Great store, no complaints. (Except for the way OLCC works - liquor can't be sold in grocery stores here so you have to go to a business like this. Prices and selection are standardized.) They have a small parking lot off Hawthorne. The mini-mall it's in could use some updates to feel lively. Staff was the standout feature here - greeted me and offered help, then made a great recommendation for what I was looking for. Early in my bourbon journey I did what many of us do, called to see if a bottle was in stock. He gave an exasperated sigh and said he kept those for his instagram followers. I could feel his eyes rolling back in his head at the shear annoyance of my call. Well over $30k spent on liquor later I have yet to set foot in that store and every time I see his store mentioned, the words "that a$$ hole" comes out of my mouth. I was excited and just starting this journey and was rapidly told i was an annoyance. You never know who's on the phone. Smile, be cheerful. Piss and moan when you hang up. Your review sucks. First of all, at first glance you state that they are not open on sundays. When you go one step deeper you have their Sunday hours correctly as 10 AM to 6 PM. Does anybody even review or edit the site who actually is from the site? Also, I find it very demeaning that you say oh yeah, your average liquor store or whatever. It's not your liquor store everyone there knows exactly where every bottle of everything is and what it is. There are a whole Lotta liquor stores like that. These people know their booze. I have two dogs, my favorite things in the world. When we go there, they immediately know that I am there with my dogs because my husky says hello and they say we see you sigma. And then they stop all traffic to the register and give my dogs, attention and treats. My dogs are the best dogs in the world. These people are kind, genuine, no attitude, they're not prejudice or bigots, is it a neglect mix of race and other I don't need to get into. They're always friendly. They are more than knowledgeable. I tipped them every time I go in there. If everyone did that it would make a big difference for the people who work there and you know what most of the people don't do that. It's not your liquor store. This place is the best liquor store in Portland that I've ever been to. They may not have everything the best, but like the German Shepherd they're the best because they can do everything. I used the Oregon Liquor Search tool to see if this store had Chartreuse, and it said they had 12 bottles. I went in to try to get a bottle, and the man behind the counter just kept repeating the word "No" over and over and didn't say anything else. I had one hell of a great experience at Hawthorne Liquor recently and needed to share. I went in thinking I was going to pick up a bottle of a tried-and-true scotch I usually mindlessly grab, but a jolly gentleman named Scott saw my choice and instead of just ringing me out and sending me on my way, engaged me in a little game of "If You Like That, Have You Tried This?" and I ended up taking home two bottles of his recommendation for the same price as my one, and now I have a new favourite go-to scotch for when I don't want to spend $40+/bottle (like right now when money is tight but I'm drinking much more than usual). Very disappointed in staff in last 3 visits--not acting safe with social distancing--no masks, no gloves, nor use of sanitizer between patrons at the cash register. My first visit to Hawthorne liquor store was a very good. the gentleman at the counter (Pink Floyd fan) was extremely helpful in helping every single customer with personalized recommendations and being very intuitive to listening the customers needs (hear him ask every customer about their product interests) great local place flashback of the old days when liquor stores where all locally owned. I wouldn't recommend expecting a 60 second in and out. They appear to be a mom and pop business and only have a couple of people working there at a time. read more

Yes, they let you buy hard alcohol. Yes, their selection is probably moderate, but in the midst of all the full bottles, the choices are staggering. Yes, the store is mostly clean and well-lit. No bitches getting stabbed in the parking lot, at least not from what I've seen. But if you happen to be in line for your purchase and the counter-person takes and scans your ID and it happens to be your birthday, yes, the scanning device plays the birthday song. It plays it in a tinny, midi-style tone, no less. Bee bo bee bum bing bing. And yes, the counter-person couldn't just wish a benevolent day of birth and be done with the transaction. Instead, he asks, "Oh, so it's your birthday?" "Really?" "Yeah, that thing plays that song when it's the person's birthday." Then he pauses, like we've just shared a magic moment because we both know my date of birth. And he adds, "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone how old you really are." "I'm. Not. OLD. Die, liquor store worker!" Maybe in my youth, I would have pitched a fit. You would have seen the broken bottle bits lodged in the most uncomfortable crevices of the former counter-person on the six o'clock news. But I like to believe I've traded my spitfire for strength in these mature years. I did not stab the bitch. There are only a couple ways in which a Portland Liquor store may distinguish itself. Selection, layout, and customer service (which might include events/tastings). And how often are they even utilized. So when my much anticipated stop at the liquor store leaves me feeling a bit annoyed and angry (and ultimately without what I went in for), I gotta steal back one of them stars. Looking for a new regular stop on my way back from teaching art to kids. Man do I need a drink and smokes. The woman behind the counter reached for my stuff, while the oblivious customer stood blocking the entire counter although her purchase had been made. I asked for American Spirit orange. She started to hand me a somewhat orange pack that looked nothing like my regular pack. They color code them to avoid this problem! When I stopped her and voiced my concern, she responded "so, you want em?" I asked if she knew what flavor/strength they were - she voiced her own knowing of nothing about it. No apologies, no "I will try and find out for next time". She just lacked class all around, and I'n left trying to find a new place, convenient to my commute. read more

