I had a glass of their wine when dining at a local restaurant, and I really liked it. Good tasting menu, and we liked their Rose, Melbac and petit Syrah. Price is reasonable too. Tasting room is cozy and modern, and inside was very well air conditioned which helped in a hot day. Big outdoor seatings and tables in a shade, and mister is going with huge fan browsing. It was our first time doing wine tasting and did not really know how it goes. We were given a menu and each wine was brought out to us one by one. Each was explained, what year it was made, how it compares to the other wines. It probably would be nice to be able to sit longer and order some food to go with our wines. BEWARE! Service was great during the wine tasting, but they charged me an extra bottle at check out. While questioning the high fee (multiple times!), they were persistent that the charge was correct and didn't bother to check what they were charging me for. They asked if I wanted a detailed receipt. After receiving the emailed receipt, I saw I was charged for a third bottle of wine, when I was only packaged and only asked for two. When I went back, they said they don't know how to do single bottle refunds. Be careful!! read more

The 2023 Rose was delicious. Nick gave us a taste as it was not included in the tasting. Nick was the one-person-show this trip. The Derailed was delicious again, so I bought 2 Rose's and 1 derailed. First time here. Cool (literally) outside tasting under a canopy and misters for those hot days. Funny table names as well. We did get a seat inside. Super tiny tasting room. Great price $15 for 5 or 6 tastings. Zinfandel is their thing and they did not disappoint. Price points pretty good too. Only issue we had was the place was hopping and there was only 1 gal doing all the serving (who was part of the family) and the wait between pours was quite long. When she could give us attention, she explained the wines beautifully and was open to further discussion about what we were tasting. If there is only 1 server, be prepared to wait. read more

The Tasting room is underground, easy to find off main street. The natural rock walls make it a cool cave. We bought a red & white wine for gifts. Lucky for us, Todd's local sourdough bread was delivered there fresh, so we bought 3 loaves. We had never tried it before but heard it was the best. I agree! Very cute spot to stop for wine tasting or a glass (or two). Staff was friendly, however they never came back to provide us the bill after we were done. We had to find them inside. I love coming to this tasting room! The wine is arguably some of the best. However, the new-ish rule (last time I came it was only 2 bottles) that the purchase of THREE bottles of wine replaces ONE tasting fee is absurd. It absolutely deters me from buying any wine on principle alone. The wine is not cheap by any means and having to purchase well over $60 worth of wine (that's if you get three of the cheapest wines) to replace a $15 tasting fee is just silly. Really hope this changes!! read more

Super cute and friendly tasting room in downtown Murphys. There's minimal indoor seating with plenty outdoor (with heaters). The tasting was $15 for 6 wines - waived with 3 bottle purchase. Mostly reds and they specialize in Zinfandel. The wines were tasty and each had different notes. The staff was very friendly! Lots of info on the wines but also happy to answer questions. Definitely good and decent wines but the overall experience was average. The tasting included a good variety of wines but the pour were very small, two small sips - if that which barely was enough to get a good sense of the wine and didn't leave us wanting more. Our server was very intense, she was very nice and friendly but talked a lot and since the pour were small it almost seemed like we were being rushed out for the next party (they were extremely busy). Perhaps if we ordered full glasses instead of just the tasting it wouldn't felt like we could stay a while. Overall, loved the outdoor space, the wines were decent but the tastings small. First stop in Murphys and we are not disappointed. Friendly reception and clean well appointed tasting room. The star of Newsome Harlow is their Petite Sirah. For $26 a bottle you get a well structured, well balanced full of black and blue fruit nectar of the gods. We tasted 7 Wines and enjoyed the Petite Sirah the best and the Zinfandel a close second. Wines are inexpensive and tasting fees are waived for every bottle purchased. Did we like Newsome Harlow, hell yes. We give it 5 stars! As good as it gets. read more

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Went on Sunday afternoon and sat inside. Tasting are $15 each but waived if you buy 3 bottles - average $30 each. Cheaper tastings are available at other wineries and there are more than enough wineries to choose from in this downtown location. Be warned: pours are very small and for the price, you will get more for your money somewhere else. read more

