This place almost knocked me out a few weeks ago! I mean literally. I got hit by the shade. But you know it was an accident and the owner was so gracious and took care of our table. I'm honestly sorry to have to give Hashes and Brews a poor rating, as I'm generally a lot more forgiving for non-chain restaurants and diners, but eating there just wasn't a good experience. Let's start with the food. My partner and I had the Mexican Hash and Elvis pancakes, respectively. My partner (who is Mexican) was not impressed by the hash, and said it didn't taste very authentic. I enjoyed the Elvis pancakes--named for the fact that they're made with peanut butter, honey, and bananas. The flavor profile was good, but the pancakes were chewy and dry. I enjoyed the flavors, which is the only reason this review is 2 stars instead of 1. Beyond that, the service was not great. Our table was dirty and while the server said she would come clean it for us, she never did. The table only had one set of silverware and I was never brought any during our meal, I had to grab them off of an adjacent table. We were not given water, or asked if we wanted any, and our server checked in on us so infrequently that we had to flag down a different one just to ask for water. The prices were fine. Son and and I had time to kill before picking up friends at SFO, so we saw this and decided to try it. It turned out to be a great stop. Located in a strip mall, we were the only ones in the entire place on a Friday at 8:30am. Vast menu options, one of the most extensive for breakfast I have ever seen. I loveeeee that there is a parking lot. Actually , only came here because the restaurant that we previously visited had a forty five minute wait. But i've been here before during breakfast hours and the food was great. Came here after work on a friday evening, 2 adults with three big kids. Was greeted by the host and was promptly seated. Great spot if you're in the mood for classic American food and a chill spot to watch a big game. Came here after the gym to watch the World Series on a Saturday and it was pretty slow. Service was super quick and friendly. We ordered sweet potato fries to share, which I would prefer to be served a little hotter, but were still solid. The chipotle sauce on the side was a decent pairing as well. I appreciated that they had healthy entree choices. I opted for the broiled chicken breast and my sister got the skirt steak with veggies. The broiled chicken was super juicy and flavorful, and the lemon was a great touch to squeeze on top. The presentation was cute but the drink was an acquired taste for sure. The jelly didn't mix with the rest of the drink so each sip you essentially taste the cereal milk first, then the vodka, then a jelly aftertaste. This place is definitely not fancy, but it has an interesting menu, especially for breakfast offerings. The portions are very generous, so much so that if we go again, we would certainly order one breakfast entree and split it, with perhaps adding a side. It would be plenty of food! BG's Belgian waffle looked really good. She got full only half way through it, and offered her strawberries and banana pieces that she hadn't touched to the rest of us if we wanted them. Also very fresh; especially the banana. We had it confirmed on our little vacation driving trip up to Sacramento / Davis, Nevada City, and San Francisco that there is no such thing as cheap eats anymore. What there are would be large portions at many restaurants, so they might be charging $18 for a meal like a sandwich, or breakfast entree, but it's usually enough for DH and I to split a plate. Otherwise, it's a situation to eat half a meal at the time, and take half home for a second serving later. Getting out of a restaurant for under $60 for the two of us is getting harder and harder. Our budget is under great strain in that way, so eating out will be more of a treat and less of a regular thing. When you're traveling, you've go to just do it. Food: 1/2 star: we ordered 5 plates,all were mediocre at best, the food was not hot and the coffee was too bitter, I'm not a avid coffee drinker,but I know what coffee should taste like and this coffee was bad!. The h&b potatoes were sweet not salty, I found this strange and asked our server, but she didn't know what to say. I asked for hash browns to replace them, but they were very dry and extremely over done. I ordered the steak Benedict's, which were supposed to be with skirt steak, but they weren't. It was a cheap cut and it was tough & dry, the hollandaise sauce was just ok. The chorizo scramble was not seasoned and again the potatoes were sweet. The banana foster French toast was not flambé, the banana was not cooked, the server forgot the caramel and a side order of sausage. The other dishes were sad as well. The server that we had was very friendly and on point with all of our dishes which made for an excellent food experience;but this review is for the Chicken Philly hot sandwich. The sandwich itself was a nice size, but it was served with the meat wormer than the toasted (bun - a little dense) that it was served on, this made for an uneven bite for me. The fries served with it were not hot but worm as well. Grateful Hashes and Brews was open for thanksgiving brunch. I ordered the creamed spinach Benedict and my partner ordered the chicken Alfredo omelette. The environment was bright and open, we were seated within 5mins. Our coffee and sodas ere brought to our table