Apparently, this is the second annual festival here in downtown Carrollton. It was November 5, 2011 from 11am-11pm. I imagine that next year it'll be around the same time. The name "Festival at the Switchyard" comes from switchyard/railway tribute as there are 3-4 rail lines (including the shiny new DART rail) in the immediate area. It was actually a really cool festival! There were some vendor booths set up for various things (apparel, knick-nacks, etc) including FOOD. The real Fletcher's Corny Dogs had a booth there. Yes, the famous corny dogs from the State Fair were available here. They also had funnel cakes. Another booth had fresh spun cotton candy (with no crazy colorings added, just sugar), the one next to that had fresh squeezed lemonade. Agave Azul (best Mexican place ever) had a booth, right outside their restaurant, selling beef fajitas. There was beer/wine available from a couple of booths... PLUS all of the shops on the square were open. Many of these places being restaurants, which serve booze. I don't know if Agave let people take margaritas outside, but you could always ask! In addition to all of this, they had tons of bands/acts going on all day. Some were in the small gazebo in the square and some were on a big ass stage right next to Agave. The headliner was Third Eye Blind (Hello, 90's flashback!) and they stuck right to their schedule and went on stage at 930pm. They put on a really good show, and it was nice to see them back in town so soon following Taste Addison. If you get the chance to see these guys live and dig the 90's nostalgia of jamming to their hits, then I recommend it. We got there late, because we mostly wanted to see 3eB. But it was still a lot of fun. And most importantly, FREE. Parking is free (though incredibly limited) at the DART station nearby, at various spots surrounding the square, and some people even parked under the 35 overpass. No tickets to buy (like the State Fair) for food, but make sure you've got cash. They did have ATMs available right on Broadway st, but the transaction fee was almost $4 (plus, whatever your bank is going to charge you).. I learned my lesson and will next time just bring cash with me. The biggest problem we encountered was that by the time the headlining band went on, a lot of booths were already completely shut/packing up (out of product), and other booths were out of popular items (out of funnel cakes at 9pm??) and certain kinds of beer. Overall, this was really fun. I'm super glad it was free, but if there were a small entry fee next year (and I mean small- not the way the Wildflower Festival has started gouging people the past 10 years), I'd be happy to support the city where I live by buying a ticket. I highly recommend that people carpool, check the schedule for bands/events/kids things, and plan accordingly. The square is really quite small and I can imagine that it was quite crowded for a lot of the day. Looking at the website, I see that Yelp had a booth there, but I sure missed it! :( Maybe they were shut down by the time I got there (or, quite possibly, I'm blind). I hope this comes back for another year next year!

For example face painting,which was beautiful by the way, had at least 40 kids in live. We didn't partake in anything like that which included all of the rides and bouncy items... Not all 40 per line but long lines none the less. In any event the crafts and games were a hit with my kids and I was happy to hear other music such as pop like music that the kids enjoy. There's so much to see, and I spent about two hours walking around, taking pictures, and discovering all the little details. It's definitely one of those places where you'll want to take your time because there's always something new to look at. One tip: wear comfortable clothing or athletic gear! There is quite a bit of bending, climbing, and moving around as you explore, so you'll want to be dressed for it. They also have a cute gift shop, mocktail bar, and café, so you can grab a drink or bite before or after exploring. If you're in the Grapevine area or visiting Grapevine Mills, definitely add Meow Wolf to your list! It's fun, unique, super photogenic, and a great experience whether you're going with friends or exploring on your own.

There are doors that lead to mysterious passageways, all kinds of colorful artwork, and interesting Alice in Wonderland style settings. Parking was easy. I thought the price was reasonable, given the fact that it provided about two hours of entertainment. My two complaints are that I would've preferred they not dabble in politics and I also found the story hard to follow. You are supposed to solve this mystery, and I was not able to make heads or tails of it. Perhaps that would've been easier with the app.

The weather was cool and comfortable Friday night for walking around downtown Plano and checking out the numerous vendors. Since this event takes place in the spring the weather can be somewhat unpredictable, but it was lovely the evening we went. The main street in downtown Plano is closed for pedestrian traffic only. vendors line the center of the street. Stores and restaurants are open late too trying to take advantage of the increased foot traffic. Parking was free in nearby surface lots. If you get there early enough, you might find street parking. In addition to the main street, there is also a kid zone and a food truck area setup in a street lot. More artists and vendors can be found as you wander around Haggard Park. Let's talk about the art: -Artistic - real photographers, painters and crafts people had their wares on display. I enjoyed the dog silhouettes out of license plates, the lights made from car hub caps, chains and metal bits, and the digital light show put on by UT Dallas students at a warehouse on the main strip. -Unusual - artists spray painting large banners of what appeared to be plastic saran wrap strung between trees. The local maker space advertising some of the cool things that can be done at there 24-hour facility. One guy was making leather jewelry and giving it away to those who stopped by to chat. -Educational - attendees were invited to pick colored caps from a bucket and arrange them into a canvas with sectioned off walls to define the piece. It was visually interesting and educational as it was encouraging the reuse of plastic. Interactive - Invite your dog to have its paws dipped in paint and then run across a white festival shirt as your keepsake. -Dangerous - There was a blacksmith on site welding and shaping iron pieces. There was also a wood worker who was carving his sculptures with a chainsaw. The Usual - face painting, henna hand designs, jewelry vendors, the latest health massage technique hocus-pocus vendors, and size-zero, tie-died, flour sac type dresses, scarves, and bags for the rare young person with the money to buy it and body type that can wear it. This was a fun, free event for an evening out. It went on all weekend, so you could pick the day that worked best for you and your family. My hubby and I made it our Friday date night, and it was a success.

