Hard to beat a great beachside lunch at one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island. This is a posh, well done beach restaurant. Our server was incredible and met our needs before we even asked. She actually brought me a bandaid and ointment for a cut she saw on my hand, all on her own. Really kind and thoughtful. Drinks were tasty and tasting the alcohol was a pleasant surprises! The wings were the best I'd had and wish I'd actually ordered them rather than sneak one off of my seat mates plate! I enjoyed the Nicoise salad with fresh seared Ono. Others had burgers and cob salads. All solid choices. This was an easy spot to return to several times on this trip. The view of the gorgeous beach and blue ocean made a great lunch kinda spectacular.

The Hau Tree is the only beach restaurant for this hotel and this little bay. We found that it had all the requisite amenities that you'd expect: themed outdoor bar (see bar pic), tables near the sand, great bay view, beach restrooms and a short walk from the hotel. I posted a pic of the menu - straight-forward and simple. The service at the bar was very quick, yet the table service was marginal. We started with the Club Sandwich. As you can see in my pic, there was generous amount of thick cut breast meat, as was the nice layer of bacon. I really liked the ratio of bread to meat and bacon. The turkey sandwich flavors were all there and it was a filling sandwich. The chips were only a salty tidbit to go with your favorite beverage. The Kona Kanpachi Nicoise was a nice medley of veggies and fish, see my pic. As you can see, everything was fresh. The fish was cooked just right. We had the mango vinaigrette on the side, which added the right amount of fruity, Hawaiian flavor to this classic salad.

This is the ultimate beach restaurant. The sand is right there. We went fir the sunset and it didn't disappoint. I had a caesar salad and a side of poke. It was great. A true caesar salad complete with anchovies. Poke was good but I needed some soy sauce on it. My husband had the poke bowl with a side of sashimi. The poke bowl included pickled cucumbers and seaweed salad. I took home his leftovers. The restaurant was about an hour from where we are staying. It was good but except for meeting with our friends there I don't know if it's an hour drive good.

Had dinner here to see the manta rays as we were not staying the night at this resort. The fish tacos were really good but everything else was mediocre and the catch of the day was bland and not worth the $45 price. Maybe just get a drink here if you want to see the manta rays or use the public beach access parking and hang around until dark to see them. This place was expensive and the service was terrible.

Food: Would have been better if it was seasoned well, boyfriend got a burger and it was nothing but blandness. ordered a short rib with adobo fried rice and I was served a what seems to be a kalua short rib?! I was served "chicken" at first and I was like, no I did not order chicken dish... I would not recommend getting your dinner here. To copper bar or meridia instead for dinners. Service: was great Ambiance: the overlooking beach will give the star rating for me. Amazing place just not the food.

It's Mauna Kea so you have know this is a splurge! Our meal was pricey, but lovely. You're eating lunch right on a beautiful beach. Service was quick and friendly. The fish tacos are delicious and filling! The Mai Tais are fabulous too.

Come for the view and be patient with the rest. Ambiance: 5+ stars Food: 3 stars Service: 2.5 stars The ambiance: Let me first start by saying that I've been here once before and both times I've been blown away by the view and cool vibes at sunset. Definitely allow time to explore the grounds before your reservation if you're not already staying at the Mauna Kea. The beachside tables allow lovely views during your meal. The food: It's all pretty good. Not great, but good. The chimichurri fries were yummy. The Kalua fries were good. We had multiple orders of fish tacos that were fine, but some didn't have avocado (this was corrected with ample sides of avocado coming out to make up for it). The tofu steak was fine, but boring, with kimchi apple slaw that was too heavy-handed with the acidity. The shrimp skewer was delicious. Burger...good. Chicken...good. Service: this holds a higher weighted value in my review since i think it's reasonable to expect excellent service at the Mauna Kea resort. The low score was not due to any bad attitude or any specific event. It was just generally lacking. Long wait (15-20 min) to be greeted at our table with no menus. We finally got 4 menus for 8 people, then the giant menus were left on the table until we asked that they be taken away (they literally moved the stack of menus to put food on the table but didn't consider taking the menus!). One drink not getting delivered (until I went to ask the bartender for it). Another long wait to give our food orders. 2 other drinks (beer and wine) were delivered very late when the bar slow and we were ready for the bill. Finally- this was a milestone birthday dinner. The restaurant was informed upon making a reservation and confirmed that they knew when we confirmed the day prior. But not a single word or effort was made to acknowledge the bday. Our server was actually very nice and funny. Probably just overwhelmed as all service providers tend to be now, but a disappointment nonetheless.

Great beach side eatery at Mauna Kea. We enjoyed the food and the sunset, our waiter was professional and timely. We have often eaten at the Hau Tree in Waikiki and this place is more casual. Dinner reservations are needed.

Their desserts are not that good here, but their chimmichurri fries were good. The food overall is 3 stars but the environment and mood is amazing because you are right next to the beach sand with an amazing view of the ocean. It's ideal to come here at sunset! The service was good. The first dessert we got that was more tropical wasn't good and thankfully the server brought us something else.

Ask the Community - Hau Tree At Mauna Kea

Is the Weekend clambake buffet still available?

    Only for seniors

Curious, if dining at Hau Tree( as a non guest of Manua Kea Resort , using their valet parking ) can you then access the beach after dinner - ie for an evening stroll? Are there time limits for the valet parking?

