I have to agree with the latest reviews. This place is DARLING and the older woman who works here is lovely and caring and skillful. However, the younger one really appears to dislike her job. She doesn't acknowledge customers, respond to requests well (I asked her to cut my nails short and she rolled her eyes?) and generally just seems unhappy and even a little resentful. I hope she's ok. It just makes the experience unpleasant when the person seems unhappy and like they hate their job. (Not suggesting anyone needs to fake a smile, but this borders on just being rude). read more

I've been coming to Head to Toes for years and it's disappointing to say I no longer feel comfortable here. I appreciate the owner's selection of organic polish, a good magazine selection, closed captioned HGTV on, and their cute location. They have a lot of organic polish options. They've cut back on operations in recent years, and are rarely busy. They don't take walk ins, and routinely turn away all but scheduled customers (and not always gently, from what I've witnessed.) The reason I've recently stopped coming is service related. They have two employees: one who is sweet, and one who is skilled but routinely in a sour mood, physically rough with my hands and feet, and can make coming an uncomfortable experience. Pulling and turning my feet if they don't bend to her will, rolling her eyes in annoyance if I'm not in the correct position, once she stopped my service and stared angrily, but didn't offer verbal instructions. It wasn't clear if she needed me to take my feet out of the water? Put them somewhere? What was clear was that she was furious with me, but I was confused as to why. In Yelping I noticed others with similar experiences. The owner is no longer at the shop, and after one too many of these uncomfortable visits, I decided to stop. One angry technician generally doesn't undermine a business, but with just two technicians on hand, it can be hard to avoid a negative experience. read more

I went here with my coworker today and they did a terrible job giving her a gel manicure. The manicure had spots all over it and they painted on the cuticles. When she complained they said, "No, that's just because of how your nail is." They did a good job on my toes but after removing my gel nail polish (which removed while they did my toes) this woman chastised me rudely saying, "You have to tell us if you need gel polish removed. It takes 15 minutes extra and we do not have time. You just said you needed a gel manicure not polish removal." After they aggressively chopped my beautiful long nails off short and filed my nails until I had cuticles hanging off, I said I did not want the gel manicure since they do not have time. They then charged me $15 for the removal on top of the pedicure when I still had polish left on my nails. I am going out tonight so I had to buy fake nails at the drug store to cover my hideous short, over cut/over filed nails. The people were so rude and did a terrible job. They said they had no time but as we left 3 workers were just standing around gossiping in the back. Highly recommend that you do NOT go here! Made an appt for a full set, they put on some plastic tips, painted over them (not even the color I asked for but was in a hurry), tried to charge me an extra $15 for a color I didn't pick. By the next day my entire right hand was off. And not ripped off either. Tried to blame it on my short nails when I regularly get my nails done and never have any issues. Went in for several repairs and again by the next day off again (I didn't do anything for them to come off). Plastic tips broke and the corners after basic household tasks. Not to mention I took my 3 year old in for her birthday and the lady doing her nails told her "you're not going to be beautiful if you mess up for nails" like ???. Not gonna go in for repairs everyday. I paid $160 for basically some press on target nails. Better off going to one of the many shops on 4th. read more

