I didn't mind waiting a little bit for this sandwich, because it was so delicious. Ambiance of music in the background was interesting, and the decor was really nice. The service was a little bit slower, but it was worth it. I have been wanting to try out the sandwich for quite some time. If you love pork sandwiches, or if you love ham sandwiches, then you will love this sandwich. It's porky, hammy, cheesy, pickle-y.... it's just plain yummy. I came in here today with my husband. We've both walked by this place many times and never realized it's there. Which kind of annoys me now. Lol. But I'm so glad we found it. When we walked in there was a man and woman working. They appeared to be husband and wife, and I would presume the owners of the restaurant. They immediately greeted us and handed us menus. I ordered Andy's Cuban Original, and my husband ordered the La Medianoche, and two drinks. After ordering, there was a spare menu on the table, so we took the time to actively read the entire thing while we waited. My husband and I both found more we wanted to come back and try later. Once we ordered our food, I'm presuming Andy, as the menu names him, asked that if we had any issues with our food to let him know so he had the opportunity to make it right. Which when something isn't perfect, every business owner says, you should have said something. But they don't always seem approachable. But Andy was, and that tells me he loves and cares about his restaurant and customers leaving happy. Which I respect so much. Our food arrives and we dig in. I'm no expert on the authenticity of Cuban food, I'll be the first to admit. But it tasted amazing. The pork was flavorful and fall apart tender. My husband and I both agreed on the bread being what really made it. That pressing creates the crust and texture, which is absolutely necessary, and made me want to keep eating. The potato sticks took me back to my childhood, so that was a fun nostalgic moment. While we were eating, Andy brought out a sauce to dip our sandwiches in. I can't remember what it's called, but it was heavy on the lemon juice and garlic, which paired really well with the pork in our sandwiches. This also added to the crave-ability factor, and I loved that. This restaurant is small, but very comfortable, very clean, and has a fun and vibrant atmosphere. It was a relaxing and delicious lunch. Prices were good too. I didn't have any leftovers, as my husband finished my sandwich, but we were both full when we left. Would I return? Yes! Definitely, yes. I love that I found an amazing small local business with delicious food and good prices to get an excellent lunch that will fill me up and keep me going all day, served in a warm and welcoming environment by people who care about their restaurant and customers. My gorgeous wife and I, stopped here for dinner before an evening wedding. Wo both had the Pollo en la Plancha, two coladas and two jumps hard nectar to flush out down. The food we had was great, tasty and had good flavor. Make sure to get the yucca fries, best in Eugene. Andy and company did a great job in the service department. We both loved the ambiance with a phenomenalmural and plenty of pictures. It is as good as anywhere in the world. We are both fans of the Caribbean, Miami and the Latin culture and did extensive travels to those locations. We can only recommend the Havana Cafe. This little gem was exactly what we were looking for. A place with a Low key atmosphere, great food, with a home like feel.. This was it!! Great made to order delicious food. Staff and the owner walking around checking on us. They did not say no to the few special request we had, like dicing up my son's chicken, making our fried plantains without seasoning, and bring our rice pudding with a candle for my son. Yes!! They went far and beyond and we will never forget them, especially when we return. All our dishes were excellent and we even brought extras back to the hotel for a late night snack.. My favorite spot to eat in Eugene ! Everything that we try at Havana Cafe is genuinely so delicious with real authentic flavor that you can taste in every bite. The Fried plantains are amazing and the flavors in the cuban sandwich are unreal. The Croquetas De Jamon Y Papa are a must grab for dessert everytime we go!! They have dominos on the tables that you can play which was a fun way to pass some time while waiting for our food or just looking at all the different posters on the walls about cuba. The owner is the kindest man that you can tell puts in maximum effort into his work. Each time we go he is there at the counter to greet us and make us feel so welcome giving tips on how to reheat the food, really truly going above and beyond. When I tell you Havana Cafe is incredible, I really mean it. So, so, so tasty! This was my first time trying tostones and maduros and my life is now changed for the better. Paired with la medianoche (pork, ham, swiss, and mayo on sweet bread) and a fizzy drink, this meal hit the spot like you wouldn't believe. Service was great, friendly, and incredibly fast, considering we weren't the only ones at the restaurant and we ordered various items. Once our food was at our table, it was a treat to enjoy fried plantains for the first time among other delicious things. The portion sizes are very generous - after eating half of our appetizer, I could only eat half of my sandwich, so I took the other half home along with some of the remaining pik-nik potato