Clean, bright, fresh, well stocked, everything you'd expect from a respectable grocery store. You do end up paying more on non-sale items, sometimes a lot more. I've learned to stick to things on sale or Harris Teeter brand items. Just sign up for their vic card and you'll get a email with sale items every week. Deli department is decent, depending on who's making your sandwich, you can end up with bare minimum amount of meat or close to double at other times. They have a reward program for free sub every 15 points (2pt whole 1pt half sub). Other prepared food were okay, rotisserie chicken, fried chicken, etc. read more

I live in Foxchase and Harris Teeter is the closest grocery around. I love that it's open 24 hours but I will only go there after everything else is closed. The reason: their prices. Completely inflated, and hardly anything I ever need is on sale. If money is not an issue for you go for it. I'll keep going to Safeway on Van Dorn. It's still a better deal even factoring in the time and gas. read more

Harris Teeter has hit it out of the park this time with their Thursday night Prime Rib Dinner for $9.99. Vegetables, rosemary potatoes & horseradish sauce included. There's also a lunch and dinner buffet at $8.99 a pound with all the comfort food favorites and you only pay for what you eat! Not some flat rate. I've been eating breakfast there for months at $7.99 a pound. A feast usually costs me about $2.50. Gorgeous thick, crispy bacon, link & patty sausage, scrambled eggs with and without cheese, fluffy griddle cakes, French toast, potatoes, biscuits with sausage gravy, pastries and more. I'm a big fan of Harris Teeter grocery stores in general. Although this isn't the best I've visited, it is in the top 5. Sometimes their produce department is lacking, but I can usually find what I need. All other departments are great. Their meat/seafood and organic selection are great. Their prices can be higher, but if you check the sales and use coupons, you aren't overspending. The parking lot can be hectic, but I don't have many problems parking towards the back of the lot. I'm seriously considering going elsewhere. I love being able to get everything in one stop. Usually the cashiers are nice and helpful. The thing is that since the Safeway opened on King Street, the staff has been grumpy. It seems to be that since they have competition that they would be nicer and more helpful, but the opposite has occurred. I've not tried the new store, but given my experience today, I'm figuring it may be worth my while to begin looking at Safeway or Shoppers and put up with dealing with self-checkout for lower prices. read more

Best sub and deli department. Friday's are whole subs for $4.99 (with VIC card) and after 15 you get a free sub! Meat is always fresh and the TUNA and meatball sub is WONDERFUL. This store continues to be mismanaged. Unfortunately, the Giant in my neighborhood closed and I'm back doing a little more at this Harris Teeter. Last night there was no milk in the cooler. I had to walk around the store and finally found someone who went in the back and got some milk for me. Today, there were no baked goods available. In fact, no one was working in the bakery section. I stopped in to buy some rolls for dinner at 3:00 pm and there were no rolls available. Just wish another chain would take over this store. read more

Great Customer Service... ...my girlfriend needed a tampon from the machine in the bathroom, but it was empty. Luckily, an employee came in, saw that it was empty, left, came back with 2 free tampons for my girl. Employee: "They said one, but I say some." Again, great customer service :D read more

HT is a great grocery store to have in the neighborhood. You can't beat their seafood/meat counter, fresh produce, beer/wine section and bakery. I have always had good experiences with the folks who work there, especially the seafood manager and the cashiers. HT stocks some smaller local brands that I like (and I hope this doesn't change bc of the Kroger takeover!). VIC cards get you great deals, especially the buy one get one free specials. Sometimes checkout is slow and the self checkout lines are long. I wish they had more self check out stations. read more

Clean, and convenience because of the 24/7 hours. Becareful at the check out for inflated price. I bought tomatoes that $.99/lbs. At the check out, the cashier rang it up at $1.49/lbs. That's 150% mark up. I'm not quite sure if this is a mistake or something that is a common practice at this location or at Harris Teeter. I'll be paying more attention in the future for sure. They never have enough cashier, always trying to force shopper into the self check out line! read more

Harris Teeter is emphasizing on high quality food and excellent customer service, specially on Duke Street. I heard they use this location as a training site for managers. This evening 11/29/15 6:49 PM was a little disappointment, because the self-service cashier was not even smiling and when I picked up my changed for cash back, she didn't even say anything and she crossed her hands after she handed it to me. read more

First off, big Harris Teeter fan. The comparable area stores are Safeway, Giant... and about 2 others. Whole Foods, Trader Joes... they aren't comparable as they don't sell anywhere near the same sort of things. Actually, Whole Foods sells Driscoll strawberries. For literally twice as much. Anyway, it's a big grocery shop with standard selection. My big thing for a chain is Boar's Head and they have it. It's a clean store, busy on Sundays. The only thing that drives me up a wall is the deterrent outside. I've been told it keeps pests away. I'm wondering how necessary it is. OH, and despite what people say about the pricing, if you are a VIC member, you can literally get half your bill discounted. Done that a few times. read more

