We visited Hatcher Winery last fall, and while I generally am pretty bad at leaving reviews, it seems that I shouldn't let being late stop me from adding our experience to the picture here. We had a great time - even me, and I was the designated driver. Sewell was perfectly entertaining and we had a great conversation about music, wine, and San Francisco. The old rough host was incredibly rude. I've loved Hatcher winery for years. Brought my girlfriends here (6 of us total) and the old man who was rough looking with tattoos was incredibly rude. We checked back twice for availability and the last time I asked when he would have availability, he literally told me "not ever." Completely caught off guard, I asked if he could split us up into two groups of three and he told me "nope". Keep in mind there were three open tables outside. I told him that's too bad and there was no need to be an asshole about it. But literally, so unexpected and so unnecessarily rude. Completely uncalled for. read more

I love the owners and I love all of the wines that I have tried. They age well and for a good long time. I am especially fond of Beckman Zin and the Reserve Zinfandels especially. The whites are good too I am told by the ones to whom I serve it. You will probably make them one of your favorite wineries as many of our friends have done! read more

Only leaving 2 stars because their wine is good, their service however, left a lot more to be desired. While Sarah, who handled my tasting was nice, the co-owner, Sewell was incredibly rude. I came to Hatcher with the intent to purchase bottles as I tried their wine at a restaurant in Angels Camp last night. I was looking forward to gifting a couple of bottles to our family hosting us in AC and to my parents house sitting for us down in Southern CA. When I entered the tasting room (with my husband and 5 year old daughter behind) we were greeted by Sewell's aggressive dog, barking and getting at my daughter. My husband and daughter just turned around and walked out. Sewell made a comment that the dog is nice if they greeted her but that was clearly not the case. I decided to do a quick tasting and make my bottle selections. During my tasting, another family with kids came in so I figured my family could return, when they did this dog aggressively approached my daughter and husband again. My family left again, as to not even bother with this nuisance of a dog to which Sewell said "why do they just keep coming and leaving?!" In a rude tone. How about you get control of YOUR ANIMAL? A place of business is not a place for an aggressive dog. If you claim to be kid friendly yet allow your dog, who is not friendly, in your establishment, then you are not kid friendly or even people friendly. A barking and aggressive dog is not something that contributes to a welcoming environment. I ended up purchasing 5 bottles because I was almost done with my tasting at that point, but I will never return. I had heard from family that the owners, Sewell in particular, were rude and unfriendly, I did not expect this type of treatment. I will not be returning to Hatcher as the other reviews left here were proven to be true with our experience. The fact that several reviews spanning a decade have fallen unto deaf ears shows that they don't care what a customer has to say and that customer service is not their strong suit whatsoever. read more

This was a cute wine tasting room, hidden in a back building on Main Street. The ambiance was much like what you'd find at a winery. It was a wine cellar with stones on the walls. Their wine flight was good. If you bought a bottle, the wine tasting fee was waived. They also had a cute dog that was kid friendly. We were in a rush, but the wine made it easy to drink and get through the flights, quickly. Definitely not the best wine I've had, but it wasn't bad. The ambiance of the tasting room made the experience special. read more