Well, yes, considering the fine state of OR does not allow liquor to be sold in grocery stores (who came up with this insipid statute??)...Will any of the workers chat you up about the various nuances of a single malt Scotch?? No, not on your life...sigh...this is like a quick-n-dirty stop for people on their way home from wherever to get a fifth of poison-of-their-choice, and be done with it. Brightly lit, fluorescent to boot, not particularly inviting, tho' if you drive over, there is ample parking. Not crowded (at least when I strolled in), and there does seem to be quite a selection available. I picked up something special for The Big Man's Christmas stocking (ssshhhhhh....) and the transaction was swift & efficient. Will I be a regular customer? Probably not. If I'm going to part with some cash, I'd like a more personal sort of customer service, but then again, perhaps in this part of town, anonymity is a good thing....they most likely have what you're looking for. read more

Looking for the usual in liquor and mixers? This store probably has it and has a nice location, easy parking, and is clean and well lit. Looking for a rarer bottle or need staff help? Forget it. This store treats "the public" as second class citizens, catering instead to their bar accounts. I had an overly rude experience today with their staff after asking after what they "had in the back" a fairly common question when shopping for whiskey. I've got a choice about where my money goes, and this store won't be getting any more of mine. I would rather drive a few minutes out of my way and be treated kindly. Smart, funny, quirky staff. Some serious depth in some unusual types of liquor. A broad range of whiskies, including a major section of Irish, and a very respectable sake section. They even had several different types of absinthe, although the do not carry Tokaji (aka "tokay"), the wonderful Hungarian dessert wine... but they DO know about the puttonyos rating system and all, so they are "Tokaji-aware." As for the reviewers who down-rated this store because the inventory website was incorrect, Hawthorne Liquor does not appear to have a website, so the inventory website must be the one that's run by OLCC... so you are blaming the store for the *government's website* not being up-to-date? Given my past experience of government websites and government offices, I would not first assume the *business* is the cause of the problem. Those ratings do explain for me why it is that Google averages well over 4 stars for this store with 200-plus review, while at 29 reviews on Yelp (and several of them complaining that the OLCC inventory site was not accurate about what was in stock at Hawthorne), the average score is far lower. Place is worth a look, and yes, call ahead if you are looking for Liquor Obscura and don't want to just see what they have. read more

Really disappointed with these guys. Online inventory showed several bottles of hard to get bourbon and whiskey. Showed up before the store opened and waited, only for an employee to tell me it was an "inventory glitch" once they did open. REALLY? How do you have an inventory glitch on 8 different types of sought after whiskey on the same day. I call BS. In reality it's either reserved for bar/restaurant accounts (hope this is the case) or the good stuff is getting purchased by employees. Either way, something's fishy... Pretty frustrated with Hawthorne Liquor today, I was in the other day and was overcharged by about $25. I called and was told I could come in and a manager would be able to pull up the transaction by running my card and be able to refund me the money. When I went in this morning I was told that since I trusted them and didn't take a receipt that they couldn't prove what I went home with and wouldn't even pull up the transaction. Any liquor store that sells Peruvian Pisco gets points in my book. I dropped by this establishment while waiting to be seated for dinner. So, it was super convenient. The staff were nice and pointed me in the direction I needed to go. The place was fairly hopping for a late afternoon on a summer Saturday.
