I decided to revisit Hawaiian Sun BBQ because The Homie and his friends had a satisfying meal here after a long road trip and hike. I had laulau elsewhere recently, so I was interested in trying their version for comparison. Last laulau ordered here was in 2018! We took 99N all the way to Everett Mall Way to avoid the I-5 commute traffic (4/23/26). We were immediately seated and provided menus & ice water. Pretty much the same interior, no overhead music, and straightforward table service. There were three others dining onsite, but also later overheard phone orders taken followed with brisk takeout pickups. They also have the capacity for catering with product, prices, and serving pan sizes posted on the wall. The Homie ordered the loco moco with overeasy eggs, plus their standard cheeseburger. He was pretty happy with the outcome. Consistent to his previous experience, but also took note of the quality and reasonable cost for the cheeseburger. I opted for the laulau plate which came with the requisite two scoops steamed rice and one scoop mac (Hawaiian style macaroni salad) with a sizeable laulau. I unwrapped the outer ti leaves and cut into the taro leaves (steamed like spinach) to reveal succulent pork and tender butterfish inside. This was great with a little added shoyu. Spot on delicious! The ice water also hit the spot. Perfectly chilled without any aftertaste from a pitcher. None of that tepid water in a stoppered top glass bottle or carafe. Refreshing! This has been a favorite place for many years. The location is in an older strip mall and not glamorous. But the food here is always good and the service has always been great. The menu is pretty diverse with many selections available. They also have a catering menu available for parties or get together. The pricing is very reasonable for both the retail and catering. One of the favorites is to order Spam Musubi to go and pick up for local sporting events. This is definitely a place to find and try. It might become one of your new places to frequent. read more

Been coming here for years and this place have never disappointed. Mind you it is sort of a hole-in-the-wall kind of joint and not one of the overhyped fancy foo foo places. One to the best part, the food! 1) Mochiko chicken - this is a staple and I always get this. Crispy, juice, sweet and a little spicy. What more can you ask. 2) Ox tail noodle soup - so good and the ox tails is fork tender. 3) locomoco/mochiko chicken combo - if you cannot decide between a couple options get a combo and get a bit of both! Who does not like a good ol locomoco? Flavored beef , overeasy egg , rice , gravy 4) Kailua Pork - get it with the cabbage. So good, savory and tender. Definitely a classic. Yelpers lead us to this cute mom & pop Hawaiian spot today, and it did not disappoint! We ordered the BBQ combo, katsu chicken, and Huli Huli chicken. Food came out quickly and tasted great, identical to the authentic Hawaiian food I've gotten at places the locals eat at in the islands. Portions were generous, katsu was perfectly fried and not greasy, and house teriyaki sauce was excellent. I wish they had fountain sodas instead of cans. Prices were great, and you can get a side of most anything they offer - Katsu was less than $4! It seemed to be a two-man show with one cook and one server. It did get busy as we ate, so getting our bill was a bit challenging in the end. The restaurant was clean, parking was easy, and service was great. Looking forward to returning again soon! read more