Rudest people EVER! First, the woman behind the counter stated "we close in 45 minutes" in an extremely rude manner and tone of voice. Before anyone could speak she placed glasses on the counter, began pouring while informing us the tasting is $20 in the same rude tone of voice. I'm still mad at myself for not turning around and walking out the door. I can't really rate the wine as I was so irritated it killed the entire experience. I did buy a bottle (mostly to avoid the $20 fee). I am hoping to enjoy the bottle without the negativity i experienced in their tasting room. There are so many great wineries in Murphy's with great, friendly people. Don't waste your time here, it's not worth the negativity. It's a shame because it is a cute location. Unfortunately it is a great example of how one extremely bad attitude can kill the entire experience. The reds were good, especially the dolcetto. Unfortunately the customer service was poor. I walked in expecting to buy a few bottles, but changed my mind halfway through the tasting. The staff didn't seem interested in my questions and seemed very arrogant, and kept asking us to scoot down to make room even though they didn't make room for our party when we got there. Enjoyed a nice, full tasting of wine here. This place is popular for a reason and it's the wine! We popped in 3 times before getting around the size able crowds lining up to try these fruits. Staff were friendly but overwhelmed. I would recommend more than two staff to accommodate the crowds on the weekend. It's a shame the owners brother 'sewell' had to ruin an otherwise lovely wine tasting trip for my mother and her friends. Upon entering this establishment my mother took a seat at the counter and was looking forward to getting a glass of wine. While helping herself to some bread that was available to patrons and waiting for someone to take her order at the bar Sewell promptly started screaming at her to get out, that she was drunk and being cut off. She hadn't even had one glass of wine yet! I wish I could say it ended there but as my mother was in shock trying to explain that she had just arrived and wanted to try some of their wines he continued to calling her vulgar names! These ladies are in their 60's and 70's! Absolutely unacceptable behavior and I can assure you we will no longer be supporting this business. read more

I try to visit this winery in Murphys with the Lady Scientist at least once a year. Hatcher never disappoints: their tasting flight has always surpassed the other wineries we've visited in Murphys in terms of its ability to motivate us to leave with bottles we love: the Barbera, Mourvedre and Dolcetto this year were really nice. The reds here are consistently solid and a value as priced. Every interaction we've had with the host here or heard of after referring others to the winery has been downright enjoyable and ends in an education and gratitude for having stopped in. If the Lady Scientist's Canadian parents and siblings can enjoy a visit to Hatcher, you can too, assuming you're not a feckless, arrogant hoser with a coterie of bachelors and/or bachelorettes who should probably have had the sense to book the room before arriving, eh? Ultimately, wine is something that results from farmers growing grapes and letting yeast turn them under controlled circumstances. Hatcher is really good at this. There are plenty of tasting rooms in Napa if a basement bar isn't your style, valet parking is expected or your tour bus needs a place to turn around. For the rest of us, there's Hatcher. read more

A most fun and enjoyable experience! Delicious wine which we have purchased and enjoyed from other retailers, so no surprises in that regard. We decided while in Murphys to put visiting Hatcher at the top of our list. So glad we did! Sewell is a host of a different nature. His wealth of information about his product and hilarious, dry sense of humor kept us in stitches the entire time. I will never condone any business that displays rudeness and the selfishness of coming to work while sick. The female that was pouring the wines over the weekend was clearly sick, however she took it upon herself to still come to work, pour wines, slice bread and serve it to the public while talking and hacking up everywhere and on everyone. Well fast forward a few days later, our entire party is now sick. Also note that this tasting room is in the basement level with inadequate ventilation which doesn't help the situation. We love their red wines! Visiting Murphy after a few years and always stop into Hatcher. They make quality wines, we always brag about them when we bring new friends. Sadly, we also have to warn them about not having the best customer service at this winery . We were hoping to be proved wrong on this trip, even would like to blame it on the heat, but this seems to be a consistent issue. I am from Livermore, where wine tasting is an art as well as a pleasure. To the point...our car club was in this area for the weekend. Three of us detoured from the group specifically to taste here. I have to say the wine was really good but our server was obnoxious. There were only two other people in the tasting room and he could not be bothered to answer any questions regarding the wines he poured...too busy with his friends at the other end. In fact, when we approached him with questions, he said it didn't matter what anyone actually thought of the wine, only if they liked it. After that he basically ignored us. My companions are both fine wine aficionados. They regularly buy wine by cases. This rude attitude was a real put off so we left only buying one case. I think he was called Sewell or something. If you go here and run into him just turn yourself right around and go taste somewhere else. He is a total jerk and obviously has no concern for promoting the wine he pours. read more