Absolutely love this place! First and foremost their wines are incredible. We've been coming here for years and have never experienced a bad wine. Next, the location is awesome. We enjoy the back deck over looking the park as much as the courtyard. Heaters, misters and shade making it possible to relax all year long. Finally and most importantly is the staff. Mike is great and always greets you with a smile. He is welcoming and cares about your experience. And I can't forget our favorite member of the team, Sydney. Fantastic wine! Great selection of quite a few different types of wine and they were all honestly pretty delicious. They have a nice outdoor seating area both in the front and back so if it's a nice day or you want to be a little more spaced out during pandemic times there are options! Good wines in a clean and modern atmosphere. Unfortunately when we stopped in it was very busy and it seemed like they were struggling to keep up. It was a holiday so it's understandable, but the other tasting rooms we visited seemed to manage it a bit more smoothly. There also seemed to be some service and logistical issues they were working through at the time. The price point is a bit higher than other tasting rooms in town, but not necessarily higher than you would find in Sonoma, Paso, etc. We ended up taking home one bottle. It's dog-friendly, which we appreciate. read more

First let me start by saying that if you don't have Ashley, come back and make sure she is on shift! This woman is legit and honest which is more than I can say for most servers. Our wine was good, there were a few I really enjoyed, but realistically the few I did enjoy were amplified by Ashley's upbeat positive attitude, even when there were some pretty demeaning members. The gang here at Newsome Harlow is singularly focused on the experience of our customers. Our goal is to pay particular attention to your tastes in wine so that we may bring to you the wines and stories that are tailored to your preferences. Furthermore, we may be winemakers and wine marketers, but we are wine drinkers first. So we get that not everyone cares how many awards our wines have won, that we work with some of the greatest Zinfandel vineyards in the Sierra Foothills or that the small batches of wine we produce are becoming harder and harder to get. Most people care that our wines taste good. Really good. And we get that. That's why we pay attention to the details -- we walk the vineyards, we know the land, and we steward the greatest wines we possibly can into existence -- and let you reap the rewards.

History

Established in 2000.

Scott and Melanie Klann, along with their partners, founded Newsome Harlow in 2000. The first vintage produced 150 cases. Newsome Harlow now produces over 6,000 cases per year of 6 Zinfandels, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc. 75% of these wines are sold directly out of their tasting room to the tens of thousands of visitors to Calaveras County each year.

Meet the Business Owner: Scott K.

Anyone who's tasted Scott Klann's creations immediately senses that this is a man who knows his art, but won't ever rub your face in it. Everywhere he goes, Scott leaves a trail of beautifully crafted, accessible wines that please the palates of aficionados and amateurs alike. His more than two decades as a winemaker -- starting as a cellar rat and moving up the ladder to become winemaker at some of the Sierra Foothills most notable wineries -- has helped put the Calaveras County wines on the map. Among Newsome Harlow's biggest assets are the relationships that Scott has developed over his many years in the business. These relationships allow us access to some of the finest vineyards in not just the Sierra Foothills but throughout the entire state of California. Owner Scott Klann was previously the winemaker for Twisted Oak Winery, as well as Tanner Vineyards. His wife Melanie Klann is widely considered one of the most CREATIVE chefs in the region.

The quality is good here better than most Murphys wineries and we have tasted quite a few however you will pay a premium they are bit pricey as well. I was tempted to join the wine club but we belong to so many already and I didn't want to commit to quarterly pickups if they had a semi annual option I probably would have joined. We will be back!

They are located just outside of Main Street where most of the tasting rooms are located, so it is a perfect place to stop on your way in to town. The grounds are charming and filled with a garden and outdoor pavilion for wine club members. A perfect place to enjoy your wine flight on a lovely day! Upon stepping inside you feel a sense of calm not only for the cozy atmosphere but the lovely lavender fragrance from the lavender bundles. Kirsten the owner is a fantastic hostess. She is a wealth of knowledge about her family's winery and history in the farming industry. The wine list was presented to us and we were encouraged to relax and enjoy the experience. Don't mind if we do! We made our way to the tables within the barn and commented what a perfect place to gather with friends and family while enjoying some delicious wines! Our flights were brought to our table on the cutest little serving tray along with some tasty treats to enhance the experience. Every single wine was delicious! I'm not a fan of big jammy reds at all and none of the reds gave that taste. I'm obsessed with their rosé and Aspen white blend. The Sequoia red blend is also a favorite. We were so impressed with the quality and flavor of the wines as well as the entire tasting experience. If you are looking for a new wine tasting experience in Murphys I highly encourage you to give Locke Vineyards a try. Cheers!

