I haven't had general dental insurance since I moved to the United States. But when I needed an implant or crown several times, I was surprised at the high cost of treatment. Fortunately, I was using a type of co-insurance at my main dental office and I renews every year. With this insurance, the cost of regular checkups including tooth cleaning twice a year is free. But I started thinking about a little more fulfilling insurance, so I called HDS and asked questions. I was able to understand what I didn't know until now by their explaining. Even if I have insurance, I will not be eligible for insurance treatment immediately, and I need a waiting period of up to 12 months. However, even during the waiting period, it seems that I can get a discount on the treatment fee at the dental clinic as an insurance member. When I heard this, I immediately decided to enrollment online. Normally, if you complete Enroll by the end of each month, you will be treated as an insurance member on the 1st of the next month. You will receive a card at home in about 2 weeks from registration. Currently, it seems that the downtown office has nobody but the customer service office is above. So when I called customer service with the phone installed at the entrance of the HDS main office, the staff came down immediately, opened the office, and explained various things and answering my questions. I certainly thought it was a little inconvenient system, but I was relieved because the staff who responded were very kind. It can be said that the fact that there are so many dentists in the HDS network has a high point for me as a resident of Hawaii. Well, I will gradually know how much benefit I have from joining this insurance in the next year. We all want nothing false when it comes to dental... My employer doesn't cover any dental whatsoever and never really mentioned it to us about how to go about and get it for ourselves and I'm not sure if many are going through this as the increase of minimum wages, product prices and just the overall cost of it all increasing. For the first time in my life I had to get my adult self and take care of it as I've been putting it of much too long than needed, so I did go online and read thoroughly the various plans and quotes HDS has to offer. Very simple and easy to navigate for whatever reason I couldn't move past payment and I've tried everything gah!!! For simple question yes but not really comfortable doing business over the phone I decided to just make the trip downtown to their office located in the Pioneer Plaza. The weird it seems like it's been vacated as what I learned later they moved to this current office two years ago...yup at the start of pandemic so many staff are still working remotely though there are still many in offices located in another area in the building, all you'll see is a phone with extension number access with a sign above stating "Welcome, Walk-in Visitors!" Seeing this I already felt exhausted after making it this far I wanted to give in...I went back downstairs and gave it another thought and after much decision I knew that this was my only option and went back and just was about to call when a staff was walking by and after my assessing my situation called down a staff for me to take care of my issues. Got in and all done in just minutes...felt great of course but just wished it could've been all avoided. Happy to have coverage though reviewing it it will take so long to take advantage any of it not sure it was the right thing to do. read more

Unfortunately our company uses HDS for dental insurance. In reviewing what our plan covers, it covers basic x-rays and cleaning. And once a year periodic oral exams, if you Google the number of times oral exams are recommended, they recommend twice a year but HDS covers it for only once a year so the 2nd exam is out of pocket expense for me. This makes me think HDS isn't looking out for our best interest in not following national guidelines. The maximum yearly amount they cover is a low amount, therefore if you require fillings or anything beyond basic care, there will be an out of pocket expense for sure. Not sure if our company is only providing the minimum or what but it seems sparse insurance coverage from HDS. I would also recommend if you have questions with HDS to do it in writing as customer service gives different responses to the same questions, one person gives you one response and another gives a different response, no wonder it's recorded. read more

I've had HDS for about 18 years. (There was a two-year gap when I was unemployed and underemployed.) All those years of paying premiums. . .they could care less. Unfortunately, I recently needed my bottom left molar removed, and an implant placed. I was born missing nine adult teeth, so the few I have take a beating, and I can't afford to lose any. Implants are incredibly expensive, and HDS pays a measly max of $1000 per year. The $1000 ftom HDS went to the oral surgeon. Unfortunately, in 2021, about six weeks after finally getting my new left tooth placed by the dentist, the bottom right molar gave up for ghost. The jagged crater of tooth that remained had to be pulled, and an implant placed. Since I had exhausted the 2021 benefit, I had to pay the full amount to the oral surgeon - $1800+. I was not ready for the new tooth until 2022, so I sighed in relief as I believed that, with the new year, the $1000 benefit would go to the dentist. Stupid me! HDS paid less than $300 for the actual tooth replacement, which is a different benefit than the $1000, which remains unused. They refuse to pay for the abutment, which is very expensive. They have an idiotic rule that the benefit kicks in only every seven year for each tooth. It has been a bit less than seven years since I got a root canal and crown on this tooth. As a result, I had to pay $1400+ to the dentist. For one tooth that I really need. Here is what I find particularly ridiculous - and I'm holding off on using the word I really want to use - by paying a portion of the actual tooth, IMHO they acknowledge that this is important to my health. But the dentist cannot just plop a new tooth in there without adjusting it, filing it, etc. So, to me, the logic is that HDS should fork over the $1000 benefit to the dentist. I plan to dispute the claim. I don't know if I have a snowball's chance, and the process could be torturous, but I need to try. No wonder so many people harm their health by forgoing dental care. I keep switching Dentist here on Maui because Dentist\Doctors here RATHER DO WHAT THEY WANT THEN WHAT THE PATIENT WANTS, so I think I might be going to OAHU to look for a MORE COMPETENT DENTISTRY!!! REally strange experiences with them. I had one dentist who took this and it was amazing and saved me so much money. And then it was like...almost no one else would even ACCEPT their dental discount card, except for couple of dentists with one star ratings. (That I didn't even try). This one is touch and go. If you want good dental care, and want to use this, I'd say find a dentist who will take it first, then enroll. Otherwise it might be a total waste. read more

