My husband and I (reluctantly) met a friend group for lunch here yesterday. I can confirm that the food at this place is still every bit as awful as it was the last time I ate here 10+ years ago. It has been a long-running joke between my husband and me that he was gonna get me to go to Harry's with him, and I always grimaced and was like, "EWWW!! NO!!" Last time I had the pulled pork BBQ, it was full of fat, gristle, and dry outside bark, and the sauce was just gross, so I decided to skip that. Instead, I ordered 4 sides: Brunswick stew, green beans, Mac n cheese and French fries. Brunswick stew is supposed to be thick and chunky and made with pulled pork/bbq chicken and lots of vegetables. This version was thin, brothy, and had super finely ground hamburger meat in it, and very little of that. The only "chunks" were some weirdly disproportionally large chunks of onion. No other vegetables, no tomatoes, nothing. The green beans were somewhat edible and decently seasoned, but as evidenced by their texture, very obviously frozen. I mean, at least serve Allen's green beans, those are available with US Food Service! (I know they use US Food Service because I asked the order-taker if their shrimp are farm raised or wild caught (we are an hour from the coast) and she said she did not know but they come from US Foods, which told me everything I needed to know.) Mac n cheese was straight pasta and some soulless food service bright orange form of generic velveeta. The French fries were the saving grace of this otherwise truly awful meal. The French fries have ALWAYS been the best thing on this "restaurant's" menu, although they may not be most people's taste. They are soft and greasy, which is my preference. My husband was not a fan, but I loved them. My husband had country fried steak that he said was obviously from food service, even the gravy. Even though all we ordered at the same time, our group's food came out erratically, with probably 20 or so minutes between the time the first food came out and the last. (We were a group of 8.) My order came out without the fries and the food runner kind of gave me a little attitude, like I was trying to get something for nothing. This place is counter service and literally the ONLY thing the "wait staff" do is bring out the food and clear the tables. You get your own drinks. And they have the gall to ask for a minimum of 18% tip at the register. The choices are 18%,20%, or 22%. For counter service. Out of the 8 people in our group, I found it VERY telling that I did not hear one single person make ANY positive comment on their food. Not a single "MMMM!" or anything. To sum it up, when we were in the car afterward, I asked my husband what he thought. His response? "That place SUCKS!!!" My response? "YES!!! And I've literally been telling you that FOR YEARS!" Folks, if you find yourself in the Claxton/Hagan area and are looking for a place to eat, do yourself an enormous favor and skip this place and go to Cowart's instead. Or, if you've got a taste for BBQ, drive 15 minutes west to Reidsville and go to Dub's. Because, as my husband says, "This place SUCKS!!!" Our group of 12 were all seated together after ordering at the counter. We celebrated a friend's birthday. I had country fried steak with a baked potato, and my wife had shrimp and fries. The servers did a great job. I love the self serve soda fountain. Nice clean bathrooms. Huge seating area was very plain in decor with tons of wood timbers. Always a great place to eat. Been coming here for years, even at the old building that no longer stands. I have eaten multitudes of barbecue and their seafood salad which I just had a pint of... always amazing! Over the years I have ordered Thanksgiving and Christmas smoked turkeys and hams and ... whatever... Their blonde desserts are always something to stop by for. Customer service is always at the top. You will never be in need for anything here since there is always a few people floating around to bring you what you may have forgotten, or refill drinks... Don't trust my review, stop in and see truth before your eyes! As usual, I thought of this about the 4th time they came to refill my drink after I had eaten. Harry's appealed at first because they have a very spacious dining room with good separation between tables. When we got there, we were impressed with the plexiglass between us and the staff, although it was a bit off putting to see the lady who took our order with her mask hanging from an ear. Nevertheless, the plexiglass was between us and the lady who brought our order to us wore a mask. I couldn't see if the cooks were wearing masks or not. This restaurant appears to be newly constructed and all the furniture was new and clean. The floor was clean, too. The food? We'll, I was disappointed. The Cole slaw was real strange. It has no mayonnaise and tasted like ground up salad. The Brunswick Stew was more like potato soup than Stew, very little meat or any ingredient other than potatoes was in evidence (although, it was not too bad as a potato soup). The BBQ had no flavor at all, so it required a liberal application of the sauce to be palatable. However, my wife ordered the whole catfish and declared it delicious. Her French fries were also good. Overall? While not something I would recommend to friends, I want to return and try some different items on the menu before I recommend against this restaurant. As a new business, they may get better over time as people give them feedback. I hope they succeed, as the facility is good and I love small town restaurants. read more