I've eaten here many times since my original 2010 review. In fact we just ate there last weekend and with my last review of Kona Kitchen's Loco Moco, I can honestly say I prefer Hawaiian Sun B.B.Q.'s Loco Moco. for the following reasons: 1. The price is right. 2. Made perfect. The protein to carb ratio is spot on. In other words, two patties, two eggs, smothered in gravy and the perfect amount of rice. 3. Side of Hawaiian Mac...part of the meal...not extra $. 4. Just tasted damn good! You get a chance to visit I would also recommend their Mochiko Chicken, their Short Ribs and the Meat Jun. I also love their musubi which comes in spam or chicken and wrapped in cellophane, just like the ones sold in any mini-mart on the islands. But honestly, everything I've ever had there has been good and the reason I keep coming back is food like that is what I would consider "comfort" food, and they do it right. The place ain't fancy, in fact it's one of those "Hole in the Wall" kinda places in a strip mall, but some of the best "local" food I've eaten in Hawaii and here in Washington are "Hole in the Wall" kinda places. What do you do when you are hungry and in Everett? Look up restaurants on Yelp and find one that'll sate your craving. Bonus: plenty of parking here too! The dining area is not open for customers because of Covid but the day was pleasant enough for some takeaway in the sunshine. I went with the combo plate with chicken katsu and loco moco, plus an order of the turon for dessert. The katsu was crisp and tasty, with a slightly sweet dipping sauce. The loco moco was good and the gravy not overly salty. I really liked the hamburger patty and gravy combination = mmm, perfect! I could not eat everything if I wanted room for my banana lumpia and I was determined to enjoy that while it was still warm. I had a bite of the macaroni salad and opted to pass on finishing that. I agree with a couple Yelpers, that stuff was bland. If I'm in the area next time, I'll try out some of their other options. Huli Huli tastes like a mix of teriyaki and Sriracha mixed together. Mochiko was not like any I've had before and was extremely fatty inside (see pic). Inside looks like you just walked into a teriyaki shop with Asian painting on wall and Asian decor. Also ran by Asians (no offense but when I go to Hawaiian I expect at least some sort of Hawaiian there lol. Spam Musubi was the closest thing to being authentic. There was an interesting smell in restaurant. I couldn't place it but it wasn't good. We got musubi, a mini loco moco, and chicken katsu. The musubi was good. The loco moco and katsu were...ok. The loco moco gravy was a strange tan color and not the traditional brown gravy. The chicken katsu was thin, dry, and an unappealing light colored panko, though the sauce has a tiny bit of spice to it which was pleasant. The two sides of mac salad were in containers with lids that didn't actually fit, so they were upside down and the contents completely emptied into the bag. The person who helped us was friendly enough. The food came out quickly. If you're hoping for food that is close to authentic Hawaiian you're not going to find it here. read more

When I got home, my food was still warm, and my order was complete Despite the surly treatment at the restaurant, it was totally worth it as I so enjoyed every morsel of that food. Seriously, the Mochiko chicken was beautifully crispy, and the Loco Moco had the most perfectly cooked egg, and the hamburger patty was so tender. Our food was undercooked and tough, and even if the food was cooked all the way, I would still rate this place as low tier. Our first impressions of the place were already bad as the lady in the front was extremely rude and short with us. My family had lived in Hawaii for nearly 15+ years and I know what good quality Hawaiian food is supposed to be like. I don't how this place gets good reviews with this quality of food. Finding this spot was a happy accident that saved my hunger. What stood out here were a couple items that I've never seen in an Islander restaurant are the Meat Jun and Mochiko Chicken. The Meat Jun is thin slices of marinated beef beef in a egg batter served with their own jun sauce. This felt perfect as it was the first meal I had in the day and the eggs felt like a proper breakfast. The Mochiko Chicken is deep fried boneless chicken coated with mochi powder also served with its own sauce. That was some really crispy chicken and it was pretty juicy as well. The parking lot was almost packed as we came into the plaza around lunch time, but the restaurant was not busy. Don't expect in your face friendly service, it's a mom and pop shop and we only saw an older Asian lady who might be the owner. We stopped in for lunch today and our experience was great. The service was fast and really friendly. Our server made sure we had everything we needed. And the chicken was beyond delicious. We had the huli huli chicken, and whatever sauce they use is just so good. The chicken itself was tender and flavorful. I also loved the rice, which is something many might not think much of, but rice is my favorite food and I can appreciate the way they cooked it! It was soft and not dry at all. The macaroni salad was also very good, but that's a must for a Hawaiian BBQ place. The best part was that the prices were reasonable and they give good portions. I ordered the mini huli huli chicken plate, and that was just the right amount of food for me. My husband ordered the large plate, and he found it to be very filling, which is saying something because he eats a lot. We will definitely stop here again the next time we're in Everett! read more
