Hawthorne has quietly snuck up to being one of the best wineries on Mission. The tasting room is small and bright, benefitting from all of the windows. They have continued to develop the patio and grounds, a slice of Lake Michigan visible. The owners and their staff are friendly and engaging. There are enough options that a group of six with different tastes can find something they liked. Their Auxerrois is popular with our group, it's a bit different, though I am now seeing it pop up more these days. read more

Our first Michigan wine tasting. We picked Hwthron as our first stop because we noticed Auxerrois as one of their wines, and we have been wanting to try it. Beautiful setting with very nice views There's a big trading bar and ~4 tables in the main room, a nice patio, and then grounds with chairs. I think there's an upstairs, though we didn't go up there. It was really busy yet they seated us very quickly. Everyone was really friendly and helpful There are several flights ryou can buy glasses or bottles. We did 2 flights and bought a bottle to go. The wines we tried were all nice. I didn't fall in love and need a case shipped home, but all drinkable. What we tasted: Chardonay(ish) Flight, which included a stainless steel and an oaked chardonnay as well as an Auxerrois Premium Flight, which included a sparkling wine, merlot cab franc blend, and a Lemberger Popcorn Flight, which is 3 types of popcorn to pair with your wine....kind of silly but I saw it on YouTube and had to try it. Employees were very friendly. Note the entrance road is narrow but it is posted one way so theres no need to be alarmed. Hawthorne Vineyards has a decent selection of wines you can purchase by the glass and they offer flights as well. We also opted for a charcuterie snack pack to enjoy while sitting outside. They have a small patio with tables and propane heaters for those crisp fall days as well as a pair of solo stove campfires out in the yard. There is ample seating, at least when we were there. The views are spectacular, and the drive in is quite fun as well. A couple near us had their dog outside playing fetch, so I'm assuming the place is pet friendly but may be worth asking ahead of time. There were 2 gender neutral restrooms, both of which were nice and tidy. read more

First time coming here. The preselected wine groupings were ok, as you didn't have to guess. Ordering our selections was very challenging! There were quite a few people there which made it extremely LOUD! We took our wine outside to enjoy the beautiful scenery! I highly recommend sitting in the Adirondack chairs! It's almost hidden, so make sure you are paying attention to GPS to turn in, otherwise it's really easy to miss the turn in since there are just houses. We were told this is the only winery in Old mission where you have views of both bays from inside. Great patio area and views. We did a patio flight and a dry flight. One of the few wineries we were able to make a reservation at. Note - I didn't realize a lot of the wineries in the Traverse City area require reservations until about 2 days before our trip and only 2 had openings left the weekend we were in there. Lovely tasting room, very friendly staff, and amazing view. We had the all red flight which consisted of a 2018 Gamay, 2017 Reserve Pinot Noir, and a 2016 Reserve Merlot. Very good wine. Lovely winery on the peninsula! The drive up to Hawthorne was beautiful. It sits at the top of a hill, so the views were lovely. They were quite busy on the Saturday afternoon that we visited, but there was someone checking everyone in and explaining the choices available, so that helped with the foot traffic. Loved Nancy, our server. She was knowledgeable and efficient, but didn't hover. The charcuterie board was delicious and paired wonderfully with our semi-dry wine choices. This was a great stop on our wine trail tour! It was very busy here and we had a hard time finding a spot at the bar, but it was well worth the squeeze. The wine here is exceptional. They also had an exclusive type of French wine that no one else had, too. If only for that, I would recommend making a stop here. The girl that gave us our tasting was extremely knowledgeable about all of the wines and she did a great job keeping up with the crowd. I've tried to find a good red in Michigan for a while now. Many of the dry reds I've tried are so washed out and bland. Not at Hawthorne! I was pleasantly surprised with my Pinot Noir, and even purchased the bottle. I will definitely go back when we are back in the state for a visit! read more