I understood from the beginning joining HDS that I was allowed exam/ cleaning twice a year. Today I called in cause I see on my bill that I was charged $45.86 for EXAM PERIDOC. It was my 2nd cleaning this year.I thought it was covered?! Had some other xray charges ($164.10) which they covered but, not the cleaning. He goes on to say that I haven't met my deductible. I just wanted to leave a review based off the care provided from your company during yesterday's HDS tooth fairy fun day at the discovery center. First and foremost, I want to point out that at my daughter's dental screening, the dentist was VERY rude. She was telling me my daughter has a cavity and that I need to get it filled in NOW. I advised her that my daughters father and I have joint custody and he hasn't given me the clear to get it filled so I legally am not allowed to make any sole decisions on my child's behalf. She looked at me like I was crazy and I could see the disapproval on her face. She said it shouldn't matter what he says and that I need to go ahead and get it done.. Also, she thought I was by myself so she was really going in. When my mom told her that she doesn't know the situation and she shouldn't be so rude she just kinda shut up. Please HDS, teach your staff to be more empathetic and kinder to patients and their families. read more

I've had dental insurance with many of the major carriers on the mainland, including Aetna, Metlife, Cigna, and also Delta Dental (which HDS is part of). I have never had any issues with claims being processed and never had any reason to complain. With HDS in Hawaii, I have had issues with every single claim. They deny claims and don't provide any reason that makes sense. They denied a crown that both a top dentist and top endodontist said was necessary due to a major fracture in the molar. HDS simply said it was not necessary. Despite over a year of going back and forth and explaining that I was in so much pain before the crown that I could not eat, they still said it was not necessary. When they do pay out on claims, it is so small that it is not even worth the time it took to get them to pay out (endless phone calls and complaints). This company is clearly not reputable and they engage in very unethical practices. HDS is just is shady. If you have a choice in which provider you use, you are better off with another one. read more

I recently had a couple of fillings done and I was told HDS would not cover me. Looking up my policy, I see I have PLAN MAXIMUM-INDIVIDUAL UNLIMITED, shown on their website. How can I have such a plan and not be covered for a standard filling? I am so disappointed in their integrity. Looks like the Missionaries are back! I paid for my uncles caretaker for yeArs after the passing of my uncle. I paid for her monthly insurance and when she moved away she didn't leave a phone number or forwarding address. I called HDS and was instructed to send a letter or email requesting the cancellation of the plan. I didn't know her subscriber number so I couldn't shatter that information with HDS. They knew who she was after I gave them her name and address so I sent the email that I shared with HDS. They took it upon themselves to send a bill for over $ 100 WiTHOuT any notice. They said that it was too late to reverse the unauthorized charge even after I sent the proof that it was sent 2 months ago. Very unethical operation. They can refund the ACH amount sent to my bank. They know that they received the Vance notice and can refund the money to me but they said it was too late and that nothing can be done. What a crock this is. I work in a dental office so I work with HDS on a daily basis. Typcially, I usually have great experience with the reps from this company but recently this has not been the case. I feel like I deal with the same provider rep every time I call for information. Within the last few months the help I receive is minimal, condescending, & not helpful. I have been in the dental field for 8 years, and know my shiz. So when I call for a question it's a pretty big deal to get more info then "it's always been that way". I'm fed up with insurance's dictating standards, then changing frequency allowances to not match up the benefit year. Why the heck would a plan max restart in July, but the cleanings and exams restart in January. COME ON INSURANCE! thats a joke. read more

You pay them good money every month and when you actually need a filling you find out that someplace deep in your contract (that, of course, you didn't read) there is a ludicrous and unimaginably shady waiting period for even a simple tooth filling. Even if you had a different HDS plan for many years all the way up to the prior year. Waiting periods from 3-12 months or more depending on what you need. I remember the old days when you paid insurance every month they covered you when you needed them. Just paid $400.00 out of pocket for a 2-second filling! Not a good experience. The enrollment and new customer on-boarding process is non existent. The website design and process is from the 90s. When you put in your banking information for automatic deduction, nothing happens after you click submit. There is no feedback, no communication, no official notification no email to confirm your enrollment. Your information just goes into cyberspace. I called on 4 separate occasions and spoke to customer service on how to even enroll online, which defeats the whole online enrollment. The irony is I've been working online full-time for the last 16 years and I couldn't figure it out. To date, I have not gotten a single piece of information of what my plan is, what my coverage entails, nada. During one of my phone calls, I insisted they send me some form of confirmation so I can send it to my CPA as part of my expenses. A billing analyst wrote me a half assed email to say my enrollment has been received. Seriously? This sounds like some back office operation that's run mom and pop style. read more

