I had come here with a buddy. I am a woman. 1) They consistently run behind on appointments. 2) Nothing on the door about women not being allowed 3) I was in the shop for my buddies haircut - after they started cutting his hair they told me to go outside. I feel like they may have waited intentionally until the cut started so their client (my friend) felt pressured to go through with and finish the haircut. A real "shoot the shit with the guys" kinda shop. A cool bunch of fellas. There's no awkward silence here. They are very knowledgeable of old school cuts. Art and Rey seem to get my cut right every time. Compared to other barber shops I've been to, their price is some where in the middle. Not too expensive but also not the cheap cuts you get in the hood. It's well worth the extra bucks. Never had a bad experience. The only barber shop I trust. I never feel comfortable at other barber shops but Hawleywood's LB is really friendly, personable, and gives the handsomest haircuts. This review only applies to the Long Beach location as I have not visited the rest. It's a shame I received poor customer service since the haircuts are excellent (this is why I gave 3 stars). I had been going to Hawleywoods for a few months without incident. I understand they are very busy and do not take walk-ins. But if you have a strict appointment policy, you should do better to honor it. The first issue, I had made an appointment for 12:30pm. I showed up and was told they didn't have an appointment for me. He asked me to wait 20 minutes and he could squeeze me in. No big deal, these things happen. I waited and got a great haircut. A few weeks later, I made another appointment. I called the day before and was told they still had me scheduled. I showed up and was again told they didn't have an appointment for me. I explained that I called the day before and confirmed. All he said was they were too busy and to call and make another appointment. I had a big weekend and could not wait, so I drove to another nearby barbershop. I explained what happened and was told they had a cancellation. I was given a beer and a great haircut on the spot. I don't know if I will go back to Hawleywood's as they helped me find another barbershop that's just as good and have not yet forgotten an appointment. read more

This is a place that still offers hospitality and a cold one while your waiting. That's right! A cold one! A mans place for sure. It's not often when a Man gets to indulge himself without any of the daily noise we've all grown so accustomed to. A place, if even for an hour, to shut it all out. It's definitely a place for me. These cool cats don't just rush through each patron as to keep the line moving, but rather meticulously snipping classic cuts in their own time. This place is great! I don't understand why some of the women on here have left bad reviews because they are not allowed inside of the barber shop. Your review should be on the hair cut. Not if you are allowed inside or not and this place does an amazing job cutting both of the guys in my life hair. He has been going over a year to have his hair cut there, he knows a good one because he had his hair cut every week for four years due to the military. They give a special sort of costumer service there that he feels has been lost. When our son turned three we had not been able to find anywhere that could cut his hair the way we wanted. They either had all the lines messed up or too babyish. He gets to go in here with his Daddy for Father/Son bonding time. Oscar is amazing with him, and my once three year old who would cry his eyes out getting his hair cut now talks about how he can't wait to see Oscar. A barber shop is a man's world. They don't offer women styles and unless you have a beard as a women, why should you go in there. When I first moved down to Orange County about three years ago, I started going to Nate at Hawleywood's. The shop was close by my apartment so I decided to give it a try. It's always tough trying to find a new barber, as I'm sure a lot of you know all as well. I couldn't have been happier after my first appointment! When you walk in, it's like you're walking into a 1950's time capsule; checkered tile floor, classic red chairs, and a slew of old American memorabilia all over the walls (and ceiling). They have a few adult magazines to flip through and some cold PBR to sip on while you wait for your turn. The barbers are all super friendly and welcoming. And, most importantly, you will walk out of there with an amazing haircut. These days, I live up in Long Beach which is about 45 minutes to an hour away, depending on traffic. Believe me, I would love to find a barber nearby, but there's no way I would go to anyone else. Nate is a true professional and now a good friend even. He takes his time to give me the same quality cut every time. By far the best barber I've ever had. I would recommend Hawleywood's to anyone looking for that classic barber shop atmosphere, and a high quality haircut. And obviously, I would tell you to visit Nate, but I've seen the other barbers' work as well and know they do a great job too. read more

