Hip, understated place to go wine tasting. Really the whole wine scene in Murphy's is something to see, now before it gets big and expensive and the tourist busses' start rolling through. Hatcher Winery has a tasting room in downtown Murphy's and it is a kick. They have some great wine, including a Zinfandel, a Viognier, and a blush Cinsault (sin-so). The guys who own it like to have a good time and talk wine with you and the prices are really good. Well worth it when you're in the area. read more

What a great hide away discovered by a girls birthday trip to Murphy's. We were late in the day, but they made us feel welcome and right at home. We had a great time. Sewell was very charming and even made us laugh with a few of his jokes that he had up his sleeve. The Reds were exceptional and I purchased a case since I'm not sure when I will be back in town. My wife and I have visited wineries and wine tasting rooms in most appellations in California & Oregon for the past 25 years. We visited Murphys for wine tasting on a Thursday, to increase the likelihood of discussing the details with local winemakers during our tasting experience. Hatcher is a gem! Sewell Hatcher treated us to an extensive tasting sequence of his wines. He readily shared his wealth of knowledge of his wines, as well as an insightful description of the winemaking practices in Calaveras & Amador Counties. He graciously opened a bottle of 2014 Granache (despite the fact that he was almost sold out) that was absolutely heavenly. We bought several bottles on the spot. We'll definitely be back! read more

We came here the last weekend in August for my birthday. My friends and I had a reservation. It was my 40th birthday so there were about 12 of us. This was our first stop. The guy manning the tasting bar was awful. Rude. Spent zero time talking about the wine to us. I've actually worked in a winery so I know how it is supposed to go. The guys was a complete jerk. Everybody's pour was completely different. He was spilling it all over the place. And he wasn't busy. Besides us there were 3 other people in there. Needless to say we left without buying anything. When we were leaving 2 of our party used the bathroom and he didn't know they were still there. He remarked, "I hate all women parties. They are so needy and think it is all about them. I'm not here to cater to you. I'm here to sell wine." When he saw they were still there he said, "Oh not you though." Nice recovery. Your loss though. We bought at least 2 cases at every other tasting room we went to. Won't EVER drink your wine again. And after reading A LOT of the other reviews looks like people had the same experience as I did. Time to fire that guy Hatchers Winery. He is bad for business. read more

We visited Hatcher Winery this past Saturday, March 5th. This was another winery that was highly recommended to us by friends who had visited. And we were not disappointed. The wines were very good. Some of the wines that we tasted were: Grenache, Sewell ( an excellent blend ), Cab, Mourvedre, Barbera, Zin, Syrah, and Ice Wine. My favorites were the Sewell, Cab and Mourvedre. The Ice Wine was excellent, and my one friend bought of them. I actually went off the bar, and purchased the Malbec without tasting. This was based on the server's recommendation, and my observation of people just coming in and buying it. Sometimes, you just need to go on instinct. What is funny to me, are the reviews of Sewell, who was our pourer and brother of the owner of the winery. I believe it is all about perception, and how you "go with the flow". Sewell was a bit aloof at first with our group, but defintely warmed up as we continued to interact with him. When we got there around 1pm, the place was busy, and got even busier as more groups arrived. He does have a talent for pouring for large groups, as he was continually buzzing around to make sure everyone was taken care of. Our group was impressed. And I kept hearing him say, "this is not busy"... Well, with about 30 people in the cellar tasting room, I considered that busy, but he easily dealt with the situation, until a young lady arrived to help him out. We really liked him, and if you want to get on his good side, mention the Giants..haha As someone mentioned, the winery is a bit tucked away. Look for the sign, and then walk down the steps into the cellar. Hatcher should definitely be in your Top 5 Murphys wineries to visit. read more

I took my niece to Hatcher tasting room in Murphy's about 7 years ago when she turned 21, had a great time with Sewell. We went again this last Sunday. There was a big guy with dark hair pouring. For some reason, he didn't seem too interested in helping us out. He was rude, very rude. I said I only wanted to taste the red. After he poured the wine he walked away, I said could you tell me about the wine.Without even looking at me he said, it's on the paper you can read it yourself! If I could give them a ZERO I would. The customer service is beyond rude. I am a regular in Murphy's and have visited all the tasting rooms there. It is home away from home for us. We love it here and buy a lot of wine. We have visited Hatcher before but this time we were treated horribly! The man behind the counter told us "we were like old people crossing the street, slow!" while tasting our wine. It was a little past 5 and apparently he wanted to go home. When we told him we were going as fast as we could he took our glasses away and said our tasting was over!?! He also said that the owner would back him up! Good to know! There are PLENTY of other tasting rooms that would love to take our money. Too bad.. their wine was decent. But I will NEVER be back. And I will tell everyone I know not to patronize this place. read more

