As a regular there that dines in for lunch on the weekend, the service and food is very tasty. I went there for a pick up at dinner time and there was a different person there than lunchtime (no big deal as she was doing her usual managing the dine-in crowd). There was a different woman that cashed me out and made it a point to tell me to tell me to tip and put her hand on the tip jar. I always tip well when i have good service dining in. Went to the China Bowl restaurant for dinner, it's a little rough around the edges inside, could use some TLC, the food is excellent and they give you tremendous portions for your money. The employees are so sweet and accommodating to you. They have only one waitress for the whole restaurant and she is fantastic at her job. She is organized and very pleasant and takes good care of the customers. They have a long table against the wall, containers for take home portions, carry out dinners waiting to be picked up, etc. They have a cult following and all the faithful customers that dine there overlook that area. Once you get the drift of things, people come back again and again for their great food. Hub and I are regular customers and will continue to be. I really wanted to like China Bowl, but unfortunately our experience was pretty off-putting. My wife called in to place an order for four people--just a normal-sized takeout order--but the woman on the phone was really rude and kept saying things like "too much food" and even implied it was "for fat people." That was totally uncalled for. When I arrived to pick up the food, the same employee repeated that comment in person. It was just two bags of food for four people--nothing outrageous. To top it off, she insisted that I should tip for takeout, which just didn't make sense to me since I was only picking up my own order and didn't receive any extra service. Overall, the food might have been okay, but the attitude and treatment we got was really disappointing. Alright. Since I've moved to Taylor I've been looking for a consistently good Chinese place. I'm still looking. This one was average at best to me. Only thing I can say I loved was the egg rolls. They are made old school style(WITH BEANSPROUTS INSTEAD OF DARN CABBAGE) I ordered Almond chicken for me and Sweet and Sour for my husband. The gravy for the Almond Chicken was a NO for me. I did not care for that at all. I'm not use to almond chicken gravy being darker than me for one and the flavor was just off to me. Glad I asked for it on the side. I ended up buying my own sweet n sour sauce for my chicken. My husband said his Sweet n Sour was average as well. So this will be a one and done visit. This review is my 2nd for china bowl. Their food is amazing. I have never had a problem with my food experience or customer service while ordering over the phone. Yesterday I got in my car and said I want to EAT. I enter and there is 1 family eating which isn't unusual because I have been there 4 or 5 times previously and there is not a lot of sit in customers. I am seated order tea and soup. After that crickets the waitress looked at me once and never came back. Approximately 30 minutes later I gathered my things and decided to go pay for my bill. I was trying to be patient because I knew they must have had a lot of call in orders. I watched my waitress and another woman pick through pea pods. But I was hungry, confused and hangry. Once I got to the counter the waitress played deaf dumb and desolate as if that's all she thought I wanted and I asked her why would she give me a menu. Her response was do you want take out. Another younger woman said to give me my soup for free. I said no. But was only charged for my tea. I called today to order takeout because when we get a taste for something it remains on your mind. A woman answered and I heard another phone ringing and paused to see if I was going to be out on hold or not. The woman was most definitely the same woman from yesterday (rude tone and all), said do you want to order or not. I hung up and said don't engage because whatever is going on with this person has nothing to do with you but is going to cost this restaurant a dent in the pocket and reputation. Let's start by saying nice atmosphere when walking in to lobby to pick up carry out , the portion size was very large which was a plus got a quart of chicken chop suey and added shrimp and mushroom , also ordered quart of shrimp fried rice and 2 egg rolls , the chop suey was good and plentiful it just lacked flavor but the sprouts in it were crunchy like I like and not soggy , just the right amount of juice in it not drowned like some places do ,just like I said though not enough flavor , the shrimp fried rice you get a tonin that order packed full of shrimp and the container is overflowing , the egg rolls are pretty good but the hot mustard for the egg rolls is phenomenal ....the cashier was the sweetest lady and I appreciated her kindness ....now where I knocked off a star is price , while you get plenty of food it was almost $40 for that $37.99 to be exact I was floored I didn't expect that I was figuring more around $25-$28 for it since I added shrimp . Never diii reviews, but if you want a brutally honest one here goes. The sesame sauce is great / you can tell it's real chicken breast. Think I've had fake stuff so much, that it threw me off having to chew it a bit too much. Used to it being soft. Shrimp fried rice 20/10- texture, taste, tons of shrimp. Well I am more of a Japanese food guy than Chinese food. I really I am picky when it comes to Chinese food. This place I swear has only one waitress God bless her heart. She works very hard not just to make you feel at ease , but to make sure your food is ready. It's a little divey but it stays clean. I am used to the chicken and broccoli. But I am also fond of the Singapore noodles which I think makes me comeback to this place. Enjoy it with some won tong soup and some green tea. She wanted "good" egg rolls and I said, "I'll take you to a great place, that reminds me of Red Ruby." Where we always went growing up. The place was packed for dinner time and we had to park on a side street. The staff were almost speed walking in order to keep customers happy, one lady was waiting tables using a cart to deliver courses in timely manner to 3-4 tables at a time. I had my favorite chicken lo mein and my sister had cashew beef dinner combination, which included: egg roll, soup entree fried rice. You get hot tea and these crispy fried noodles for your soup, plus there's another type of fried snack sprinkled with cinnamon which are addictive. Our food was very tasty, hot and servings are plentiful to share or take home leftovers. The chicken and beef in or entrees were large and tender with wonderful flavors. I did not care for the Cathay House- I mean it was good. But it was too expensive in my opinion. But they closed and now theres the China Bowl in its place. I have been there 3 times in the span of a month- each in a different capacity. The first time I went on Cheap Date Night- We had Great food, and great Service, great prices. The food was fresh, and tasted amazing. We had Basic Almond Chicken and Sweet and Sour Chicken. The breading on both chickens were so light, and thin, and crispy, and flavorful. The chicken inside the batter was clearly white meat and actual pieces of meat not the fake stuff. The sauces were great homemade sauces that tasted fresh. The Sweet and Sour Sauce tasted like thickened Pineapple juice that was infused with bell peppers; with chunks of pineapple and bell peppers inside of the sauce. My only complaint is the fried rice is basic white rice that has been doused in soy sauce; no veggies inside or anything. The second time we got take out. The dinner for 2- includes Almond Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, White Rice, Soup. The hot and sour soup isnt the best ive ever had, so Eggdrop this time around, but it was very eggy, and not very asian flavored if that makes sense. Take out was quick, inexpensive, hot, and still fresh. The third time we went as a big group- around 6 of us. All ordered different things from General Tso's, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Almond Chicken, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, Curry Chicken, Steak Kow, Chicken and broccoli. Food was fast, delicious, fresh, and still pretty inexpensive. The wonton soup was delicious- i think this is what I will stick with The hot tea is really good for being bag tea and not loose leaf.
