I think one of the things that brought such peace to my siblings and me was the upbeat attitude of EVERYONE, and the way everyone worked together.

You can tell immediately that this side is newer. The unit is unique in that the rooms are mostly all shared. It appears that space is limited, and that may explain why. We chose to stay at Barrow, despite shared rooms, because this is thw place with the most specialized rehab for spinal cord injuries. Thankfully, hubby had a room of his own for the entire stay. The rooms, because they are shared, do not have a sofa like other rooms. But they do have a tall cabinet, a dresser, and a really big t.v. on each side of the room. There is a curtain that separate the two spaces. There are two gyms--a physical therapy gym and an occupational therapy gym, which had a robotics gym. The PT gym has a small indoor track, a short set of stairs, a life-size model car front end, a ride of padded tables, and many machines to work out muscles and practice balancing. The OT gym has a couple of padded tables, a table to sit and do activities for fine motor skills, a weight and stretching machine, and some really cool state of the art machines to help with balance and coordination. Hubby got to use a life-size video game in which you use your legs to move a basket to catch the balls on the big screen. Very cool! There is a real "home" complete with a big kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and laundry so that people can learn how to safely function in the home with their new limitations. The staff here is top notch. All of them. From the nurses to the therapists to the PCT's (many of whom are RNs in the PCT role for the day) to the doctors. They are attentive and really rooting for everyone to get better. I can't give them enough praise. Nobody wants to have to be a patient here, but if you need a Neuro rehab center, this one is great.

When I was researching options for my wife's post-surgical recovery, I found very little detailed feedback about the inpatient rehab facility. I hope this review helps fill that gap. Let me start by saying: the treatment my wife received was phenomenal. That's not a word I use lightly. I come from a professional background that emphasizes planning, execution, and a pursuit of excellence, and I was genuinely impressed at every level. The medical care was outstanding. Dr. Bliss and Dr. Linke were not only knowledgeable but also deeply attentive and responsive. When a few complications arose, both physicians intervened promptly and with skill, leaving no room for doubt about their commitment and expertise. The nursing staff deserves praise as well--they were consistently helpful, kind, and ready to go the extra mile. But the heart of this review, and the true stars of the experience, are the physical and occupational therapy teams. Simply put: wow. Whether it's their training, their personalities, or a combination of both, the PT/OT staff at Barrow are compassionate, driven, and remarkably effective. Their ability to connect, motivate, and produce tangible results made a real difference in my wife's recovery. They don't just go through the motions--they care, and it shows. No hospital experience is without its challenges, but this one came remarkably close to faultless. And I say "almost" only because perfection is such a subjective, elusive thing. To the entire Barrow rehab team: kudos. You exceeded expectations in every way. ---

Relatively easy to navigate the Muhammad Ali building as opposed to the Barrow Neurological Institute across the street which is like a maze. Staff here is pretty nice & efficient. I will say it seems many of the doctors have a bit of a flat affect. Not sure if it's intentional so as not to over stimulate the patient and while I find it boring, they do airline effectively communicate the information. My one real kvetch is for the audio testing, before you close someone in that stupid box, ask someone if they're claustrophobic. My goodness. Since the first day I walked into their office, I was…read morewelcomed by Wendy at the front desk & introduced to their attentive but laid back team of rehab professionals. I've had an excellent experience here. The reason I needed PT wasn't excellent of course: while outside canvassing a neighborhood for the election, I had to chase a dog that got loose & in the process, I injured my foot. Yes I caught that pup but damn: my foot! Luckily my employer had worker's comp which I've never had to use before. From that incident, my one foot has this slight, but deep pain between my big & second toes, so that, just walking in the grocery store, I often feel a tweak. I'm SOL to be able to run/hike like I am used to. The pros at STI - Dr. Issac, Dr. David & Wally - created a program to address the injured foot muscles, the sesamoids. I've learned quite a bit about what I take for granted from them: my ability to hike/run on two healthy feet with all their different muscles, tendons and bones. The team created a routine of about 12-15 different + rigorous exercises, that slowly increase in reps/weight, to strengthen the injured muscle/bone. Exercises are also for my legs, not just my foot, so definitely a holistic approach to healing the targeted injury. Again this team demonstrates patience, expertise and kindness in their directions. Most days, my session ends with the ultrasound machine hooked up to my foot, delivering slight electrical pulses to the area. Other times one of the physical therapists massages the muscles with a set of tools. I think that's called the Graston technique? using specifically made instruments to massage the tissue/fascia around that area. They are cautious/gentle in how they handle my foot. All of these different techniques contribute to the healing process. In the past 12 weeks, I've experienced a significant decrease in my pain and my foot keeps feeling better and better. A few more weeks & I hope to be good to go. I can't wait to get back to my usual hiking/running - being physically active keeps me sane! Thanks y'all!

I really like having all my needs centralized, so kudos to whomever did the planning for these centralized services. While the building is medium sized, they do also have centralized parking. Rarely have I not been able to find parking. STI Physical Therapy is located, as I mentioned earlier, on the third floor right outside the elevators. The entrance door is rather inconspicuous and you'd pass right by it, if you weren't sure of the name. The reception and lobby area is very small, but clean. They've got the usual flat television screen, magazines and water cooler, while you wait to be seen. In the back, the floor plan is L-shaped. They've used the main area to layout work tables and electronic massage equipment.Towards the back of this area, you've got various workout equipment: balls, stretch rubber bands, weights, bars, stationery bikes, pulleys and step up machine. Initially you may think this isn't enough, until you begin working out. STI has just enough equipment and professionalism to target a group or centralized muscle. They also have a small bathroom and shower area, should you desire to freshen up. After working out, you lay on the table and can opt for a cold pack with massage. The physical therapy team laugh and joke a lot, but rotate to attend to each phase of your workout. Upon completion, you're given a black and white homework exercise program. Checking out with the Front Desk is fairly simple and I've been very happy with their appointment setting and paperwork handling skills. Overall, I'm quite pleased with this facility and would recommend them. Office hours: Mon - Weds, Thurs 6 am - 8 pm Tues 6 am - 6 pm Fri 6 am - 3 pm Phone: (602) 279-8022 Fax (602) 279-8029
