Never again. The prime rib they feature on Thursday gave me food poisoning. They always have horrible customer service.

I've been to 4 or 5 Harris Teeters in Alexandria and this is by far the best one. It's gigantic and has things none of the others have, such as a trail mix bar! I love that so much because craisins are gross, but they seem to always be in pre-mixed trail mix. The olive bar is also extensive, much more so than at the other locations I've been to, including those long-stemmed artichokes. I love those! And not even all Whole Foods have them on their salad bars. Now, as for the actual salad bar at this Teeter, it's nothing to write home about. There's absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. When I was there on a Friday at 3pm, there were so many samples that I no longer regretted skipping lunch. From going to the location in Old Town, I know Teeter sometimes has unusual ways of organizing the store, but I was simply unable to locate dry polenta. I had to ask several people for assistance and I gotta say, every one of them was so nice about it, even if they didn't know and had to pass me along to someone else. My cashier, Daniel, was also super nice. Part of what makes this location so much bigger than the others is they have a rather large pharmacy section, with more than just one tiny aisle of the bare necessities. read more

This review is an update of my previous review for their Order Ahead service. Just after I thought the order ahead was getting better, which was around a 50% success rate, it got worse. Ordered a sub for pick up. Received notice that it was ready for pick up. Get to the store and not only wasn't it ready, there were no rolls available to make subs with. A wasted trip. I gave the one star for the really nice self check out attendant who had some compassion and sincerely tried to help me out. I came here to pick up WesternUnion and grab some groceries. Got to the store and customer service tells me the machines are down. I proceed to get groceries and do the Western Union another day. Well, I get to check out and discover I left my wallet at home. I go back to customer service to ask if they could try their system now because I'm kinda stranded now with no wallet. Lady turns to her manager sitting on her ass at 8pm as if their close and whispers to her. She then informs me the registers at her area are down. I asked, could you please do it another register because I'm in a bind. She then whispers again and comes back with, we can't give you money after a certain time. Wait, what?! Which story is it? The down system, the register or the no money after a certain time. What a lazy lying crew they have on this location. Ridiculous and heartless. Trash.... read more

I was on a hunt for Chipotle Seasoning and this was the only location that had it and it was also the last one!!!!! I can always find what I'm looking for here to include: aloe leaf, jicama, buy 2 get 3 free Harris Teeter brand shredded kinds of cheese, and the yummy Rotisserie chicken! Parking for us Veterans is great but I am sure some park there that are not. The gentleman who collects the carts is very nice and always is pleasant. read more

Generally a nice store if you go after 9 PM. It is too crowded before then. Employees are alright and friendly enough although they will never offer help. Water selection low. Generally terrific meats. Nice hot bar. Nive bath and body section, freezer goods section and housewares. Odd looking milk but OK. Not enough organic produce. In the organic section currently they have some sort of hornet or honey bee trap sitting right in flthe middle of all the produce, leaning on potatoes. Idk but personally I buy organic bc I dont want pesticides near my food. Its gross. And there are a million flies flying over the organic section. This organic section unfortunately brings the rating to 2 stars. Zero organic fruits for sale. read more

I live within walking distance of Harris Teeter, so it's easily become my grocery store of choice out of convenience. But I don't love it. The produce is probably some of the better you can get from a non-specialty, conventional grocery store, but it's still pretty hit or miss (especially their organic lettuce, which is almost always dreadful). Sometimes you might have to wait a decade at the deli, depending upon how motivated the employees are when you're there. The selection and stock are good, however - I can't think of any time when I went in and couldn't find what I wanted (except for Squirt, which apparently doesn't exist on the East coast? #justiceforsquirt). The prices, for the area, are fairly standard, but I highly recommend signing up for the VIC rewards program so you don't pay through the nose for certain items. I really hate the checkout line situation. Rather than have long belts on which you can place your items, the employees empty your cart as they're ringing them up. I'm not sure if this is to save space, but since it's a fairly large store and people can have pretty full carts, this is the bane of my existence. It can also make for pretty long lines that clog up the front of the store, between the end caps and the registers. For the most part, this is a pretty good store, but it's not my favorite, and I find myself driving pretty far out to buy specific items (especially produce) elsewhere. read more

