When I think of Harris Ranch, I think steaks. That's it. Never would I have thought their bakery pumps out some delicious pastries and desserts. The bakery is part of the country store, which sells such random housewares and souvenir-type stuff. They have a chocolate truffle case on one side and the other side, the pastries and desserts. The pastries looked delicious and I got a few to try. They also have bags of day-old cookies for a good price. Eclair 4/5* I'm not a huge fan of eclairs with the soft fudge on top instead of the hardened chocolate. Taste wise though, it was a good eclair. The cream isn't overly sweet and the eclair itself was a light dough. Napoleon 5/5* If there's something Harris bakery does right, it's flaky pastries. Surprisingly, this Napoleon stayed crispy the entire drive home and survive even in the refrigerator the next day. Many others I've had usually get soggy, but these layers of puff pastry stayed crisp to the end of every last bite. The cream was fluffy and not too sweet, and paired perfectly with the ripe strawberries. Banana Cream Pie 3/5* I love anything banana and just had to get it when my eyes landed on the perfect swirl of whip cream covered in chunks of buttery crumbles, atop a neat little mini pie. However, the pie itself was too mushy. The crust was soggy, with the smoothness of the banana cream, soft banana slices, and rich whip cream, everything combined was too much mush. It was also too sweet. I did enjoy the crumble on top though. That was the only saving texture. Strawberry Cream Horn 5/5* Wow these were so unexpectedly delicious! The horn is super flaky and delicate, filled from end to end with a light strawberry cream. On top, bits of dehydrated strawberries were not only beautiful but added a nice tartness and texture, contrasting with the silky cream. This was a great upgrade on your classic cream horn. Chocolate Chip Cookies with Walnuts 3/5* Nothing special. They tasted better the longer they sat out because they were crisper. I prefer my cookies to have sea salt for that good balance of salty and sweet, but these cookies were just one noted. Next time, I have my eyes set on this towering cake they had on the counter and of course, take home some of those yummy cream horns. read more

This is a must stop for me when traveling these parts on Interstate 5. This stretch is pretty desolate with scattered towns set off from the Interstate. So clean , relaxing places to stop are few and far between. Harris Ranch has 3 main areas: (a) a gas station with a mini mart and BBQ to go counter, EV chargers, and public restrooms; (b) main enclosed building has this Country Store, Prime Steakhouse, Ranch restaurant, Horse Shoe Lounge Bar, and public restrooms. In the summer with triple digits, that air conditioning in the main building is sweet relief. Tesla chargers are outside the main building Luv that the parking lot has shade trees and grassy lawn that even your dogs can take a potty break; and (c) the hotel is a separate complex towards the east parking lot. I usually stop here to use the restrooms in the main building. The restrooms are open to the public and are clean and well maintained. And yes, I also stop in to check out the Country Store. They sell gifts, home decor, boutique clothing, local wines, and artisanal snacks. One man's kitsch is another man's treasures. Also within the shop is a chocolate confection counter, a meat counter selling vacuum packed Harris Ranch meats, and a bakery counter selling cookies, pastries, cakes and pies. The chocolate counter and bakery counter are the reasons I drop into the store. There is a gluten free pecan drop cookie that is sooo delicious, and I always buy one. But on this particular visit, it was sold out already for the day. Not surprising since that is the only gluten free bakery item and they are fantastic tasting...pecan, buttery, and brown sugar goodness. I can eat gluten and eaten my fair share of baked goodies from here, all so good. read more

