TLDR: Lounge area near the "lobby" of the Fairmont Orchid resort. Since it overlooks the rest of the resort, it's the perfect place to rest and relax during the day. They start serving Japanese-inspired foods starting 5 pm and they have nightly live music starting around 6 pm. Food was fine, nothing special, but the ambiance was wonderful and the nightly torch lighting + conch shell blowing at sunset happens on this balcony. ------ FOOD: * Smash Burger (4/5): Came with two patties and a slight skirt on the meat. Was a little simple though (i.e. no lettuce or tomatoes, though did come with one deep-fried onion ring and cheese). Fries were pretty good! * Luana Roll (4/5): This is their signature roll and I thought it was good but wasn't anything special. Probably not worth $30. * Double Crunch Roll (4/5): Again, good roll but nothing special and didn't particularly love it. ------ SERVICE: * Fine service, though the waiter took a long time to check in on our table. We weren't in a rush so it wasn't a problem, but it was strange. * Note that their kitchen is not located nearby and so the waiter has to go to a kitchen downstairs before bringing the food up. That means that service can be a little slower at times. ------ ENVIRONMENT / AMBIANCE: * Really nice ambiance. It's a balcony right off the main lobby where you check-in, and there are lots of comfy lounge chairs and small tables to match. The lobby and the lounge are both technically on the 3rd floor of the resort, so you can overlook the rest of the resort including the pool, beach, and ocean. * The live music at night is nice, both if you're dining at the lounge or just returning to the lobby area after a long day out. * There's also an indoor bar area next-door to the lounge with a pool table. The pool accessories are in rough shape (only 1 usable pool stick) but anyone is able to set up the table and begin playing. Despite being here during the holidays, this table was surprisingly available for most of our stay. * Every night there's a traditional Hawaiian ceremony where torches are lit at sunset and someone blows a conch in all directions. The conch blowing happens on this balcony, so if you're seated at the lounge around 5 pm, you'll have great seats of the short ceremony. read more

The lounge is conveniently towards the center of the resort, close to check in. The staff are difficult to get ahold of, and service was rather lackluster. We came on a windier day, and the tiki torch kept getting blown out. The one closest to us was gushing out gas without a flame, and left an extremely heavy gas smell. We asked if they could relight it, and the first person said they'd get maintenance over right away. 20 minutes later, and getting lightheaded from the gas, I asked if they could turn it off if they couldn't relight it. The staff started getting defensive which I didn't understand, and told us that we were being unreasonable since the area wouldn't be lit up if there was no torch. I kept explaining to her that the torch was out, so we don't get the light anyways, but she wasn't listening to our concerns. Eventually another staff member came by, immediately understood, and finally turned off the gas for us so we weren't getting smothered by the odor. We ordered two cocktails and a spicy Kanpachi roll. The cocktails were mediocre, and one of them was not what we ordered. My wife asked for a blended cocktail and ended up with a drink on ice. The kanpachi roll was below average, with soggy seaweed and loosely rolled where it was falling apart while eating. I would skip on this lounge if you're looking for a place to eat and maybe even for skip and go elsewhere for drinks. We only tried one sushi roll, but after our experience we didn't intend on ordering anything else. read more

We were struggling on choosing an option for dinner in the area, and decided to try some sushi. I love sushi as its my favorite food and Luana didn't disappoint, and if anything is one of my favorite sushi rolls I've had in recent years. The atmosphere is great with a nice view of the Fairmont's ground/ocean. The food: We got the following rolls - Rainbow roll This was a fresh tasting roll that really highlighted how great the fish was even without soy sauce. - Volcano roll My personal favorite as it wasn't too spicy, but certainly had a kick. It combined a lot of different flavors that combined into making it a truly memorable roll for me. - Tempura Shrimp roll Im a huge crunchy shrimp roll fan, and this is the best I've had yet. They roll was huge and was everything you'd want with a crunchy shrimp roll in terms of taste/freshness. Overall, with the view and the quality I'd say its worth a visit even with the steep prices in my opinion. Might go back before we leave the resort! read more