Well, I can't say anything about their services cause I didn't reach that point, the bad experience with me started at 9:23 am when I get in there as walk-in costumer, they asked me do you have an appointment, I said no. then they told me ok you gonna wait for a little bit, I said ok. At that time there are two barbers they been working with two costumers, and the third barber arrived at 9:30..at 9:45 the first barber he finished his job and the costumer gone already..I am still waiting for them to jump in on that chair, when I asked them they told me Sorry there is another appointment after a while!! at 10:10 the appointment costumer he arrived. DURING THIS 25 minutes that barber he was watching the tv and drinking his coffee..here I started to ask them, when I will get in guys?? the big man (the third barber who came at 9:30) answer me with a silly face: why you didn't make an appointment before you come? me: I don't know that you have an appointments system, I checked your website and... he interrupted my talk, and said: it's on or shop business cards!! I told him: and how I get you business card if it's my first time here..he shaked his shoulders in a way "It's your fault"!! I keept my tongue inside my mouth, I preferred to wait. At 10:30 I lost my last patience, and I walked out before I leave I told them sorry but you need to put at least a sign at front of your shop it says we deal only with an appointments and also you need to put this announcement on your website, the manager he answered me this time, said: yes we have it there in our website!..his bad luck that I already have there website open on my mobile phone hehehe, I passed my mobile phone to him and told him: show me!! he searched there for a minute and he returned the mobile phone to me while he say: strange, I believe it was there!! even he didn't say sorry!! Now the first barber when he saw everything he did what the manager should to do in the first place: and he told me we are so sorry for that..and here is an apology complementary card, so you can come next time and you will get a free hair cut! I just moved out, and I swore I will never step again in there even if it's the last barbershop in the world. Careful when you walk in the door. The pretentiousness drips from the walls and ceiling. Despite the owner not being in this branch, it still caries his same ego. Never have I felt more like an asshole for being a potential customer then after dealing with these guys. All I wanted was a haircut. You'd think I was expecting to be let into their fancy country club. It's just after 3pm on a Saturday and my main shop, SYNDICATE, was closed for the day and I thought they were going to be closed on Sunday for an event at Alex's bar. I didn't know if I'd have time later in the week for a cut, so I figured I'd sacrifice, but what a mistake. There are 3 other guys waiting for haircuts, two guys giving cuts and 3 chairs completely empty. I figured the wait was long, but I didn't have much to do anyway. The first barber asked if I had an appointment. I told him no but would he be able to squeeze me in sometime. He grimaced and said not today. I asked about Sunday or Monday. He said I'd have to wait until next week sometime. I shook my head and so no thanks, I'll just go to SYNDICATE. He huffed as I walked out. It's blatantly obvious that they are trying to appear busier than they really are by taking appointments only and not allowing walk-ins. If you're that freakin' busy, hire more barbers. With 3 chairs open on a Saturday afternoon, why not go try to bring in more cash when possible. This is the barber shop equivalent of club having a waiting line outside to appear popular, but there's no one inside the bar. Once again, ditch these guys and head over to SYNDICATE on Broadway. I am not an experienced haircut-getter. I made this clear. I did my best to explain what I was looking for in a haircut. I made it clear that I didn't use layrite or products like it in my hair. The barber seemed pleasant and willing to ablige. He started cutting, showed me the mirror, and I said I was thinking shorter. He cut my hair, cleaned it up and GREASED IT UP WITH LAYRITE and THEN showed me the mirror. Apart from all the product, it looked fine. Get home, take a shower and was getting ready for an event and I notice one inch pieces of hair sticking out on either side of my head. I use natural products and don't favor a product - heavy style. These hairs simply stick out. There is nothing I can do about them. I called the barber, I explained that the cut wasn't gonna work as I was walking around looking like an asshole. He tells me that he deliberately cut it that way for x, y, and z reasons; but said he'd fix it anytime. I raced back to the shop, and waited 20 minutes for his chair to open only to get a raft of bullshit attitude from the barber about me "not knowing what I want" and generally being a condescending asshat. The fixed cut is less fucked than the first, but will still need to be fixed - by a different shop. Their bullshit cut, and subsequent (slow as fuck) fixing has made me miss the event I was headed to (and got my hair cut for in the first place) Fuck Hawleywood's, fuck them so hard. read more

Ive been getting my hair cut at this location for about 4 years and the last 2 times I've been disappointed with inconsistency at the shop. Example one: Appointment issues The only reason why an establishment would have strict appointment rules, is so the customers wouldn't have to wait. Sadly, the last two times, they have pushed my appointment up so they can give a "friend a quick cut" before mine and someone needed a break. They did ask me if i was ok with it, and i did said it was ok because the barber did reassure me it would be quick. This is an issue, especially since not all of the customers that go to Hawleywoods live in Long Beach. I drive all the way down from Culver City. The point being, if you have a strict appointment policy then you shouldn't be pushing customers appointments. Example two: The horrible attitudes. After all these years I'm like a stranger walking in even though I come all the time. I'm giving them a 3 star because of the haircut alone and not for anything else. Had the service been at least good then they could have earned more stars. I'm still in search of a great shop that has the great service to match it. A shop where I don't loose hours of my day because I'm treated like a customer that doesn't matter. read more

I feel cheated and ripped off. For my entire adult life I have been settling for crappy chain produced haircuts. I've never had a true barber experience until today. Chalk it up to ignorance, cheapness, or lack of adventure. My usual haircut experience involves walking into a chain (never by appointment), I tell the nice asian lady what number guard to use on my hair, hope she understands me, and hope for the best. First impressions were...this place is legit. Pabst Blue Ribbon shrine, soccer on TV, and Penthouse mags laying around. Rockabilly type joint. The haircut was second to none. Much time was spent making sure the cut was even and precise. Just when I thought it was done, the hot towel comes out with the straight blade trim around the edges. F@cking amazing. Came in for a cut for a wedding and I have to say, Art hooked me up and left me leaving the shop looking fresh. I usually cut my own hair and on a rare occasion do I go to a barber for a professional cut. I never had to worry about what it was going to look like because I showed Art a picture and he got it right away, it's hard to find confidence in someone who doesn't cut your hair on the regular, but Art showed his professionalism and skill with the clipper. For a fact 'll be coming back to Hawleywoods for a fresh cut, and I'll definitely be requesting Art as my barber.
