This particular HT seems to be having some problems. The produce quality is highly uneven - a couple of times in the last few months I've taken home berries that were cleverly hiding mold a layer or two down, packaged salads that turned into a wilted mess in a just a day, and other indicators that someone's not paying attention. Checkout has gotten sloppier, too; several times in the last couple of months I've noticed and had to correct pretty significant discrepancies - missing specials, ringing in ordinary produce as (much pricier) organic, multiple entries for a single item, that kind of thing. The final kicker, though, last week, was taking home what turned out to be two pounds of (expensive) rancid crab legs. The manager on duty was polite when we returned and processed a refund immediately, but I didn't get any sense that she was surprised nor that anything special was done to review the rest of the stock. It's a shame, as this is otherwise the best supermarket in the area - but with the Van Dorn Safeway renovated and the nearby Giant also having recently upgraded its produce, it's getting harder and harder to justify HT prices. read more

This location is the one closest to my home. It is clean and organized, for the most part. The staff is kinda and helpful. The one thing I will say, the lines, whether it's self check out, express lane, or a regular checkout with a cashier, you can be in line sometimes 5-10 minuets. Also, their food bar is only as fresh as when they first put it out... come back in 2-3 hours and you've got the same food on display, but glazed over, crusted and hard. read more

I'm a local in this area & shop a lot at this location. What annoys me is the employee name Jeff who mostly at the counter where they sell cigarettes. Every time I go there and try to buy cigarettes he makes me wait at least 5 minutes even I was the only one there waiting. So today I asked him how long I have to wait to get a pack of cigarettes, he said until he's done, the same answer he said to me all the time !!! Yikes! I popped into this place twice for food from the "HOT" food bar....it's always lukewarm to cold... For $7.99 a lb. and in a plastic countainer, the food should be hot for the price. My scoops of food, barely covered the bottom of each section, and 1.20lb, this carry-out came to $9.59! Where is the table to sit at, if so high??? I never go into HT, unless desperate. Love how the east coast knows how to do grocery grocery stores. Loving the cheese, olive, hot food and trail mix bar. Bakery is pretty darn amazing too not Publix good but close. Decent selections of items as well. So you will pretty much find what your looking for. The only down side of it would be the check out process. Cramped and little sluggish. This is my local supermarket. They have a great deli, a wonderful bakery that makes fresh bread and tasty cakes. They have a variety of foods from every country. Even a pizza and sushi bar! I'm always confused why they don't have small carts for those of us who are single and the lanes at the veggies are so tiny. My sister loves Harris Teeter so I thought I'd order a chef prepared $79 meal. My order was correct on my ticket. I got wrong stuffing should've been cornbread not walnut cranberry. The sliced walnut cranberry bread not in my box, nor was the 3lb peach cobbler. I hosted 20 folks in Shenandoah Valley. Closest Harris Teeter was Charlottesville 45 minutes away. I called Duke St store mgr who advised me she'll reimburse me for a new side which she did today. This Harris Teeter location falls way below the Harris Teeter brand that I've come to know and appreciate. After several negative experiences at this store I won't be returning. Everything from apathetic to downright rude employees to the lack of service and quality makes this place a real bust. Getting in and out of the store isn't easy in addition to the fact that the shelves never seem to be well stocked. read more

The only reason I'm giving this a 2 star, is because of the new Harris Teeter website. The folks at the Duke street store are great. I pulled my subscription after being unsatisfied and confused trying to maneuver into their new website. Now supposedly it is up and running. The issue, is that you have to view everything instead of just the specials. You cannot see what's on sale unless you go look to the circular, and then jump back to the category of where you want to shop. You then see this tiny print in the top right corner of the sale price. I mean tiny print! This is extremely time consuming. It's just not worth it. It's really sad, because they are only rating this store at a 3.5 star. This used to be a 5 star grocery store. Alas, the higher powers at the headquarters, have decided this is the better way to go on their new website. I'm not going to spend money because I can't find the items that are on sale. read more