One of my favorite places, if not my FAVORITE place, on the Murphy's Strip!!! First off, The location is great, right in the middle of everything, so you've already tried some wine, but your taste buds are still in tact. The tasting room is down some stairs and it's COOL, literally - temperature wise. I only get a chance to go once a year - there was a dog there once, which I was told is a regular... LOVED that! The staff is always SUPER friendly. and the best of it all, they have sweet t-shirts and tank tops there that are fashionable - especially after some Hatcher merlot... read more

I'm reading the bad reviews for this place....kind of surprising really. I don't think they would intentionally be offensive to anyone, but a long day of pouring wine for people in a VERY small room with no windows, can be tiring, as someone said, one person needed a break. I think people are imprinting their own issues on these guys. They are pretty down to earth, easy going, and if they seemed to be offensive to anyone, I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding. Some people are just way too sensitive and perhaps, they just didn't really notice because they're always pretty busy. We joined the wine club, in fact at the event, after talking in advance. So cool about the whole thing, and went to their event at the winery, and it did not disappoint. They was tons of food, and so much wine it was just unbelievable, i mean like 80 different combinations varieties and vintages at 6 different tables, with a total of at least 10 people pouring wine and no scrimping. They'll pour you as little or as much as you like. With so many varieties it was more of asking for less than more, unless you are sitting down to eat and then we picked out dinner wine and asked for a dinner pour, no problem. Never seen anything like it. 1st was appetizers, with some 6 different varieties of cheese, such good cheese, need to find out what it was, and nice prawns. Dinner was awesome too, and plenty of food, with pork left over. Salad was great. Everyone got fed, everyone had a seat, it all went off without a hitch, and Sewell was working like a dog at the BBQ and both brothers running around making sure everything was right. I mean they were working, not just observing. We still have yet to try any other wine in Murphys....we came home with various years of Barbera, Zinfindel, Syrah, + our wine club shipment. Those seem to be some of the varieties that do really well here, but well we have some new one to try with our shipment Bottle prices average about 20 with the discounts. So we're happy, and can't wait till the next event! For other people, I will say this, the wine is great, the people who work and own the place are great, the wine events are great, but the tasting room is a bit claustrophobic . So if you were expecting a Napa style tasting room, well that's perhaps the only thing I could say could use a little improvement. But if it's the wine that's important to you at a fair price, well this is the place. read more

Excellent, excellent wines, Sewell is a real character and great fun (give him a chance, he's a very nice guy when you spend some time with him but he's definitely not "vanilla" - he's a character and this is a good thing!). His co-worker was definitely right about their wines; amazing! We tried them all and there was not one that we didn't enjoy. We stopped in around 3:45 and the place was busy. Stood at the middle of the bar and were ignored for a good 5 minutes. We went in to buy some wine but walked out wondering if we were invisible. This was not the best wine in town but decent. The tasting room was very fun and in a cavelike basement. There were a lot of big wigs and vacation homeowners in there though. They allowed some dogs into the tasting room...why would people bring their pit bulls or whatever into a cafe like tasting room with crackers and wine??? still shocks me. read more

This winery at first seems fine and somewhat cool with its downstairs location. Then you get hit with the rest. Service was poor & the man behind the counter (I think he was even one of the owners) was very rude to all the patrons. We were only able to taste two wines because it was taking too long and no one was paying any attention to our party. Not one of my favorites. There are plenty of Wineries in the Murphys area that will gladly serve you some great wines with a smile on their faces. read more

"Drink it or Dump it." That is what we were told by the man pouring our tasting. Keeping it classy at the Hatcher Winery. I've visited wineries all over the world and I have never been told to "Drink it or Dump it." in this way. This was my first time to Murphys and my girlfriends and I were enjoying a lovely warm day, wine tasting while our husbands were off with the older kids skiing. This man behind the counter had ZERO interest in providing us information about the wine or even having us in the building for that matter. Perhaps he thought the louder millennials behind us at the other counter would make better patrons, as he asked us continually to scoot down closer to the wall and tried to hurry us with each drop (and I mean drop) he poured in our glass. Hence him asking us to drink it or dump it. Wine was pretty good, but too bad I won't be buying it or recommending it to anyone. In fact, I've told this story to probably 15 people over the last two days, not to mention my Facebook friends and the NorCal Mom Facebook page I manage. So, we went on down to Newsom Harlow where they were incredibly lovely and we each bought several bottles. read more

