Everyone wants to complain about the fact that there are too many grocery stores on Merrimon at the moment. However, Harris Teeter is a welcome guest in my book. It's nice to have a 24 hour super market mere blocks from my house, and to hit up Greenlife, TJ's, and this establishment makes shopping a breeze. It's pleasant and new. My problems with this place are the fact that everything seems to be 10-15% more expensive here than at any other super market in Asheville. Produce, meat, beer, all across the board more expensive than anywhere else. I shop here for convenience and I feel like I'm paying for it. read more

This is one of the best grocery stores to go to while in NC. The store is fairly big and has a great selection with great prices.

I found that the staff was not helpful and did not provide service to their customers. I will never recommend this store to anyone. I came in for simple things and I asked for assistance finding items and no one seemed to know what I was asking for. Checking out at 7:35 PM and it was difficult to use my debit card due to the staff blocking the reader. It seemed to me that the staff was more worried about what everyone was doing after work ran assisting customer. This place sucks! read more

New to town, I decided to check out this grocery store with a name I'd never heard of. Employees were very nice and helpful. There is a very nice wide range of products, a great food bar, and lots of sales. I think this place beats Publix by a mile. read more

The store is clean and has a wide variety which is why I'm giving it two stars, however just about every single employer I've encounter there has such an unfriendly, aloof air about them. That is being generous. Now I think I understand-- today I met the manager Howell and he was one of the biggest assholes I ever met. Having come from South Florida where people are known for being rude and aggressive I was very surprised to see a similar tone from the employees at this store especially. In their produce section i picked up a pinneapple only to see flys and knats flying out of the crown of the pinneapple and swarming around the fruit . The store is nice, and open 24 hours with a diverse variety. I stopped in to grab a few things on my way home from work tonight. They had a cashier trying to "cashier" the self check out.... What a freakin train wreck! Not to mention she was super rude because I paid with cash? I'm well aware they do enough business that my opinion doesn't really matter, but I guess I'll just continue shopping at ingles and whole foods honestly. read more

For the price you would think the staff could care a little more. The store was extremely clean and well organized with choices that I am not used to having from shopping at Ingles...I found some very tasty choices at the "Hot" area of the store but when I asked a couple of questions to the staff they acted like they were trying to get away from me as soon as possible or like "huff, I have to do the customer service part of my job?" For working in such a fancy store the staff could use an attitude adjustment. Maybe just a bad day in Deli? We show up around 10pm, spend at least 45 minutes shopping, then find out that the only thing open is the self check out. Their system is absolutely awful... Place the item in the bag, take the item out of the bag, yada yada, for $120 worth of groceries. It would only cost them $10 per hour and I'd be checked out in 2 minutes. Instead it takes 10 frustrating minutes and I leave pissed off. Eff you, ya greedy SOBs. read more

One of my favorite grocery stores in Asheville. Great produce. Great food bar. Great pizza bar. Outstanding sushi. Decent meat department. The biggest downfall is the seafood department. I've bought dead oysters and clams more than once and most of the fish is previously frozen. read more

This Harris Teeter is a good fit in downtown Asheville. It's right next to Trader Joe's, which is next to Greenlife Grocers (owned by Whole Foods). It's a big beautiful grocery store that has everything from the mainstream items you've known, to great local items that are most definitely worth trying. read more

Very good grocery store. Open 24/7 which is a plus if you work night shift like I do. And Thursday is prime rib night for $9.99 and they give you an amazing piece of prime rib and 2 vegetables. Raw uncooked meat is more expensive than what you get for this value. read more

I always come here when I know my favorite staff member Jamie is there. He listens to me, has patience with my orders and cares that it is correct for my children. Yet, his co-workers are there the lack of customer service skills and their work area was a wreck. I decided to wait 10 mins while he refilled his station when he clocked in and cleaned up their messes. When I shop I like to watch how the staff treat each other and how they act to the elderly and children. Only a few out of many acknowledged my children while the rest of the staff just gave them sour looks like they didn't want to be there. This place isn't family friendly, much like Ingles to be completely honest. I would give this place a 1 star, but Jamie is a star of his own. read more

There are about a half dozen grocery stores within a mile . . . so I'm not quite sure why THIS would be my pick, given the alternatives. There's really nothing wrong with it (aside from the prices being a little high for the quality). The selection is okay. Still, I'd opt for the Trader Joe's that is almost literally next door--or the Whole Foods about a block down the street. read more

