We met the guide at the Visitors Center, and watched a video/PowerPoint presentation for about a half an hour, to learn background about the history of the Academy, and the life of Charles Zimmerman, the composer of the well known anthem (written for the class of 1907). Then we did a walking tour of the Academy, with some stops being those of a typical tour and others focused on the musical history of the place. We saw the noon formation of the plebes, saw the obelisk they climb to become upperclassmen, & learned about some other musical connections to the USNA, including Frances Scott Key and the Zimmerman bandstand. At the end, there was a woodwind trio concert in the amazing chapel, which is worth a tour all by itself. Our guide was great and it was really a nice activity.

Historic stops included: St. Anne's Parish, Maryland State House, Shiplap House, Maryland State Capitol Building, and some other random street corners where the tour guide pointed out some notable buildings/historic sites. We stood outside while Sam discussed some interesting history and culture of the town and each attraction. The tour guide discussed and recommended other establishments around the area (she pointed them out along the route) that were not on the tour, including places to eat, drink, and buy souvenirs. I really appreciated that aspect of the tour. See the pictures for the food stops and menu. The food was really great, with the exception of the tacos. The cream of crab soup at the Federal House was FANTASTIC. This was a pretty incredible way to experience and learn about Annapolis, and just a great afternoon outing. I highly recommend it.

We were able to see sites on narrow historic streets; UA has 6-seat electric golf cart type vehicles. Other tour busses and trolleys simply can't maneuver those parts of the city! Mike was personable, friendly and knew so much! I have a masters in history and I was fully impressed with his wealth of knowledge and interesting anecdotes. You can either check out the visitor center and free museum (a few blocks away) and walk around on your own (after going through security - this is an active naval base so ID is required to enter), or opt for a public guided tour, if you wish learn more about the history, traditions, and campus life of this institution. The 90-minute historical walking tour is the most popular, but I booked a GEM riding tour for my family (in a 5-passenger electric vehicle), since we were traveling with elders and a young child, so wouldn't be able to cover much ground across the sprawling Yard otherwise. The 75-minute tour takes you all around the Yard in comfort and highlights the "gems" of the naval academy. The campus is beautiful and pristinely maintained, and we were expertly entertained and informed by our wonderful tour guide Anne, whose whole family is Navy, and shared additional insights into the life of a midshipman and beyond. Parking: the limited parking near the visitors center is only available to those who hold a military ID. Otherwise you can either park at a garage or try metered street parking which is limited to 2 hours.

I wish we'd had time for a guided tour (the other reviewers have really sold me on that experience, and I look forward to doing it in the future), but we had a great time exploring on our own. We arrived in the late afternoon. When you arrive, you need to enter through the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center (even if you're going to the chapel or the museum, navigate your walking directions here to avoid wasting time - Google Maps doesn't know you need to enter at this particular gate), where you'll show ID and put your things through a metal detector, but that was very quick. The highlights of our walk around campus included the walk down Porter Road (the houses on this street looked like I was on the set of Top Gun), the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, and the Naval Academy Chapel. Both the museum and the chapel were easy to find, because the campus has very good signage. The museum is located in Preble Hall and is two floors of naval and U.S. Navy history and a collection of model warships. It's definitely worth a visit (it has its own Yelp page, so you can read reviews specific to the museum there). The chapel really blew me away. It was built in 1904-1908 but underwent extension remodeling in 1940. It's large (it seats 2,500), with a copper dome (the cupola is 193 feet above the main altar area). It's very beautiful, and you should definitely stop in for a look if you're exploring campus. The campus is beautiful and a unique space in Annapolis. I'd been to Annapolis dozens of times (mostly for work before) visiting the Naval Academy! I wish I'd explored it sooner.

We visited 4 restaurants and two shops along our walking tour. (Note: where comfortable shoes - doesn't need to be sneakers, but should be comfy) When two people in our group were unable to make it, Bill was great and said they could just reschedule without any penalty. The restaurants they chose were delicious and hospitable. Each food item was accompanied by a small pour of wine, cocktail, or beer. Additionally, each food item was not only delicious, but presented by someone (most of the time, the chef) who really knew their food and was willing to answer our questions, including how to mimic the preparation at home. I truly want to come take cooking classes with many of these chefs. Rarely, am I able to get the answer of why something I was making wasn't working, but the chefs of the restaurants Bill takes you to are willing to help you out! Everyone associated with the tour truly presented to me as genuine people who love their town. The bits of history about Easton as we walked also helped to enhance our tour. This walking tour is must do when spending time in Easton. They did an amazing job of selling their town and making me want to return, possibly to even take this tour again.

I went early but, by the time I left the first embassy I visited, just about all the lines were extremely long. You'll spend a lot of time waiting in line. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes! Also, if you drive in like I did, parking will be challenging and you'll have to be able to parallel park in some very tight spaces. There were no bathrooms on Embassy Row or at the embassies I went to either. Over 60 embassies participated this year, and I chose the Embassies of Bangladesh, Chile, Belize, and South Korea. Great food, music, fashion, and entertainment. Grab a map from one of the volunteers to easily navigate your way around. This will save time. I'll be back next year!

Around the World Embassy Tour is not for the spectators. You have to work hard for it. Because…read morehuge volume of people attend it, food is usually gone in the first 2 hours and is replaced with the long lines of people waiting, I make a serious plan before every venture. I map out the embassies and decide which area to approach. I focus only on 3 or 4 nearby embassies and I call it quit after that. Big part of that approach is that I always have a child so I am trying to do the best in the shortest time. One year I focused on Van Dorn region, another year on Dupont Circle West and next year on Dupont Circle East,... I have been doing it for years and I always make sure that I take care of the parking early and be in line by 9:45 (before they open the first door). You will do yourself a favor if you do not expect a lot. You will see a gorgeous building (architecture) and beautiful interiors (art) and hear music from your host country and drink and eat their food. Everybody will be nice to you and answer your questions. You will not see the Riverdance in the Irish embassy or try Khat in Yemeni embassy, let us be realistic. My highlights from years of visiting the embassies are: Eating a caterpillar in the embassy of Botswana that was offered as a part of the meal (see picture). My son said to me - Dad, I have to draw a line in the sand somewhere and this is where I am drawing it. I am not eating a caterpillar. Seeing amazing building where Indonesian embassy is. Most fun was Trinidad and Tobago - steel drums blasting music, no limits on alcohol punch served (even to my 14 year old son at that time), pretty women in very modest (Square Footage of clothes wise) festival garbs passing by and enticing everybody to dance. You can wear an Arabian Sheikh clothes in the Saudi Arabian embassy while eating lamb they generously offer. I can talk a lot more but I will have my pictures talk for me.