We were in a large group and he was constantly telling us to quite down (which I can understand) but after that he cut our tasting short and started a fight with one of our friends. Keep in mind he's got at least 30 years on us. It was very inappropriate. This was only our second stop so we weren't drunk or too loud. I would never recommend this winery to anyone. Sept 2012 Context: we were on our way to a hatcher dinner event and decided to visit the tasting room in Murphy's where two of us did the tasting. It is free for wine club members and five dollars otherwise. Atmosphere: the tasting room is in this back basement room that is kind of difficult to locate. From main street you have to look down the little alleyways for the hatcher sign. It's across the street from grounds. It is very small inside so only about ten people can taste comfortably and even then it's quite loud. There is a long granite bar. Service: the servers were quite friendly if not deeply knowledgable. Wine: the wines are good, solid choices and for the price, mostly around $20, a good buy. They tend to have a similar spicy profile, as if all had a Zinfandel background, but there are exceptions like a lovely, soft petit verdot. The spicy wines are full flavored and fruit forward. Whites are also fruit forward but not sweet. They can make up to 50 or so wines so there is a wide selection. The tasting room offers about seven to taste. We especially like the viognier, the 08 merlot, the reserve Cabernet 08 and the estate zin 08. read more

My husband and I tasted at Hatcher during the President's Day weekend and both really enjoyed ourselves. The wines were excellent, the prices were great and the customer service was seriously good - especially since the tasting room was bursting at the seams! Hatcher is probably one of my all time favorite wineries because they have so many quality wines both white and reds. I have been coming here for several years as well as a half dozen other wineries in Murphys and I have never been disappointed. Their wines are reasonably priced and the tasting room is unique. We have always been treated well by Sewell and the rest of the staff but this is a more serious tasting room. If you are on a party weekend with your closest 12 friends then this is probably not your best place to stop. We all want to have fun while we taste and learn about wines but if you are being loud and or pushy then Sewell will probably encourage you to leave. There are plenty of other places in Murphys to carry on a party where you will be better received. read more

I have always been a fan of Hatcher! Even before I was 21 I would come here with my parents. They have one of the most in depth flight in the county and have a great atmosphere. I have been to tons of wineries in the Napa, Alexander and Dry creek valleys. Hatcher is still a family favorite! The Hatcher brothers are the go to dynamic duo! Props to them in producing some of the best wine in the county! read more

We have been members of Hatcher Winery for two years and attended a number of their functions. We visited the tasting room late in the afternoon on Sunday Sept 23rd, 2018 to pick up our wine club bottles. Although, we know Sewell (part owner and the head of the tasting room) can be quite surly, we have found that this bad behavior has spread to other winery employees. On Sunday, we were served by a young man (tall, brown hair, late twenties early thirties, partial facial hair) that treated us very poorly. We found him to be short natured, distracted and arrogant. Although, we are used to Hatcher Winery never remembering out names, this person's behavior was way over the top. Also, on one occasion earlier this year, before closing time, the same employee hurried us out of the tasting room because there was a Hatcher's employee party (he was to be cooking pizza) and he wanted to close the tasting room early (there was no notice of this early closure of course) He was quite rude that date also. It seems that Sewell's poor customer service and poor attitude is spreading to other employees and we have had enough. We are members of a number of other wineries in Murphys. They always remember your name and are happy to see you in their tasting room. If you are looking for this impersonal relationship as a wine club member and attending overcrowded impersonal events with long lines for food and drink, be sure and join their wine club! We have had enough. We are saying Good-bye to Hatcher as a wine members. read more

We have been coming to Murphy's for over 25 years and love the friendly aoshpere of the area. We used to buy Hatcher wine frequently, but we no longer do. Three years ago we came out of our way to buy your Eskimo ice. We drove through the town to buy it specifically. It was the last bottle. Sewell (the wonemakers brother) told me he had to charge me an extra 15% because it was the last bottle. I left without the bottle. Last weekend decided to come try the winery again. The wines are fabulous- We did a wine tasting for president's weekend and I asked to purchase the Sewell wine. Ironically as it has been a LONG time favorite. Sewell was our pourer and aside from his crude mouth was nice. When I asked for the wine he says, "What about everything else you tasted" and turned and walked away. The four of us would have all purchased a bottle, but after his rudeness we all walked out. Easily over 200.00 between all of use. One wanted a case for her wedding.... Someone else CLEARLy needs to run the tasting room. I am disheartened to say that I will no longer be coming, to this winery despite the great wine. There are other places (Miliare, Irish and frogs tooth) that have better wines and are much more kind. I'd rather spend my money in those places read more

My friends and I recently visited Hatcher Tasting Rm in Murphys. I have been in Public Relations ( Customer Service Management ) for the last 37 years and this had to be the most horrific experience if my life. We entered the Tasting Rm and approached the serving counter where on a cutting board was a loaf of bread and a cutting knife . We had been informed by another Tasting Rm to try their bread as they bake it for their Patrons. Listen to what comes next - Sewell Hatcher walked over and grabbed the cutting board and bread and thru it up against the back counter - started screaming repeatedly to get out ! He proceeded to come around the serving counter and did everything but physically push us out - still screaming like a maniac and calling us tramps ! I have never been so appalled!!! This Server names Sewell Hatcher is Mentally Disturbed! Please do not visit this Tasting Rm and ruin a wonderful trip - Hatcher winery tasting rm deserves no stars !! read more
