Have ordered takeout from here a couple times as the fusion with Thai food can be fun sometimes. - Tempura: we ordered this once and haven't ordered it since. When I came home with my order, I realized our tempura was missing. I immediately called the restaurant to mention this and they said they would have it ready if I wanted to go back to pick it up. I would have appreciated a discount or something for this lack of attention to detail, but let it slide. When I got there, they handed me the box right away and said they reheated it for me so it should be warm. One thing to know about tempura is that it cannot be reheated - it ruins the entire dish as the tempura batter is supposed to be light and crispy. When you reheat it, it becomes soggy. When I mentioned this, they wouldn't budge on creating a new order. - 49er roll: average 49er roll - Crazy salmon roll: I enjoyed the spice and ikura on top of the roll I would recommend trying a variety of their dishes. I had a Thai iced tea, chicken wings and spider role not necessarily in that order. The beverage seems to taste the same wherever I go. The chicken wings were good served up with a sweet sauce. The spider role was delicious. Liked the crunchy aspect of some of it. The service was good in this small restaurant. Not a bad place to grab a bite. I was part of a group of eight people. They do have an automatic service charge for certain size parties. Since we had the server issue a couple separate checks it didn't occur to me that the gratuity was already built in to the bill. The accompanying veggies and rice were proportioned just right. My dad's tuna sashimi was also fresh, and the cut wasn't too thin. The second experience was for a late lunch dine-in. We are about to embark on a seafood paradise adventure. crazy salmon roll -- I liked this roll more cause of the salmon and ikura (which I think resembles popping boba) heh nikko crunch roll -- this roll was just ok. gyoza came in a cute little boat dish. Hands down the most delicious menu I regularly revisit to try each and every dish. From the service to the dishes served at this small local family business has captured my heart! As a retired chef I search far and wide for the best Thai and sushi...and to be so lucky to get both on the same menu is unbelievable! My partner and I make it a point to dine often here! I will forever be grateful for this treasure in alameda! Most people order take out but I find dining in to be one of my favorite places to indulge. Me and my friends have to decided to give this place a try since we were really craving sushi. Our experience here was amazing!! The staff were super welcoming and nice. They sat us down, gave us plenty of time to order and served us nice cold water :) We came around at a slow time so our rolls were made pretty fast. Nice local place amongst the many Sushi places to go to. A bit different mix of cultures on the menue. I have never had short flavored rice on my sushi. In hind site I can say I would ask for that again if it was a choice to Calrose rice not Jamin. Outside of that I have to say the service was very attentive and not over bearing with the three tables that occupied the place at the time we where there. We noticed a bout 5 different customers picking up orders at the same time. Good to see them busy on a Thursday. Good fish cuts and choices. Seating area is okay, just watch sitting in the window. We're new to the area and we shop at Encinal Market often, so we decided to give Bluefin a try. What a disappointment. Notes about the food: 1. Shari was very lumpy 2. Chicken katsu tasted like reheated, cheap frozen katsu you find in asian grocery store freezers. I wonder if this is how they actually prepare their katsu. I forced two pieces down and refused to continue dining. There are 3 professional chefs in my family and one of them always used to say, "Anything fried has to taste good. You can fry a shoe and it'll taste good." Apparently, not at Bluefin. My biggest problem with this place, though, was not the food (it was at first), but the sushi chef (the one wearing a SF Giants cap) who kept his food preparation gloves on while going out the front door. Yes, with those gloves on, he opened the door, went outside, reopened the door, came back in and back to his station, and went straight back to work -- not changing the gloves. Where have I been all this time? This restaurant has been around for 12-ish years and I've never been in the place. It's the BEST of Japanese and Thai and... A friend and I were headed to a play at Altarena and wanted to have lunch prior to the matinee. Luckily we spotted Bluefin on the map (a very short walk from the theater) and thought we'd take a chance. I LOVE Japanese and Thai, so my hopes and expectations were very high. I was not disappointed at all. I ordered the Chirashi Don which came with several pieces of sashimi on top of sushi rice. I asked what fish was included and the lovely server checked for me. Usually these dishes are "Chef's Choice" so they usually won't make any changes. But she and the Chef both asked what to remove and what to replace it with! Wow! I got exactly what I wanted. My friend had one of their huge rolls and we were both very satisfied. During the meal, Chef Nick gestured from the kitchen 'thumbs up?' and I gestured 'AOK' right back. Prices were very reasonable, the restaurant is small-ish, but nice with outside dining as well. I plan on being a regular there because they got 5 stars for ambience, food (freshness, inventiveness, presentation), and overall experience. Food is ok, ordered from DoorDash, I've got the ticket of what I ordered they messed up on a dish, I called the store to ask to speak with manager, the host said there was no manager available and that they were gone for the day... never has that happen in the restaurant industry I've worked for it before and I know the manager is the last one to leave due to counting banks... now, I asked the girl that answered the phone to see if they can reimburse the money from the dish that was mistaken, she said I have to speak to a manager to get that done, completely unhelpful and rude when speaking, I didn't give her an attitude nor I sounded rude at all, if this is how they handle business I would not recommend it. read more

Bluefin is such a cute spot in a quiet little area of Alameda. The parking lot is small and shared but thankful that one exists nonetheless. I dig the vibe in the restaurant, perfect for small get togethers. I have only ordered for pickup so far. My basic self always opts for a tempura app and a lion king roll. The roll was small in size. I've been served rolls with large amounts of rice which I do not like, so I was satisfied with the portion of this one roll. It seemed over baked because there were parts of the topped salmon slightly crunchy and burnt, but it wasn't horrible. The tempura was okay. I liked the breading, although it was a little much. I was given two large pieces of carrots, two huge onions, two shrimp, two broccoli and one squash. I personally did not like the carrots, and would have preferred sweet potato instead. The carrots still had a somewhat hard crunch to them which I did not enjoy. The onions were thick in batter and had more than one layer in each ring I received so it was just extra. Same with the broccoli. I always love tempura squash and that was perfect. The shrimp was also tasty as well. Overall, considering I had this meal to-go, I still quite enjoyed the food.
