Hard to beat a great beachside lunch at one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island. This is a posh, well done beach restaurant. Our server was incredible and met our needs before we even asked. She actually brought me a bandaid and ointment for a cut she saw on my hand, all on her own. Really kind and thoughtful. Drinks were tasty and tasting the alcohol was a pleasant surprises! The wings were the best I'd had and wish I'd actually ordered them rather than sneak one off of my seat mates plate! I enjoyed the Nicoise salad with fresh seared Ono. Others had burgers and cob salads. All solid choices. This was an easy spot to return to several times on this trip. The view of the gorgeous beach and blue ocean made a great lunch kinda spectacular. read more

The Hau Tree is the only beach restaurant for this hotel and this little bay. We found that it had all the requisite amenities that you'd expect: themed outdoor bar (see bar pic), tables near the sand, great bay view, beach restrooms and a short walk from the hotel. I posted a pic of the menu - straight-forward and simple. The service at the bar was very quick, yet the table service was marginal. We started with the Club Sandwich. As you can see in my pic, there was generous amount of thick cut breast meat, as was the nice layer of bacon. I really liked the ratio of bread to meat and bacon. The turkey sandwich flavors were all there and it was a filling sandwich. The chips were only a salty tidbit to go with your favorite beverage. The Kona Kanpachi Nicoise was a nice medley of veggies and fish, see my pic. As you can see, everything was fresh. The fish was cooked just right. We had the mango vinaigrette on the side, which added the right amount of fruity, Hawaiian flavor to this classic salad. read more

This is the ultimate beach restaurant. The sand is right there. We went fir the sunset and it didn't disappoint. I had a caesar salad and a side of poke. It was great. A true caesar salad complete with anchovies. Poke was good but I needed some soy sauce on it. My husband had the poke bowl with a side of sashimi. The poke bowl included pickled cucumbers and seaweed salad. I took home his leftovers. The restaurant was about an hour from where we are staying. It was good but except for meeting with our friends there I don't know if it's an hour drive good. read more

Decent food at resort prices. We had the nachos, poke bowl, mahi mahi catch of the day sandwich, cheeseburger, and brussels sprouts during our multiple visits here. It is the most convenient option if you are planning to spend the day at Mauna Kea. The drinks here are just okay, but they are very pricey. Cocktails on the menu start at $18. The ones that had the puree in them were very sweet, and all you could taste was the syrup in them. In the heat, these drinks melted within 8 minutes. Luckily, that's about as long as it really takes to finish one of these dessert-like drinks. The service here was great -- everyone working here was friendly, and they worked well with their teammates. It was a well-oiled machine type of operation here. My friend ordered takeout one day, and even that was ready within 15 minutes. My two complaints about this restaurant were the small flying bugs that seemed to follow the dishes from the kitchen once they were brought out, every time we ate here, and then the smell in the tiki hut area - I noticed it in the bar area of the Meridia as well, and maybe it can't be helped in the humidity..but it smelled like they could use some deep cleaning. read more

This place was our go-to lunch spot while staying at the Mauna Kea resort. The proximity to our beach chairs and water made it an idyllic vacation lunch spot. Even though the servers have a lot of tables and are always hustling, I thought the service was still good. They were also very nice and always helpful trying to find a good spot out of the sun. In my opinion, I thought the food was actually quite good. Very simple, club sandwiches, fries, salads, etc, but the quality was high and the portions were fine. The catch of the day sandwich was hard to pass up, and was definitely one of my favorite orders the 4-5 times we were here. Would definitely recommend for lunch. read more

Just tell the gate you came for pūpūs at Hau Tree, park in the public beach lot in the right (you'll see beach parking stamped spots) and make the winding trek along the path to the beach. The drinks were so good and the sunset was heavenly! Such beautiful views! Our servers were welcoming, kind, patient and joyful! It was definitely worth the experience to sit in paradise for our last night on the Big Island. We drank them and asked for the next round to be stronger, like they normally are. The bartender replied, "Oh, so you want a double?" I explained that I've had them before, and they weren't this watered down--just make them as they usually taste. Instead, he charged me double, $58 for two drinks. This isn't good service If you're charging premium prices, the cocktails / service should reflect that. read more

