Pepper Schnitzel (bottom) & Jäger Schnitzel (top)
    Cynthia H.

Curry Sausage is sooo delicious. I'm not a curry fan but the waitress recommended it and I'm literally licking the plate right now. :) Pepper Schnitzel paired with side Caesar salad and Croquets (fried mashed potatoes) was hands down delicious too! Hubby had the Jäger Schnitzel and loved it. Definitely coming back next time in Edmonton.

There aren't many German places in town. The only other options I can think of are The Bauernschmaus and German Cultural Centre. Haus Falkenstein opened awhile back but then closed due to a fire. They re-opened recently so we gave them a shot one Friday evening. Note their hours: only open from 4:00 - 9:00pm. I'd highly recommend reserving ahead if you're planning to come on a Friday or Saturday evening. That or go early 'cause it's busssssssy. The inside is bright, almost sterile. The clientele is an interesting mix of olddddd; they clearly have a well established clientele. Average age has to be at least 70. The menu is expansive but mainly due to their Guinness world record of having the most varieties of schnitzels. The menu is an interesting read - there's a FAQ justifying why they use processed cheese and canned mushrooms. - Erdinger weissbier ($8.50) - it's a wheat beer, easily drinkable. - Salad - complimentary salad for everyone. It doesn't look like much but the dressing had a light tangyness to it. - Homemade potato salad ($5.00) - we shared one order for the table. I'm not a huge potato salad fan but this was good. Just the right amount of creaminess. - Zigeuner cream schnitzel ($18.75) - the portion size is quite generous. The sauce was smooth, creamy and tasted exactly how I'd imagined a pepper sauce to taste like. - Holstein schnitzel ($19.75) - M subbed in homemade potato croquettes ($5.00 extra). The croquettes were awesome! Pricey but good. Her dish was more interesting with peas adding some vegetables and lightness to the dish. - Lethbridge schnitzel ($22.75) - Av ordered the Lethbridge and it was gone in no time. Always happy to see more restaurants on the west side. 3.5 stars.

Nice little family restaurant, schnitzel was good, we enjoyed our meals and were first time visitors we will be back.

Fried onions, crispy bacon and garlic butter schnitzel with salad and croquettes

I'm going to be honest - I was not expecting to like it here, but I used to live in a city where there was an amazing schnitzel house and I've been looking for a substitute since moving here. The first time I noticed this place, it was a fluke as we drove by. We walked in and the restaurant had a very overwhelming smell of oil permeating the air. We were looking for a take out menu, but they didn't have any, so we left. It popped up again in different reviews and they seemed positive, so we decided to come back and try a meal. We walked towards the front door and a man (he works there) sitting in a wheelchair smoking was in the doorway. He said we could slide around him, and that was an awkward stumble into the restaurant. Once inside, there were a couple of tables finishing up. We came shortly after dinner rush-hour, so we were lucky it wasn't busy. We sat and shared a beer while we waited for our food. (The beer was delicious!). Our server was very friendly - I think she may have been the owner. There are a lot of options to choose from, and I thought indecisive me would be stuck in indecision paralysis, (they held the world record for most types of schnitzel served) but the menu is pretty easy to navigate. (IE. Options read: 1. Bacon. 2. Bacon, onion. 3. Bacon, onion, mushroom, etc. So once you decide you don't want one type, you can move on to the next block of options.) We ordered the fried onions & garlic butter schnitzel plus added bacon, and the mushroom & onion cream sauce. We both wanted the croquettes and Caesar salad instead of fries. The portions are decent sized. You get two pieces of fresh schnitzel to an order and they are made fresh and pan fried to a crisp. Not too thin, perfectly crispy and flavourful, though I had some bites were saltier than others. The toppings were plentiful but I think the cream sauce was the winner over the garlic butter - there was some serious flavour going on. The salads were meh - a bit too soggy for my taste, and not super cold on the same plate as the rest of the food. I really enjoyed the croquettes! You get 5 per order and they are light and crispy with soft, fluffy mashed potatoes on the inside. Overall, a very yummy meal. A very pleasant surprise and something different to add to the restaurant scene.