The full benefits documentation does give the whole picture of benefits. For example, my plan said 50% for porcelain crowns but today I find out that because it is an implant-supported crown, it is not 50%. My point is that this information was not provided on the Benefit sheet on which I based my decision to purchase the delux Plan. Short story--be prepared to pay more and know that the literature is not accurate. Seems odd that this is not considered as false advertising and basically cheating. read more

Updating my prior review. After the review was posted, I was promptly contacted by HDS' marketing department and was further referred to the customer service manager, Jarrett. Jarrett arranged a time that we could discuss my case and ensured that there was a possibility that this case could be disputed. He let me know the necessary steps and which documents my dentist needed to submit to their consultant board. I was able to get some of the expense covered by HDS for my crown replacement. With the end of the year coming up it was time to renew our dental insurance. Being retired we must pay for our own dental insurance. The process was so simple and fast. Just called up HDS, lucky and connected right away to Leslie. No long hold time or leave a message. Leslie was so pleasant and efficient. She asked for my name and member number. Leslie then verified my credit card number and everything was done. Leslie has excellent customer service skills. She was very patient with me locating all my information. Anything that needed repeating like numbers Leslie was so patient and remained calm Thank you HDS for offering a great private insurance but most importantly having wonderful employees like Leslie. read more

My experience with this company was completely unsatisfactory. I have never received such horrible service. I just received dental insurance through my employer, so I made an appointment for a comprehensive exam and cleaning. I missed my first scheduled appointment, so I called back to reschedule. Not only was I on the phone for a total of 55 minutes, but the first representative that I spoke to told me that she wasn't sure when the next available appointment for a cleaning was, and that she'd have to have someone call me back. I then asked to speak to a manager. She said that she couldn't transfer me to a manager and continually interrupted me throughout out conversation. I then asked for the supervisor's name, she told me it was Sharon, and I hung up. I called back and had to ask a different representative to allow me to speak to the manager. Finally, after almost 45 minutes on the phone with this company, the manager scheduled an appointment. The appointment date and time wasn't convenient for me and far from what I asked for, but I figured I was lucky to get an appointment at all. The representatives that work at this company's administrative office need to participate in some serious training in customer service. They should also probably hire some new representatives with some experience in scheduling as well. I hardly post harsh reviews, but this company really needs to make some changes. read more

i was a member for over a decade because of employer, then apparently you have to reregister every year according to the person on the phone. I didnt receive any calls or in the mail to renew. I found out we're cut off when my wife tried to use it for cleaning and it was on autopay. I registered again and guess what? another 1 year waiting period to get full benefits. read more

I wish I could give HDS ZERO stars. I had my entire family insured with them for well over a decade. Switched jobs and signed up for individual plan. My daughter had started Invisalign with her orthodontist. I intentionally picked a super expensive plan with orthodontic coverage to switch to. Since she already had started treatment a few months before (while on HDS through my job), they called it a "pre-existing condition" and will not continue to pay. However, they not only willingly took my money for the expensive 'with orthodontics' plan knowing this scenario up front and not explaining it to me, but when I called to ask them about it the customer service woman was smug, rude, and basically said "love it or leave it" to me. Further, the orthodontist told me she had this come up before with a woman who had the same issue with her daughter but because she was a business owner who paid for many employees to have HDS coverage, they made an exception to their idiotic rule and allowed her to use the orthodontic part of her plan anyway. If you have HMSA you have another option but we have Kaiser for our health plan so HDS holds an absolute MONOPOLY for dental insurance on this island. My other option is to buy mainland insurance which is exactly what I plan to do! I would rather take my business NON-LOCAL if it means otherwise dealing with rudeness like this. read more

I've had HDS for several years now, and their customer service has gotten to the point of being absolutely TERRIBLE. I've had problems with my online account and contacted customer service several times to help rectify the problem, but still nothing (not even a courtesy call or email). They send me an email to view a recent claim, but how am I supposed to check it when I can't even select the person on my account to view their claim history? Also, their coverage is not very good given the amount that I've had to pay in premiums. It's not really worth it, so I will most likely not be renewing my policy with them for next year. read more

They reject almost every claim. I'm stuck with it because it is tagged onto my medical insurance so can't upgrade. Even so, the cost just isn't worth it. The pay rate makes it a loss for a dentist to fill a tooth. You have to wait until it is a root canal or crown for it to pay. eeeccchhh! read more