No thanks, folks are friendly but the food is not good. I had the country fried steak and collard greens. The steak had to be out of one of those Banquet frozen meal boxes. Small perfect oval. breading was exactly the same and so was the flavor and texture (gross) and the greens were so over cooked it was like pea soup. $7.99 for that plate, seriously? I expected much more from a small town place serving all sorts of southern type dishes. We had a large party that all ordered various dishes and I don't think anyone really enjoyed their meals. Would leave a zero star if there was an option. Where do I start? With the cashier who acted like we were diseased? The racist man across the aisle? The sickeningly sweet cole slaw or flaccid fries? The shrimp were ok. Just ok. Certainly not $15 worth of goodness. The BBQ potato was very small, had very little barbecue on it, sour cream in a tiny pouch, and unmelted AMERICAN cheese. Come on. Just terrible. To top it all off, five miles from the restaurant and the nausea and meat sweats began. My daughter got sick as well, vomiting down the side of the car and pooped many times when we got home. The meal literally was in the toilet. I paid $45 for a laxative. I don't understand why they cannot get a call in order right. If it was just once it would be different but it's over and over again. Seems like Sandy is the only one that gets the orders right and my family orders from there often. Most of the food is good but I can say Rusty Pig in Glennville has a lot better Brunswick stew. It is full of meat and vegetables not the watered down kind that Harry's serves, it's like watered down ketchup and has no flavor at all. They keep this up about orders being wrong they will loose me as a customer and I'll spend my money where it's appreciated and I get my money's worth of food and customer service. This restaurant served me baked chicken,( that was supposed to be smoked!) that still had feathers on it. ( when I tried to advise them was told that the person I spoke to did not cook the chicken (as if that REALLY matters!?$)Ribs were good. Chopped pork was dry, Brunswick stew is vegetable soup. One star at best. We ordered for pick up. To start, the lady on the phone wasnt very nice. But not awful.We ordered two sandwiches, one being chicken salad sandwich and one being chicken bbq. We received a chicken bbq sandwich and a pulled bbq sandwich. For sides, we got green beans, regular fries and sweet potato fries. Green beans tasted like they were straight from a can, super watery. The regular fries were so soggy all I did was look at them before they went in the trash. Sweet potato fries were pretty much the same, and with almost no flavor. We ordered three pieces of pie. When we opened them, (they were in a plastic Sara Lee package.) They were still frozen. At that point I was pretty convinced that yes, the green beans were from a can, the pie is frozen, the fries were probably frozen at one point and absolutely sucked. And it ended up running us like 30$.Thankfully I'm only in town for work for a week. But if I'm ever back in Claxton, you won't catch me here. read more

Was dying for some good Georgia BBQ- but this was not it. Maybe the worse bbq I've ever had. Brisket was grey, dried meat with no flavor. Chopped pork was only slightly better. When I asked if I could get both on a plate, the server said no, so I had to buy both to try them even though all other meats were available as combinations. Brunswick stew was terrible too. Harry's BBQ has been known for good barbecue for decades; since Harry had the meat cooked over a bed of hardwood coals in an open pit every day! The barbecue is still good, although the cooking method has been updated; but what may be a lesser known menu item is Harry's seafood! We had the crab legs tonight! The portions were generous, the quality & size were good, as was the flavor, the servers were very attentive to the diner's needs, & the prices are reasonable! Growing up, this was the most amazing place to eat! The barbecue was delicious. It was the most succulent, clean tasting bbq, slathered with the most amazing sauce you could ever want. Since then, however, things have changed... And not for the better. So I rarely eat at Harry's anymore. When I must, I do so reluctantly. I feel this place needs a serious cleaning, and needs to concentrate on quality, rather than quantity. I believe going back to the original, traditional, Harry's barbecue style from the 1980s would make this place an amazing success again! People would pay virtually anything to get that taste back again. I don't know anyone who enjoys very fatty barbecue or barbecue that could stand an extra hour cooking. I also don't know anyone who enjoys burned barbecue or ribs. Consistency is the key! I will give one very positive comment, though. Their chicken nuggets are actually quite delicious! I would eat there much more often if I felt the staff cared more about cleanliness of the overall restaurant, including restrooms, and the consistent quality of the foods they serve. Bring back the old Harry's love and amazing bbq sandwiches, slathered in sauce, with the lean, well cooked meat and I can assure you this place would never have a vacant seat! read more

