Haskell's in Excelsior has been around forever. Except for the addition of pull tabs, it hasn't changed much. Which is too bad as it sits right across the street from Lake Minnetonka, with great lake views. There's a small deck on the exterior which is good during the summer. Inside is kind of dismal with the low ceilings and low lights. They have a good selection of tap beers. Prices are like a taproom, not a dive bar. They have a food menu too, but I didn't try anything. Go here during the summer and sit on the deck. read more

An Excelsior institution a block away from Lake Minnetonka, I've walked by Haskell's for years and finally decided to pay them a visit last night. Probably the only dive bar in Excelsior, I appreciated the cheap, yet strong drinks. Food menu was extensive, if unremarkable. Prices for food were high, especially considering the Sysco-esque quality of the frozen fries and chicken tenders. Service was friendly, if albeit very slow. I did notice they're looking to hire more folks - hopefully they add servers as they go into their busy summer season. Don't waste your time inside and snag a seat on their outdoor patio. If you can't find seats there go elsewhere. It's the only redeeming part of this location. read more

I've been by this store many times, but when I had a friend visiting from out of state and is a professional sommelier, I thought of this Haskell's since they have a nice alfresco deck overlooking Lake Minnetonka. And I thought probably some nice wine tasting. Boy was I wrong. It was actually quite funny. It's basically a dive bar, no wines available. Well, nothing of any quality. It was basically people sitting outside, enjoying the nice weather drinking beer, and smoking cigarettes. The service was fine, our waitress was very attentive. It was strange to me that a place that markets such good quality wines doesn't have a Cruvinet wine dispenser? My only guess would be that they don't draw that type of crowd. But I think they probably could if they wanted to with all the tourism that street has. read more

Lovely public port in the cute town of Excelsior. Even if you're not going on a boat ride it's a great place to walk near the water and watch the boats! There's a little trolley cart with snacks and ice cream for sale. On the fourth they have the Lake Minnetonka fireworks! Just a short walk up are all of the fabulous restaurants and cute shops on the main streets of town. If you drive around you can see all of the beautiful Victorian style houses. Excelsior has so many new places to eat and drink, but Haskell's is simply a classic! The location is prime! I love to sit on the small patio, enjoy a cold one or two, watch the lake traffic, and the people walking by. The food is typical bar fare, and I do love the wings! Well, I'm personally familiar with Haskells dwntwn Mpls and the name itself brings a certain level of class. I was on a nice boat excursion with the ladies from my church on Lake Minnetonka and we had an hour to entertain ourselves before our bus picked us back up and a few of us thought since the area at the Port was so bright, sunshiny, family orientated and was in Excelsior.. we could step in here since it was close and grab a chair on their really nice patio,.. but once we walked into the front doors of the establishment.. it looked like a dive bar on the inside. It was dark, extremely loud and felt like a dive bar located in Minneapolis. LOL Not the kind of place you want to be found in when you're fellowshipping on a church function with your Pastors wife and other women from your congregation. Their location is an ideal and prime spot. They have a very reputable name, so possibly the food and drinks are an upgrade from the ambiance on the inside. I described the indoor ambiance, but outside, they have a nice patio that faces the street and you can see the Port and the water, which is directly across the street. So the patio is really nice and well worth going inside to be seated. I don't have much of an experience on being seated on the inside. Nor did I get the chance to partake of food or beverage, which was the goal. I will have to maybe visit on my own time, if I'm into that type of atmosphere that day. So for now, the dive bar scene is not what i was expecting when entering. Maybe one day? I'm thinking not. It seems like the local dive bar in Excelsior . I have enough of those in Mpls. read more

We went out to eat at the establishment after some friends recommended the place. We were shocked to see a 5% admin fee added to the food tab on our bill. Nowhere does it state this charge on the menu or in the restaurant. We've eaten at other establishments in Excelsior. None have this charge added to our bills. It might be a fun local bar, but an unnecessary and undisclosed fee is pretty sh**y. The food isn't even that great either. My hamburger was WAY overcooked. And I paid a fee for this?!!!! read more