This HT location is no where near home/work, but happened to be in the area and needed to pick up a few items for a dinner party. This location was awesome! It looks even better than my normal HT in Fairfax, which I LOVE! It was clean, well lit, organized and fully stocked. The employees at the deli/fresh foods market were pleasant, and quick to help me. Even after I changed my order, the lady did as I requested with no hesitation and a smile. There were a lot of people shopping here, but check-out was painless! Before I start I would like to name two young ladies one named Kyrsten and the other named Mary. Taking the time today to finally write the review that I said I was going to write. This was back in November 11th. It was me and my fiancé's 2 year anniversary. I had been busy with work all week that I didn't really have time to plan anything other than get a bouquet of flowers. So I thought I'd go into the Harris teeter since it's right across the street from my house, little did I know I'd have the best experience ever. Mary was working the self checkout station when she noticed that I looked like I needed help and she went out of her way COMPLETELY to take me all around the store by giving me ideas and helping me find last minutes gift ideas. She even made me and very pretty basket with all the stuff inside that she helped me pick out. She was absolutely amazing. She was very attentive and responsive, gave great customer service. Some of the best customer service I've ever had. Then along the way I also met kyrsten who was also very nice. She helped me put together another lovely bouquet of roses and she was very sweet. She was very respectful and was very willing. I really liked that because it's not everyday that you see someone as young as her take her job seriously! Well the good things are it has the speed checkout, sales with a teeter card, next to famous stores like DD and GNC, and it's 24/7 so I can visit at 4:00 am. The bad things are if it's 5:00 pm and it's a madhouse, customer service is selective, and as I'm an Uber Driver I have to wait 30 minutes at the call box on a summons. I really like this store. The groceries are the highest quality in the area and the employees are friendly. The one thing I would warn people about is that they should not shop their past 10pm unless they're ok with panhandlers coming up to them in the parking lot next to their car and asking them for money. It seems like every single time I'm there late at night I get hit up for money in the parking lot. Harris Teeter isn't alone in this though because I've had panhandlers come up to me in the parking lot at the Giant down the street in the middle of the day, but not as regularly as Harris Teeter at night where it is an almost certain occurrence. read more

I've decided to break up with this Harris Teeter. It was my default store and I had mistakenly believed that grocery stores were expensive in general until I stopped in at another store and was shocked at how many staples I could get for twenty bucks. The pharmacy app is terrible- I took the time to input all my prescriptions yet I can't find a list of them anywhere so ordering a refill is like a new process every time. They also never call when it's ready so I have to go in after a few days and hope for the best. The worst thing is the parking lot. The storefront blasts annoying sounds into the parking lot, probably as a loitering deterrent. It's pretty annoying to the paying customers trying to enter or exit, but it must be effective in that I see no loiterers. The turn lane signal to get in is timed too short and the curb cut is steep and dangerous to car underbellies, so only a few cars can get through in a light. The parking lot itself is poorly laid out for vehicular/cart/pedestrian harmony. The one crosswalk leading to half the parking lot is outside of the range of the new automatically locking anti-theft carts, which stop suddenly when the official but invisible HT property line has been reached. I got a bloody shin finding this out. At that point my options were to backtrack to the front entrance and push my cart down the drive aisle hoping I don't get hit by a distracted driver, drop the cart down a 6" curb and hope it doesn't capsize, or load up my arms with all my purchases for one trip. Which I normally do, I don't mind the mini workout, except when it's too much stuff for two hands to carry. I nearly dumped a sixpack of beer onto the asphalt trying to get my car doors unlocked. The combined overpriced goods and poor experience is like adding insult to injury. I'll spend my precious cash somewhere else from now on. read more

This Harris Teeter is good but always busy. Like middle of the night, parking lot still jam packed full, busy. Overall, this location is usually well stocked, with friendly staff and a good selection. The produce section is very small and is hard to navigate through with a cart and 15 other shoppers at any given time. The meat department is always well stocked and the staff are very helpful! The pharmacy is fast and the staff there are always kind! Overall, a good grocery store. read more

