Crazy luck--Been dealing with injuries for sometime as I busted my sesamoid and more, but found this gym which was approved by my podiatrist who also trained here before. They've been awesome with my injuries, making workouts feel like rehab. If you're looking for a gym to kickstart the new year, look no further! This review is long overdue and I've been going since Dec 2019. I moved to San Ramon 3 years ago and checked out all sorts of gyms in the area (crossfit, HIIT, cross training, Pilates, etc.) and landed on HAWC. Not only was it for the programming, Spartan race training and instructors but also the COMMUNITY. Not a lot of gyms that I've gone to have not made me feel very welcome - almost like family especially if you're working out at the gym consistently and seeing the same group of people each day. There's social events outside the gym where we can see each other in non-workout clothes, and we participate in local competitions or spartan races together. The support and community is strong - it's really awesome. Egos are left outside the door and it's all about supporting, encouraging and motivating each other. You compete against yourself. Why Hawc is so unique is because of the smaller group fitness classes and personal training that Dan offers. Whenever you're in a group class, you don't really get that personal one to one training or customized instructions because often times the programming is from "corporate" or cookie cutter and you just follow what's written down. If you've got an injury, there's modifications so there's no excuses for you not to work out. With Hawc, some of the coaches personalize and prescribe the weights for the exercises and also challenge you to get better and stronger. The energy and motivation from the coaches is all the hype and they really do support your fitness goals! Each class is different and not boring. The instructors all have various styles too. Some of the classes have varied from strength training, power hour, mountaineering, running, etc. however Dan (the owner) is constantly thinking of new ways to challenge the members and come up with different programs to trick your muscles so they don't get used to the same movements. He also takes feedback so if you have any or want more classes, etc. he's willing to hear it as long as there's demand and it aligns with his vision for the gym. It might seem intimidating to check out new gyms but give Hawc a chance. There's specials going on all the time with membership deals and every new member can check out a class for free! When my wife and I went to HAWC gym for the first time 6 years ago, I didn't think it would become such an integral part of our lives. We belonged to ClubSport for over 16 years, but became disillusioned with the nickel and diming for extras like Spartan training or group coaching. We also noticed the coaches and trainers were not necessarily invested in our success and outcomes. We found a totally different experience at HAWC. The owner and head coach, Dan Farrier, was and still is committed to leading us to be better, faster, and stronger. My wife and I were not strangers to fitness, both being accomplished cyclists, runners, and triathletes. I wasn't sure I would learn or take away much from this little gym with the funny name. I was so wrong. After the first 2-3 workouts, I discovered entire muscle groups I did not know I even had. Yes, I was sore and I struggled getting through the workouts, but Dan and the community at HAWC just kept pulling me back and encouraging me to succeed. I originally posted the review below in March of 2022, but Yelp decided I wasn't "active" enough on Yelp to recommend it. I hope this stays up long enough for people to see it, because this gym is a special little piece of magic that you really should try out. Inclusivity, guidance, challenge, community and humor. Those are the first words that come to mind when I think of how I want to describe HAWC Gym to you. I am not big on social stuff, I am not a lifelong gym person, don't like group anything much less fitness classes, and am much heavier than most people I would see at the gym. I tried them all, the big names like 24Hr, UFC, Fitness19, Planet Fitness etc, and some smaller ones on my fitness journey, and they all talk about community or fitness goals, but none of them have delivered like HAWC has. Dan (the owner and one of the coaches) brings innovation, variety and (good) challenge to the classes, but he also brings a dedicated effort at creating true community. I often take classes alongside people who place on podiums of obstacle races or fitness competitions (like nationally-ranked fitness comps) and I ALWAYS feel included, encouraged and honored for my personal gains, never feeling like people are measuring me against where THEY are. Recently there was a weight lifting competition event at the gym for people to get into the 500/1000 club. I could not technically compete in that because I have to adapt my squats due to knee issues. Dan made sure I (and the other people who need adaptations) had our own section, provided guidance and encouragement during the whole event, and all of us broke our PRs. He made sure we were included. The other members congratulated us just as hard as the people hitting 1600lb totals the strict traditional ways. During my time at HAWC I have done things I never thought possible, always with the guidance and encouragement (and when needed, tough love) to get to levels even I could not envision. For super fit people, you will get the challenge and variety you desire to get to your next level (I have seen members who were fit improve to literally ranking first in their gender and/or age group in national competitions). And for people, like me, who are struggling to just get into the gym and who feel uncomfortable in many settings, this place will support you in your journey and get you to where you want to be as well. What can I say about HAWC, that has not been said already? I was never a really active person until I joined HAWC. The first class was a bit intimidating to me because I was not a big gym-goer, but I decided to stick with it and continued to go. Now I actually look forward going to the gym. I never thought I would do an obstacle race, and I have actually completed quite a few! Dan (owner and trainer) and the other trainers definitely push you beyond your comfort zone and test your limits, but in a good way. If you have specific health/fitness goals you want to achieve, they will do what