Returned to Hot Iron after not having gone in a while. It was a Saturday night, so the staff seemed a little more tired from the nonstop, but they did amazing nonetheless. I have lived within walking distance of Hot Iron since 2009. I've walked by 100s of times. My husband and I have mentioned to each other dozens of times that we should try it someday. I have no idea why last night was the night. It was a Friday, we walked in and the place was poppin'. We did not have any negative service staff experiences as mentioned in other recent reviews. As a matter of fact, the kid who seated us was informed that this was our first visit and he let us know how everything worked. Like most Mongolian grills, you start with a buffet style bar full of noodles, veggies, and various meats and sauces. They have patrons put on plastic gloves for sanitary reasons, which I appreciated. They had three or four different kinds of noodles, all kinds of veggies, shrimp, crab, tofu, chicken, pork, beef, and more. I did notice that the meats were frozen and a little difficult to get apart, but I think that was on purpose for food safety - also reassuring. At the end of the line, they had various sauces that you could add to your bowl, and we noticed that people who use those had less issues with their noodles sticking to the grill. It was hard to know just how much sauce to add, so we just went for it and it turned out OK. Everything is cooked on the same grill so while there's a ton of vegetarian and vegan choices, it will likely get cooked next to entrées that contain meat. Also, I'm not sure this is the place for people with nut allergies. I am removing one star because the buffet area did get pretty messy at this busy time. Food that didn't make it into people's bowls was all over the counter that you slide your down and on the floor. The grill counter was sticky. They seemed to have plenty of staff - It would've been nice to see a dedicated staff member cleaning that up and enforcing the gloves. We did watch one patron only put on ONE glove, and he used that hand to serve himself. He used his BARE hand to push the raw meat down into his bowl several times so he could fit more items in it, and then use that same hand to touch other surfaces. That's really unacceptable (and disgusting) and that patron should've known better, but this is where I feel a buffet attendant would've been extremely helpful. After the buffet, you set your bowl on a counter that surrounds the grill and wait for your turn as you watch the chefs cook your meal. Once cooked, you have the choice of brown or white rice and multiple other sauces. You also have a choice of miso soup or egg drop soup (both were fine but average IMO). It is a LOT of food for the price. You are allowed to take home leftovers if you get one bowl, but if you go back a second time, you are not allowed to take home leftovers - which feels reasonable since it's the same price. Our table was also a bit sticky so that part could use improvement, but we got checked on at least three times and got our drinks refilled. Two large meals and a Diet Coke before tip was $42. I felt like that was - good price for the amount of food we received. I chose the Mongolian sauce and thought it was a very nice choice. They also had sweet-and-sour, mushroom sauce, coconut curry (which I tasted, it reminded me of Indian Korma), Teriyaki, and a few other others, as well as as Sriracha and other hot sauces. They have sesame and peanut sprinklers as well. Overall, we thought everything was really good other than the stated cleanliness issues. We did not notice any safety issues with the actual handling of our food, but just the general cleanliness of the restaurant could use some improvement. One more thing - there is a cash tip jar at the grill. I really wish I had known that because I would've brought cash to tip with instead of adding it to my bill at the end. The food is good and veggie options were plenty. They also have gloves for you to wear if you are worried about germs when serving yourself ingredients. The food is fair quality, and they cook it on the iron pretty well. If you don't like the *flavor* it's really your own fault since you come up with the ingredients including the sauce. There really is no 'service' here.. you get seated at a table but that's kinda it. They are nice though! I do feel like they upped their prices recently, $20/person can be worth it if you eat a lot of meat but if you're more veggie based like myself, the price is getting a little steep. We have been visiting Hot Iron for a while now. It is one of our favorite places to go on Sunday Date nights and/or places to bring our friends and family. We were sad when our regular spot closed down in Mukilteo, but found this spot and it is even better. We usually will stop by the Northern before for a couple drinks and then come here for food. This place is a great bang for your buck. Even when you get takeout orders they fill your dish full! There are 2 dine in option 1. All you can eat styler where you can dine in and go back for multiple servings (1 bowl at a time), but you can not take any home. or 2. Dine in and take home. For this second option you can not go back for seconds. I usually skip the noodles and pack my bowl with my favorite veggies and meat, and have rice as my carb. This way I am able to fill my bowl with more meat and veggies. We usually go at about 3-4pm on Sundays and tend to beat the rush. The Staff is very friendly and accommodating and it is fun the see the food cooked right in front of you. I do suggest that if you have a group where one person have a smaller bowl to have then go first so that theirs has a lesser chance of burning. They usually cook and serve in order and may lessen the risk the smaller portion staying on longer than needed. Looking for a good bang for your buck meal? Well Mongolian grill food can satisfy that here. All you can eat for a flat fee. Fill a bowl or two with all the ingredients you want in your meal from the food bar and watch the cooks grill your food on a giant iron grill. You can also get a side of rice and add additional sauce to your plate. Afterwards, just go back for seconds or thirds! They have 3 options of noodles, a variety of meats, and a variety of veggies. The meat usually is sliced up and frozen. So it's a bit of a pain to grab. You'll be lucky to see them loose in the tray. Veggies seem a bit frozen too or canned, at least that's what I've noticed with the carrots. It's hard to tell how much sauce the food needs. I feel like no matter how much I add on to it, it never seems enough. So I recommend adding a good amount. I think it's preferred to have the noodles in a separate bowl cause when I was watching the cooks do their thing, they usually put the meat on the grill first, then the veggies, and then they cook the noodles last to not over cook them. It takes a good 3-5 minutes for the food to be done. They plate it up for you and then you can add a side of rice and any additional condiments you want afterwards. In my opinion Mongolian grill places like this usually taste all the same to me no matter how you season things. I like hot iron though because they have curry sauce as an added condiment which I like a lot. So many combinations you can have your food. Go back for more and have fun figuring out what you like! We were in the area and wanted to grab dinner so stop by this place. We ordered the deluxe which gives you the options of different noodles, 4 types of protein, and as many fillings as you want. We got the rice noodle, with fish, shrimp, tofu and chicken. We basically all the veggies that was available and added garlic broth with chili. We also added a mushroom sauce, coconut curry sauce and Mongolian chili sauce on the side. In addition, we got a white rice on the side too. They definitely did not skimp on the proteins. Just the shrimp alone, we got 8 generous size pieces!!! My critique, the mushroom sauce is like milk and I can barely taste the garlic. Other than that, portion is really good and it fed 2 people for under $20. I can definitely see myself coming back here. read more