For a grocery store, or for that matter, any store, I have never experienced a friendlier staff. Everyone is so nice and helpful. They all go out of their way to be extra nice. Can't find something, an exployee will take you right to it. Don't know what something tastes like, they give you a sample. Can't decide between several items, they will recommend the best one for you. I go there with my Grandson. The bread lady sees him coming and cuts a big hunk of cake for him. I wonder what is the official Harris Teeter protocol that is supposed be used when a prescription is picked up? Today the pharmacist said my name and what my prescription was in a very loud voice. I felt completely humiliated and that my medical privacy has been violated. When I turned to leave there were three people waiting behind me at the pick-up window who obviously heard everything. Can't the pharmacist or assistant just confirm by showing the prescription to the customer, rather that saying it out loud in front of other people? Descent sushi if u want something quick and reasonably priced. Also decent selection of wine and beer if u just want to grab something while grocery shopping. I buy my groceries from here and I don't find it anymore expensive than Safeway (I try to get ht brands when I can and also sale items). Much cleaner than some of the other grocery stores and I haven't waited in line behind more than 1 or 2 people. Love the location on Duke St. Someone always exceeds my expectations. I haven't encountered a grumpy or unhelpful person yet - in fact they all go out of their way to help. Today was no different and encouraged me to write this review. I stopped on my way into work to pick up a few things and figured I would get a sub sandwich made for me for lunch time. It was about 8am so they weren't quite ready, but Debbie made it possible. The bread wasn't done yet, so she grabbed bread from the sales floor and even took the time to open up fresh ingredients - WITHOUT ME EVEN ASKING- now that's something. I work in the service industry and understand what service is about and this was it. But what's best is that the staff is always willing and eager to help so this great experience has become the norm and not just an exception. read more

Today is Senior Citizen's Day, and I know this because, though I am a third if my lifetime from becoming a senior, the associates here keep bringing it up with me, in a way that makes me want to avoid shopping here on Thursdays. In the past, I was assumed to be a senior, and that did not feel good. Today, I was asked if I realized it was Senior Discount Day, and did I know if I could get my Mother or Grandmother to shop for me, I could get a discount! No matter how inconvenient it might be for me to unearth either one, what about my father, or grandfather? Why don't I ask a random stranger to do my shopping today, so's I can save the 40 cents on my purchase of my lunch? I would like Harris Teeter to figure out a respectable way to promote their senior discount, which does not make customers feel they look 17 years older. How about this? Just put a sign up, and let seniors ask for it, because I don't know one senior who doesn't make sure they get a discount the minute they are eligible! In the meantime, I will go hog-wild and continue to pay the premium eight bucks for my food. read more

I regularly come to this store and generally enjoy my experience with the staff as well as the selection of produce and meats. This time how ever i did not appreciate being questioned by the women working self check out and having to go get produce item numbers as she didn't believe that I had the right produce that I was checking out with. There didn't happen have the proper item in the system, so I selected the closest item that the computer had, at that point she yelled those aren't "Yukon potatoes", they were "baby yukons" or "marble Yukon" or "pewee Yukon" all the same potato. I explained this to her as she insisted that they were fingerling potatoes (a completely different type of potato). But I felt like I was being accosted like I was trying to steal potatoes. Give me a break. I will spend my money else where next time. read more

I used to do all of my shopping here. That would be at least 4 to 5 times a week. Now, I very rarely go into the store unless I absolutely have to. The store has really changed for the worst in the last year. You have to really watch as your groceries are being rung up. Every time, and it never failed, the registers did not pick up the correct pricing of items. Items that were marked on the shelves or in emails, flyers, etc. as being on sale were not priced right at check out. The sale prices were not given. I got real tired of having to keep a very watchful eye over the pricing mistakes. Of course, there were many times when I would get home and realize that again, the sale prices were not given. Rather than take groceries back to get the correct price, I didn't. It is not worth my time and effort to take the food back to get the correct price. This location needs to have staff and management that is attentive and that cares enough to make sure that pricing is right. read more

This my favorite location. This location seems to have a better selection of wild seafood and cold-pressed juices.

I am not a fan of the seafood department at this store. A week ago I purchased tilapia fillets. I noticed a slight smell to them but figured it was normal. When I bit into one fillet the texture was gritty and it tasted awful. Normally when I sautéed tilapia it is soft and has a light taste. I also noticed the fillet I bit into had a large piece of bone that was embedded in one section of the meat. I have never had tilapia fillets with any bones and looking at where this bone was situated it wasn't a part of this fish. I decided to give Harris Teeter another chance because I figured the tilapia was just a fluke. A couple of days later I purchased shrimp. When I took the shrimp out of the bag it smelled like chlorine/ammonia mixed with garbage. I also noticed some of the pieces had dark slimy sections on them and the shells were soft and the shrimp looked mangled. I threw it out and just figured I'll start looking for a new place to buy meat and seafood. What a disappointment. Some of the employees are really nice here but the quality of some of the produce, meat and seafood is really lacking. Please do better Harris Teeter. read more

It is always interesting to watch a company in an ever changing market place to see how they handle the change. Grocery stores are being transformed by cut rate grocery stores and the internet. I am not the primary grocery shopper in my household but do often go to be of assistance. Three times I have accompanied my wife shopping at this store on Duke Street in Alexandria. In every case I have arrived at the check out to find no baggers to be seen or found. On one occasion I requested to see a Manager and I waited until they had located a bagger. The other two times my wife said she was not interested in the wait. On the way home I recommended that not only could I order groceries on line but they would be delivered to our front door quickly. I firmly believe that Harris Teeter needs to address this problem. If I am going to go through the effort of shopping in their store I would fully expect that I would get the service I deserve and not have to pack my own bags. read more

In general I like this Harris Teeter. It has a great selection, is clean, and when the lines get long they open other registers. The main negative is the deli. There is always a line and there never seems to be enough people helping. The sandwich making takes forever and recently an employee was making prepackaged sandwiches while I waited for five plus minutes for her to finish. While more of us waited another employee came to help and she told him to help another gentlemen who came after me. They really need to get better organized. read more
