First and foremost, this was my wife's "want." I was opting for a garage remodel first, but we all know who won. Nate was the first quote we had received. He quoted a 12x12 area and a 12x23 for our back patio. With his suggestion we also received a quote for a chimney resurface as the wood stain color wouldn't look very appealing with red/orange brick. Our choice was to not only to go with Nate out of the two individual quotes, but to go with the 12x12 pergola and the chimney to stay within our budget. Small job, BIG RESULTS! Our home in Laguna Niguel was built in the 70's, and of course everything that was "standard" back then is no longer standard today. A small utility closet outside our house was no exception, as the vented door (made of particle board) lasted maybe 5 years and was literally hanging by a thread. After fruitless searches on the internet, I knew we needed a new custom door that would last for a long time. I found Nate Halverson on Yelp, and called him up. He answered right away, and I couldn't believe he came over within an hour to inspect the situation. He was super friendly, courteous, and efficient. After a few measurements, he had a very reasonable quote to me that same night for a custom redwood door. This thing of beauty was fabricated in less than a week. As this was happening, I was prepping the wooden door frame for a new paint job and installation of the door. Unfortunately, I found out that the 30+ year old frame had rotted in the bottom corner, and it was so damp I could easily pull the fibers of wood out with my fingers. I called Nate right away and told him what I found and it might be a problem for the installation. "No problem," he said. Nate reassured me his guy could easily replace that section of the frame when he installed the door. The change order was nominal, and I was stoked because everyone knows how a little project can often amplify into a much bigger cost than anticipated. This was not the case! Nate's team handled the frame repair quickly, and installed the door the same day. I never thought a vented utility closet door could look so damn good, but with the wood grain and stain, we couldn't be happier with the results. Moreover, this was a teeny tiny job for Nate and crew, but he was more than happy to help us out with a smile and great service. Many others turned us down, in fact. Beyond the quality work, what solidified my trust in the Halverson crew was their responsiveness the next day when the gas meter in the utility closet suddenly started making a loud vibrating sound. Very weird and concerning. Given the timing, I thought the door installation had somehow upset the gas meter, and so I called Nate up. He came over the very next morning with two other guys and inspected the meter. Turns out it was just a super old meter regulator that went bad at the same time coincidentally. The Gas company was out the same day and replaced it...problem solved. Point is, it meant a lot that after the job was over, and even after Nate was paid, they brought an army out to make sure we were ok. Now that is solid, reliable service!!!! I asked Nate to make a table I'd seen on his site. The picture on his site had the table outside. But the table I wanted was an inside table for my dining room. He came over and measured the space. We decided on a color and size. 10 days later he delivered my table and I was very excited. After he left I noticed rather large gaps between the planks of wood. Big enough to see all the way to the floor. Also there is hardware detail on the corners and the screw heads are not flush. They stick out quite a bit. The nails holes are visible on the legs and the base construction is not flush at all. I called him to explain that I at least need the gaps fixed as it's a dining room table and crumbs and food are going to get stuck in there. He said he built the table I wanted. I explained I couldn't clearly see the top of the table from his website picture and this issue would prevent the table from functioning well as a dining table. I just kept telling me he built the table I wanted. I asked him to fix the gaps or caulk them or something. I was willing to deal with the other stuff if he could fix the gaps and chalk it up to a learning experience. He finally agreed to put a polyurethane coating on it and fill in the gaps. He came over and put my table in my front yard. Sanded it for 5 minutes then put some product in the gaps then told me it was the wrong product. It looked horrible. He said he'd come back the next day and left my table outside. After many days of this he finally said this wasn't going to work. He left my table outside for 2 weeks. Bottom line, he is not a finish carpenter. He used the wrong hardware on my table. One of the legs is wobbly already and I had to buy a new table. I asked to work out a deal many times but the most he would do is gone me half back and take the table back so basically I'm out $1000 with nothing for it. No thanks. Steer clear read more