I traveled about 2 hours from olympia/steamboat island to lynnwood, primarily for 2 reasons. A pizza place I remembered was great here, and an all you can eat mongolian grill nearby (not many places that have that sadly). I was really dissapointed. I get a bowl with noodles/beef/mushrooms/peppers and put the sauces on it, but the sauces looked all watered down and I was worried it wouldn't have much flavor. I was very right, the sauce added nothing to the flavor and it was bland, I tried putting some teriyaki sauce and chili sauce they had seperate on it, but that didn't really work. I forced myself to eat that plate so I could try another bowl, just with WAY less in it, so there would be more sauce to well everything ratio. Maybe that would help. It didn't and I didn't even eat the second bowl, I just paid and left. I later went to best of Changdoe a chinese place nearby and the beef chowmein was WAY better, and less than half the price. I would not recomend hot iron to anyone looking for mongolian bbq, or at least if you go, bring your own sauce. That might have helped but the noodles and beef was a bit burnt as well, and not the best quality, I honestly think you are better off just making it at home yourself (which is sadly my ownly option in Olympia). I gave it two stars because the service was nice and I did not get sick from the food (and I hate saying negative things about places). Still I feel I should mention something since there are so few mongolian bbq places and others may travel a long distance to try one...in this case it really is not worth the travel. read more

This must be my favorite restaurant as it is what I have missed most during the covid pandemic. I thought about it so often, yet never managed to go. I was worried that take out wouldn't be the same, or that rules/restrictions would keep me from enjoying the delicious taste I crave. I kept putting it off, but then finally did some research and found out exactly what would be different and decided to give it a shot. Plus I knew I really need to get out and support my favorite place if I still want them to be around when this is all over. It's been a few weeks now, as it was back when dine it was allowed, but the main change besides masks and social distancing, is that you no longer walk down the line and scoop your food yourself. Instead you fill out a form, marking what you want, including what sauces and the staff gathers the items and then they are cooked and brought to your table without you having to move. This actually worked out really well, what I hate about Mongolian grill (although just the tiniest bit) is that my hands get all sticky and gross from touching the scooping spoons, this is no longer a problem. My partner also convinced me that just marking the boxes would not be good enough to get my Mongolian grill exactly the way I like it (with a ton of olives, cilantro and garlic), but it was easy enough to mark that you wanted extra of some items and less of others. Of course it turned out delicious and I was kicking myself for not having been eating here weekly the whole time. Now we are back to another period of no dine in allowed and I am still dreaming of my favorite meal. I think it's about time to finally try the take out. read more

