There is one check out lane with a cashier and that is only for 12 items or few... So you go buy your week's grocery. You have a entire cart full of groceries; you are responsible for the for check out and bagging them. And God forbid you need any assistance for any reasons. Apparently it is a big inconvenience for the employees to help you. If I have to bag my own grocery, while a cashier is just staring, standing and waiting in the next register for folks with 12 items or less. I would rather go to another store even though I have to drive little further.

I will go to another Lidl to see if I can find that exact one but every time they seem to advertise Bonsai's, the one I'm looking for is the one pictured in the ad but it's never what they have, lol. Regardless, their prices on plants are amazing! Needless to say, I did not buy anything this trip but this store is amazing! It is huge, clean & well stocked. My local Lidl is so tiny but most of the stores in my hood are tiny, lol. This is definitely one that I would make a trip to, just for the selection!

For the folks that don't know what Lidl is. It is a grocery store with the essentials at low…read moreprices. Similar to Aldi, but better. They have a bakery section that has freshly baked goods like cookies, croissants, bread for a low price. They do have bags (paper and plastic) but you will have to pay for them. Best bring your own bags. I've been to a few other Lidl locations, but I have to say this one is definitely the best in terms of selection and layout. Everything is neatly organized (except for the limited time items - see pics). Good selection of produce, meat, dairy, beer and wine. They even carry some name brand items like Turkey Hill ice cream and Colgate toothpaste, things that their competitor, Aldi, does not have. As long as the food I am looking for is not too exotic, I normally can find all my groceries at Lidl. This is conveniently located right next to Walmart, so anything that I can't find at Lidl or that is out of stock, I would just walk next door. Though I do wish the parking lot was designed better (not that this is Lidl's fault or a dealbreaker). But whoever designed that parking lot should find another profession. There is one main entrance to the parking lot from the main road (Lee Highway) where congestion always occurs. They really should have designed multiple outlets to the main road. Even during the weekdays I could be spending 5 mins just trying to get in/get out of the lot. My only complaints are sometimes certain produce tend to go out of stock (like butter lettuce or edamame). Or some produce are not in great shape (like mandarins). Earlier this year and last year their blueberries often had mold when still in the store. But after I brought that to their attention via their app, I no longer saw that was an issue. Originally they were selling green onion in plastic bags, which made them rot faster. But now they sell them in the open, as they should be. I would like to think that they take feedback seriously. Speaking of the app, it's pretty fantastic. I use it to not only get further discounts on cheap items, but also to find items through the store and compare prices to other stores. In general their items are the cheapest even when compared to Walmart or Aldi. Remember to scan the app's QR code at checkout to get the discounts. I also like how Lidl handles their checkout lines. To minimize staffing cost, they try to keep the number of checkout lines to a minimum. They are able to quickly open or close lines depending on the volume of customers. Though often times you will be waiting a bit to checkout vs traditional grocery stores like Giant or Wegmans. There is no self-checkout options at this store. But their checkout counters have two conveyor belts exiting (see pics) so that the previous customer can take their time bagging their groceries without holding up the next customer. Plus there are counters against the wall for folks who want to take their time bagging their groceries in their carts. The staff are generally pretty courteous and helpful. There are one off cases where the cashier clearly doesn't want to be there. But overall I think the staff are trained well.

Unfortunately for the last few weeks at the DC location, I have repeatedly received expired Bell & Evans grilled diced chicken. This item is the reason I became a weekly Wegman's shopper. So today I ordered from the Tyson's location. The item I received today is now over 2 months past its best by date (05/29/26) and it should've been removed from the shelves. They need to check their stock and remove expired items. The DC store had a best by date of 7/9/26.

There are many staff on the floor who are constantly re-stocking and organizing, and they'll help you find whatever you're looking for. They have a good selection of items, but not too much to cause decision paralysis. I personally don't come here for raw meat products because it's cheaper to buy meat in bulk at places like Costco or Safeway. But otherwise, TJ's has a pretty good selection of produce, snacks and drinks. The garlic naan and the orange chicken (both in the frozen section) are personal favorites!

Kendrick provides excellent customer service - he's fast, friendly, manages a long line with a calm demeanor (and always with a smile), and he goes out of his way to cut/package the seafood exactly the way you like, often hand delivering it to you around the counter instead of making you reach up over it. Shopping can sometimes be stressful, but never when you actually look forward to placing an order with Kendrick.

Unlike all other stores, they require you to "clip" coupons in an app to get sales price vs. just giving you the price when you use your phone number. And when the app did not have the sales price, I was reluctantly given a refund. When the manager came over, she seemed annoyed at me and could have cared less. Unacceptable for such a high end store. I would avoid it.

Imagine my distress as I called the myriad places I'd been during the day. Safeway had been my last stop, and I when reached Mary by phone, she informed me she had discovered my ring--broken on the floor. It was in safekeeping in her locked drawer. How refreshing to know there are kind and honest people looking out for others! Thank-you again, Mary. You have always impressed me with your exceptional customer service, but this act of generosity touched my heart.

Atmosphere was a bit crazy as it was the evening before Thanksgiving, but it definitely could have been much worse. Every employee we spoke to was helpful. Did have to wait a bit to catch the eye of someone in the bakery area, and was a bit disappointed that they did not have any gluten free offerings but directed us to the freezer section. Having said that, we did select some delicious GF cupcakes from the freezer section and found all the other GF ingredients we were looking for.

I've since moved to…read moreCentreville, and while I do most of my shopping now at the nearby Wegmans, I still drive a few times a month to Herndon to shop here. It's a smallish store, meaning it doesn't always offer the selection of some others in the area, but it also means it's not overwhelming. More importantly, to me, it means it's the kind of place where they recognize me, even after coming less frequently, and greet me and chat with me. It's very welcoming and friendly and in a huge chain, that's rare.

Inflation is real, but back in the day, I could get five grocery bags of food for $25. Those days are over. Do I think it's still competitive? Yes slightly, but not going out of my way. Aldi and Lidl are a better bet. To its credit this location, is dated but quite clean. It is obvious the employees take pride in it. That alone is a positive development. They do have some deals on picnic style foods. Plenty of nearby parks. Checkout was a cinch. I like it but don't love it. The folks working here care, and I do wish them the best.