Literally a hidden gem. This place sits atop a giant hill which gives you a birds eye view of the vineyard and the water. I absolutely loved it! We got a Groupon (which trust me is the way to go) where you get 5-6 tastings, 2 full glasses of wine of your choice, AND a meat and cheese spread with generous portions! For $19! (see pictures) I absolutely loved it! The view is amazing and the quaint patio off to the left is a beautiful touch, you're close enough to everyone that you can make small talk without it being awkward but spaced out enough where you can enjoy some me time on your own. :) They also have a suuuper pretty look out point (also pictured) where you can take pictures with the background! The wine, I did enjoy I just wish the sweet wines were a bit sweeter but I was still unregretfully able to settle on a wine for my full glass and had no regrets! Visit! read more

I was on a wine tour with 4 people and we tried to stop here. Upon walking in there was nobody at the bar and a staff member asked if we had a reservation to which we said no but had no problem waiting if we had to. We were then told that since a "bus of 18" was coming they could not take us and were told we couldn't stay. I've been coming to traverse city for years and have never been told to leave. The view is lack luster, and the greeting was less than pleasant to say the least. We made a reservation ahead of time and once we arrived we were greeted by a gentleman named Mathew who so rudely told us to "not stand together" even though we are family and arrived together. He persistently told us to separate and was rude while giving us our wine. He then mocked us when we asked for ice for our water. I am going to attempt to review each of the nearly 40 wineries in the Grand Traverse area. In an effort to remain as objective as possible, I will be reviewing the wineries based on how well they live up to their vision of winemaking. Hawthorne is probably the best Northern Michigan winery that you have never heard of. Even individuals very familiar with the wine scene seem to bypass this one and it is really too bad. There is a lot to love about Hawthorne, they truly are craft winemakers, with a focus on high quality at an affordable price; and for me it doesn't get better than that. Hawthorne is located near the bottom of the Old Mission Peninsula, and is the first winery that you will come to on Peninsula Drive. They have an absolutely gorgeous tasting room with vineyards on site. It is incredibly serene and peaceful, and offers wonderful views of both bays. I would say though that the tasting room itself, may be a bit sterile for some. The staff, is generally fairly knowledgeable, and able to answer questions better than most tasting staff. Their wines tend to be on the dry side of things, but they also have some sweet wines as well. Hawthorne has made the wonderful decision to focus on some of the region's best, yet neglected grapes. These include the Alsatian Auxerrois, the Austrian Lemberger, and the very underrated Pinot Blanc. But their best wine is my opinion is the Gamay Noir. Gamay is used to make Beaujolais, and does so well up here it is a wonder that more places don't grow it. Not only is their Gamay one of the best light reds in the region, it is also amazingly priced at $16 for a large harvest and $20 for a smaller one. I have only heard one person complain about Hawthorne, but the individual expressing that opinion was unable to clearly communicate what the problem was when pressed. Hawthorne is far and away my favorite winery on Old Mission, and probably in the top three in the area in price to quality. read more

My husband and I visited this fabulous winery on Thursday 7/23/2020. We loved it and were so happy to have found it! The staff were all so friendly and accomodating. I was very pleased to see the precautions they were taking in this time of Covid19. I was happy to see that my health as well as that of their workers was a priority. The atmosphere, view and wine were all spectacular. I wish this wasn't our last night in Traverse City (we live about 25 miles outside Chicago) otherwise we would have definitely been back. This was the first winery we stopped at during our drive up the Old Mission Peninsula, and it was beautiful! The views from the tasting room were spectacular! If it hadn't started raining when we got there I would have enjoyed my wine on the patio. Hawthorne was very busy when we arrived so it took a little while to get menus and get served, but the employees were friendly and helpful, especially the one who mostly helped us. We had a group of four tasting and a few children who loved the addition of the sodas for them to enjoy! Prices for tastings and bottles were reasonable, and they were offering a discount on bottles purchased that day during the tasting. I'm all, we walked away happy with a few great pictures and bottles of wine! I would definitely stop here anytime I'm in the area! read more

The wines are good but they are almost all dry wines. If your a sweet wine drinker this not the place for you. If you like dry then stop here. The scenery is very beautiful. There is a long winding road leading up to it with the bay in the background. The previous reviewer is right the service is iffy but everything else makes up for it. read more
