Great selection of surf and SPB, the only place we found that offers the Waldon brand. Staff are actual surfers and watermen, and give good recommendation to buy the right board. I had an amazing private windsurfing lesson here and would highly recommend it to anyone trying to get better. I learned to windsurf as part of a school club so I was completely self taught and because of this I was missing some key skills that I wouldn't have learned without professional help. The instructor helped me learned how to tack and gybe, and how to do them much more efficiently without losing much speed. The instructor was extremely friendly and helpful and the gear they provided you with was great. The board was almost brand new and the sails were in great condition. Additionally they provide a two way radio so the instructor can give you real time instructions and feedback which I really loved and helped me learn much faster. They are a locally owned shop that gives back to the community and they are passionate about teaching everyone to be stewards of our shared beaches and environment. We had an AMAZING experience at their keiki Watersports clinic! The day started off with everyone meeting at the shop...plenty of time to see their selection & everything they offer. Next was an info session for everyone about ocean safety; both for ourselves and for the sea life & beach preservation. We then met the crew at the canal where the gear was set up and waiting for us. The instructors were INCREDIBLE! So patient & well informed! They really took their time to educate and encourage our keiki. My (8 year old) son had a blast kayaking, windsurfing & getting on the SUP. We will definitely be returning for additional classes! read more

This is place is ok at best. IMO. I was in the market for a 9-0 Torq longboard for my son. I called to see if they had what I was looking for in stock and got no answer, on the recording it says that you can text a question to a different number and they'll text you back with and answer to your inquiry. Well, I got no response from that either, I ended up calling later again and got an answer that they do have what I was looking for with just one left. Made the trip to Kailua, when I entered the store there were three workers there, not one hello, or let us know if you need anything. So approached one of them ( it seemed like a family btw), told them what I was there for and things moved forward from there. I checked out the board everything looked ok, I asked them if they had the cord for leash plug/ leash? They said it's $2 for it. I was like " what?" I've bought WELL over a dozen longboards in my life and have never been charged for that, all other places just automatically put that ok for you! THEN the lady who worked there ( Arlene) tried to hustle me to buy wax, again, when you spends hundreds of dollars on a board most places just throw in one or two bars of wax for free. I later found out that I paid more here for this board than other places ( it just happened to be the only place I could find it 2 days before Xmas). So on top the higher prices, they're weren't that all friendly and they tried to nickel and dime me for whatever they feel I needed. read more

Bucket list wish to learn to windsurf. Took a 2 hour private with Sveni on -2/16/22. First time on a board and it was out of this world fantastic. Great teacher, great equipment, great experience. First time standing took a backward spill. But it's water. Second time standing (maybe 5 minutes later) and stability was confirmed. Private was the way to go. Terrific attention to positioning and jibing or coming about from a caring professional. Hawaiian Water Sports provided a wonderful experience in the early morning hours while the bay was calm. this is fun. read more

First time kayaking in Hawaii and came across this place on Groupon. They are about 1.5 miles to the Kailua beach. You MUST make a reservation to ensure you have kayaks upon arrival. Upon arrival, you'll sign a waiver and they will make recommendations how to launch and where to launch your kayaks on the beach. They will play a 3 minute video on safety in the ocean, then you'll be on your way. Note, it costs an additional $10 to have the racks mounted to the car (not included with Groupon). Their staff will help you mount everything on your car and take it off when you return. At most, you can only fit TWO kayaks on your car rooftop at a time, so you might need to make multiple rounds if you have more (we had Jeep). Parking is TIGHT so show up early. read more