I used to love going to HT. The staff always courteous and profesional. Last time I went there were two ladies at customer service(Libby and Patricia). Last Tuesday, I grabbed a pack of toilet paper that I found in 3 different areas on the shelf. I check with a staff member -Tyre- and he told me that I just have to take it to customer service and they will honor the lowest price marked. I went and those two ladies were extremely rude and very unprofessional. They didn't even let me finish explain the whole situation. Not my fault they put the wrong price, they should honor the price marked on the product --false advertisement-- Their mistake and they get an attitude. it was a very unpleasant visit to HT thank to those two ladies. This store is very nice, accurate, and clean. I go to this store at least 2-3 times per week, I consider it pretty often. The location is very good and very convenient, I do not really interact with staff too much so, I won't be saying whether they are friendly or not. They have really delicious hot food that you can have, you can also have something really cheaper. read more

You know when the Yankees or the Cowboys take the field, and people start chanting, "Over-rated! Clap! Clap! ClapClapClap!"? That's this Harris Teeter. While the majority of inventory is awesome, the prices are so not. The only deals here are the VIC specials, otherwise HT is charging half-again as much as other stores. So, 2.5 stars -- I've experienced way better pricing fo sho. Good stuff: it's open all the freaking time. The olive bar. Alcohol selection. Some seldom-seen produce like tamarind, starfruit, plantains, etc. Vast array of cheese. Clean, bright, spacious. Bad stuff: overpriced. Long lines. Overpriced. Parking. Overpriced. Crowds. Overpriced. Produce section has a seemingly large selection, but then you get up close and see there's only 10 of everything. Oh, and it's overpriced. Husband and I used to shop here on the regular before we got wise to saving our clams. Now we rarely ever shop here unless it's for something last-minute or desperately needed, because this store is so close to home we can walk. But for major shops, I get in the car, drive out to T Joe's and spend half the money. read more

I'm new to the area and also an economist/mathematician, so if I had to evaluate my 3 or 4 visits to Harris Teeter on a mathematical basis against Giant and Shoppers, it would be: Whole Foods greater than Harris Teeter greater than Giant greater than Shoppers, where Whole Foods=Makes me feel poor and undereducated about soy-glutien-organic-allergen-free grapes, Giant=makes me feed very blahh Shoppers=makes me feel like I'm shopping on a budget....across the border in Tijuanaa and Harris Teeter=Makes me feel like a yuppie without necessarily spending like one. I like their design and layout, but the fruits here tend to be on the expensive side. I would go here for a quick pick-me-up. read more

Holy rotten tomatoes Batman. I really need to revisit and update some of my early reviews. No way does my 4-star praise still stand and it hasn't for some time. When more than 50% of what you purchase comes from the produce department, too many visits where the bins were beyond picked over finally sent me elsewhere for my regular weekly shopping. I used to think it was a supply issue - then visits to HTs at Shirlington, Pentagon City and recently Potomac Yard showed me issues with produce quality here have more to do with DEMAND than supply. When people willingly pay to much for crap - crap will be happily served up and there's no reason for the store to improve, leaving the quality fruits and veggies to the other locations. My issues go beyond the produce though. I've gotten ill from the hot bar (and I'm glad I stopped getting food off it as I often see customers grazing off it), found chunks of plastic bag in my clam chowder, and empty spots on shelves are frequently stocked with whatever item is at hand - meaning the thing you want doesn't get reordered for weeks sometimes. Combined with the fact that items are in general just over priced - I'd given up and started going to Giant (4 times further from my home) years ago. Now that Giant gives me any where from 10-50 cents a gallon off my gas each week - in addition to the nice produce, cheaper prices, and better reliability of getting items - there's little reason to look back. There are a few real quality employees - like the lady making my meatball sub who decided it really didn't look good enough so she just re-did it or the cashier I encountered on my last visit who actually knew how to properly bag items so a can of soup didn't land on my bananas and hot rotisserie chicken didn't turn my ice cream to a puddle. I still stick my head in here every few weeks. Its around the corner from home so convenient for when I just need to run out for a basic item. But I'm long past being a regular customer and my 4-star opinion just a distant memory at this point. read more

