When ordering she didn't say it would cost more because it was a special combo. When I questioned her about it she thought it was funny and didn't seem to care about it. Not sure what changed, but the food from here used to be better. The chicken didn't really taste like chicken. In fact, it had almost no taste at all, which was odd. After driving off and eating the food I noticed the egg roll had dried out. secondly when eating the crab rangoon, same thing. Returned to the restaurant for a refund was only offered half. This was once the best place downriver for Chinese food. When Covid hit they went Carry Out only and haven't been the same since. No more hot tea with your meal. No more hot soup. The food was not very good. We ordered the House Special Lo Mein, Kung Pao Chicken, Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Pork Fried Rice, and Crab Rangoon's. The Lo Mein was basically ramen noodles with some meat. It was flavorless and probably the worst Lo Mein I have ever had. Kung Pao was the same very soupy and no flavor. Sweet and Sour shrimp was ok a little over cooked but edible. My family and I have been going here over fifteen years and their food is great food for a great price. My family gatherings can get pretty large and the waitstaff have always been able to handle the large group quite well. The egg drop soup is second to none, and I've been to many, many Chinese food places. Their Sweet & Sour anything is delicious (I prefer chicken) and in spite of a large appetite or sharing with a young niece or nephew, I always have leftovers that are just as good for a leftovers lunch the next day. Yes, the decor is dated and hasn't changed in over 15 years (except for a renovation of the bathrooms). Yes, the shopping center it's located in is nearly deserted (largely the fault of the management company). Yes, the whole neighborhood is run down (auto industry slow-down). I've lived in this area for many years and this place was always my "go to" for Chinese food but not any more, unfortunately. They had been closed for a long time due to this stupid Corona crap. When they opened for business, finally I ordered my usual sweet and sour chicken along with shrimp fried rice and egg rolls. Not good!! It tasted like everything was cooked in old cooking oil. I could not finish it and ended up throwing it out. I think the original owners retired and sold the place to younger owners and the quality just isn't there anymore. read more

Been ordering here since i was a little girl. Tonight i am so disappointed! Tried their almond chicken since ive ate there over 25 years i figured hey try something new! Worst decision ive ever made! It was so bland,greasy, and disgusting i couldnt even eat it! The breading fell off the chicken and was soggy in most areas from so much grease left at the bottom. I called up there to complain which i NEVER DO. I explained what was wrong asking to be put in a book for the next time i ordered but the lady told me i had to bring the food back (which is illegal by osha..fda...etc) to prove that her cook of 20 plus years gave me bad food that needed replaced. And that this is their number 1 saler! You think being a customer of 25 years would get you some type of respect and appreciation when there is a problem like this, esp. Explaining to her that ive had a brain anerysum and cant drive and that i even had to have someone go pick up my order for me!!! Always had good food since the 80's, but tonight was a let down. The oil was old and it ruined everything :( Same carpet from the 70's, black and smells like fungus, but it's still red underneath the tables if you look good. This restaurant is your expected chinese restaurant in a strip mall. Not very fancy, decent food for a decent price. I had my usual ABC(Almond Boneless Chicken). The brown gravy was decent. Don't let the well worn booths and dated decor fool you! If you're looking for amazing food, good service and a great value, this is the place! I have been coming here for over 15 years and have my staple items that I tend to get. Their egg rolls are one of my favorite things. I like that they are filled with bean sprouts instead of cabbage. HI was a regular part of my diet when I was a younger lad, living in metro Detroit. I've since developed my palate significantly since then, but this place has the Sweet and Sour dishes MASTERED. Decided to go after reading the reviews. The food was pretty much awful. Ordered several things since I haven't been there before. Almost everything went into the trash after the first bite. Pork chow mein: Came in a puddle of grey gelantinous sauce. No flavor and very mushy. The entire container went in the trash Beef with broccoli: About 50% of the container was onions and so everything tasted like onions. Beef was grey and fairly tasteless. Broccoli was horribly overcooked and mushy. Went in the garbage. Eggrolls: Completely awful! The filling literally was 100% bean sprouts....I pulled it out and checked after the first gross bite. No carrots, scallions, proteins...Just ate the wrapper. Thew them away. Crab rangoons: Basically all cream cheese without any noticeable crab. Threw most of them away. Sweet and sour pork: My daughters like it. Nice and crunchy. Sauce was so so. Pork fried rice: Pretty tasty. This and the s/s pork were the only things not thrown in the trash. Will not go again. So, keeping in mind that I grew up around more NY style Chinese, here's what I have thought about Hawaiian Island. I don't know if this is a weird midwest or northern thing, but I do not get why the egg rolls have bean sprouts instead of cabbage? Egg rolls here are just not my thing. The food is good, and to me it's just A-OK. Nothing too great, nothing bad. I've tried a few dishes, and they taste a bit bland to me. Across the board I think the food could use more flavor. It's not my first choice for Chinese, but it will do in a pinch. I have family that absolutely love HI and have been coming for years. This is a great place to get your fill of fatty Chinese food if that's what you're craving! We did a take-out order and it was ready very quickly. The chicken had a ton of batter on it which tastes great but left me feeling sick for about an hour after. The sauces were good (normal Chinese stuff). The crab rangoon was above average in my book, really creamy. Eggrolls were gross. All that said, if you're craving some greasy Chinese food, hit up Hawaiian Island.