HORRIBLE!! I had a book signing at the Savannah Ogeechee Canal Museum and was headed back home. I asked someone at a local store about restaurants in the area and they directed us to Harry's. We went in, no greeting or anything. We had never been there, so it took us a few minutes to figure out we had to order at the counter and pay before sitting. We were handed our cups to make our own drinks. We made our drinks and sat down. I ordered the small pork bbq plate and my husband got the country fried steak w/gravy. Had it not been for the fact that I am diabetic and HAD to eat, I would have sent everything right back, go t my money back and left! A country fried steak should have WHITE gravy, not canned/instant brown gravy. He had one slice of toast and a few fries. The pork on my plate was obliterated! As in it looked like it had been ran through a food processor and minced, as well as the fact that it was cold! The sauce on the table was VERY thin and watery. The only side I got was cole slaw. I have NEVER eaten somewhere that had only one side on a dinner plate! I got two slices of plain, untoasted cold bread. When the 1st server came over after a few minutes, I explained the multple problems. She said the sliced bread was so I could make a sandwich. Um, If I had wanted a sandwich, I would have ordered a sandwich! I ordered a DINNER PLATE. She apparently sent another server to check on us again and I explained the issues. This 2nd one just shook her head in agreement and said they often had complaints. Plastic cutlery, plastic plates, styrofoam drink cups. Cheap, cheap cheap. Small portions, not even a complete meal unless you pay extra, way overpriced for what you get. I will never go back even though I travel from Baxley to Savannah often. Harry's BBQ is outstanding. Service and food is excellent. Today we tried the chicken and brisket and both were outstanding. I ordered a baked sweet potato and Brunswick Stew for sides. Everything was cooked perfect for my taste. I'm no fan of styrofoam cups, but considering the quality of food, cleanliness and excellent service, I can cut them some slack in their choice of cups. My family and a friend ate here for lunch. Three of us ordered the hot roast beef plate. After we waited about 30 minutes we finally asked a waitress what was the hold up. " Oh, we wait and cook everybodys food so it will be finished at the same time so it will all be hot". Soon thereafter we got our food. Nasty. cold, taste like dog food. Passing through town 2 weeks ago. Went to Harry's and it was the worst barbeQue we had ever had. I got the beef brisket plate and it was so dry and had no flavor at all. Some of it I could not even cut with knife. My wife got the barbeQue platter and the meat was also very dry. Although she did say the ribs were ok. My family and I were traveling through Claxton and happened to see the Christmas parade. We stopped to watch and once over, we inquired of a local where to find a seafood restaurant. We were told that Harry's BBQ had great seafood. When we pulled in to park, I was surprised to see such a large place in a small town. Imagine my surprise when I went in to get a table while my sister and her wife unloaded the children, to find that you had to order your food at a counter, pay, then sit and wait for your food! We had to get our own drinks after we ordered and seated ourselves. The SEC Championship was on the TV's provided around the restaurant. We waited almost 15 minutes before our "server" appeared. Then we waited another 30-40 minutes for our food, which was nothing extravagant. The orders shouldn't have taken 15-20 minutes at most as everything was fried or grilled. We ordered fish, oysters, and scallops as the mains, then added sides, one of which was fried squash, which we never got because the server went to the trouble of showing us our "written ticket", which we DID NOT WRITE, but it was OUR fault we didn't get our complete order! We got our food after the cooks finished watching the ball game on the TV's, (yes, they came out of the kitchen and stood in the dining room watching!). When we started to eat, my sister's shrimp was ice cold, the FF on the child's plate was cold, the Scallop sides we ordered were MASSIVELY OVERCOOKED (I could have played hockey with them). The server was very inattentive, and we had to ask for items that were an obvious need, such as a refill of the "paper towel holder" in the center of the table. We asked for malt vinegar and pepper sauce. She had no idea what we were talking about. Sadly, this place is highly over-rated, and the endless empty seats should have spoken to us, but we were starving. I will not go back, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone! The ultimate kicker? Our food came out on disposable plates! I have NEVER eaten in a place where I spent close to $90.00 and this was the result! I will NEVER go back! read more

First time going to Harry's (about an hour from our house, in GA) to try their BBQ Ribs as we try to eat BBQ in as many places around the Southern States as possible. We always buy two of the same kinds of plates just in the event one is bad, the other one might well redeem their quality of meets and cooking techniques. In this case, we ordered two rib plates. When they arrived at our table, the wife's plate had ice cold French fries and two 4 inch rib bones. My plate had two 4 inch rib bones and four bits and pieces of ribs from an inch and a half to about two inches in length. I took the wife's plate back to the order station to remedy the cold fries and query why she only had two bones. I was told they weigh all the BBQ to a half pound and that her two ribs weighed a half pound. My order also had a surcharge order $1.00 for some mac 'n' cheese. It was inedible mush with canned or bagged cheese sauce. Now to my order of rib pieces... it was the same as my wife's.... over smoked, horribly greasy and what little meat there was, was like trying to eat the rubber from a tire. The ribs were of a cheap quality cut. Otherwise the place was very clean and floor service adequate. This BBQ 'food' experience rates among the top five "worst" BBQ we've experienced in the Southern States but consistent quality with the limited BBQ retailers in this general area of GA.
