As far as ice cream parlors go, Moo's is legendary amongst Derrians (not sure if that's a term used, but I'm going with it) for their high quality, damn near luxurious style of frozen pastries. If I could describe Moo's in only two words, they would be: quality control. Funnily enough, I rarely go here. In fact, I haven't had the Peanut Butter Cup ice cream in YEARS! I had nearly forgotten how smooth and creamy their ice cream is. The way they can make vanilla ice cream also taste peanut buttery is a feat familiar only to magicians and wizards. In other words, their stuff is just THAT good! Ultimately, I'm glad wifey talked me into coming back here on a whim. It's just that I'm hardly ever in the mood for dessert of any kind. But every once in a while....I get a sweet tooth for something with peanut butter in it. And now that my taste buds have been reminded of the elegance this ice cream effortlessly carries, I think I can manage to find an excuse to come here slightly more often. Only problem is they're mainly open during the warmer months. But....I totally get why. It's just a shame I failed to take a pic of the ice cream, since I was too lost in the abyss of ecstasy that was my sweet treat. Besides, I didn't want it to melt. Ah, well. Might remember next time. One last caveat: they don't really have their own parking lot. So, you just kinda....pull into one of the adjacent lots on either side of the place and hope you find a spot. My sister takes her grandchildren here every week. She always post pictures of the ice cream they get and I am always very jealous because I am not with them as I live in New Mexico. Well today was the day to eat at moos. The menu for ice cream is UN believable, many many choices of flavors on not only hard scooped ice cream but soft serve also! I have been a very loyal moos customers for years now but I can't see myself returning in the future. From what I have noticed is that there is no rush to get the ice cream out as the employees look to find a leader that does not seem to be there. Service is not what it used to be and at this point I don't know if you can really blame the employees as it feels that since the new owners took over the employees look to be looking forward to finishing their shifts rather than enjoy being there like years past. Ice cream shop right on 28. They have like 20 flavors of soft serve. They take vanilla soft serve and add the flavoring. And lo and behold you end up with amaretto soft serve. It had the same texture and the same ribbons of ice cream of your typical soft serve. It wasn't one of those weird flavored soft serves where you have drips of syrup on the edges of your cones. This tasted like there was a whole vat of it in a machine out back. Only 1 size for flavored. But it was heavenly delicious. The caramel turtle was full of caramel, and had lots of chocolate covered caramel cups, but I spent way too much time looking for the pecans. Aren't pecans integral to turtles? They don't offer kiddie size in hard ice cream. Just small. The location on 28 makes it easy to find. But makes for crappy atmosphere. You sit at picnic tables - your choice of with or without shade - in the parking lot listening to the never ending line of cars go by and breathing their exhaust. Heavenly ice cream. My hot fudge sundae (with PB fudge ice cream)was sublime and my partner's double cup was very tasty. Creamy and delicious. There was indoor seating available but we sat on the picnic benches outside. Plenty of seating available. The only reason I take off a star is because they only accept cash. I find it so unexpected in these days of technology that cards are not accepted. Inconvenient when you only see the small signs after you've parked and stood on line a while. Pretty disappointed in our trip to Moo's today. We sampled Kahlua chip, which just tasted like coffee ice cream, and snickers, which was decent but tasted mostly like plain vanilla ice cream with the occasional peanut or chocolate chip. We decided to go with the double Chocolate brownie. Definitely not double chocolate and has chunks in it that seem more like brownie batter than brownie. We order an ice cream cake for my son's birthday every year but this year it was a major disappointment. It was supposed to be cookie dough but it was just vanilla with a very few, very small bits of dough. Not a single speck of chocolate and not enough dough to impart any taste at all. Every time we try to go here the soft serve machine is broken. Tonight, there was a very long line (understandable for a holiday weekend and a very warm night-not a problem) The problem is they had a large sign stating they aren't accepting credit cards that you can see from the line but nothing about a huge part of their menu being unavailable. It's not like they only have vanilla, chocolate and twist. If you're going to offer 20+ flavors of soft serve they really should keep their machines working :-( We don't go out for ice cream much, so they fact that it's broken almost every time we go tells me that it must be broken quite often. The least they could do is add the fact they don't have half of their menu so that you can go elsewhere and not stand in line for 30 minutes. So they want to make sure you can pay but don't care if you can't get what you went there for. Very frustrating. We're very disappointed because we've been big fans of Moo's since they opened. The last couple of years it's just not the same. I've lost track of how many times we've gone back thinking there's no way it could happen again. Second time visiting this business. First time was last year, I recall it made no mark on me, which is why I didn't write a review. As soon as I stepped into the sitting area, I recall that the over powering scent of bleach distracts from any pleasant experience at all. It made me so nauseous I wanted to leave. As a nurse, I loooove bleach/clean/germ awareness, but this was overboard. The ice cream was $17 for one scoop, two small, one small soft serve. You know that one place in every town that everyone in the town swears is "the best (insert food here) anywhere around"! Well, that's what Moo's Place is in Derry, NH. Don't believe me? Well the majority of 4 and 5 star reviews on Yelp are from people in where else? Derry. First, the atmosphere and layout of the place is bizarre. 3 windows stretch the length of the building, but the eating area inside is roughly the size of my kitchen at home. There are 5 tables and it can fit about 18-20 people if you're squeezed in tight. The service is the typical high school kids, they don't pay attention to you unless you wave them down. It's not untypical, but it's annoying. The prices are high and what you get for it is not much. My first time here, I reminded the girl I had ordered a medium cup after being handed what looked like a kiddie size and was told, "That's our medium". As for the ice cream itself, it's just bad, and I mean very bad, in the sense it really doesn't have much flavor to it. It's just like other ice cream as in when I'm eating it, it has the coldness and texture of ice cream, I just don't taste anything more than a hint of what it's supposed to taste like. This is a consistent thing each time I go. Also, there is a weird soapy aftertaste to the ice cream which makes me wonder how or with what they clean their machines because they obviously aren't doing a good job. Unless Palmolive is a secret ingredient, there's something wrong with how they make it. I'm glad to see Hodgies getting the comparison's with this place because Hodgies is an institution known throughout the area, this is just the Derry townies place to be proud of because there isn't really much else in Derry in terms of food period, much less quality. One second very few people around, then you blink and there's a crowd. Ordering was a bit haphazard. There are three sets of windows with order and pickup windows for each set. People got confused when a staff member popped their head out one side instead of the other depending on whether they were taking an order, or passing out some cold treat. Did they miss the "Order" and "Pick-Up" signs? Staff didn't always help, because they might deliver your order out a pick up window that was not next to the order window you were at.