Very charming store, with outlandish prices! I could easily give this visual treat of a shop four and a half to five stars, but my wallet is still smoking four days later thinking about what we bought and what we received for the price paid. A simple example - I use saucer-sized plates on our home coffee bar to hold the mugs while I'm doctoring them up with cream and sweetener. They are decorative ones that I change out seasonally. I've collected a few different sets over the years, often at a popular housewares store. I can usually get a set of four for $9.99 or $11.99. At the Harris Ranch Country Store, one small decorative plate was $12.99. Each. So a group of four would be $52?! They weren't that cute. Well, they were adorable, but not a realistic price. While I briefly wandered through, Dear Hubby was purchasing a couple of pastries for himself, and a marshmallow krispies treat for me. His two sweet pastries came to over $15 (enough for at least a half dozen at the local donut shop), and my S'Mores treat (imported all the way from Virginia) was $8.50. Good grief! This is the definition of Highway Robbery! Our first clue should have been that the price of regular gas at their station was $5.79 when we had paid $4.19 before we left SoCal. That should have prepared me for the prices at the Country Store. I can just imagine what they're charging for meal in the restaurant. Took a road trip and had a pit stop here since it gave me an opportunity to stretch my legs. The general areas are open to the public so I grabbed a slice of cheesecake and apricot pastry from their bakery and ate it in the patio area. The staff was friendly and helpful and helped open the doors to the patio space so we could enjoy the pastry and dessert! The pastry was good and the cheesecake was ny style which meant it was dense so I only took a few bites since I didn't want to calorie overload while doing a longer drive. It was good though! Oh my god WHAT HAPPENED to the store??? We loved going in there browsing all the wonderful season related houseware and decorative items and all the treats handbags from Brighton and dig articles ... We've always wanted to stop here on the way up north. Something about the feed lots located in Coalinga doesn't present itself to a pleasing visit. But we finally stopped to check out the Country Store and purchase some steaks. First, the employees were terrific! So courteous and friendly. The steaks are pricey, but we picked up a few to bring home. Keep an eye out for the 1/2 price cookies. They are packaged in a bag and displayed on the countertop, we bought Snickerdoodle and chocolate chip; marvelous treat! Large size and perfectly baked. Once inside, you no longer smell the neighboring feed lots. The interior of the building is beautifully decorated. On a cold and foggy day, the warm cozy atmosphere was a welcomed break from the road trip. read more

Highly disappointing to see the Country Store as of late. We have been going to Harris Ranch for as long as I can remember and I am 52 years old. It feels like our home away from home as we go back and forth from Northern California and to visit our family in Orange County. We always LOVED seeing the store and its unique gifts that filled the entire place. For some time, there looks to be maybe a quarter of what they used to have. So sad... I used to come and find a lot of my Christmas gifts for people during the holidays. This past Christmas, I went in and the place looked desolate. I was confused and wondered if I missed it all? I don't know if Harris Ranch is not doing well, but it really looks like they're struggling if you look at the empty feel of the store. We just left the shop now on our way back down to Southern California and once again shocked and highly disappointment. It was bad.. I really hope that whatever happening there gets better so that the store can return to the gorgeous shop that it once was. read more

I love fruit tarts, and go to bakery all over when I travel and get a fruit tart. These fruit tarts are amazing. There's a shortbread base that is buttery and flaky. The filling is light and creamy and beautifully topped with fruit and glaze. I don't know where they get their fruit tarts if they make it there or if they source it somewhere else but I would definitely come back for these fruit tarts in a heartbeat. The price was about seven dollars. I cannot believe that there aren't more reviews about their fruit tart. I also bought cookies, white chocolate, and macadamia, which were very good. Just follow the 10,000 Teslas getting off the 5 Freeway at the Harris Ranch exit, as this is the mid-way point between LA and the Bay Area, billed as one of the biggest Tesla charging stations in the world. But even lowly non-Tesla owners like me can enjoy California's most famous "truck stop." It's beautiful by the way. The Harris family sold their beef operation in 2019, so you will not see the 100,000 cattle grazing around like the old days. Instead, it's manicured grounds leading to those Tesla stations, and then on to the Harris complex of hotel rooms, three restaurants, and the jaw-dropping "country store," a combination of bakery, deli, butcher and tons of stuff, from jewelry to clothing to artwork. Yes, I got a pillow. You are limited only by your wallet, which must open widely. After lunch and using their famously clean restrooms (no purchase required), it's a great place to get your latte and baked goods to-go for the next three hours of your trip up north, or down south. They have full-sized cakes to bring to where-ever you're going next; the carrot cake alone is worth stopping for, along with cookies for the road. Also a huge wine selection. The shop reminds me of our California's "other" highway's most famous stop, San Luis Obispo's Madonna Inn off the 101. Both give you something to look forward to, until Elon invents flying cars. We always stop by here on the drive up and down NorCal to and from SoCal. The bathrooms are the facility are very clean and there's plenty of stalls even during busier times when lots of visitors are here. The country store area has lots of gift items as well as snacks and bakery items. We tend to grab at least a pastry or two to try and pad our stomachs between meal times. I've enjoyed the cinnamon rolls (on the sweet side), bear claw donuts, and more. They also have small cups of ice cream that are perfect for hotter days. read more