Had dinner here while staying on the property. Ordered Chirasi Don and Kanpachi & crab roll. They were both fresh and delicious. I did not expect great food at a hotel lounge but chirasi, especially, was beyond our expectations. Poke and ikura added great flavor, sushi rice was seasoned just right, and sashimi pieces were large and fresh. Prices were very fair and reasonable as well. I would highly recommend the chirasi don. Sunrise Mai Tai (zero proof) however was overly sweet and quite awful. Service was friendly, albeit a bit slow. Nice views of the ocean and the pool. read more

Literally writing this review as I sit in the patio. Been here for at least 30 mins. Only service has been a couple of waters dropped off. Server has walked by several times and literally avoids eye contact. All we wanted was a couple of drinks to cap off the evening. Literally had to track him down in middle of lounge and ask if we could order a couple of drinks, and that seemed like a lot to ask. Bartender seems overwhelmed with drink orders, so obviously a staffing issue. Server finally stopped by and refilled our waters. We asked again if we could order a couple of drinks, and he literally looked spent. Felt sorry for the kid. If you can't service your guests ordering $25 cocktails, then don't be open. read more

Amazing terrace style lounge at the Fairmont Orchid resort. The staff were amazing and attentive. The sushi menu looked really tasty. The drinks were delicious and there are supposed to be seasonal special drinks starting the week before Christmas. Alitalia (outlet manager) is stellar! She stopped by our table and bar seats several times to ask how we were, see what she could do to make our visit even better, offered suggestions for drinks and food, and was not afraid to help out her staff with drinks or orders. Our first night at the Fairmont on Hawaii (Big Island) and the receptionist told us about the Luana Lounge just off the lobby, so we thought we'd try it as it was nearing sunset. The view was great, and the music and the conch shell presentation was nice, but the food was way overpriced for what we got. My son ordered the lobster sushi (it may have been the "special"), and there were 6 VERY THIN slices for over $50. The drinks were satisfactory. read more

Good sushi but the service was quite slow. Took them about an hour to bring out our rolls. They comped our edamame but I was still a bit annoyed. To be fair, it was July 3rd. Perhaps Luana Lounge has changed its menu since the previous reviews. It exclusively serves sushi now. And that sushi is fantastic. It offers about 10 different rolls and market sashimi. We got one of everything. The rolls are both creative and tasty. The Salmon Belly roll was my favorite. The sushi chef also made us a roll that was not on the menu called Red Dragon, and it was extremely good. Our server, Koa, was very friendly and a font of local knowledge. This is a resort lounge, so if you're looking to chill, have an amazing view, and eat great sushi, go here. If you're in a hurry and impatient, go elsewhere. read more

We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for a conference and were fortunate enough to be in Hawaii for work but also to meet Marianne at the Luana Lounge. She's wonderful and warms your heart and is the example of the aloha spirit that welcomes you in Hawaii. Dylan, the bartender, makes amazing drinks. Got a pizza for dinner when I didn't feel like driving a half hour to get to a decent restaurant. Seating could be hard to come by since it's pretty much a free for all, but I was able to get something without any problems. Service was quick, and they gave me free pub snacks (like the one from Costco)...two servings in fact! The pizza was huge. Probably something between a small and a medium at a regular pizza parlor. Definitely big enough for two people unless you eat a lot. Although the pizza was on the pricey side, it was reasonable considering it's a resort in Hawaii. Spectacular location, breathtaking sunset view, however, food selection is very poor and service is extremely slow and horrible. Although the bar was not too busy, it took about 10 minutes until we got acknowledged and an additional 15 minutes to receive 2 drinks. Sadly, no nuts came with our drinks. We appriciate the Hawaiian layed back atitude, but expect a faster and better service. Had a higher expectation and it was a BIG disapointment. This was the second year in a row that we reserved the Knoll at Browns Beach House and THE LAST! After personally spending over $1,000 toward a Christmas Party, a few of us went over to the Luana Lounge for a couple of after-dinner drinks. We were the only locals in the lounge, and after being skipped over by the cocktail waitress, I went to the bar to order our little group a round of drinks. While sitting right at the bar, waiting patiently, with the bartender looking directly at me, he proceeded to serve others who arrived after me. After being skipped over a few times, I was forced to ask for service, and that's when the rude bartender finally acknowledged our presence and made our drinks. We were forced to put up with terrible service the entire evening, which is very unfortunate because the employees at Luana Lounge used to be wonderful! Not sure what happened, but serious quality control is in order. read more
