I was on my way to Shabuya and ended up finding this food truck along the way as a happy accident…read more As a casual daily helper, I'm always looking at Yelp to help me find my next meal, so naturally I've heard of Laverne's for a while. When I found this food truck, I immediately wanted to stop by and see what the hype was about. I visited about 30 minutes before closing. The only thing they had run out of was the chop steak and one other protein, which wasn't too big of a deal for me. My eye was on the beef stew. Growing up in a Filipino household, I knew this dish as "caldareta." My dad would make this for me all the time. I asked for a bowl to go so I could enjoy it for dinner later. The first bite instantly sent me back to my family's home kitchen, where I would come home from school and find a pot of beef stew waiting for me. What I love about Hawaii is that it has a blend of cultures that I truly appreciate as a foodie, and experiences like this feel like a nostalgia tour. Thank you for this delicious meal. It made me miss my mom and dad a little more than I usually do. Food not only nourishes us, but also brings us back to a moment in time. I thank Laverne's for that.

Finally made it and it did not disappoint. Easy to find, clean and hospitable. Staff was friendly, like talk small kine story and showed Aloha. Good recommendations and descriptions of the menu options were given and recommendations followed. I tried the pork belly adobo and the ahi belly. My wife had the Garlic furikake chicken and the ahi belly. The star here was the Ahi Belly. Rich fatty Ahi Belly with the hint of garlic that didn't over power the fish. Portions were huge and welcomed after a 6h flight. The Pork Belly adobo had the right garlic adobe flavor and so ono with rice. The Mac salad met my expectations. The garlic furikake chicken was ono as well; tender and juicy with that garlic kick I would expect with the umami of the furikake. Broke da mouth grindz is now in my goto list when I'm back home visiting family. Mahalo nui.

He liked it, and by reading the more recent comments, I guess everyone else likes it, too. And I admit that the first and last time I came, more than 2 years ago, the food was good. But if you read my original post, you'll know that I had and issue with their online ordering and, to make a long story short, I ordered online for their KONA store which was misleading in their website. The owner at the Kapolei store said they would remake the order, and that she'd call the Kona store to cancel my payment. Bottom line, never happened! Ended up paying the Kona store $45+ and Kapolei $45+. So ultimately, I paid $91+ for two plates. Never got the refund, haven't been back since. So I realize they probably don't care about ONE negative customer since they have so many good reviews. Like..."who cares about this guy?" So yeah, no matter how good the food was, I'm NEVER going back.