The food: It's all pretty good. Not great, but good. The chimichurri fries were yummy. The Kalua fries were good. We had multiple orders of fish tacos that were fine, but some didn't have avocado (this was corrected with ample sides of avocado coming out to make up for it). The tofu steak was fine, but boring, with kimchi apple slaw that was too heavy-handed with the acidity. The shrimp skewer was delicious. Burger...good. Chicken...good. Service: this holds a higher weighted value in my review since i think it's reasonable to expect excellent service at the Mauna Kea resort. The low score was not due to any bad attitude or any specific event. It was just generally lacking. Long wait (15-20 min) to be greeted at our table with no menus. We finally got 4 menus for 8 people, then the giant menus were left on the table until we asked that they be taken away (they literally moved the stack of menus to put food on the table but didn't consider taking the menus!). One drink not getting delivered (until I went to ask the bartender for it). Another long wait to give our food orders. 2 other drinks (beer and wine) were delivered very late when the bar slow and we were ready for the bill. Finally- this was a milestone birthday dinner. The restaurant was informed upon making a reservation and confirmed that they knew when we confirmed the day prior. But not a single word or effort was made to acknowledge the bday. Our server was actually very nice and funny. Probably just overwhelmed as all service providers tend to be now, but a disappointment nonetheless. read more

My wife and I went to visited here during an excursion and were blown away by the service we received. Our waitress was phenomenal, and the food came out quickly. I had a strawberry margarita and the burger with jalapeño sauce. My wife had the catch of the day. Both of our plates were delicious! The views were great, and the resort ambiance was impressive. Came here for snacks after doing a short walk from Westin Hapuna. We had the Ovaltine Froth - vanilla ice cream with Ovaltine powder. Pretty good if you are into chocolate malt shakes. Honey toast was just alright - lots of brioche bread with honey and some Ice cream on top. We had the S'mores dessert too, which is like a deconstructed s'mores. Hau Tree -- at a resort that people are paying lots of money to stay at you would think that the food available on the premises would meet the expensive cost of staying. For what you pay for at this restaurant it is unfortunate what you receive. To start my table ordered the Kalua Fries, they were good and came out fast. You can't really go wrong with French fries. My partner ordered the Federico and I ordered the Lilikoi Tea both drinks were delicious. Here is where my disappointment lies. For our entrees we order the Daily Catch which was Marlin paired with garlic mash and green beans served with a side of aioli. As well as the Peruvian Fish Tacos. We figured that being on the beach would mean this place would hopefully have good seafood. Dry. Realllllly dry. Unfortunately for an almost $40 plate the marlin was incredibly dry. The green beans were fresh and the potatoes were good but once again how can you mess potatoes up? The Peruvian Fish Tacos were also extremely dry and I'd say more blacked then they should've been. I ordered the blackened fresh catch fish tacos and it needed a lot of flavor. I would not order it again. The pineapple pico de gallo was yummy but the fish itself had no flavor at all. The tortilla ripped so quickly and the taco fell apart. I ordered chips with it but they gave me coleslaw. I didn't want to tell them anything so I just ate it. I had a beautiful first meal on April 19th on the Big Island at this beautiful restaurant on the beach. Wolfie was my waitress and she was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu and the resort. Billy at the front gate of the community was very helpful also since I was not a guest but a traveler staying in the area. I had to make a reservation to get into the Resort and he was very patient and helped me out immediately to get a table. I was then able to enter and enjoy the property. I highly recommend walking through this lovely resort, eating on the beach as I did, and then walking the beach. Truly a great representation of the Big Island. read more

Right on the beach ! Try it to get a taste of Mauna Kea if you are not staying at the hotel. Much cheaper than their other restaurant overlooking the beach ("Mantha"), you can have a nice dinner for a "reasonnable" price (considering: location, Hawaii, on the beach, high-end hotel ... of course) if you dine light. Desserts for the kids were awesome. Sunset is great -- book for 6.30pm And each time we dined there ... we saw Mantha Rays after sunset. We had good service and the setting was a causal beach restaurant at a hotel. The food was not good. I ordered one of their salads and it presented similar to a salad on an airplane- wet lettuce, too much dressing, and all the veggies inside seemed to be from a can. I know this sounds harsh- but it was really that bad. My husband got the fresh catch of the day and it was dry, had little flavor and after the first bite he was not interested in more. Our server felt horrible and we did not make too big of a stink- we were on vacation and it did not seem worth it.
