We've been going for ice cream, lobster rolls and sherbet at Hayward's for over 17 years. Everything has been excellent. The service is as quick as humanly possible considering how many people descend upon them for ice cream! Everyone is courteous and professional. Most of all I want to acknowledge the generosity of the owners in their kind actions toward toward the needy in our community. The icecream is good, but this Hayward's is more expensive and gives less icecream than any other Haywards in the area (Nashua and Milford locations). The double scoop of ice cream here is smaller than the single scoop at other locations, but definitely not less expensive. Holy Kancamangus! Hayward's Ice Cream opened its newest location in Merrimack on DW Highway in the redeveloped Merrimack 360 Center. They have outside takeout windows and inside counter service with indoor seating for air conditioned or heated comfort. There is also outdoor seating in the front and back of the building. This location also has a drive thru window, which will be open in the future. They offer soft serve ice cream and for now, over 20 flavors of homemade hard serve ice cream, sherbet, yogurt including sugar free, lactose free options, served in dishes or cones/waffle cones, plus sundaes, shakes, frappes, floats, freezes, banana boats, and avalanches. They also serve steamed hot dogs with toppings, chili, meatball subs, chips, kids meals, and Pepsi fountain drinks. I stopped here on opening day and the place was busy. I went inside, which was packed with customers and eventually ordered the Hot Dog Special ($5.95 plus tax) 2 hot dogs, bag of chips (US Foods), and Pepsi fountain drink. The hot dogs and the New England hot dog buns were steamed topped with mustard, relish, onions. After finishing lunch, I ordered ice cream from the outside takeout window, no line! I got 2 kiddie size ice cream in cups including a one scoop Kancamangus ($3.95 plus tax) and a chocolate soft serve ($4.45). I got the soft serve ice cream for free with coupon. The chocolate soft serve was dense and refreshing. The Kancamangus ice cream had chocolate covered pretzels, caramel in hard vanilla ice cream. Hayward's Ice Cream is still one of my favorite stops for good ice cream and steamed hot dogs in the Greater Nashua area and now in Merrimack, competing with the legendary King Kone and Axel's both close by on the same side of DW Highway. read more

Hayward's has the best ice cream. expensive, very. Great ice cream, yes. However, last night my son came down from Maine looking for Hayward's ice cream in a homemade waffle cone. I knew I would pay $1.25 more, and I did not care.......until what he got was a crappy Joy waffle cone. No flavor, dry, not worth the calories, and he doesn't count calories. We came home, and dumped the ice cream in a dish. The dog didn't even eat the came. Here is a tip for Hayward's. When you switch to crap tell people so they can choose not get your new replacement that you thought was a great idea to save money. Apparently, you think customers won't notice. Wrong. Most people are not as dumb as you think they are. The total price for this disappointment was close to $10. I'd just finished up at the outlet mall just ten minutes away, and after all the boasting to my new wife about how superior NH Ice Cream is to the rest of the plebian horse shite out there, I needed a place to prove my point. Enter Hayward's, a brand I'd never heard of, nestled in a strange stand-alone establishment off a strip mall on Route 3. I sauntered into their sleepy scoop-room (which I should mention has a drive-thru if you're in a rush), and their staff were absolutely enamored--ENAMORED, I tell you--that I chose their creamery as my proof that New Hampshire ice cream is superior to all else. My wife ordered the black rasberry and I ordered my favorite, cookie dough. You can usually judge the mettle of an establishment by either flavor. Black Rasberry is exceptionally difficult to get right--too much rasberry, you have cough syrup. Cookie dough less so, but if you over-sugar your dough then you're dunced and liable to get a cavity to boot. Our girl came right up. We asked for one scoop each and got a veritable pound of ice cream in each cup. Live Free or Die portioning, God Bless New Hampshire! Damn the calories, full speed ahead! We sat at the pleasant, functional bar seating they had and began to devour our cups. The Black Rasberry is the best god damned Black Rasberry I've ever tasted in my life, and I've tasted Black Rasberry from Seattle to Scranton. The Cookie Dough was generously portioned with dough morsels, and an extra helping of chocolate chips for good measure, neither too sweet. I'm from the eastern part of the state and only go there on holiday; Merrimack is forty five friggen minutes away. But you better bet your last lemon drop that I'm trekking my way out to this excellent establishment! Ten out of Fucking Ten will drive 45 minutes for Haywards. This time we went at 6 pm on a Sunday, waited at the window for about 20 minutes and we were next in line when the employee closed the window right in front of us, offering no explanation why he was closing his window. If I could leave a zero I would. We drove half an hour to get ice cream. We went through the drive through and it said closed. We assumed the store was still opened as it was 8:45 and two websites said opened till 9 and the lights were on. Walked up to the window and no one would speak to me. Windows where shut. I mouthed to one girl " are you closed? Your website says you close at 9" She ignored me, turned her head and said to another worker "if we are closed, we are closed" I asked if there was a manager on duty and all of the high school workers scurried to the back except for one young boy who wouldn't make eye contact with me. Is that seriously how you treat your loyal paying customers? Show a little respect and open the window and say we closed early for whatever reason. Clearly they are very poorly trained and shouldn't be left alone without a manager to serve customers. I've never seen a place run so poorly and such inexperienced and immature staff. First of all, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that 3/4 of your employees are out back crushing up Vicodin, but I digress. Girl at the window couldn't be bothered to even remotely respond or even smile when I greeted her with a smile and said "Hi, how are you?" She responded $8.14. Received the sundae and whoa, for the money one would think you could could expect more than 2 TABLESPOONS of hot fudge! Total waste of money. I really liked Haywards when they opened in Merrimack. Who doesn't love an ice cream place with a drive-thru?!? Recently I feel the service has gone downhill. Last week I took my son there for an after school treat. I ordered 2 scoops in a waffle cone, and he ordered 2 scoops in a dish. I was handed my waffle cone, and it was huge! It had 2 generous scoops of ice cream, and it was even pushed down into the cone. I was handed my son's and it was pretty small...barely sticking up over the edge of the dish. We pulled away for a minute so I could make sure both flavors he had chosen had been put into the bowl. We only saw one flavor, after digging and turning the ice cream. We went back through the drive-thru, and I showed the teen at the window what the issue was. She went away for a moment, and then came back and said "sorry, but my friend said she put both flavors in the dish". I asked for the manager. The manager was rude, and said both flavors must be there. I showed her how small the portion was, and she said it was two scoops. It most definitely was not. We spent $15 on two ice creams, and only got 1 1/2. Normally I wouldn't complain here, but the ridiculousness of the situation is bothering me. They could've handled the situation by just putting a scoop of the flavor we didn't get into a dish, and handing it to us. Instead they decided to be rude, and deny what happened even though I could clearly see the order wasn't correct. They've lost a customer. I will now go to Bruster's who may not have a drive-thru, but they have better ice cream, and good service. read more

Placed a simple order online with two friends. Waited longer than the estimated wait time online. That's okay, but then they forgot my friend's entire meal. They checked our bags and checked the food that we have and *surprise* we didn't have her food. When we did get her food, items were still missing. I bought a strawberry sundae with marshmallow sauce today 6/20/20. I asked for extra strawberries because I love them usually. Bad move!