The owner actually lied to everyone reading this review in her response to me below. I did not receive my service on May 14, I actually received it on May 24 at 3pm and my nails were completely peeling by May 28 (four days later when I reached out.) By the time I reached out on May 28, I had already left for vacation abroad and there was no way to simply return to have my nails fixed. A refund was the only option that made sense given that the service, quite frankly, was really poor. Another alternative would have been an offer to perform the same service free of charge upon my return. Instead, the owner is lying in her response instead of taking ownership. AMAZING! I just moved from LA to Marin and i was looking for a nail salon that would meet the standards I'm used to. I am so happy I found this gem :) I called ahead to make an appointment and when I arrived they sat me right down, helped me with my purse and made the sure water was perfect temperature. Lotsssssss of polishes to choose to from and SUPER CLEAN! This is definitely a spa and not just a nail salon. They don't over book, smells like essential oils (not products), the girls joke around with you and take their time. Another great experience at Head to Toes!! I've been coming for many years and they're just so wonderful! I've even moved out to the east bay and I STILL come all the way out here to San Rafael to get my nails done! I don't trust just any nail salon!!! They are welcoming, safe, and do a fabulous job. I made an appointment for 4:00 on a Thursday, for a Gel Mani and traditional pedi. They were able to take care of me right away, and really took the time and care to make sure everything looked right. The place is clean, they're still wearing masks, and everything still looks in good condition! They're nail selection is extensive, and if you don't want to use an open one, they have some colors for sale. I seriously would send anyone here in a heartbeat! Make sure to make an appointment. Yesterday I saw Tracy (Tien) for the 4th or 5th time. She's always been cold and moody, never greeted me or smiled but I generally didn't mind as she did a good gel. However yesterday she was downright rude and made me uncomfortable. She was scratching quite hard at one of my nails to remove gel, which is all normal and I understand part of the removal (I've been getting gels regularly for 6+ years), but I just gently said "do you want to soak it more?" and after a dramatic silence she barked at me "I know what I'm doing!". I couldn't believe it. When you're in a customer facing business you simply cannot treat customers that way. She scared me away and I will not be back to Head to Toes because of her. read more

I DO NOT RECOMMEND Head to Toes Salon Spa for acrylic nails! This place only demonstrates top customer service for their well known clientele. Being a new customer it's very important to feel welcomed to your establishment. I felt like an outsider that received bare minimum service! Prior to getting my fill and pedicure I asked the owner where the price list was and she replied " it's only online" which was interesting! I was not happy with that response. I was curious because I wanted to know what type of pedicure options were provided. I ended up getting a basic pedi without an upgrade because no one wanted to do their job and up-sale me to create a better customer experience. So I didn't get an option to choose from one of many scrubs they offered that were displayed on their wall. Being that this nail salon was clean and appeared to do good work I proceeded to get my services done. The lady that did my pedicure didn't ask me my name or tell me hers; nor talk to me besides barking orders and being very aggressive with my feet. I had to tell her to be gentle! Overall she did a decent pedicure, but, I would of liked her to scrub my feet better. I still had dead skin on my feet once she was done. The lady that did my fill was sweet but she was horrible at doing acrylic work. She new I had acrylic nails on and she told me " no one uses acrylic anymore" and proceeded to glob this weird gel on top of my nails. I wanted chrome polish and her technique was awful! Which left the chrome uneven in addition to looking like I had jelly beans on my nails because the gel was so thick and not filed correctly. Shortly after I left the salon the chrome was chipping. I know I wrote a long review but I want to prevent the next person from paying $116 for subpar service & work. I definitely won't recommend this place or go back. read more

Found this place for a pedi ire on Mother's Day. A lot of places are closed on Sunday. I'm now hooked. Really nice environment with very friendly happy staff. A tv, great music, comfy massage chairs, an herbal spa pedicure option and skincare. Currently only waxing but will offer facials soon. Very delighted to have found this gem in an old charming home. I got my nails done today and I'm so glad I came here to give them a try. I got a gel removal, gel manicure and regular pedicure. I usually go to a place down the street from my house but my clients rave about this place. So, here I am:) I love how clean and sanitary the salon is and their tools are disinfected and stored in plastic disposable packaging. I'm an esthetician so I know a clean business when I see one. They were very nice, but I didn't expect to pay $60 + 12 tip for a REGULAR mani/pedi although they do post their prices. Maybe if it was a unique experience, but it was not. They did nothing out of the ordinary, and I even had to make sure that she didn't rush through my manicure because she wanted to move on to the next person even though I was on time for my appointment. There was a 30 second message on legs and hands. Had to ask for a third coat on some of my nails because the polish wasn't being applied evenly. I've had better mani/ pedi for less. My friend and I found Head To Toes from its other Yelp reviews, and we were so glad we did! The space is a converted home (with a parking lot in back!), and with lots of daylight coming in through the windows. It felt fresh and open there. They fit us both in for last minute appointments, and we were happy to discover, not only did they have real pedicure chairs with massagers in them (these are surprisingly hard to come by in Marin), but they also did a lotion massage on you with hot stones as part of your manicure and/or pedicure! Felt so nice. The only downfall is the person doing my pedicure had a mask on and wasn't projecting his voice over it, and I could barely hear him whenever he said anything. I had to ask him to repeat it several times, and felt really bad but I couldn't understand what he was asking me. He also was constantly looking around the room at something else, and seemed really bored the whole time. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he should be happy-go-lucky about it, I'm sure there's other things he'd rather be doing, but it was distracting and made me feel bad and not enjoy the experience as much. One thing that was really great though, he tested the nail polish I selected and showed it to me, because it ended up being much lighter than it looked in the bottle. It was really great for him to do that, because I was able to get up and select a different color. Very much appreciated. All in all I really liked this place, and I plan on going back again next time. read more