sticks. It was enough to be a full meal in and of itself! The restaurant itself has beautiful decor - I love the wall with all the framed pictures. The staff also keeps everything very clean and bright. This place is wonderful. There is a huge mural to greet you as you enter, along with tons of photos and memorabilia, so it was a fun place to sit and eat. The food was fantastic. I've had their sandwiches before, which are very good. Today I got fufu, which is mashed, fried plantain. It came with pulled pork and black beans. Each component was excellent, and the combination was extraordinary. The pork was tender, the plantains had a strong lime flavor, the beans were aromatic with a perfect texture. Wow. What an amazing meal. The yucca fries were also delicious, and came with a lemony sauce that was a great complement. The grilled chicken was good, but a little dry, and not as mind-blowingly good as the fufu. Service was a little slow - it looked like they were understaffed for a late lunch. I hope they can get a little more help, although I know how hard that is in the restaurant business. If you haven't tried this place yet, you absolutely must. If you haven't been recently, go back. I hadn't been there for years, and I wish I'd gone back to try more of their menu. I'll be there again soon, there's still a lot to eat! read more

Amazing food! Incredible service! Welcoming ambiance, absolutely worth visiting! The rice and beans alone are so filling and tasty. Highly recommend for an inexpensive lunch. Pair it with some salty tostones and you have a big lunch, still a good price! I have yet to try any of their chicken dishes but all the beef entrees are great and so flavorful. Simply amazing! Happened upon this restaurant on our way to other restaurant. Spectacular hospitality, deliciously spiced Cuban comfort food. My wife & I tried this place yesterday for the first time. We ordered the Pollo en la Plancha, Andy's Original Cuban, and the Picadillo. All were *amazing*. Very savory and flavorful, but none of them were too spicy. The Cuban's bread was crisp on the outside, but not hard. Perfect crunch. The Pollo was very flavorful, as were the beans that came with them. And, the Picadillo was savory too! I am a very finicky eater. Had dinner here the other night. The owner/chef Andy was so nice. Spoke to us when we came in and multiple times while we were there. I had a cubano and it was the best I've ever had and everything was done authentically Cuban down to the type of bread used. While we were there an elderly man came in and you could tell he was a regular. He was treated with such respect and care it blew me away. This is definitely a hidden gem! It's nice to have another option for a different cultures food. I of course don't know what I'm looking for authenticity wise but it definitely would convince me to try Cuban food another time. When we walked in the owner offered us some Cuban coffee which was strong and delicious. We ordered three different sandwiches and a sampler plate that were all very good! As I was appreciating the family photos on the wall, the owner said hello and was happy to give me his time explaining stories behind the photos. Very welcoming and personable family oriented place! I read some of these reviews and am puzzled. When I make rice (which is often) I only add a pinch of salt as most guides say to do. It's pretty bland, it's supposed to be, as a base for what is going with it so I add salt to my food as needed to my liking. The same with spaghetti, a pinch of salt in the water, then you add the sauce. I had the ropa vieja with rice and black beans today at Havana Cafe and poured the beans over the rice like mom taught me to do and they were flavorful. I think the prices are reasonable considering that everything is more expensive and minimum wage has gone up. I remember going to a favorite restaurant and paying under ten dollars for a meal just two years ago and that same meal now costs over $15 that I had a couple weeks ago. I spoke to the owner after my visit and he explained that he cooks most of the food himself from scratch, that's refreshing and it tastes that way. I'll be returning again, it reminds me of Miami and home so much. And for the record nobody in their right mind liked Fidel or Hitler either! read more

I happened upon this place completely by accident. I was walking the wrong way to get ramen when I saw the well designed space and thought...pulled pork sounds better. I got the Arroz con frijoles negros y lechon (which is simply black beans and rice with slow roasted pork and simply delicious). I topped it with some Havana Cafe Mojo sauce which took it over the edge. I also got a side of plantains that were hot and fresh. This was my first time having Cuban food and I will be trying this again! The bread was so crispy, the pork was tender and juicy I'm surprised the bread stayed so crispy with how much juice came from the meat. I'm not a fan of mustard and I wasn't sure if the ham was needed in the sandwich but I shoudn't have questioned it, all the flavors came together beautifully. This is definitely the type of sandwich you want to grab on a cold day. Next time I would grab their mojo sauce just to change the flavor a bit, this is a hearty sandwich and with all the savory meat the tartness of the mojo sauce would pair nicely. This meal will definitely fill you up and keep you full. The fries were super crispy, there is salt on the table for you to add.