    Weiner Schnitzel

Loved this place. Food was perfectly fried and seasoned and the meat was obviously fresh and not a frozen schnitzel that had been re-fried. Variety is incredible. There are 65 different schnitzels to choose from. We started with the sausage appetizer which consisted of two full sized bratwurst, sauerkraut, and some REALLY delicious mustard. The mustard was a little sweet rather than spicy and had a faint bitter flavour from the different mustard seeds. The combination of the sausage, kraut, and mustard is a bite you do not want to miss. For mains, we had the classic Weiner Schnitzel and the Lethbridge Schnitzel. Weiner Schnitzel was plain but solid. Lethbridge Schnitzel sent my tastebuds into a frenzy. It was a regular schnitzel topped with mushrooms, bacon, cheese and two sunny side eggs. Really delicious! The potato croquettes were really good too, but I'm not sure if it warranted an additional $5 charge. Mains also came with a Caesar salad. Pretty basic. It would've been nice to have a different salad option. Caesar can be pretty rich and everything else on the plate was already pretty heavy. The only reason I gave this a 4/5 was because the mushrooms on the Lethbridge Schnitzel were canned mushrooms and the cheese was processed cheese. Still delicious, but would've been exponentially better with fresh mushrooms and real cheese.

Family owned and run, this friendly little gem is tucked away on the west side of the city, and not one to be looked over! They have a variety of delisicious imported german beers to complement a crazy amount of varieties of schnitzel on their menu. If you prefer chicken vs pork, make sure you call ahead to let them know. The schnitzels are pounded nice and thin with a light crispy batter. I enjoyed mine with just a touch of lemon juice, while hubby went to town with the house special- the Falkenstien which is 2 large pork schnitzels smothered in a rich and lucious cream and chanterelle sauce. Their potato salad and croquettes are killer and if you have space, they have a variety of traditional sausages you can try. They occasionally have specials where they give away free beerware so watch their Twitter feed!

Service was really friendly & helpful for us first timers and since we're big fans of a good schnitzel, we ordered the jagerschnitzel (fried pork cutlet with mushroom) & the farmer's feast to get a little try of several things (smoked pork loin, sausage & pork roast with sauerkraut or red cabbage). Meals also come with salad, complimentary bread and your choice of side carb - we tried the dumpling, which is kind of like a big ball of stuffing with gravy on top, and the Viennese pasta - a gnocchi-ish lighter pasta (we liked this one best, it melted in your mouth!). Food was made fresh - you can hear them pounding out the schnitzel - and was very well seasoned. We ended with a slice of strudel to share and it was stuffed with so much apple, it was filling in itself! Decor is retro and cozy - a warm & inviting vibe for a cold wintery night. It felt like we'd stepped into an old school restaurant in Europe & we were digging it.