This was our go to spot at least 1 to 2 times a week due to the great food and quick service. This was the 2nd time i had a child worker get an attitude with me due to me using 2 bowls. Now i have spoken to the owner many times before as i like spinach as i am on a paleo diet so no noodles. she tells me all the time stop using 1 bowl and making a mess. (i try really hard but spinach doesn't compact when raw) I was approached and grabbed by a child worker who yelled at me for having 2 bowls, I said to him look i have permission he says I dont give a sh**, I said what are you going to charge me for 2 meals come on. I said i can get it in one bowl but i don't want to make a mess and the rest of the items roll off. We finished our meal and this child charged myself and my wife for 3 meals. I objected to him i ven apologized and tried to make him realize this was and has been approved many times before and he said I DONT FUC**** care! i asked for my money back he said NO! i asked for the owner and he said SHE DONT SPEAK ENGLISH SO NO YOU CANT TALK TO HER. So little buddy. you will learn in your lifetime even though customers may not be right, they usually always are. My main objective now is to send negative reviews to every single site to make sure everyone i know in person and everyone online knows what type of service they will get with these silly kids working there. Ready Set Terrible. After a long day of househunting we realize we had any and anything at all so we decided to go and give hot iron a try as we tend to like Mongolian grill places because we are vegetarian. This place however was gross. By that I mean frozen sticky tack down gummy noodles that you couldn't get out of the serving trays,. Vegetable trays with slopped chunks of meat in them. Dirty sticky sauce bottles, countertops, and dining tables. Staff was very loud yelling about changing the tv so they could watch the game, yelling about not getting a break even though the place was closing in less than 20 minutes. Great place to customize your own meal! The food bar, despite sometimes being a little messy from customers who can't get the food into the bowl, is always stocked with fresh ingredients. There are great options and sometimes the items will rotate depending on the time of day, but the staples are always there. Then you get to watch your food being cooked in front of you. The chefs seem to have different cooking styles, as some use water to help steam the food while others can overcrowd the grill and overchop the noodles and meats so you get a hash instead of a stir fry. The waitstaff are generally friendly but don't always go out of their way to help you. They get you drinks and clean your table but that's about it, and I don't expect much anyways. 5 stars because I've never walked away feeling hungry or disappointed in my meal. read more

I was really craving Mongolian Grill but unsure how or if they were even open during the pandemic. I was weary at first so I decided to drive by and take a peek. Their set up was great! There's a table outside with slips of paper to write down what you want and then you go inside to pay. Everything is blocked off except the register. They give TONS of food. We have ate at this place multiple times now and we always enjoy coming in here. The lady who sits you is always very friendly and nice. The food is always great....maybe that's because YOU get to pick out exactly what you want to eat. It can take awhile to get your food cooked when it's busy, but that's because they cook it right in front of you. It's worth the wait, you get your plate nice and hot and can chow down right away. We did see the cook take his hat off, run his hands through his hair, sneeze into a napkin and only put a squirt of sanitizer on his hands instead of washing them. That was pretty gross to see and think he touches the plates when he serves you. Overall we enjoy this place and never leave hungry. It's worth stopping in and trying it out. read more