they can to help you achieve them....and you can actually see and feel the gains! The class workouts are always different, and modifications are provided to meet your fitness level or to accommodate an injury. Never the kind of person who was into group classes/training and just went to the gym did my thing and left. I got a lot more out of my fitness since coming to Hawc. I started off coming in just to use the weights and equipment (coming in during off class times helps) but one day I thought I'd give a class a try and I was hooked. One of the options they have is group coaching you can sign up for using an app that shows the sessions available and you just select the one you want to attend. Super easy to sign up, and the classes are a really good one-hour workout that will push you to your personal limit if you want to improve your fitness. I have been working on my health and fitness and have taken it a lot more serious the past couple of years including having just completing 30+ sessions with a great trainer at 24 Hour Fitness in San Ramon. Because of work and other excuses that are not excusable I haven't gone to the gym to maximize all the stuff I did learn and then I learned about HAWC Gym! I've only done 1 session so far and have another one today but that one session was so thorough and complete that I felt like I worked harder than I ever had. The trainer went with my pace without letting me go off the grid too much which made for a much better workout and definitely maximized the time I was there. I replied to his email selecting 6:30 and he replied confirmation. I reached out to Dan, the owner, about an open gym membership. Right away Dan was friendly and invited me down to talk and check the gym out. Gave me a couple days to try it out and I couldn't give him my money any faster If you are looking for a gym, have experience with working out and want a place where you have an amazing amount of options, this is for you. Doing open gym here I think isn't for everyone, you need to have some working knowledge of equipment and how to safely use it all. All the trainers that come throughout the day are very friendly. I can powerlift, do some strongman work and Olympic lifting all in the same place. No matter what time you come you are surrounded by other people working hard, and nothing can beat that environment. HAWC Gym is like my second home, not only because I am here almost everyday, but also because of the supportive HAWC Gym family that the group has become. Everyone is very welcoming and super friendly. It is such a fun group to train with and I always look forward to see their familiar faces :) I go to HAWC Gym for their cross training group sessions and also for personal training sessions with Dan, the owner. The have allll the necessary equipment to train with (eg. tons of weights and kettle bells, a cardio area, a few machines, a TRX section, bands, jump ropes, foam rollers, etc.). Basically, you can name what you would like to work on, and they will have something for you to use! There is a new yoga room on the second floor and I can't wait to try a few yoga classes there! The gym is kept very clean, all of the equipment are always wiped down after being used. Towels and water are provided! I came across Dan's 6 week challenge and signed up after a 6 year hiatus from working out. I thought this would be a great way to kick-start my workout regimen again and finally lose some of this pregnancy weight (x3 babies). And all though I was a gym freak before children, I felt apprehensive about being in a gym again - as if I have never worked out before. I went to this gym originally because I got a groupon and wanted to try something new with my work out routine. I had tried a couple different groupons for other facilities yoga, group classes, etc. But After using my groupon with this place I decided to make this my permanent home for getting fit and healthy. I love the group exercise classes. They are good for anyone trying to get in shape. The trainers tailor the class to your fitness level based on reps and weight. These classes really help me to learn new workouts and keep me going for the full hour. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays I train with Nick Kaplan at 6am. He is a great trainer and very motivational. He likes to focus on breathing and form during your workout. I am already seeing great results after just a month. He is very high energy even at 6am when I am tired he gets be moving right away. I love going early because its a great start to my day and gives me energy. His workouts have really given me a lot more definition in my physique. I have really toned up. Tuesdays nights at 6pm I train with Dan Farrier he is a great guy. Very nice and easy to talk too. His classes are great. I used to train with Dan 4 days a week and he measured my body fat and weight and I ended up losing 15 pounds in 4 months and gaining muscle. He is the owner of the gym and is always happy to accommodate you in anything that you need. Thursdays nights at 6PM I train with Tony Nella. Tony is very funny. His classes are geared more towards strength a lot of leg work. Tony really emphasis form so that you are always doing everything safe which is great! He even figured out why I could not do a proper squat. It is because I wear heels so he fixed this by putting weights under my feet and I was able to perform squats correctly which benefited in my overall fitness. Tony always offer to stretch you after class which is great. Thanks HAWC gym for everything everyone there is super nice and helpful. Even the people who go to the classes are GREAT! I have a tendency to push myself a bit too hard. When I try to work out on my own or in a gym, I usually get injured within the first six months. I was about to resort to a personal trainer when I was introduced to Dan Farrier, the owner. After meeting with Dan, I decided to try out the small group classes. You can pay by the class, so I could try several with no long term commitment. The Cross-Training group classes are awesome: 4-8 people only, so Dan is able to adjust the intensity of the workouts for each person in the class. It's like having a personal trainer with the group benefits (peer support, less $). They also have other classes, included a Spartan Run prep class. I've taken three classes so far and was pushed hard, but not too hard. I would recommend HAWC Gym for the novice "couch potato" as well as cross-fitters and endurance run enthusiasts. read more
