Came here with my sister for early birthday dinner. The hype partly led us here, but also the menu (always changing) sounded very inviting. Upon arrival at 6 PM as a walk-in, we were fortunate to secure a table without a reservation. However, due to the high volume of guests, I would recommend that others do the same to avoid long wait times. The restaurant fills up quickly, and even those with reservations may have to wait. First and foremost, the food was exceptional. In fact, some of the best fish dishes I've ever tasted. It's hard to find fault with anything on the menu. For appetizers, the Ceviche Tropical was served in a coconut with coconut milk and pineapple, which was unique and tasty, but not necessarily something I would order again. The Tostada de Tartare, on the other hand, was incredibly fresh and satisfying. The Betabel/Yuca dish was absolutely amazing, with the cream sauce made from Yuca adding a magical touch to the flavorful beets. Moving on to the entrees, the Filete de Rebalo, which my sister ordered, was a small filet cooked to perfection with a magnificent almond and tomato sauce and a side salad that perfectly complemented the dish. The Pargo en Mariposa was another standout, with a whole Red Snapper grilled to perfection and surprisingly meaty. I cannot recall what it was cooked in, but it was definitely perfect. It's no wonder that it caught everyone's attention and was quickly taken off the menu while we were dining. The ambiance of the restaurant exuded a Boho-chic vibe that is typical of Tulum. The beautiful people added to the allure of the place, and as the sun set, the lighting transformed the atmosphere. However, the smoke from the wood-burning ovens and massive amounts of copal burning caused some discomfort, particularly for those seated near them. To avoid this issue, it is best to book a table away from the ovens. The staff were friendly and accommodating, particularly given the demands of their job, which requires them to explain each item of the entire menu to the guests. With so much going on in the world food and travel is the one good thing I look forward to. Hartwood is an experience. The menu was on a huge blackboard and our server took it to us and read every item on it, going into details as to preparation and made suggestions as to what we might like. Lighting is all candles for a well enough light dining experience. The kitchen we were told is all wood cooking. The ambiance was homey, yet delightfully beautiful with a bohemian twist. Our food was the most delicious. We eat everything and could taste the freshness of each ingredients, we never had to guess what was in our plates. A great food and dinning experience. This place was phenomenal in every respect! The waiter read the drink and food menu off of a board, and he was quite passionate about describing and recommending things. They like to showcase local producers of alcohol and don't want to just shovel the standard tequila fare at you, for example. As some of the reviewers mentioned, the fish collar appetizer was outstanding! Three shareable pieces. I had a grouper dish which was great. Others shared a whole grouper dish option, which would have satisfied 3 easily. Hartwood's lore lured us in for dinner on 1/27/22 and 1/28/22. Getting to Hartwood was quite the adventure. It was my boyfriend's first time driving a scooter and we had an adrenaline filled commute through the busy streets of Tulum to Hartwoods location by the sea. The vibe of Hartwood felt like you were in a secret secluded jungle. The whole restaurant is powered by a single generator, which is a cool eco-friendly concept. On the first night, they had us sit in the waiting area and we ordered The Hartwood and the Passion in the Jungle cocktails while we were waiting. Then we were seated at the bar and had a Devil's Margherita and a Piña Colada as custom cocktails. They were incredible. I asked for their "best interpretation of a Piña colada" and I got the best Piña Colada I ever had in my life. We ordered the Ceviche Tropical and Empanadas de Cochon as appetizers and the Platillo de Pulpo and the Arrachera Angus as main dishes. Everything was mind blowing and epic. It was so good we went back another night and brought another friend. I think I had 3 more Piña Coladas. This dinner was super epic. For mains, we got the Lobster (Langosta Carabena), Fish (Filete de Robalo) and Empanadas de Cochon again. The Lobster was for sure a once in a lifetime experience. It was about 1/2 a foot wide and two feet long and monopolized the table real estate. The bartender and waiter sent us all free coffee shots and took them with us at the end of the night. This was our favorite restaurant during our stay in Tulum. Ambiance (5/5): What a cute little intimate spot within Tulum beach. They had an open kitchen which was fun to look at. Also, their bar area was super cute and had a few seats available. At night, the restaurant beamed with candlelights. Service (5/5): Our server was extremely kind! He was knowledgeable about the menu and even talked to us about Tulum. I thought it was very kind of him to offer additional restaurant recommendations. Food and drinks came out in a timely manner and we did not feel like we were being rushed out. Food (4.5/5): The food was extremely fresh and delicious. We ordered the prawns which are considered an appetizer along with the whole grouper. For starters, the prawns dish was HUGE. There is no way this is an appetizer! It came with a generous amount and the sauce that it was cooked in was absolutely