We were recently in Excelsior with a collection of great friends for dinner and drinks. A few of those friends were Excelsior locals/regulars and knew the area well. When we left the dinner establishment I noticed our crowd migrating around the corner and down the street. Not knowing the area well, I inquired as to where we were all headed. The response was "Haskell's" in a tone that (oddly enough) made me feel as though I should have known that. After hearing many different stories of Haskell's over the years I was glad to finally be able to visit. The bar was busy but not overcrowded, and they had live music. Just about everyone there looked as if they'd had a few, but the vibe was pretty friendly. Our drinks were cheap and came out quick. I can't say much about the patio since it's November and they had it closed. I also didn't order anything to eat, but I'd expect the menu to be a complete assortment of the typical upper Midwestern bar fare. Since it overlooks Lake Minnetonka, Haskell's probably isn't what some would expect to find in Excelsior - and that's definitely not a bad thing! I think most of the Haskell's reviews intend to advise yelpers against setting expectations too high, and I certainly echo that sentiment. This place refuses to modernize and refuses to die. It's definitely a locals hangout. It's the best property in excelsior and they make the worst use out of it. The most enjoyable spot is outside on the rail watching the people board the tour boats. Inside the bar is divey. read more

Haskell's is a great place to grab a beer in the summer. It is located in the heart of Excelsior with great views of Lake Minnetonka and great outdoor seating. I recommend it as a spot to gather with a few friends and enjoy the beautiful Minnesotan summer. That being said... A few drinks is all I would buy at Haskell's Port. The food is typical bar food: fried everything and pretty mediocre burgers and sandwiches. Don't go to Haskell's expecting a great dining experience with your family, because the clientele consists mostly of regular patrons who prefer to drink their dinners. All-in-all, I like Haskell's. The bartenders are friendly and deft at doing their jobs, and it is a low-key atmosphere conducive to relaxing and enjoying friends and summertime. On a recent excision to Excelsior I stopped in there with two others and had the worst dining excerience of my life....even the waitress hated the food there and knew it sucked (she literally told us "the kitchen here sucks") I watched her have to comp at least two meals during the course of ours The dumplings were fried...like crunchy, greasy, diaguating, inedible weirdness . One of the people I was dining with ordered a sandwich that came out on burnt...yes, actually burnt, bread. Only plus sides are the rootbeer they have there is delicious and they have a patio....but I will never ever go back there again to eat....even talking about this I have a bad taste in my mouth. read more

So disappointed - went here with my wife and son on Sat for a quick lunch and other than the premier location outside the rest left me wondering "why?" The Ruben sandwhich was made with what appeared to be Budding prepackaged deli meat and it tasted like it. The burger my son had was ok but the fries were cooked too long in oil that should have been changed out days ago. Then the mini turkey burgers came out - definite fail there. Paper thin prepared frozen turkey patties that were overcooked and had no flavor at all. Stopped in after visiting the Ice Castles, and unfortunately, did not have a good experience. We were a party of 4, and we seated ourselves. After about 5 minutes or so, the waiter came and took drink orders, and the drinks were delivered fairly promptly, but it went downhill from there. After about 20 minutes, the waiter came back and asked us if we were going to be ordering any food. Odd question, since we were looking at menus. He took our order, and then didn't see him for 30 minutes. He never came back to see if we need refills, more drinks, etc. Finally, I noticed the cooks in the kitchen grab a ticket and look at us kind of strange. I surmised that our food order had not even been started. By now we had been in the restaurant for an hour. My husband went up to the kitchen window and asked what was going on. At that point, the waiter finally came to our table to apologize and say he had forgotten to put in our food order. Really, after seeing us sit there for 30 minutes after he took our order??? My husband put on his coat and said he was leaving. The waiter comped the drinks, but unfortunately, we left there with a bad taste in our mouth (not from the food), and empty stomachs! read more

I Have been eating here for 10 years, the food has at times been hit or miss, but for the last few years it has been good quality bar food with great drink prices for this town and a pretty fun loving staff and crowd. Location is great for the lake Minnetonka area.