Love this Harris Teeter! The staff here is one you think you would find at a 5 star restaurant! They are always SO polite, i don't think I've came and and not been asked if I'm doing ok, or if i need help. The store itself is tidy and pretty easy to navigate. This is the grocery store closest to the Pure Weight Loss Center I visit in my never-ending quest to lose weight. It's a truly golden arrangement. I drive from the district every Saturday to get weighed and discuss my diet choices. Then I hop over to the Harris Teeter and chow down on the free samples at the Bakery counter. Like Kori says, this grocery has it all. It can be a bit pricey for some things, but you can usually find a decent priced version of whatever it is you want. You can pay the premium price for organic veggies, or save $$ and get the conventional. They have a nice selection of fresh mushrooms -- white mushrooms, crimini, portobellos, shitake, oyster, enoki, and even puffball mushrooms. The impressive selection extends to the rest of the store as well. Take olives, for instance -- you can buy the cheap-o can of flavorless black olives for a pittance, or you can shell out about 5 bucks for the gourmet kalamata olives. Or heck, forget that and go to the olive bar -- that's right, they have an entire bar of different kinds of olives that you can buy in bulk. Lots of wine and beer, and it's a pretty good selection! They even have a bottle chiller. One other remarkable thing about the HT is that you can buy almost anything here. They have a huge cosmetics and toiletries section. They have art supplies. I think you can even get lawn chairs. In conclusion, thank goodness it's a large store, so that I have the opportunity to walk off those bread samples. Granted the fact that I can walk here is a HUGE plus.... it's also an AWESOME grocery store. It has a neighborhood grocery store feel, but the prices are similar to Giant and Safeway (but i find Harris Teeter even cheaper sometimes). My secret to great deals is not being too rigid on my shopping list. I could say "i need Quaker Oatmeal for Breakfast!" or I say "i need something for breakfast" if i use the latter then one week some cereal will be by one get one free and the next week all oatmeal will be on sale. Bargain shopping can be done. They even had a sushi rolling mat when I wanted to make my own sushi! (and if that didn't work they have sushi rollers right in front of you). Lots of free samples...., including beer and wine, how can that be bad.?!?! Open 24/7?!?!?! Thank you! I love this store even if the name is weird and confuses people. read more

Look, this may not be the cheapest supermarket in the area, but when it comes to the meat I buy, I'm not looking for cheap. When I want good fish/steak/chicken at the last minute to broil at home, fresh organic vegetables, or if I want to shop at 2 am...Harris Teeter is there for me. They even call me when my prescriptions are ready every month. I love this place. read more

I come here to get about 90% of my groceries several times a week. The fresh fruit and veg selection is excellent and theres usually always something you want on sale. The fresh fish selection is good especially the mahi mani and wild salmon. The cod we bought wasn't very fresh at all. The staff in the back restocking are really very helpful and always offer help before you even get a chance to ask. The only downside is late night shopping. It's cruel and unusual punishment to use the self checkout for an entire cart of items when none of the cashiers are open. There's a lot of hot food, sushi and a salad bar. Rotisserie chicken which is good for about $5 on a Sunday. We've also tried the pizza which you can get by the slice or an entire pizza on Monday special for $7.99. Once we got a really burned cheese pizza which was barely edible. Took the receipt back with a photo and got full refund-- no problem. read more

I shop here at least four times a week. Although it's generally pricier than Safeway or Giant, Harris Teeter does have a lot of specials with great prices (you do have to have a "VIP" loyalty card, which is free, of course). The quality of seafood isn't as good as Balducci's, and produce is better at Whole Foods, but of course those are more expensive options. Regarding the complaint by the prior reviewer concerning the self-service checkout stations, perhaps things have changed in the past couple of months? I typically use these a couple of times per week, and with the exception of the first item - where the machine says, too quickly, to put the item in the bag - they *do not* nag about bagging items. And the machines are quite responsive - you can check out using these just about as quickly as if a cashier were checking you out, I think. read more