Yes of course. The beach would be a lovely post-dinner stroll! Hau Tree dinner concludes by 8:30pm so valet parking expectation would be by approximately 9:00pm. Mahalo.

The Absolute Best Meal on the Island--A Masterclass in Food & Service!…read moreIf I could give Seafood Bar & Grill 10 stars, I would. This wasn't just a dinner; it was our absolute favorite meal of the entire trip. We didn't even have a special occasion to celebrate--we just had a phenomenal experience here in the past and couldn't wait to return. They somehow managed to exceed every expectation. From the second we walked in, we were blown away. We loved the Tiki Bar, everyone is family when you walk in, history covering the walls ambiafamily-friendly; ev Seafood We were greeted by Dave Yurtin, the owner, who set up a fabulous table for us inside. But here is the kicker: Dave actually remembered us from our first visit two years ago! Talk about a total legend. We couldn't believe his memory--that is next-level hospitality. Our server, Ryan, provided spectacular, world-class service. He didn't write a single part of our big order down and got absolutely everything 100% right. He was attentive, fast, and incredibly sharp--he even remembered at the end that my mother-in-law had asked for onion rings once she was finished, before changing her mind. Incredible! Now, let's talk about the food and drinks because WOW. We started with the drinks, and these were hands-down the absolute best Mai Tais we have had on the island. Every single dish that hit the table was a home run: - Escargot: Wow, wow, wow, wow! Absolutely phenomenal. The pesto and cheese with the garlic bread? Unreal. - Seafood Quesadilla & Coconut Shrimp: Perfectly executed and delicious. - Braised Short Ribs: Out of this world. Fall-off-the-bone tender. - Pineapple Macnut Slaw: Insane flavor. Do not skip this! - Garlic Bread: Spectacular and perfect for soaking up every last bit of flavor. - Fish Linguine: A rich, perfectly balanced cream sauce packed with different types of fresh fish. Somehow, we saved room for dessert and tried FOUR different ones: the Key Lime Pie was unbelievable, the Lilikoi Pie and Kona Coffee Pie were spectacular, and the NY Cheesecake with Lilikoi Sauce was the perfect grand finale. Between Dave's legendary memory, Ryan's flawless service, and a kitchen that doesn't miss, Seafood Bar & Grill is an absolute must-visit. We will be talking about this meal until our next visit! Cipriano's Kitchen - Kawaihae's Italian Treasure…read more Cipriano's Kitchen is one of those rare restaurants that keeps you thinking about your meal long after you've left. Chef Gino is generous with both his talent and his portions. Every dish showcases fresh ingredients, expert preparation, and a genuine love of Italian cooking. The menu is seafood-forward, featuring fresh local catches, handmade pasta, and flavors that are both authentic and creative. This family-run restaurant is made even more special by Claudia, Chef Gino's wife and culinary partner. Claudia bakes fresh focaccia daily and prepares the restaurant's gnocchi and pasta from scratch. As hostess, she warmly welcomes every guest and effortlessly serves as the restaurant's "walking menu," describing each dish with passion and detail. The presentation is stunning. Lobster, octopus, shrimp, clams, scallops, and house-made pasta arrive beautifully plated and bursting with flavor. The fresh focaccia alone is worth the visit. Every meal feels thoughtfully prepared, from the first bite to the last. What keeps me coming back is that the food is genuinely craveable. I find myself dining here every couple of weeks for lunch, and more often than not, I leave with a takeout order for dinner because I know I'll be thinking about it later. Cipriano's Kitchen isn't just serving Italian food--it's creating an experience centered around family, hospitality, and exceptional cooking. Kawaihae is fortunate to have this gem, and anyone who appreciates fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and heartfelt hospitality should make it a destination. A true Big Island favorite. "Come hungry. Leave happy. Plan your next visit before you've even finished your meal."

We planned this evening well in advance, making reservations over a month ago and explicitly noting the milestone celebration. My husband even called ahead of time to confirm, and the staff assured us they would do something special for them. The letdown began right at arrival. The hostess was passive and asked our table, "Who is celebrating their anniversary?" Given that our party consisted of two couples under 40 and my in-laws, it felt incredibly unobservant and careless for a luxury resort host team. Later in the meal, my husband quietly asked our server if anything special was planned for the occasion, only to be told, "No, we don't do that." Beyond a casual, passing verbal acknowledgment, absolutely nothing was done. The only true highlight of the evening was the beautiful view. Our server was friendly, though a bit awkward, but the kitchen and bar execution were highly disappointing: * **The Drinks:** Highly overpriced for the size, lacking in flavor, and tasted noticeably watered down. * **The Pacing:** While thankfully, we were in no rush, it took a tremendous amount of time to receive our appetizers and salads, though the entrees did arrive quickly after. * **The Food:** Every dish was exceptionally expensive, yet the portion sizes were minuscule and entirely flavorless. The Caesar salad, in particular, had a very strange, off-putting flavor profile. * **Dessert:** We ordered the $17 cheesecake, which was absolutely tiny. For a premium dining experience on the coast at a luxury resort, you expect a balance of ambiance, culinary excellence, and attentive service. While Manta has the ambiance down, the food and hospitality were entirely lacking. We left the restaurant hungry, deeply disappointed, and feeling that our family's major milestone deserved a much higher level of care than what we received.