Compared to other supermarkets, the prices here are a good 25% higher across the board. It's nice being in a store that has actual employees staffing the registers instead of a store that's all self-checkout with no cashiers, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay a 25% premium for that. Less than optimal customer service here today. I asked the person working at the bread counter to slice some fresh bread for me and her response was, "it's too hot". Ummm...ok...so any suggestions?? No she just looked at me and went to talk to another customer. Not helpful. Also, when I was checking out, the person working at the check out counter pointed out that my bag of peanuts had a hole in it. Instead of sending someone to get another bag she said, "So did you want a new one or what?" Are you kidding me???. I then asked her if she could get someone to get me a replacement bag. Seriously-I live across the street and am almost forced to come here, but I'd seriously rather not. The parking lot is a total nightmare and there are cars whipping in and out everywhere. Walked out this past Sunday afternoon. The store was crowded, so we understood we had to wait in line, but the girl at the check out was going so slow it was ridiculous. And it wasn't because she was new or unsure. She was just being belligerent. The self check out was all backed up as well. The manager was walking around but seemed unaware of half of what was going on. Maybe get some baggers or help these check out girls with the bad attitudes scan stuff to speed it up. Seriously, two people in front of us walked off the line and we still were standing there for fifteen minutes while this girl moved as slow as humanly possible while the woman she was helping looked like she was going to lose it. Finally, we put our stuff to the side and walked out. I will never step foot in this store again. Tis place needs to hire some people who have better attitudes. I got yelled at at the hot bar. Well, not really yelled at but I got a talking to since I decided to get lunch from two different cuisines (from the same "bar" - just one side is Asian food and the other is more American comfort food) but no where is it marked as not being allowed, plus the price is the same. Anyway, after that experience, I make sure to be "wasteful" and get a whole new container if I get just one measly steamed dumpling from the other side. Other than the fact that it's a bit pricy, the premade food is decent, including the pizzas (albeit greasy) and the sushi (for grocery store sushi, that is). This is my favorite grocery store. It's clean, well stocked, has good variety, has nice employees, and offers great specials. The produce department is kept well stocked and it's rare to find any shabby-looking items. Harris Teeter in the Foxchase shopping center has one of the best selections of food, drinks, and accessories in all of Alexandria. Although getting in to the store is absolutely awful adventure. The parking lot is constantly full to capacity, very little parking available in the front, the back, or either side. The shopping center must have become more popular than the original architects had planned. The second knock on the place, the price. It is a high end store, I get it, I don't expect "Shoppers" prices, but the inflated prices make it hard to want to be here on a regular basis. read more

This review is mainly based on their pharmacy. The Saturday staff was very unwelcoming to someone who is brand new to the area or anyone for that matter. I had just moved from another state, had unexpected surgery the 8 days ago and needed my prescription refilled/transferred from the hospital I was at. After a very stressful move just a week after my surgery, I was feeling ill and in pain when I went to pick up my transferred prescription. There was no sense of kindness from the pharmacy tech who seemed annoyed by having to fill the prescription, or from the pharmacist. One of my prescriptions can be obtained from over the counter, but is much cheaper through my prescription. The pharmacist kept insisting I get it over the counter. I understand... just like when a doctor gives you Motrin by prescription but you can get it over the counter. Either way, I wanted it the way it was prescribed by my surgeon. They then told me they didn't even have it. Its a very basic prescription, nothing fancy but I didn't want to pay $7 more for the over the counter stuff. Needless to say I won't transfer the rest of my prescriptions from my old home to this store, will be keeping everything at Target where at least I get good rewards for prescriptions and always have experienced kind staff at all the Target pharmacies I've used. The staff overwise in the store were kind and helpful. The wine selection is very poor, very little in French or Italian wines, although its set up beautifully as if there is a reasonable international selection. That's just a personal taste note of course. As my fiancé was checking out the the cashier was very nice and asked how everything was, he mentioned the wine and cheese selection looks nice but is limited. She said they are encouraged to ask how everything was of guests and then report comments back to their managers. She then stated that despite this, their managers do nothing about comments, regardless of what they may be. What a shame, especially for individuals like herself working hard to make guest experiences better. Although Wegman's is a bit farther away, I'm looking forward to doing my shopping there and at Trader Joes for better options. Overall, a nice store but just lacked the neighborhood warmth I definitely needed after a stressful move. read more