I love this specific Harris teeter! It is always clean, always has a good little section of "clearance" items and staff is friendly and helpful. Only negative I would say is I never purchase meat here, I feel like their selection is picked out and on multiple occurances I notice expired (past date) chicken and beef on shelves, visibly browning. There are a number grocery stores near me, including a Giant, 2 Safeways, and some store I can never remember the name of, but about a year ago the lights of heaven shined down in the form of Harris Teeter. This is my grocery store shopping venue of choice. No matter what I'm looking for, a quick pasta bowl, pizza, sushi or a deli sandwich, you can get it fresh here. Samples galore, a nice double-wide aisle of beer and wine selection, a descent vegetarian section, and, in all honesty, this place is just huge. And even though it is so big, it's always clean, and there's so many cashiers and self-check counters, you rarely wait in line behind more than one person, I even got out here in less than 10 minutes on Easter morning. And who doesn't need at least one 24-hour grocery store near them? Even if, sadly, they stop selling alcohol at midnight. read more

Big bonus on this place: Open 24 hours! Big negative: Crazy parking lot. I can't really blame the parking situation on the Harris Teeter, but it is one of the reasons this isn't my main grocery store. The parking layout is varied, and the people don't seem to pay attention. The store itself is well laid out, their beer and wine section isn't too bad, and they have some interesting dessert selections. Their health care section is HUGE. My favorite at this store is the take and bake/food counter stuff. The made-to-order sandwiches are a good price and quite tasty, and the take and bake pizzas are really good. Not by choice, I'm a late night shopper.... so Harry Teet's is an obvious choice for night owl pickups. The store itself is nice. It's got a great layout and good selection. The prices are a little higher than average, especially for produce. My main gripe is that HT does not have any cashiers working during the late-night hours. Instead, they have four self check-out stations. They take twice as long as regular lanes because there is a long pause in between items. The computer screen will keep telling you to put the item you just scanned in the bag, although you already have. The employee monitoring the self check-out lanes will have to bypass the error from their screen. It happens so often that it would just be quicker (and better for your sanity) to just have a standard check-out lane open. Seems like no big deal, until you bring up 30 items after you've put in a full day at the office and you just want to go home. Overall, HT is a good place to get your shopping done. You'll drop a little more money than you would at Giant/Safeway, but it is nicer and has a better selection. Late night shopping can be a pain. All that said, I'd still recommend HT. Expensive, Expensive, Expensive. Don't let those BOGO deals trick you into forking over more of your hard earned pennies. The store is clean and staff is helpful. I've often run into problems with cashiers being clueless about their Meal of the Week specials (I love those specials!) and their computers sometimes don't calculate their e-coupons correctly. The Harris Teeter on Duke Street is where I make my big groceries runs when I need to get ALL THE FOOD, and especially when I'm looking to buy fresh produce or a lot of meat. It has a better selection and higher quality of those goods than my local Safeway, and is worth the longer drive to get there. The bakery, produce, and meat/cheese/deli area is great, and I've never been disappointed by anything there. My girlfriend has picked up their sushi before, and hasn't had a bad thing to say about it. I've tried the meatball sub from their sandwich station, and it was both MASSIVE and tasty. High marks. The supermarket itself is nicely upscale, big bright and open. The staff have always been pleasant and helpful when I've had questions, and the cashiers/baggers do a great job in making sure none of your purchases get smashed. As others have mentioned, the parking lot can be a giant mess, but at this point I assume that any strip mall/shopping center parking lot in the DC area is a mess, so I can't really hold it against them. Also as others have mentioned, the prices here do seem to be higher than other supermarkets in the area. If you're not careful about buying things on sale, or are prone to impulse buy raids, your bill can add up in a hurry. Having said that, I don't mind paying a little more for the superior quality, selection, and service that I typically have here. read more