immediately. The creamed spinach Benedict was alright. It was served with house potatoes. My meal could have been hotter, as it was served at room temperature. As I dug my fork into the poached egg, a large amount of water poured over the rest of my meal, which was not expected and strange. I understand the poaching process of an egg, so it's not weird that water had come out of it, but in my lifetime of countless Benedict orders, I've never had such a large amount of water spill out of a poached egg when cutting into it with my fork. The Benedict itself had a sour taste which I wasn't too fond of. I noticed later in the artichokes in the meal, so it made sense. I tasted my partner's Alfredo omelette and his meal was pretty good, however he described the chicken as a bit dry in the beginning but as he got to the center, he enjoyed his meal a bit more. The staff were attentive and friendly. I did notice that someone bussing tables, holding a bin for dirty dishes that were being cleared was the person bringing up refills so I wasn't confident in the cleanliness of this process. Checked out Hashes and Brews for brunch this morning. The parking lot was not full found parking easily. However, the food and coffee were not great. I went with my family and I had a spoon full of each of their dishes. Off the bat the country chicken fried steak was rubbery. The gravy tasted like they cooked it in garlic. I like garlic but that gravy can kill Dracula. I also tried the chicken and waffles also came with rubbery overcooked chicken. But the worst thing I had at hashes and brews was their coffee. One of the worst cup of coffee I have ever had. It tasted like chalk so bitter it was pure torture drinking it. The service was ok not enough smiles but a lot of "I don't want be here" attitude from the staff. The ambience it felt crowded not with people but with tables and chairs. It was like they crammed tables and chairs together so close to one another that I can stretch my arm out and hit another customer in the face . I think this place thinks that an army of people will come in all at once and ask for bad coffee and rubbery chicken. I couldn't tell what the crab was mixed with but it the texture was similar to oatmeal clumps. It was ok. The hollandaise sauce needs a bit of salt. It didn't have the tangy lemony creamy flavor that makes the distinct hollandaise sauce taste. Potatoes looked yummy and well seasoned but also need salt. Food came out quickly. Staff were nice. I tried the chicken fried steak for dinner which is served with a biscuit and homemade country gravy. The restaurant is pretty spacious with indoor and outdoor seating, and it was not busy on a weekday evening. We noticed that the waitress kept asking my friend and I, "how are things", many times while we were dining which was not for a long time. The restaurant was nearly empty with many open tables and chairs, and we were dining hours before restaurant closure. So I read the reviews on different menu items and we decided to share and get the corned beef hash with hash browns, side of chicken apple sausage and coffee. The taste: in all honesty our food was pretty good. It wasn't amazing but no foodie is going to this diner and expecting innovative food. We definitely added salt and pepper to the hash browns for a bit of flavor but overall we were happy with the flavors of the 2 meat items. Our items were not overly greasy as others had posted. The price: it's a bigger plate of food but the price still felt a bit high. It's especially high for any juice or non alcoholic drinks. The rub: the reason I'm only giving this 3 stars is that the one main dish, one side and coffee came out to $40. Why? When we sat down the server asked if we wanted coffee or juice and we got one coffee and one water. You think, ok cool that's sorted, now we just have to figure out what to eat. She comes back w a cup that is on the smaller side for a coffee cup (you can see that it's shorter than a salt shaker) ...maybe a 6oz cup. Then during our meal, she came and offered to refill my coffee so we said yes. We get the bill and it's about $8 for the coffee because she charged another cup of coffee for my refill. At $4 a cup for not special diner coffee is a little absurd but even moreso that it's a tiny cup and ya charge on the refills without telling us. I come here, because my friends enjoy this place. Me myself, I believe it is an average breakfast eatery, so far. I haven't been here for lunch. I've come here three times so far and I haven't been completely happy with the food. I'm not saying the food is bad, but maybe they should concentrate more on the food, than the hash and brews. This last time I enjoyed my breakfast more, because I had a Mexican coffee, which had Kahlúa, tequila and coffee. It's a happy maker, prior to breakfast. This place is AMAZING! A true gem tucked away in San Bruno. The food is really excellent. I have been there several times for breakfast and would recommend any of the egg dishes. The bacon was perfect and the home fries were delicious. I have been there for lunch and they hand make the soup every day. I've had the chicken noodle soup and the tomato basil soup and they were both AMAZING! I also recommend the Gyro Sliders and the Greek Marinated Chicken Skewers on the Happy Hour Menu. The servers were very friendly and responsive to special requests. The layout of the restaurant is lovely. They have a patio available and lots of indoor seating.