Im never coming back! Ive been to your place more than a dozen times and i was not only charged to remove the gel on my nails, but the gal who did them left the worst file job i have ever seem. In the end she charged me $40 big ones for only a gel manicure. Polish is all over my nail beds and she was beyond lazy. I was stunned to see that she didnt individually wrap each nail to remove the polish, but was lazy about removing the acetone and merely put nail softner before working on the cuticle. Lazy!!!! I asked her, are you going to use water or wash the acetone off? I then washed my hands so i wouldnt have a harsh chemical left on my hands. I think your new sign has brought bad luck. Not only did I take down my glowing review from the past, but Im so furious at being overcharged. Im leaving a 1 star. Lastly she took 60 minutes for a terrible job. Warm and welcoming staff. Excellent mani/ pedi. Love the ambiance-massage chair is relaxing. Clean and well maintained. This was my first impression when I first started coming. I like the spa pedicure. The one that cost I think 50.00. Most of my experiences have been with the manager or owner not sure which. She is amazing, nice, and caring. I have been coming her for about a year now. The last three times have been thumbs down. I am paying a high price for the 50.00 pedicure and it has been not good. It feels rushed and not relaxing. This last time I got the regular pedicure and there is no difference except they use essential oils and exfoliate, with some nice scrubs. Very rushed. Why I am giving three stars... my toe nails were dry so I asked for no polish. The tech left them not buffed or shined. They looked awful. I went home and had to buff and shine my freshly done toes myself! Such a bummer. read more

I have been coming to see Hai at Head to Toes Salon since her time at her Larkspur Landing location-over 15 years now! They are the ONLY salon I've been to that are gentle with your nail beds when doing a gel mani. That is so important to me now. I had very thin nails due to aggressive treatment at other nail Salons but now my nails have become so strong since Hai or Rachelle have been working on them. They also have the fabulous Quyen (pronounced Quinn) who does wonderful hair removal and skin care. Their salon is the lovely blue house on 2nd Street in San Rafael right next to Reilly's Auto and they have their own parking lot in back. Hai is the sweetest person you could ever meet and is detailed oriented when she does your nails. Rachelle is the same way and I can really tell that they take great care to make the finished product perfect! Prices are very reasonable too which just adds to my love for Head To Toes Salon. read more