This Harris Teeter is amazing. Start with employees that make eye contact, say hello and are genuinely helpful if you have questions! Move on to the food. Excellent quality beefs, and an amazing selection of seafood. Add in a made to order sushi bar, tons of wine and beers for sale, and an asian buffet at lunchtime. The deli is also very good and the produce is the freshest I've found outside of Costco. The matter is you have to have the right expectations. You do pay more for the excellent selection and service. But there are ways to ease the pain and shop here on a budget. Start with only buying from the circular. There are always many choices from all areas of the store on sale each week. Second, if you need toothpaste go to Target or Shoppers. Things like that are almost always cheaper elsewhere. But for great food, and not feeling dread about having to brave a grocery store this is the place! read more

This is where I bought most of my groceries when living in Alexandria since it was closest to my apartment. Some things are pricier than other stores in the area, but some of the items that would go on sale for the e-vic specials were at a good price...cheaper than I can even get way out in North Dakota. I definitely miss that aspect of Harris Teeter since moving. When I would shop there, I would rarely buy anything that wasn't on sale because as others have said, it is pricier than the other stores around. The produce wasn't anything spectacular, the meat was decent, and I could usually get all buy a few things there at a reasonable price. They also recently got smaller carts, which makes it a lot easier to get around the store. I would also go in the middle of the day to avoid crowds, and the lines wouldn't be that long then. The parking lot, like others have mentioned, is horrible. It's always packed because it's in a strip mall. The store itself wasn't too bad - the cashiers were always quite friendly when I went in. I did find that they would be stocking a lot during the day, and many abandoned carts from that process would be cluttered throughout the store, usually making it harder to walk around. I remember one instance where a lady was stocking in the middle of an aisle, and as I approached her, she made no attempt at letting me by. Otherwise, most of the employees I came into contact with were friendly enough to make me want to come back. read more

Harris teeter in Mclane is the worst one is in Virginia. Is does not have the best best fresh cakes and pies as the the other one. It used to haves some bits and pieces for hey readers d'oeovres as small package of REAL crab claws next to their seafood section for $3.99 a piece but this week they replaced it with imitation crab claws the same portion for $4.99 A piece. This was my go-to "expensive" grocery store in Alexandria. I'm well aware it's no Whole Foods which is a real expensive grocery store, hence the quotes. They had everything I needed at all times, was clean, well organized, and the staff was friendly. In fact, I made myself a friend at the checkout and I'd purposely stand in a longer line to say hi to her. The sushi bar is fresh and so good, the deli/cheese counters were well stocked and had great selection, the seafood counter and the meat counter were also well stocked and fresh. There's a Redbox in the front entryway, and if you have young ones there are free cookies inside one of the front doors. Enjoy. read more

This is an excellent Teeter location. It's easy to access with lots of parking. Large store with lots of space to get around and get what you need. It's also typically very clean. Produce is of good quality and is usually very competitively priced. I also like a lot of their in-house products, like bread and deli meat and cheese. I do like that they have some prepared food options which are great. Lots of organic stuff here to pick through as well. read more

This particular HT seems to be having some problems. The produce quality is highly uneven - a couple of times in the last few months I've taken home berries that were cleverly hiding mold a layer or two down, packaged salads that turned into a wilted mess in a just a day, and other indicators that someone's not paying attention. Checkout has gotten sloppier, too; several times in the last couple of months I've noticed and had to correct pretty significant discrepancies - missing specials, ringing in ordinary produce as (much pricier) organic, multiple entries for a single item, that kind of thing. The final kicker, though, last week, was taking home what turned out to be two pounds of (expensive) rancid crab legs. The manager on duty was polite when we returned and processed a refund immediately, but I didn't get any sense that she was surprised nor that anything special was done to review the rest of the stock. It's a shame, as this is otherwise the best supermarket in the area - but with the Van Dorn Safeway renovated and the nearby Giant also having recently upgraded its produce, it's getting harder and harder to justify HT prices. read more