James our instructor was also very passionate and easy going which made the event much more enjoyable. Everything went well, thanks to their accommodations, and also pretty happy with my outcome lol. He said it was because we were only a party of three, and he had a full house with the larger groups having priority for being placed in the front. Our seats were assigned at the very end in the back. We could still see from the back, but we had to get up a few times and walk over to the front to get a better look at the details of his painting. Overall, it was a fun experience. We made the best of it being together and enjoyed our delicious charcuterie style BYO snacks and beverages. There was a good set of 90s music playing in the background, lots of laughter and good vibes from the other attending groups, and the assistant was super attentive to our needs. It is suggested to bring clothes that you don't mind if paint gets on them. Also, some paint techniques require you to use your fingers to flick paint onto the canvas. I have rlly personal exp w/ this place so this is gna b long…read more I was practically raised in this building. My first show here was at age 11, my last at 19. In that time I'd been in so many productions I have actually lost count. If this was a real workplace it would break numerous labor laws. To start acting here you NEED to come in with little self-respect and leave with none. Actors are expected to volunteer their money, clothes, pets, children and any sign of second thought is looked on as selfishness. There are contracts for the volunteer work here which do not exist for the protection of the laborer. I'm pretty sure they're accessible from their website. You can read them yourself. You'd have to be really naive to think you weren't being taken advantage of. Dude who owns it; a man actually named Jamey J. Jameson. I spent my adolescence trying to know this man. The only conclusion I can come to is that at some point he got bitter and his heart died. He holds himself with such disdain toward everything around him. ACT has a reputation for doing shows without licensing. This is because Jamey has made an enemy of nearly every prominent licensing company he's worked with. He has consistently refused to try to make amends because doing that would require admitting fault. He could fix this problem by being an adult and owning up to the person he's become but I know he'll never do that. This stubbornness is legitimately destroying his business. I'm embarrassed to have once considered him a mentor For a long time he would punish hyperactive KIDS in his KIDS productions by giving them 'the shirt'. Which was a punishment where Jamey's often unwashed sweaty t-shirt was pulled over a kid's head and they were held against his bare, stinking, damp, hairy torso. that's a deeply fucked up thing to do to children, man. At age 14, while I was still acting here, I developed an eating disorder. The adults around me spread the rumor that I had a sexually transmitted disease because I'm queer. Jamey would routinely mock me for having rapidly lost weight. I guess he thought it was like. Unmanly or something? Because there's nothing cooler than calling a child a fag (which he also did). Made him feel big and funny. I later learned he used my recovery as a story in a bid to receive funding from the city without my knowledge or consent. I wouldn't have allowed him to do that if he asked me. Pretty scummy thing to do, man. The summer of that year I had been volunteering as a counselor for the kid's theater camps and I was called ungrateful for taking a break to eat my lunch. Which considering the eating disorder thing that he clearly knew about. Dude??? I guess the work itself was the reward for the work. Many of the ppl in this building are known sex pests who are allowed to continue to work around their victims either because they supply funding to ACT, or out of desperation for actors who are naive enough to supply hours of unpaid, unsafe manual labor on the ever-instilled belief that they have no chance of acting in any other environment. As a child I felt unsafe. As an adult I felt degraded. I've seen this building ruin lives. Rend families apart. ACT likes to sell itself as a struggling haven for outcasts but it's not. It's a little dying hole in the wall where a sad little man's dead dreams poison everything around him. I loved this place. I made and lost some of the deepest friendships I think I'll ever have here. There's so much I learned about myself here, but I REFUSE to give the art centre theatre credit for that. That was me. This place drains people of every bit of passion they bring and claims credit for the things they achieve on their own. The effort and love of performers and directors is so brightly evident! It's what draws people In, makes the shows watchable. But performers are told that they are lesser for it. That nobody else will take them. That they're annoying and broken and that they deserve to work tirelessly and thanklessly to keep a man who hates them's dying business afloat. It's manipulative and considering that this place markets itself toward like. Kids and teens, it's evil. I hope you're reading this, Jamey. I hope one day someone gives you a wake-up call that actually works and you realize that the people around you are as real as you and that each of them goes through things just as miserable as the things you go through. Kindness is a choice you can make, and one that will reward you. That you are not stuck in your position because you are the victim of the world, but because people do not like you. And they dislike you not because of some unchangeable part of you, but because of how you've chosen to treat them. If you don't change you will die miserable. I'm only writing this in a public forum because I know you care so much about reputation and I think it actually might be the only way to reach you. Take it how you will but I'm finally done with this place
