Joseph the tailor works wonders. Spacious dressing rooms and honest opinions can always be counted on. Plus- they always have a sale rack in the back for off-season deals. read more

I came in looking for something to wear for a specific reason/occasion and John had lots of ideas right off the bat. Within a minute or two I was already trying on options he was pulling off the racks. I love his warmth and humor and dressing room side manner. I ended up getting more items than I came in for and I'm super happy for it. Yes, it's more expensive that your average Big Box Store, but it's completely worth it for lovely, interesting pieces with quality materials and workmanship. I can't love John, Terry and Harper Greer any more. Finally an excuse to go to their new Oakland store. John is the best, and I hope he makes room for the piano, because I love it. Terry's clothes beautiful as always. I had the perfect interview outfit within minutes, but stayed to get a couple more pieces. The first outfit I ever got from them in 1995 lasted 10 years. I have not been to Harper Greer in 5 years but my closet is full of their clothes looking really great. Quality and the best customer service in town. Can't wait to come back. You may get sticker shock, but if the blouse, pants, jacket lasts 10 years and still looks good, just pay the money. They also have a great sale rack. Harper Greer is a unique, beautiful shop selling lovely, quality larger sized clothing. John, the owner, is absolutely charming and very helpful. I found a number of items to buy in his shop. I would visit again and again except I live in London, however he said he would ship items to me so I will keep checking online. Not only was the environment and clothing great, when asked about the grand piano in the corner of the shop, he promptly treated us to some of his lovely playing. I went here once hoping to find a pair of plain black pants but all they had were stylish (read feminine), flammable, gauzy, numbers that buttoned on the side and cost $200. That said my wife has found some lovely things here on sale - a black silk ruffly jacket and skirt, shells, skirts, pants, etc. She bought at least one interview suit here for several hundred dollars (ouch!) but she did get the job (!) and it has held up well. This is not the crappy disposable clothes that one finds at the Avenue or Lane Bryant. read more

While I love the overall style of the clothes, it can be hit or miss in terms of what works for me on any given visit. John and the entire staff were extremely helpful. John even walked down to the fabric store with me to see about choosing a different fabric from those they carried. This place is pretty amazing. I had no idea it existed, and stumbled upon it by chance while my boyfriend was in a meeting in the area. However, I'm quite glad I found it. Harper Greer is a beautiful store with a nice selection of plus sized items. Most that I saw were on the dressy side, though there were some wild looking jackets in front! John was super nice and told me about their sizing system and how all their clothes are made in San Francisco. How cool is that? I'm a cheapskate, so I scoured the clearance rack, and got a lovely seafoam green top for 49 bucks. Nice style, good color, and you can just tell it's quality. If I had to compare the overall cuts to any other brand, it'd be Eileen Fisher, and yes, the items are about as pricy, but seriously, if it fits and looks good, who cares? Plus size ladies, more and more, are having a hard time finding clothes that are made with quality and care, and I can say that Harper Greer is definitely crafting clothes with care and attention to detail. It was a true pleasure. They also have a nice selection of scarves and jewelry, and it looks like they carry the Not Your Daughter's Jeans as well. read more

I found HG by accident many years ago while looking for a restaurant I wanted to try. Ended up loving the restaurant and HG so it was a lucky day for me! I hate shopping, and entered the store with trepidation, but I found the sales staff to be helpful yet not intrusive, and over the course of several visits, John (one of the owners) grew to know my tastes and could quickly point me in the direction of styles I would like. As another reviewer has pointed out, the quality of the clothes you get from HG far surpasses that which you get from other local 'large woman' venues. 99% of the clothes I wear to work every day has come from HG. Yes, they are expensive, but their quality is such that you can wear them week after week for years. They use expensive and heavy weight cloth and finish their seams with great attention to detail, so the clothes stand up well to repeated wearing and dry cleaning. (Many of the clothes say i can wash them, but I play it safe and dry clean them as needed and they have served me well.) I have found their clothes to be well worth the investment! I have gotten many compliments on my clothes over the years. My coworkers can tell that these clothes are not typical 'off the rack' clothes. The styles and the cloth used are unique and you won't find either anywhere else. When one of their shirt styles that I loved began to not be popular enough for them to produce regularly, they were open to the idea of making them for me as long as I provided the cloth! They will alter not only pant length, but sleeve or shirt length as needed and will do any other quirky thing I come up with! They are very flexible folks. I recommend them to friends all the time and will continue to do so. They are a great business with a great product and I feel lucky to have found them. read more

Pros: I shopped at HG for years for work clothes and always when I had a special event coming up. Timeless styles! Fabrics you won't find anywhere else! Icing on the cake at HG is great store decor, fabulous accessories (scarves & jewelry), in-house alterations and Jon's corny jokes. I always look for similar shops when traveling and there are none- HG is unique. Their custom-tailored pants and "Lucy" blouses are still among the favorite pieces in my wardrobe. When you've reached the point where you'd rather spend $80 on one blouse that fits well, looks great, and lasts for years instead of three H&M blouses that make you feel fat, frumpy and cheap, this is the place to go. Lots of comfortable and attractive work wear and special event clothes, especially if you are plus size. They carry a wide range of lines, so if you don't like the look of the stuff on one rack, you still might find your new favorite brand on another rack. While I was there, two men were picking out dresses for one of them; there were sizes and styles that fit him well, and John the owner was offering the same *really helpful* and body-positive service that he gives everyone. Timeless styles, contemporary fabrics, and the best quality clothing construction I have ever seen. My mother was an expert seamtress and all of her "secrets" and "special touches" that made her pieces last are found in every item I buy at Harper Greer. Of all the clothes in my closet (and, yes, I am a clothes-hound), my Harper Greer purchases are the best-made, long-lasting, and well-fitting.
