That's what we found here. It took me a while to get around to writing this, but I'm glad to be sharing good news about Pelham Funeral Home. They were respectful, warmhearted people who asked what we wanted, thoughtfully offered us options and didn't try to up sell like some funeral homes might. They're sensitivity was truly impressive, from start to finish. The funeral home is also nicely furnished, immaculate and well managed. We were impressed at what a nice multimedia presentation they could prepare with photos and memories. They were really dedicated, patient and helpful, using photos from various family members to craft some beautiful memorial booklets, related printed items and video screen images for the memorial/wake. Clive, a dignified, outgoing and very friendly man originally from Ireland, is the best. He was reassuring right from first contact and we actually enjoyed talking with him during the planning. We enjoyed his warm personality and clear interest in doing things right. That says a lot. Clive's colleague Hanah was also wonderful during all of the planning and at the funeral. She kept track of everything and, like Clive, treated us like friends. They're professional, warm and outgoing. If you're looking for a place that will do things right with class, respect and humanity, this is the place. They put us at ease, treated us like family and helped us all get through some difficult times. I am deeply appreciative of that.

They made it seem like they had shipped caskets to other states, but the shipment was delayed a couple days because they really didn't know what they were doing. Some of the smaller things were flubbed as well: they said they'd send the death certificates in the casket itself and then didn't, we chose one inscription for the casket and they ended up doing a different one. At no point did we get an apology or even a "thank you for your patience on this matter". The receiving facility was part of a larger chain, and the Pelham folks made it seem like we wouldn't be getting a personal touch from them, though the smaller company screwed up anyway. There should be plenty of competitors that deserve your business more than these guys.

The entire process and setting made it easier for those who had to make the arrangements and those who attended the wake less stressful. There's a small private parking lot next to the funeral home. I highly recommend this establishment. I've gone to many wakes in many locations and this was one of the better places I've been. The floral arrangements were spread out and displayed with care.

They are laid to rest in the mausoleum wall in the front, by the brook that runs along the road. It greatly enhances a spiritual joining with them I never fail to feel. My sister passed away late in 2019, just before the COVID outbreak. I placed her at the Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport after checking here and finding they charged significantly more for the same kind of interment. I mean a triple-digit percentage more. Recently I have seen prices on Willowbrook's website very close to what I paid at MGC, indicating that perhaps my inquiry was an indication to them they were being outpriced by other local cemeteries. I don't know if I would have placed my sister here had they cut their prices sooner, but it is possible. Willowbrook isn't as majestic as MGC--that was designed by P.T. Barnum no less--but it's pleasant and serene, and closer to what was home. I continue to find new recognizable names every time I visit.

I read about Hartsdale in the New York Times. It's near where I'm currently working, so I had to…read morecheck out the world's oldest and largest pet cemetery. It was a fun little side quest. They have been open since the late 1800s and still bury animals (and a few humans) there. It was interesting, poignant, touching, and sometimes a little funny, to see how much people love/loved their pets. Some graves are plain, some are extravagant. Bubbles the pug's grave showed his full, fun little personality. My favorite was a grave from the 1930s for a dog named, "Dummy." It's so cool that almost 100 years later, I can see how much his people loved him. The grounds are well kept, pretty, and this spring, lots of flowers were planted. Many gravesites were decorated with balloons and toys. The grass is kept trimmed, there is a lot of shade from trees. There are benches on which to sit and reflect. I read this is a family business, and you can tell these people care about the grounds and their clientele. I enjoyed a peaceful spring-time walk here, and it really was enlightening to see how some people truly see their pets as the love of their lives. One gentleman was buried with his pets, and he said that they were the only family he ever had, that they had changed his life, and taught him about true love. Wow. Entry is free and they are very welcoming to visitors. Definitely worth a stop if you're nearby. You are unlikely to ever see anything else like this.
