However, we went for something unique to Hazel's instead we got: - Hazel's hash $16 - The peppers, jalapenos, and chorizo make this dish pack full of flavour and lighter and more unique than just eggs with potatoes. I mean, they put their name on it, so it's good! - Caker $15 - I didn't expect I'll like the Caker as much as I did. The sweet and savoury works! I love the moist pancake drizzled with some maple syrup. I'm usually not a big fan of plain bacon since it can get overly salty, but the combination with egg and pancake balances the flavours here, making it super comforting. Laaren, who took our call and served us, was full of energy and friendly, which tops the whole experience. We asked and learned more about him and found out it's just his first month at work. Large portions of breakfast in a friendly atmosphere, which is always a perfect way to start any weekend. I had 'The Caker', which is egg, cheese and bacon wrapped in a pancake. It appears that there's not too many breakfast joints that open up early close to us, so we ventured to North York for some early morning grub. Hazel's is a typical diner with old, dated mismatched furniture with a friendly and efficient hostess/waitress that keeps your coffee cup constantly topped off (diner quality drip coffee). Here's where it breaks the mold: a bold and creative menu that pairs different flavors that you wouldn't expect. THE BEST example was my Eggs Natasha with poached eggs, smoked salmon, on top of pancakes, covered in hollandaise, a dollop of sour cream and topped with a little bit of caviar. Oh my! I ordered this because the description peaked my interest. I was surprised and delighted that the flavors complimented each other so well: salty, sweet and savoury. I thoroughly enjoyed the pancake underneath that was light, fluffy and delicious. It came with a side of home fries that tasted decent but were too soft and missing the crispy edges that I like. Hubby ordered the Hazel Hash: 3 eggs, potato, corn, ground chourico, onions, (bell) peppers, jalapeño served with a side of buttered Texas toast. It was alright, not very spicy at all with a pool of orange grease at the bottom of the plate. They do need to clean up a bit with it's coffee stained menus and a few fruit flies buzzing about. Whoever renovated the wash rooms (looks newer) needs to redecorate the main dining area with some modern furnishings and splashes of color. Have been going to this resto for years , mostly Sunday brunch. The food is good, as are the price points and service. It is a good neighbourhood diner. I am OK with the change in ownership. It happens. However, these days, it is always so cold inside. We have mentioned this to them before. They appear to have a problem regulating the AC and cold air flow. They explain it is because the kitchen gets so hot. That may be but customer comfort is important, I see many customers putting on sweaters and jackets if they have them. Today was exceptionally cold inside, not a good experience. we were glad to leave and will not be returning. read more

I'm so torn in giving this review. I wanted to love this place, especially with how cute it looks and the raving yelp reviews. The meal started off great. The place was packed and our waitress was running around but still attentive. She recommended the TPA Benny to me over the Natasha. Naturally, i went with the recommendation and expected an eggs Benedict with tomato, potato, arugala and asparagus (atypical ingredients for an eggs benedict but hey, I was interested). What I got was a really weird salad to put it nicely. It was a layer of arugula, then 4 slices of tomato, a ring of crispy potato, 5 stalks of really chewy asparagus, and then two poached eggs with hollandaise. The asparagus was so bad I had to spit it out. The hollaindaise was too eggy. But mostly it was just such a weird dish. This restaurant is known as "Best of 2016". Don't know why it happens to me all the time. Again! Line up at the door at 11:40 am. Waited for about 30 minutes and then I finally got a table for two. My husband and I ordered beverages first. I ordered a glass of grapefruit juice and my husband ordered a cup of coffee. Yes! It's nothing special about these beverages. But the grapefruit juice is freshly squeezed and it tasted sweet. $5 for a glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, what a deal! The cream that goes with my husband's coffee is also freshly made. It's not from a package as normally seen in other restaurants and it's smooth. So far, everything is fresh! We also ordered an Egg Natasha to share. There were two small slices of pancake as the bases, then smoked salmon slices on top of the pancakes, followed by two poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and black claviers. Home fries should come on the side but we substituted it with poutine, $2 extra. Also, we ordered smoked beans on the side. Overall, the dish was pretty good. One of the poached eggs was a bit overcooked. Perhaps I was a bit demanding, I was expecting yolk overflowing in liquid form when I sliced on the egg. The other one was perfect though. Other than that, the egg Natasha was good. I could taste honey in the beans and it was great. Poutine was good except the gravy was a bit salty to my taste. read more