Does good wine excuse poor behavior?…read more 5 stars for our 2025 experience and 1 star for the return trip in 2026. Summertime is for family reunions, lake fun, and wine trips - we were blessed to get everyone together this summer and planned to dedicate our last day to Hatcher and Locke Vineyards as they were two of our favorites on Highway 4. (Note: Murphys has 25+ tasting rooms less than 3 miles away which offers stiff competition) We had planned on enjoying some sandwiches with our wine but alas they do not allow outside food unless you are a member - I learned that from checking the website later. I hadn't checked for such a rule before visiting. I know of no other places with such a rule which is why I hadn't thought to check - my fault! After learning from Kirsten that no outside food was allowed we returned everything to the cars and opened our little sandwiches. No nefarious intent, just a group of hungry people (8 adults and 2 kids) eating quietly by their cars before returning to taste. Our "picnic" was a sandwich, some watermelon, and 1 large bag of chips to share - not an obnoxious spread which is what one would have assumed from the aggressive response Kirsten thundered down upon us as she charged towards our cars demanding to know what was going on. I really had no idea our act was so offensive, we thought it was the right thing to do. We could have left and eaten by the public road just outside the gate if we were making a point but that wasn't our intent. We just wanted to eat something and not rush our tasting. It was surprising and disappointing to see this side of Kirsten - we had enjoyed her company last time. Perhaps she was having a bad day, or perhaps we got her on a good day in 2025 and this was her baseline level of service. It doesn't really matter, once the veil has fallen it is hard to see past the ugliness. Kirsten couldn't quite land on a reason for her response and seemed to regret her aggression almost instantly as she waffled between reasons for the "no outside food" rule. First it was a State of California rule, then it was the County, then it was because she did not have a license for food, finally it was her property and she could do what she wanted. I found it so puzzling to listen to her move through all of those excuses in one breath as no one had challenged or questioned them. There was no need for the multiple explanations - no one was arguing with her! Kirsten ended her tirade saying we were welcome to come in and taste but not with food. We simply accepted our experience was over, as returning to taste would have been tainted by this strange parking lot interaction. I pondered the experience overnight and I can't quite believe how different the 2 personalities of Kirsten appeared from 2025 to 2026. Imbibing makes some happy while others tend to show more aggression I suppose. Now we just have our cases of Hatcher and Lavender Ridge to remember our trip - although something tells me the experience of Kirsten will live on as a meme of absurdity in our family stories of summers in Arnold. *Reply to Kirsten* It's a review on our experience, not a personal attack on you. That's business. Looking at the responses you post to reviews with less than 5 stars I see a pattern of ad hominem attacks and falsehoods. They demonstrate a lack of EQ and professionalism on your part and you represent the business. I can't be the only person in your life who has tried to explain that to you. I am sure some family and friends have politely suggested you try to respond with grace and not vitriol when online - look at some of the professional responses from other businesses if you don't believe me. We won't get in the gutter with you and resort to personal attacks, it just isn't our approach to conflict, but I do hope someone you care to listen to will try an impress upon you the importance of listening to feedback without resorting to personal attacks on guests. These reviews last forever and other potential guests will read this for years to come - your defensive posturing will turn people off.

This place is family owned and operated, and of course, everyone is extremely knowledgeable about their wine, where it comes from, and all that stuff. My friends and I got flights, so we could try a little bit of everything. Each new wine our waitress poured came with a back story and I loved it. All of the wine we tried was great and I can't remember exactly what they were, but my favorites were the white wines, I know that. While they don't have food, we were welcome to bring food from outside so we grabbed a few pizzas from down the street to munch on while we were there. I'm not from the area, but I do visit every so often and I can totally see myself returning whenever that day comes.