I went in for the first time and it was a busy day I asked the gentleman behind the counter if he can serve samples to a table on the far side of the room. Seemed like a simple question. He without even looking at me barked out No!!! My brother next to me was so embarrassed that he immediately walked out. I waited to confront him but decided it was a waste of time. A few girl friends and I went to hatcher tasting room. When we got there it was crowded so we went back to check it out. I have been there before and the wine is good but this time the customer service was horrible and I WONT be going back. The guy working there was very in pleasant. I believe he was the owners Matt's brother. He asked if all of us were interested in wine tasting?? Our response was delayed bc we were trying to find out how many white wines they had or if we could just buy a glass of wine. His response was " wow even snobs taste all the wines!!" Totally in appropriate and I was not amused buy his snotty attitude. Our one friend decided to taste. She took one sip and he asked her for her $5 tasting fee. All of the wines here are of excellent quality and they speak for themselves. People complaining about Mr. Hatcher being rude need to put their big boy/girl panties on and suck it up! Hatcher Winery tasting room is very quaint and the temperature feels very refreshing on a hot summer day. The down side was that it gets very crowded and they only had two people pouring wine so the customer service was very poor. After being recommended by several locals, we finally set out to find Hatcher. You have to keep your eyes open to find the small walkway on Main Street, but once you do, the red paw prints will lead you down to one of the most interesting tasting rooms in area. We were greeted at the door by Rasta, the tasting room dog and were enchanted by the cave-like setting with the 1850's rock foundation that makes up the walls. Sewell was pouring and treated us well, making sure to come back to us even as big groups came and went. We met a couple of locals (restaurant owners, etc.) that made the experience a memorable one...and that was in between the wine. The wine is quality- the wine maker knows what he is doing (evidenced by the other labels who bring their fruit to him to work his magic on). We were particularly fans of the 08 Grenache Rose ($16 dry, with gentle fruit aroma), the 07 Beckman Zin ($24ish (after tasting, my memory was little fuzzy on the price ;)- fantastic zin) and the 06 Port ($19- my unrefinded nose picked up vanilla and caramel and a whole lot of deliciousness!). read more

Wow. I am shocked this place has any bad reviews! Sure, I do not know a lot about wine but I know what I like and I LOVE Hatcher! Everything here is palatable. I don't generally care for whites or Zins and I happily drink both when I stop to taste at Hatcher. Sure, Sewell is a little tough at first but get warmed up to him and its well worth it. If you get the rare chance to meet Matt, the owner/winemaker its really a treat! I venture to Murphys often in order to give guest artists at my job a taste of the Gold Country and I have never left Hatcher's tasting room without purchasing at least one bottle. And my friends always purchase 1 or 2 as well! BOTTOM LINE: try/buy the Grenache Rose, the Sewell (named for their father), and of course, Quinn the Eskimo- a dessert wine. My friend served it at her wedding in lieu of champagne- excellent idea! read more

The two employees working there have never worked in the service industry, or at least that was not prevalent. Hatcher's wines are quite good. My personal favorite is the Viognier, which is also available at a wine bar in my town (Half Moon Bay Wine & Cheese). We've been in here a bunch of times and always had a nice experience. Knowledgeable and friendly people in the tasting room paired with good wines, what's not to like? The tasting room is actually physically located on Main Street across from Grounds Cafe -- the Yelp listing has them at French Gulch Road and if you go by that address, you won't find them. Excellent wines! We were introduced to Hatcher by our friends who are wine club members. For our first introduction to the winery, they brought us along to a dinner event where past vintages were available for sale--it was a great time! Since then, Chris and I have visited a handful of times, and we are always impressed! I am very surprised by the negative reviews related to customer service--I have always had a very pleasant experience at Hatcher. Depending on what you are liking, they will sometimes pour off the tasting list if they think you might enjoy something different. Plus, they are dog friendly (which is an automatic plus in my book!) Our favorites are the Tempranillo (we bought a few bottles of the 2002 which was amazing, but the other vintages are great too!), the Cab Franc, and the Zin. Of course, I am giving it a 5 star rating because, in my opinion, pretty much everything is great :-) Hmm...I think it's about time for a trip to Murphys... read more