I'm a huge fan of diners! I love how unpretentious they are. I love how they offer good 'ol comfort food - usually large portions, at a reasonable price. I like how predictable they are, with their traditional booths and inauspicious decor and down-to-earth servers. There's nothing I don't like about diners. My kid and I arrived early here to meet my friend for breakfast recently. I specifically came early to arrange with the waitress to please present me with the bill after we've eaten - NOT my friend (who was doing SO much for us, including putting us up in his home. I did NOT want him to pay for our breakfast; I wanted to treat HIM). Anyhow, the waitress agreed, and we all had a marvelous, traditional, home-spun home-cooked breakfast meal (eggs, toast, hash browns, bacon - OMG the bacon was good! But so much!), and great coffee. Hazel's is a super clean greasy spoon with menu items perfect for a weekend brunch. Service was excellent; coffee, tea, and water refills came often. I was approached by the owner of this establishment following a negative online interaction with one of his staff. He handled it with integrity and honesty and I am appreciative of the way the situation was handled. My experience here was good but the way the owner handled the situation was great. I was called bad names by his staff but he took ownership, which is a very respectful thing to do. Given the owners response, I feel as though my needs have been met and that based on the food and the attention by the owner, this place deserves a solid 4*. See my original review about the food. Initial impression: no one acknowledged us for a a good 5 minutes before we were seated. One server passed us multiple times and nothing. When we were finally seated, another server was very nice and pleasant and took our order (she later asks us how our meal is during our meal which was nice) The first server disappointingly plops our plates on the table. Didn't ask who's was who and literally just plops it down and leaves. That just left a bad taste in my mouth and although the food was good, I was not happy about this particular server. Been here several times and this time definitely did not disappoint! It's probably because we came here at 9 AM, but we had no wait and were seating right away. The waitresses were attentive throughout our meal in asking how we were doing and making sure our cups were refilled of water. My go-to item is normally the Natasha Benedict, but this time I decided to get one of their specials: Hazel's Hash. I was so glad I did. I twas a chorizo sausage and jalapeno pepper hash with home fries and 3 eggs (in any style). It was tasty and delicious and a good portion. My friend got the Mexican Benedict, which was also quite tasty. I liked the corn biscuit. And my other friend got the Smoked Salmon & Avocado omelette (egg-white omelette). We used to come here for weekend brunch every few months. So we recommended it for a lunch today for my brother-in-law and his wife. I don't know if it's under new ownership, but it was not good. I give it two stars because the food was edible. The waitress may have been training, but no one was shadowing her and it wasn't that busy. We waited about forty-five minutes and were told twice that it would only be "four or five minutes." The wait staff never checked on our water, barely checked on our coffee, and when the food eventually did arrive, the orders were wrong and incomplete, which we'd had to point out to them. When the checks arrived, ours was correct, but my brother-in-laws was filled with wrong orders that had been voided. I get it may be difficult training new people when you take over a business, but this was just a bad experience. And we could have forgiven a lot if the food was up to what we were used to, but it simply wasn't. I hope they get it together, because it's a great little space and has a history. read more

TL;DR Cozy atmosphere, love the decor and lighting, service is very very friendly, the food is pay what you get for and perfect to have brunch dates. Friendly neighbourhood and family vibes going on. This experience was a little awkward for me mostly because me and my friend weren't sure if we should have waited to be seated or just sit down anywhere we liked because the waiter was no where to be found. It was okay after we invited ourself to seat oursellves at the taller tables by the and the waiter seemed inviting and also as though guests who seat themselves in is a normal thing. I ordered the Natasha's and because they used pancakes it was such a sweet twist that I loved it so much. I really enjoyed their pancakes, but I'm not gunna lie, I've had better pancakes and these are pretty mom friendly made at best. Not a bad thing because it was very nostalgic of the premade pancake batter my mom used to make pancakes back in the day. The caviar and smoked salmon were nothing too special or crazy to say it was amazing but a very good meal for the price. Loved the poached eggs very muchand the hollandaise was perfect. I really love their coffee as FOR ME it was not too watery nor was it too strong in coffee beans. A perfect homey brew for a smooth wake up call in the morning. The potatoes were done nicely, but like I said nothing too spectacular to go crazy for. I mostly enjoyed the atmosphere this place had and the nostalgic food that brings me back into the times of my childhood which is why I gave this place 4 instead of 3 when most of my reviews are very food based and service picky. We found this place on Yelp with the high ratings of this place. There was a bit of a wait for a table, and the service seems a bit on the slower side...it's a bit delayed. We ordered the Eggs Natasha ( wasn't a huge fan) it was good don't get me wrong. However I found everything just mushy. I'm not a huge fan of the mushiness. And my date ordered the regular eggs benny. Nothing to report there, was good. Food took a while to arrive (like 30 min?) but it was good. Freshly squeezed OJ was expensive. I'm talking about $5+. Even if it was organic (I'm assuming it is), $5+ doesn't really justify for the price, given that Hazel's isn't really an upscale place. Portions were generous and food was good. I did not get free coffee refill so that was disappointing. Friend ordered the french toast. He said it was light and cinnamon-y. He appeared to be satisfied. I took my parents there while they were in town on a stop over for their anniversary and it did not disappoint!