The reviews consistently criticized the food quality, describing it as soggy, dry, cold, or reheated from the previous day, and lacking in flavour. Additionally, the building was reportedly not heated, and the service was subpar. Furthermore, the restaurant's membership requirement added to the cost. Non-members were charged $34.95, which included a one-day membership, GST, and an 18% tip for what appeared to be a buffet. This resulted in a total cost of $43.30, which seemed excessive for the quality of food and service described in the reviews. Finding parking was a bit tough so be prepared to have to drive around a bit or park a little ways away and walk. Single person bathrooms were nice. It took a while for the staff to come take our order but when they did they were great about substitutions and explaining menu items. I ordered the Vegan Bratwurst ($15.95) which comes with tomatoes, eggs, baked beans, Hashbrowns and toast. Upon writing this review I realize I never did get my toast but the portion was still huge and I ended up taking some of it home anyways. The bratwurst was flavourful and cooked well done which I enjoyed, the baked beans were very tomatoey and a nice pairing. I loved having like half a fresh tomato too. At the table the Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict special was a popular order choice and the pulled pork was so flavourful - definitely one I'd come back and order. Also got to taste the breaded pork schnitzel eggs Benedict ($24.95) and the schnitzel was so good! All the portions were huge and a couple of us had our meals boxed up to take home the leftovers. I tried the Breaded Pork Schnitzel: schnitzel itself was 8/10. But the fact that it came with eggs, hashbrowns, and toast turns out to be a ton of food! "two eggs" - more like 6. There was a ton of scrambled egg and it was cooked perfectly. Hashbrowns were good but glad table had salt and pepper as they tasted completely unseasoned. But they forgot my toast and no one came to check on use until we were 90% done our meal. I did get my toast and it was fresh - comes with only jam and peanut butter as topping options. Boyfriend got the special of the day - pulled pork eggs benny. He was really happy with the flavors and extremely happy with the portions. Could not finish. Sausage was 10/10 good - very peppery. We loved the sauces on the table - boyfriend loved the ?curry ketchup. Very cool you can buy this on the way our as well. (I know the year 1982 well... It's when I was born. Ha ha.) Any restaurant with that kind of longevity is a mainstay. A reliable "forever" type of place that has stood the test of time - and believe me, it has been a test. Owned and operated by three generations of the Borówka family, their roots from Poland and Ukraine are reflected in the menu. They have even opened a second location downtown in recent years, expanding their comfort food empire twofold. So what is "continental" cuisine? By definition it's any food from Europe. And Continental Treat is prepared to feed you just like your European grandmother did. Voted Best/Favourite Continental Restaurant in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 by the Edmonton Journal, this restaurant's legacy lives on in the hearts of Edmontonians. The ambiance is palpable. Just walking by Continental Treat on any given evening, you will be delighted by a visual tableau of the most cozy and romantic restaurant that you have ever laid your eyes upon. Dim lighting, candle-lit tables, lovers holding hands and gazing into each other's eyes... That's what goes on here. I visited on a Saturday evening and was in the mood for a little bit of the CT magic. Their corner location allows for windows on both sides and the inside of the restaurant is packed with old-world charm. You'll find a lot of dark wood, perfectly set tables adorned with tablecloths, European art, and the aforementioned candle light. (We're talking wine bottles being used as candle holders with tons of wax dripping down the sides type of vibe.) It's exceedingly cozy with light jazzy piano music being played in the background. The space is certainly not modern in any sense but it feels right. Situated at a comfortable table in the middle of the dining room, I got myself acquainted with the martini list. There are some interesting options to choose from and I was curious about the Pink Squirrel (Amaretto, Creme de Cacao, cream, splash of grenadine - $14.95 for 2oz). It would be nice to see a "signature cocktail" or martini that reflects the restaurant and its cuisine a bit better (maybe it's the C-Tini, actually) but I am always happy to try something pink. I loved this pretty, pink, girly drink and enjoyed it thoroughly! Did it look a bit like Pepto-Bismol? Yes (and we made jokes about it). But it tasted delicious (not too strongly boozy) and I loved the cherry-sweet flavour! It was almost like a dessert! This martini looked cute and I would definitely order it again. Our server was personable and friendly, staying on top of our every need for the duration of our visit. I'm glad that I made a reservation because it wasn't long before every single table was occupied. We were immediately served a warm basket of two types of bread (gluten-free!) and I helped myself to a slice of rye slathered in ample amounts of melty butter. If I had to pick the most famous item on the Continental Treat menu it would have to be the Creamy Dill Pickle Soup (Helena's famous dill pickle soup - $6.50 for a cup). I have ordered it every single time that I have dined here and I'm sure that many other people do the same. This soup is a hit for a reason. If you had an Eastern European grandma (like I did) this will remind you of her soups. It's lighter than you think it will be and filled with nice big pieces of potatoes, pickles (of course!) and other vegetables. The pickle flavour is at the forefront but it isn't too much. (Let's be honest, it could never be too much for me). It's cozy comfort in soup form. In a city that boasts many amazing soups, this is certainly one of the top picks. You can even order a "Euro Bowl" which I think is a really big bowl of soup! No one would judge you - it would be the right call. There are also several other soups on the menu that sound amazing and if I could ever tear myself away from the pickle soup I would love to try the Red Barszcz or the Sauerkraut & Potato. Can we talk about the gluten-free aspect for a sec? Continental Treat wasn't always a "gluten-free restaurant." This change was brought to the menu in 2007 when the decision was made to embrace gluten-free cooking both to promote healthier eating as well as to provide wonderful European dishes to diners who have intolerances. The goal was to make food that is indistinguishable or superior to traditional gluten-containing products. And I have to say, eating that rye bread, I would never have known the difference. This makes me think of my Polish grandfather, who did indeed have celiac. He would have loved this place. I don't think of Continental Treat as a "gluten-free restaurant," I think of it as a European restaurant that happens to serve gluten-free food. You KNOW that Continental Treat is going to have Signature Gourmet Pierogies & Dumplings on their menu - it's a must a
