I am writing to express my deep disappointment with our experience this past season at Lava…read moreVolleyball Club. While I had hoped this would be a season of growth and confidence-building for my daughter, it instead became a frustrating and disheartening experience -- not only for her, but for us as a family. From the very beginning, it was apparent that the head coach fostered an environment where mistakes were not used as learning opportunities but as reasons for ridicule. It became clear that when players made errors, they were often met with sarcasm or mockery. As a parent, I wanted to speak up earlier, but out of respect for my daughter's wishes and her fear of retaliation -- which, given the environment, I believe was a valid concern -- I refrained. Communication from the coaching staff was minimal and ineffective. In fact, parents were explicitly asked to direct any questions through the players themselves, which put undue pressure on the kids and left parents out of the loop. There was also never any mention or effort made toward team bonding, which is so important for a positive and cohesive experience -- especially at this developmental level. When the head coach was absent, the assistant coach maintained a more positive dynamic. However, even then, the tone among the team seemed immature and cliquish, which I understand may stem from the young age and inexperience of the head coach. The final straw for me, and what compelled me to write this letter, was our trip to Las Vegas. While my daughter played the first day, she was benched the second day after missing one serve -- a single mistake that immediately led to her removal from the game. To make matters worse, the head coach was overheard telling the assistant coach that she wouldn't be playing my daughter anymore -- loud enough for her to hear. She didn't play the rest of that game or the one after. When my daughter respectfully asked why, she was told it was because she missed her serve. All players missed serves throughout the tournament, yet none were sidelined as she was. She was later told she might play again -- but not in her usual position. In the third game, she was put in a position she had never played, clearly unprepared and set up to fail. Despite her effort, it felt punitive, not developmental. If statistics were kept, I am confident they would show that my daughter was not the weakest player on the team. Additionally, she was reprimanded for being on her phone before warm-ups, yet others who did the same were not held to the same standard. It was inconsistent and unfair. What hurts the most is that instead of building her up, this coach tore down her confidence. She took what should have been a highlight of the season and turned it into an embarrassment for my daughter. This is the opposite of what a youth sports coach should represent. I sincerely hope that my voice is heard, not just for my daughter, but for future players. If I am the first to bring this to your attention, I doubt I will be the last. I urge you to reevaluate the coaching approach and the emotional support being offered to these young athletes. They deserve to grow in confidence and skill -- not be made to feel small for trying.

SAVE YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY! Do NOT have your child attend Legacy Volleyball Club. They do NOT care…read moreabout teaching, inspiring or bringing the best out in your child. CHECK OUT THE BULLYING EMAIL ATTACHED. Owner of the club and his coaches only care about WINNING (they even say it!) and, as a result, simply concentrate on the players who can get them there. They talk a good game about creating an inclusive environment and even say "recognizing that the single most important part of each player's experience will be the impact the individual coaches makes on them, our goal is to provide the best possible coaches, who care about the Art & Science of teaching" however in our experience, this was a complete fabrication. They want the parents who can afford to pay their high service fees in exchange for focusing on only the players that can help them win tournaments. Check out the bullying email owner Walt Ker sent to the parents of the team our son was on after hearing many of the parents were no longer interested in paying to fly from California to Orlando only to watch their son sit on the sidelines. (Who would?!) In short, Walt's email is offensive and defines BULLYING and INTIMIDATION. How dare he suggest parents simply make arrangements for some other family to take their kid across state lines?! Not only is that insensitive to life circumstances of player's families, but it is PRESSURING and is delivered with a THREAT to screw up your son's volleyball future by dropping them from the roster if parents don't commit to the Orlando trip by supplying evidence by a certain date. Walt quotes that we signed papers committing to go to these tournaments, but he misses the important point that we signed a Service Agreement, not a contract--a service agreement that his organization did not fulfill for our son. This greed mentality only supports & provides evidence that Legacy isn't always choosing kids for the team based on being a strong player, but rather choosing the kids whose families will financially support Legacy's overall business goals knowing full well that their coaches have no real plans to develop each and every player's skills. TAKE NOTE: This is why during Club try outs, they have parents commit to the tournaments (say they will pay to travel$$) before choosing who is on the individual teams. Give us your money and don't complain if your kid doesn't play is the seeming motto carried out by his coaches. They even tell parents they can no longer bring any feedback or grievances to the coaches or Legacy staff directly, but rather tell you that your son has to do it on their own. Essentially Legacy can avoid adult intervention. In my opinion, the coaches nor Walt have created an inclusive or inspiring environment to grow players, tap their talent, motivate performance. They choose who the A players are pretty quickly and then expect their seemingly lesser players to be props: go to all the practices, attend all tournaments with all the enthusiasm and glee that a player who actually gets to play in said tournaments would have. Why doesn't Walt include the realities of what forking over THOUSANDS of dollars in exchange looks like when hopeful players and their parents show up for try outs?!: 8pm two-hour practices twice/week, being on call tournament weekends never able to plan, 5 AM sunrise in order to devote your entire Saturday or entire weekend just to watch your child SIT ON THE SIDELINES and maybe get 30 seconds of playtime before they are yanked out of the game. And now, we're supposed to shell out THOUSANDS of dollars again to accompany him to Orlando to watch him sit on the sidelines AGAIN? We would've been better off spending $$ on private lessons WITH A PRIVATE COACH not associated with Legacy than this lousy club that tells your kid in so many ways 'you're not good enough and we're not going to help you improve but thanks to your parents for helping with our bottom line.'

While he practiced or competed, I would walk the area to pass time. I had not been back for a good while. Today was a perfectly cool and partial cloudy day. The husband and I decided to pack up our lunch to have it outdoors. We read about some of the improvements that have been made at the SC Sports Complex, so we thought it would be nice to have our lunch there and explore. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived, which was such a stark change from when I used to drive here with my son. Parking was very easy. The park is clean and very well maintained. The familiar spots are unchanged --- Dog Park, Aquatic Center and Gymnasium. The new/updated sections were thoughtfully constructed and designed -- Bike Park, Basketball Courts and shaded picnic areas. We noticed a volleyball court by the dog park which we don't remember seeing before, but it also didn't look new. We were super excited to see that The Rink is being built. We'll definitely be back to see that when it's done. There aren't any clear walking paths -- we just kept wandering around to explore, sometimes having to backtrack to get to another area. It was an enjoyable time nonetheless, especially when it came time to have our lunch while admiring the lovely views of SCV.