Change of ownership. After ~1.5 years from my last visit, the Country Store at Harris Ranch is just a remnant of what it used to be. As soon as you walk in, you instantly notice so much open floor space (meaning all the merchandise goodies are no longer available). Over the years, my family and I have made it a point to stop by on our journey to SoCal to stop off for restroom break, fuel up, stretch our legs and load up on some of the fresh delicious beef jerky from the large glass jar that was always the BEST! No longer is the jerky readily available. They have flavored 3 oz. bags (about 2-3 pieces) for $17.99 on the counter. Not only is this price gouging but the quality is also no longer there. I'm not sure why this was removed but I'm sure it has something to do with the new ownership running things a little differently. I'm guessing the other services Harris Ranch provides (hotel accommodations, restaurants and over priced gasoline) are all suffering what once was a great pit stop in the middle of HWY 5. I also heard the owner passed. So sad! read more

I will admit the items and eats in the Country Store is NOT cheap by any means. If there is any truth to the statement "You get what you pay for"... this is it!!! As pricey as their items may appear to be, you are definitely getting your dollar's worth Their bakery gondola sits next to their meat gondola and boy oh boy, I stood there for some time admiring the bakery delicacies and the scrumptious meats!!!! I stopped their recently and their holiday decorations were already up and dawned in great holiday fashion. Fun Fact- Harris Ranch is smack in the middle of Sacramento and Los Angeles off Interstate Highway 5. It used to be (and obviously still is) a midway stop for me to snack in their restaurant or buy some delicacies from their bakery to keep me company the rest of the way to Los Angeles. Fun Fact #2- If you destination is Los Angeles, and your car's gas tank reads 1/2 tank or less; you'd better feed your car at the stations outside of Harris Ranch.... Going into the bakery/country store there is nothing that is bad. All the items that you can buy are great wonderful souvenirs snacks drinks the chocolates the brighten items that you can buy are wonderful. The bakery is amazing. We always make a pit stop at Harris Ranch for their Country Store whenever heading down to Southern California. Catching up on reviews right now but we stopped by a few months back. Coalinga is a nice place to stop for a quick restroom or snack break. Their restrooms are clean and there's plenty of parking here. If you drive a Tesla, there's a whole line of super chargers too. We always pick up a few bakery items for the drive down. Their almond croissants are delicious and are the perfect snack. The rib eye steaks look great but I need to plan ahead with a cooler and ice packs though. Lots of souvenirs, gift items, and snacks at the store. We got some pastries and so meat of course. The people are really nice. When you get meat they pack it with a ice pack so your newly purchased meat wont go to waste. There are SO many chargers, the bathrooms are clean and beautiful, the store had yummy snacks, there were beautiful grassy areas for cute dogs, and I was sad that I wasn't hungry when I smelled the delicious BBQ. So when my friend Linda saw my social media that i was up north for the weekend. She texted me to visit Harris Ranch otw back home. It'll be a great rest stop for snacks, yummy treats & even good meat to purchase. Said the restrooms are also super clean. Well i wished i knew about this place before or even otw to San Francisco because we actually stopped at a gas station off the same exit but on the other side of Coalinga. So i knew for sure will attempt to come here otw back home. So glad I did. It's a really cute shop with omg all the best looking yummy pastries, cakes & treats indeed. I had to hold my temptation and not get everything. I'm a fan of white chocolate chip and macadamia nut cookies. So i got 2 of their pre package cookies. Omg they are so delicious! Now i wish i had grab 2 more. Ughhh It's a really cute gift shop. All things cows for sure per my friends information. They even have Tesla charging stations outside. A dozen i want to say. Highly recommend this as a pit stop/rest area. They serve yummy BBQ of their meat selection across the street where the gas station is at. If you're looking for a bite/lunch.