The thing I like best is the owner Josh does all the water sports and is very knowledgeable so you can bounce your questions and concerns off him and he has good recommendations. They can also special order equipment that is not in stock at their shop, so no matter what your water sports equipment need is they can probably get it. I would highly recommend to GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. The prices might appear cheaper to rent here, but it's just not worth the hassle and the rude attitude from all the workers here. [[ RETURNING THE KAYAKS ]] When we came to return the kayaks, the workers didn't lift a finger to remove our kayaks. They also said with a very rude tone, that if the kayaks are sandy that we have to clean them off before returning them, or else they would charge us a $10 cleaning fee for each kayak. We asked them where do we rinse them off at, the workers response was 'See where all the sand is over there? Yeah there is a hose over there.' Like seriously people? What is with your attitude? Side Note: I noticed as reading other yelpers reviews for this place that some people said stuff like they think others are 'cooking the Yelp Reviews.' Let me be clear, I wrote over 300 reviews and left maybe 13 companies with 1 star. The fact that a company has many negative reviews should honestly tell you something about them. I'm sure this company has its good and bad days with people, but my experience here was just horrible and insulting as a paying customer. Book online to get a huge discount! We got a 2 person kayak for 4 hours, for $39...which includes life vests, dry bag, backrests. I've checked other places, and dry bag and bag rests all cost extra. I booked the night before our trip, when we got there, my booking didn't go through somehow....but the guy there was nice enough to give it to me at the internet rate anyway. Once you book it at the store, you go straight to the beach to pick up your kayak by the bridge. You drop it off there too. Very convenient! Super friendly staff and very helpful! I rented a beginner board and Hotsails 5-0 sail for windsurfing with a 1 and 1/2 private lesson. Josh at the store was extremely friendly and helpful and he recommended that we take 2 of the "Com" helmets with us so that my instructor could talk to me while I was far out in the water. That was a great suggestion as the helmet was very light and comfortable and the reception amazingly clear. I wouldn't want to go without the helmet during a lesson ever again! My 20-yr-old instructor, Collin, was the best! His patience and maturity was far beyond his years and he gave instruction in a way that was easy to understand and follow. I was very impressed with this young man and enjoyed talking to him about all the things he was doing. Collin really has it together and I don't doubt that he will excel at whatever he puts his mind to! I had not windsurfed in over 20 yrs (moved away from Oahu and had 2 kids in the mean time). Wind was about 10 knots and good for learning but still enough to move the board. Amazingly, with Collin's directions, I uphauled and sailed away on my first try and jibed on my 2nd try. Funny - because that was about how far I had gotten 20 yrs ago - and it was like just picking up where I left off! Now I know I can still enjoy a watersport while my now college-age kids are out surfing at Flat Island! I don't feel quite so old anymore! read more

8.17.10: Hawaiian Watersports, how come no one mentioned that it was cheaper to purchase the rental online? Sheez, com' on yelp. Ha ha. Well they did have good ratings overall so that was nice. I have never kayak before and I wished I had better instructions, instead seemed like I have to make mistakes before understanding what I'm suppose to do. Oh well now I know. The place was not too expensive, we had to rent the kayak for four hours. We went to the park where the dirty water was to get the kayak. The guy with the truck pretty much doesn't seem to care about anything except for making sure he got all the paper work. He would start to try to explain something and then in the middle he stop and say you got it yah? You will get it. And stops. Anyhow it was pretty quick to get the kayak and not any hassels. So overall it was cool and they gave us a drybag in case we want to put our clothes or anything we don't want to get wet in there.. so I guess four stars..maybe more like 3.5... read more

These guys (and gals) are awesome! Their prices are very reasonable, and their customer service is great. I am in the market for a SUP. Went there because I live in Kaneohe, and wanted to see what they had, and determine if I wanted to do business with them. I was aware that they do rentals, and as I didn't know what I wanted, wanted to rent some boards to get a feel for the sport. The first time I went in, I was with my pops. They were very informative, suggested that I rent a board to get a feel for the sport, and I left their shop feeling like I wanted to do business with them... SO I CAME BACK... Rented a board. BUT... before I rented, I was advised that wind was high, and SUP is no fun in high wind. I almost called it a wash. I asked where to go, and they said avoid east side, and north shore. So I decided to give it a go. Good advice. Suggested that I go to Ala Moana. So I did. East side was super windy, and north shore was big surf with winds. Ala Moana was very calm, with some wind, but that was good, cuz I got to experience wind. They recommended a board for me that was a lot of fun. I returned the board early, and they asked if I wanted to take another board out, as I was trying to figure out what kind of board I wanted to purchase. Took another board to the rivermouth at no charge (because i elected to rent all day). All I have to say, is in one day, I was able to determine the size and style of board that I want to buy thanks to these guys. They dont pressure you into buying their stuff, and are totally cool. They were even super helpful in helping me try to make some old Thule racks that were missing clamps work. These guys are proper. They're knowledgeable, they care, and theyre local. Check them out. My wife and I took kiteboarding lessons here last week. I do not feel comfortable recommending Hawaiian WaterSports to others because proper safety standards were not followed. There were also other non-safety issues that were adequately resolved during the lessons. The big problem: no knife to cut lines in emergency. A basic safety standard when kiting is to have a knife to cut the kite lines in an emergency. The initial setup provided did not include a knife. When I asked about using one, the instructor bullied me and indicated they aren't necessary. I don't know anyone who kites without a knife. If the lines got wrapped around you and you didn't have a knife, your life would be endangered. After I refused to continue the lesson, a knife was provided. However, I discovered after the lesson that my wife was not provided a knife. Other issues that were resolved during the lesson were not being present on time, not having gear setup on time, and not having appropriately sized gear. As Hawaiian WaterSports was not following - or teaching - basic kite safety. I do not recommend that anyone take kite lessons here. read more