So, I went here with a friend who loves Mongolian grills. This is a inexpensive place to get dinner especially since there is a coupon for 50% off your second entree if you check in on yelp. However, my goal was to maximize the amount of food I could pack into my bowl since I wasn't planning on going for all you can eat rather than go for the option to take home leftovers but you can only go around once. Pro: over 8 sauces/oil to choose from before and after cooking. You also have the option to bring your leftovers home if you decide to only go to the buffet once and not multiple times Con: 1) Service was sparse. There were only two waitresses to wait on the whole room and check people in. 2) Their beef slices were in a meat block where I struggled to pull out slices of beef. My beef slices were in shreds because they were frozen together. One worker had to break it into blocks. Some of the meat had freezer burn as seen by my pictures. I even had to take a pic of the beef block that was stuck together. Goal 1: maximize the amount of the possible most expensive ingredient, beef. I had achieved this. Oddly the cheaper ingredients like pork and chicken didn't have this block problem. 3) When I got to the cooking station, the cook accidentally dropped a chunk as big as a snowball into the trash area. I asked to go back to the buffet to get a chunk to replace the chunk that was thrown away and they let me. Only later was I told by the waitress I could pack my leftovers this once because I went back twice because someone said only a piece of my beef fell in the trash. The piece was as big as a snowball which is at least 5 to 6 pieces, all waddled up in a beef iceball. Lesson learned, if the cooks drop some of your food in the trash, don't bother to go back to replace it because they're expecting you to not bring leftovers home. 4) My beef was over cooked and tough like beef jerky, however I do have enough to last me the whole week for only 11.50. From what I have learned, this place has cheap cuts of beef and it is a hit miss if yours will turn out ok. My friend's was doused in over 15 ladles of sauce on her chicken one so hers was very sweet and sour because she did that and turned out ok. I would need to shower my beef with sauces to mask the toughness and poor quality, why would I want to pay for overdone meat in the first place?? 5) The dessert which is only offered for dinner is literally a Costco sampler cup of vanilla soft serve. And no it is not self serve. Rather I had to walk up to a waitress and ask for it. Not a fan, and I will revive my beef slices in some soup, possibly Korean tofu soup. read more

I came here for lunch with my 10 year old. We were so excited to be able to sit down in a restaurant again. Of course they had to modify their typical choose-your-own ingredients and bring-bowl-to-the-grill routine, but I like how they improvised. Upon walking in to the sparkling clean restaurant, there was a giant bottle of hand sanitizer sitting on a stool by the door. We each took a pump and sanitized our hands. I hope that effort doesn't stop when we're in Phase 4. I love the idea of everyone having clean hands before they sit down for a meal. All employees were wearing masks and gloves. I really felt bad for the cook who had to work over a hot grill all day with a mask on. That must be miserable. The waitress brought us slips to check off what ingredients we wanted in our bowl: noodles, protein, veggies, rice, sauces. Then she filled the bowls herself and gave them to the cook to fry up on the grill. It was delicious. Since I had never been here before, it would have helped to have descriptions or pictures of the sauces or recommendations for popular sauce combos to try. The waitress did ask if I wanted extra sauce after I tried my dish which I really appreciated. An extra teriyaki sauce was just right. The portions are huge. I'd love to see a half portion option and associated pricing. That said, the pricing was probably fair for such large portions and for all the extra hoops this restaurant is having to jump through to serve its patrons. At the end we had to pay at the cash register which is right next to the front door so there is no way to socially distance as people are entering. I'd love to see them add a pay at the table option just to avoid that scenario. All in all I applaud this restaurant for doing their best to serve the public. It certainly doesn't look easy and I am very appreciative of the hardworking staff who made my lunch date with my daughter possible. read more

Not the most glamorous setting but I've always been treated with respect upon entering. While I haven't been in years, I went in recently and all employees were attentive and helpful. My daughter was stoked to watch the chef cook, but as she's 4 years old she couldn't see over the counter without my help. Without hesitation the guy working the door ran over and grabbed a chair for her to stand on so she could see. Again, not the most glamorous dining, but the food was fresh and delicious and the people were kind. It was clean and calm. Can't complain. :) read more

I'd give it zero stars if I could. The only saving grace was the server was very nice. I was appalled by the food, honestly how do you mess up Mongolian bbq??? The noodles were so old and dried out, because of covid you can't make your own. They served me shrimp with the shells on which I would expect at a crab shack but not in my noodles which I had to pick out and then peel the shells off. The sauces have very little flavor the vegetables were definitely expired and on their last legs but yet we're still thrown in. Extremely disorganized, dirty and disappointing. The layout is packed and confusing. They seemed really understaffed - two people working all of the tables. The ingredient bar was messy and seemed unsanitary. There was no soap or paper towels in the restroom. Lots of signs to warn you about one bowl vs all you can eat rules but no comprehensive list of ingredients or suggested combinations like other Mongolian grills. $36 for two people to eat one bowl at dinner. read more