This is the second time I've gone to head to toes for a gel manicure, & I have not been disappointed. I saw Lisa both times and she did a fantastic job. The manicure lasts and still looks good by the end of the two weeks when I'm ready for a change. I've never left a yelp review before but I couldn't help it today. Lisa was so friendly and pure genius when she suggested my silver disco ball nail to give the natural color a pop (see picture I posted). It was a simple suggestion but it just made my manicure more fun and I didn't get charged like I have at other salons. Even she was excited about it, which just made me that much happier about my choice to roll with what she wanted to do. I'm probably not the best person to judge, but... My wife's been trying to talk me into getting a pedicure for some time now - and by that, I mean since we met. I see her point, my feet are nasty, with calluses thick enough that I don't really need shoes. Toenails that don't really need to be discussed among rational adults. Suffice to say, I really shouldn't wear flip flops as much as I do. So when Halloween rolled around, and I somehow ended up going out dressed as St. Pauli Girl (don't ask), I found myself in here with the missus, getting my one and only mani-pedi. I'm not sure why I haven't gone before. And as I tap this out, I'm not sure why I haven't gone back. The lady that took care of me, Rose, didn't flinch at all when she was presented with my nasty, cheesy, stinky hobbit feet. She soaked them, massaged them, cleaned them up, de-funkified them, and changed them in ways I didn't think possible. Despite my wife's constant protests, I never had issue with the state of my tootsies, but after 20 minutes in Rose's hands, they looked like someone else's feet. Then came the fingernails. Same thing, luxurious hand massage, cleaned up the nails, made 'em look awesome. Didn't even flinch when I sheepishly told her I was getting fire engine red nail polish slapped on there. The assembled ladies getting their nails done giggled and hee-heed (my wife leading the way) as my nails were painted, with me sitting there wanting the ground to swallow me whole. But - and this is probably something I need to discuss with a therapist - at the end of it all they looked great, and a part of me didn't want to take the polish off after tottering around the City in my ridiculous outfit. For about an hour of severe pampering? $35. I'm super picky about my mani pedi's and today on my way back up north, I decided to stop in San Rafael and give this place a try. Not only do they give great mani pedi's, they are friendly in an honest way and they( the two great women who worked magic on my fingers and toes) have a sense of humor which I know is not a major essential component for a nail salon, how great to have that kind of energy in a nail salon! Why haven't I heard of this place before? maybe their prices? but so worth it! This place has all that I look for in a nail salon and more. They have massage chairs. They take their instruments from a sterilized pouch. They wear gloves and a sometimes a mask. They fit us in to the schedule on short notice with no problem but they were never slow. This is important because when they are slow, you end up staying there for 2-3 hours for a mani/pedi! They were time efficient and one lady did my toes while they other lady did my nails. They had hot stones to massage with! ahhhh The lady who did my pedi was so gentle! She was handling each toes with care and I'm usually very ticklish. She made sure I was comfortable. She was so sweet and understanding and did a great job! Veery patient too. When my nails were getting done at the same time, instead of making me reach my other hand all the way over to her and get a cramp in my side like most places, the lady put a pillow on my lap and did the opposite hand there! so comfortable! The guy doing my friends nails even noticed that her toe color she picked out might not be dark enough and asked if she would like to change it before he did the rest. I was in SR on business and needed a manicure. I yelped HEAD TO TOES and because they had good reviews, I gave them a try. I CALLED AND THE WOMAN ON THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE SAID THEY COULD TAKE ME NOW. GREAT! When I arrived, I was asked to pick out a color and they would take me in a minute. A minute later a few other ladies walked in and were told to pick out their color, too. The other ladies were taken ahead of me and then I was told by the woman at the reception desk that they WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO TAKE ME AT ALL!!! They didn't even try to apologize or make a good-will gesture by telling me when they could do my nails later that day or the next day or whenever! RUDE!!! I understand places are busy.. But when someone calls to check availability, that is the time to tell them that you CAN or CAN NOT take them. All in all the experience stunk and I left thinking I would NEVER return. I am so glad this place exists. I was really worried when I moved to Marin last year and had to find a new nail spa in the area. The place is very modern and very clean.It does not have that acetone, chemical smell. I love the interior decor and the newness of the places. They also have nice tvs. They always have a current selection of OPI to choose from, which I love. Their prices are very reasonable also. 30 bucks for a mani/pedi. I usually get gel mani, which is more pricey, but they last for at least two weeks. The pedi includes a hot stone massage with oil, which is a definite plus. Get Tom for a pedi, he is great. The manicurists/pedicurists are very professional. They aren't gossiping in vietnamese to each other while doing your nails, like some other salons I have been to. They are also very fast and efficient, so you can be out of there as soon as possible. Most of the time, they have done my mani and pedi at the same time, so I am not here for two hours. Make sure you set an appointment ahead of time, as they are always busy. Also tip in cash! read more