delicious. We both agreed this was one of the best prawn dishes we've ever had. The grouper was also delicious and very meaty. Everything tasted so fresh which was a plus! I knocked off 0.5 due to the drinks. Unfortunately, both cocktails were extremely watered down. We felt as though we were drinking juice and tasted no alcohol in our drinks. Hartwood is on the pricier side (but then again, what isn't at Tulum beach?) however, for the quality we received it was worth every penny. Hartwood is A MUST!!! I received a lot of recommendations to eat here and had to give it a try. It definitely didn't disappoint and was one of my favorite restaurants in Tulum! I'd say ordering 3-4 dishes is the perfect amount for two people. They state "the menu changes daily" but from seeing other reviews/pictures... some of the dishes seem to be "regular" dishes. The servers bring giant menus to your table and explain everything on the menu. Ordered the following: Ensalada de Jicama - basically a ceviche and tasted really refreshing. Prepared with some fish, jicama, avocado and jalapeño for a slight kick. Filete de Mero - grilled fish which came with a hummus type sauce, small salad and roasted avocado. Costillas al Agave - their version of ribs. It came with TWO BIG beef ribs! Roasted pineapple and some pickled slaw. The seating area is outside - beware of mosquitoes. They do walk around with burning Palo Santo to repel the mosquitoes - which is nice! Some of the tables are covered, unfortunately ours wasn't and we finished our meal as it started to down pour rain! I did make a reservation a month in advance via email (as suggested). You can definitely walk-in and you most likely will get a table but you may have to wait a bit. It's obviously easier if you have a smaller party of 2-4 as most the tables are pretty small. I read about Hartwood being the place to eat while in Tulum, so I made a reservation a few weeks before arriving here in Tulum via email. They were quick to respond and will auto reply to let you know which dates are full. Unfortunately, it stormed the afternoon of our reservation. We came to the beach early to walk around and encountered the storm. I've read that since the seating is mostly outside, sometimes the restaurant closes. We stopped by an hour earlier than our reservation time. They have most of the guests under a covering and the rain seemed to be dying down. They told us they can seat us right away and we took a seat facing the kitchen grill area. Our server came by and told us about drinks and her recommendations. She also explained extensively all the menu items. We weren't really that hungry and she suggested we share an entree and some sides. We got the filete de robalo to share and sides of beet and sweet potato. Everything she suggested was excellent. The fish was meaty and tender. The best part was actually the arugula salad on that plate. The dressing was divine. The beet was grilled with a char on the outside and soft and juicy inside. The creamy sauce it was on is the perfect pairing for the juicy beet. The sweet potato was soft and sweet. I enjoyed the sprinkle of pistachio for a nice crunch. We got the ice cream for dessert. One scoop of corn and one peanut brittle. The CORN ice cream was sooooo delicious. Just the right amount of sweetness with bits of corn. The peanut brittle was good, but I liked the corn one much more. They continued to be busy the whole time we were there and everything they brought out smelled and looked delicious. Perfect vibe in this beach locale- dusty floor, low wooden slats over a small area of the restaurant, smells from the wood burning cooking area and the occasional smoke circulated to keep the bugs away from diners. The prawn appetizer was delicious, very nice sauce to dip the freshly grilled fish in- not too spicy. Opted for the snapper and octopus options and both were well cooked and tasty. Beautifully plated, slightly boring dish that was cooked very well. Gambas Mayas (Spicy Shrimp Appetizer) - 5 stars. Very spicy, rich, and flavorful. Shrimp were meaty and so fresh! Arrachera (Steak) - 5 Stars. I'm still dreaming of this meat. It was so delicious, large portion, and seasoned perfectly. Filete De Robalo (Fish Filet) - 4 1/2 stars. The fish was super fresh and I love how everything is locally sourced. The ceviche tropical was delicious and so fresh and made with snook fish. It was plated beautifully and was aesthetically pleasing. For my entree, I ordered the octopus platter (platilla de pulpo) which was AMAZING! It was super juicy and tender and as always, very fresh. This was the best restaurant we went to in Tulum. If you had to choose between Arca and Hartwood, I would go with Hartwood. I made a reservation via email about a month in advance and they were nice enough to accommodate the addition of two more people day of. I'm surprised they said yes because they were packed. It's outdoors on the jungle side and the bugs were a kicking. Even with bug spray and their incense, we got a few bites, so cover up those ankles! The menu changes daily based on what they catch, and the staff go over the chalk menu in detail. Everything sounded incredible which made it hard to choose. We ended up with 6 dishes between the four of us: a crudo, ceviche, 2 whole fish, octopus, and one other thing I can't remember. Either way, it was all delicious. Ambiance is lovely (minus the bugs) and service is quick (but not especially warm). It's also incredibly annoying that they are cash only since not many people carry around that much cash on them.