Was looking for a bodyboard better than the Costco board that I own which is very flimsy and was starting to fall apart. Hawaiian water sports has all the good stuff from kayaks, water gear, etc. They have a special bodyboard combo where you buy a board and leash you get a pair of free fins. Good ones too which I ended up getting the vipers. Yes there are other shops but this one was convenient which they had the size board I needed and variety to choose from. Great customer service. I took my son and his friend paddleboarding. As I was unfamiliar with the area, they were very helpful in letting me know a safe area for beginners. They helped us load up the boards and were very encouraging to my son's friend who was a little nervous. When we returned the boards, I inquired about kayak paddles. Great Windward Kayaking with Pa'ani Wai Hawai'i! A wonderful and fun excursion! We spent an amazing afternoon on the water paddling with Keona during our guided kayak tour from Kailua Bay, past Flat Island and Lanikai Beach, on to Mokulua Nui Island, and back. She pointed out features of the local environment and conservation methods used to preserve the beaches, as well as highlights of the expansive history from the surrounding community. The views were truly amazing and this is a great way to see the area! Keona also shared insights, with a warm and energetic attitude, about personal preferences for music, restaurants, and cultural sites around Oahu which later on we found to be on the mark! Everyone with Pa'ani Wai Hawai'i and Hawaiian Watersports was friendly and professional, and the equipment was top notch. Would definitely book again! read more

I rented two kayaks (1 single and 1 double) and everything was as advertised. I booked directly through them instead of going through Groupon. The staff helped us get the kayaks on to our SUV as they explained how to do it ourselves at the beach. We received backrests and a dry bag free of charge. Most other places advertised these but charged for them. They explained to us where we should park and how long it would take us to get to the Mokes and back. The staff was friendly and the prices were much lower than the other places that we looked into. Overall, we had a great experience! read more

Fantastic! We rented for a day, and the following day I got myself a kiteboarding lesson. I definitely recommend the full three hour lesson, and what progress i made! Josh was awesome, very quick and to the point, but in a way that was never intimidating. My friend and I decided last minute to kayak while we were vacationing and I called around and stumbled upon a Groupon for this place to see f they had availability. As other reviewers mention, you need to book in advance 24 hours if you buy the Groupon however they were able to give us the same Groupon price for the day of which was great for us. They also have the same pricing on their website too. We had to rent roof racks (which look like two rectangular cushion foams) $10 to transport the kayaks to the beach or kayak launching point. I deducted a star for the inconvenience of having to load it, park, carry it over to the beach then bring it back. If you don't have strong upper body, I can see lifting the kayak onto your car roof being a challenge. One of the guys helped us get it into our SUV and explained the rest of directions. Luckily because we were in the launch area he mentioned, we knew what he was talking about. The water wasn't too choppy but we still got a little nauseous padding all the way to and from the beach sanctuary island. For a full days worth of $39 double kayak and $10 roof rental, it was a good deal although we didn't take full advantage of the hours. I'd recommend this place if you don't mind the transporting to and from. read more