I ordered a birthday cake for my Dad/s 90th bday celebration over a week before due date, March 1st. It was very large for 90 people as we were going to celebrate it with other residents at The Carillon after taking him to lunch. Long story short, the cake wasn't made on the morning of March 1st when I went to pick it up. I had planned on delivering it to The Carillon prior to meeting my family for lunch so that we could come back at 1:15 and celebrate. The cake decorator was off and the store manager, Kimberly, saved the day. She ended up not only having the cake made by another store and delivered to The Carillon by 1:00 but also provided several balloons as well. Obviously, it was very stressful to think we wouldn't have his cake for the planned celebration. Also, I didn't have time to go to another store to reorder as I was supposed to be meeting everyone at the restaurant for Dad's birthday. THANK YOU for amazing customer service on Harris Teeter's part. When I called the store later in the afternoon to thank Kimberly and to make arrangements to pay for the cake she told me that she was just happy everything worked out and as it was their error she wouldn't accept payment. The cake, by the way was beautifully decorated with a Dallas Cowboy theme and tasted delicious. Everyone kept telling us how much they enjoyed it at The Carillon. I go to this store all the time and will continue to forever do so in the future! read more

Apparently Harris Teeter is MY store. I can't believe the negative reviews about such a friendly, clean and convenient store. It has everything I need and I very rarely and I do mean rarely have to go anywhere else to find what I need. It's clean, the staff is always friendly. I see lots of the same faces over and over and they always greet me with kindness. The store manager Howell always goes above and beyond good customer service every time I've had to deal with him. Guess it's because I'm there nearly every other day and know this store and it's consistently great in my opinion. Sure it will have it's occasional hick-ups, however, the good always outweighs the bad by far. I highly recommend if you had a negative experience that you revisit this store and give it another chance. It's my favorite store and I have a hard time going to any other store and finding what I find at Harris Teeter. It's just so shiny and clean, you don't find that anywhere else!~ read more

Tried to shop at this store yesterday with my husband, but when we entered the store we were assaulted by a nauseating stench that smelled like spoiled seafood. Even My husband's limited sense of smell was offended. The whole produce area smelled bad. We couldn't take it so we left. read more

4 and 1/2 stars. I for one am glad to see Harris Teeter here. Asheville is continually evolving, and there are many newer, hipper store chains (e.g., Trader Joe's) in the area that are filling a need for savvy shoppers. HT is a more traditional grocery chain, but they carry many items that are "green" and organic that one doesn't usually find at stores like Bi-Lo. The vegetable selection here is very, very good--all the traditional stuff plus exotic items like baby egg plants, tiny bok choy, enoki mushrooms, and imported kiwis and star fruits. They have a nice offering of beers (important to me), including some more unusual ones like Guinness Extra Stout. The selection is tremendous--a hot food bar, a bakery, a fresh seafood section, and isle after isle of pre-packaged foods. I found all of my favorites in this store except one--Newman's Own Vodka Sauce for spaghetti. All the other HT stores carry that from Hendersonville to Charlotte. Oh well. Over the years we've found the President's Choice store brand to offer high quality items--their chocolate chip cookies are pretty damn good. Shop here for all your basic needs, then go across the street to Trader Joe's and get all your specialty items. read more

Happy to see HT back in Asheville! The new store is larger and has a lot more to offer then the old one. There is more food (much more gluten free, organic and exotic) choices and they also have the asian bar (delicious!) with a hot bar and salad bar and a fresh pizza bar too (yummy!). The meat/seafood dept had really great selections and cuts of meat. They also have a pretty big deli/bakery and a fresh bread station too. All the employees I ran into were helpful and seemed pretty happy. The prices are a touch higher then a Bi-Lo, Ingles or Walmart, but I think they have much better quality. I do like the coupons that you can use with their VIC card, their BOGO's are amazing and now if you only buy one you get half off (they used to not do this). Downsides are crowded parking (not as bad as Trader Joe's across the street though) and sometimes the lines are a bit long at check out. The wait is massively better then if you were at Walmart though (if you've been to the Walmart on Bleachery Dr you know what I'm talking about). I like going to Trader Joe's for select items, but I will definitely be going back to HT for my regular every day shopping! read more

I really like Harris Teeter - just not the one in Asheville. I have shopped for many years at Harris Teeter stores in Raleigh, NC, before moving to Asheville a few months ago. My experiences at these stores were always very, very good. The primary reason for the positive experiences was simply that each manager and employee consistently provided friendly and outstanding customer service. Sadly the HT on Merrimon Avenue does not. The mediocre attitude displayed toward customers is systemic - from the store management to the front-end/customer service personnel to almost every cashier. (I have found one who is quite pleasant and helpful). I drove an extra 8 minutes each way to Weaverville two days ago to shop at the Publix store and I was truly impressed with the customer service from every employee I encountered - I really felt that I was at a store that embraced Publix's motto of "Where Shopping is a Pleasure." I hope that HT in Matthews addresses this issue. A smile, a "Thank you", a "May I help you?", and showing that one cares about their customers by opening up another lane when it starts to get busy, are free and simple things to do. It's time that the local management team either demonstrates and demands excellent customer service from its employees or is replaced by one that does! read more
