Just updating my review to comment on the negative Nellies implying that the restaurant must be producing bad food because they don't offer sit down service anymore. This has been a carryover from COVID days, which is pretty common w/ Asian restaurants now and as it's been reported, this has been due largely to the racist rhetoric by morons in this country since then. I got the almond chicken and the meat was weird. Almost chewy. No choice of rice, as everyone gets a rice soaked in either soy sauce or some other condiment My husband hated the rice in his dish as well. It was supposed to be spicy, with pork. It wasn't spicy and the pork was unidentifiable. He could taste the onion, pineapple, corn and green pepper. The egg rolls were stuffed with mostly bean sprouts and the bottoms were soggy. I do love this place . I can't really give it anything above a 3 star due to the fact you can't eat in. The egg rolls are amazing and I love their food. Getting your food in foam containers spilling out in the bags suck. Also you never really get that fresh taste as it's sitting in a container on the ride home. It does change the flavor. For many years, Shong Hey restaurant was my favorite Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately, The last two times I went there over a year apart. There's a sign in the door that says it's carry out only. When a sit down restaurant becomes a carryout restaurant it's typically indicative of serious problems with the restaurant. Now, don't get me wrong, Ken likes Shong Hey, he just doesn't love it as much as I do. He does agree that the eggrolls are awesome. And he likes their version of General Tso's. This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant but they have gone down the tubes over the last year or so. The pieces of chicken in our general tso's and sweet and sour were huge which resulted in the chicken not being fully cooked. That has happened a few times in the past but seems to be the way they prepare the chicken now and the new normal. The egg rolls had also been burnt due to being left in the deep fryer too long. This is very unfortunate because their food has a wonderful flavor, however the chicken could be prepped with a little more care. Furthermore, I don't understand why Chinese restaurants are the only restaurants not open for dine in post covid. Stopped in for lunch today, my first time here. The restaurant is in the middle of a strip mall and doesn't really stand out. I was there about 1 p.m on a Saturday, and was the only person in the restaurant for most of the time I was there. Service was fast enough, but when I needed a minute to decide, the waitress stood there and waited rather than letting me peruse the menu. Prices were fair, about $9 for a plate of pepper steak, rice, small cup of egg drop soup and an egg roll. The soup was egg drop soup, hard to screw up, and hard to make amazing. The egg roll I'm sure was fine, but I didn't care for it. Though I don't care for any egg rolls so I can't really say it was bad. The pepper steak was average. Nothing stood out about it, but it wasn't bad either. Service was ok, they brought me my food and then left me alone. I was dining alone, so I was ok with that. I was convinced to come here while visiting a friend. While I am a lover of food I did not enjoy anything I ordered. My friend convinced me that it was wonderful but unfortunately I did not agree. They serve mountains of food but the taste is simple not there. The fried rice was brown, no flavor. The chicken was cut too large and not tasty. The veggies were cut too big as well. And my friends dish was in the same brown gravy. I ordered the Szechuan chicken with fried rice. And she ordered the sesame chicken with fried rice. The eggrolls were greasy and hard and tasted like old cabbage. I did not post any pictures because I was trying to get out of there as soon as possible. I love Panda Express. It's so yummy. And it has a decent selection and good quality for being what it is: Asian-American/Chinese fast food. Especially their orange chicken. I can't get enough and it pairs surprisingly well with their chow mien. Oh, wait. This is Shong Hey? Oh, my bad. The wife and I have been on the lookout for a chinese food place near us that doesn't taste like garbage and isn't Panda Express (my wife hates them both, despite my love for them both). So we walked in on a Tuesday night and I couldn't decide if I wanted the Orange Chicken or the Kung Pao Beef - the waitress (who was awesome by the way) said, "Why not both?" Great idea ... in theory. They didn't go well together, but the Kung Pao was worth the trip. The egg drop soup was par and the egg roll was pretty bomb, but I'm just glad I finally found a true chinese restaurant that serves decent entrees. My one gripe is everything north of the dining area: the public restrooms are bit yucky and we saw someone on staff eating in plain sight. I have grown up going to Shong Hey. I usually go in with my friend Jillian. It's kind of our tradition. We go there so often that the waitress usually just brings us our food. The food comes quickly and it's always in large portions. You will be eating it the next day unless you decide to have a midnight snack. I always get the sweet and sour chicken. It's great! Went here on a few people's recommendation and was just not wowed like they said I would be . Perhaps I'll try it again and get something different. I ordered the chicken and broccoli which was way different than I normally get it had big hunks of onion and carrot and was in a white gravy not brown like at most other places , it was just merely meh nothing to make me wanna come back until I tried my wife's almond chicken. I will say I was impressed highly with that because around me it's hard to find just the right gravy to go with a good breaded chicken usually if ones good the other isn't but not here they were a smashing hit I loved that ....egg rolls I could smash a few they were pretty good and their hot oil was a nice surprise as well .
