This is one of my go-to places to eat! Heart & Soy and Roots share a kitchen but have two separate dining rooms. Heart & Soy is more of a casual dining room where you order at the counter and grab your own drinkers. Whereas Roots, you have a server and a whole dining experience. You can order from either menu no matter which room you decide to sit in. I typically eat vegan and gluten-free. There are a variety of items available for all diets and a lot of their items can be made vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free! They even have desserts, chocolate bars, and vegan jerky. I've had a few of the chocolate bars and they are delicious! They haven't had the pistachio chocolate bars that are usually in the fridge in a while but if you happen to see them in there GET THEM. It's my favorite appetizer ;) I got the Japanese Eggplant Curry today with a side of White Rice. I love the comforting, curry flavor of this and they cook the eggplant perfectly every time. For quick service goodness, anyone seeking vegetarian Asian cuisine is going to be very very happy at Heart & Soy. They even have a fridge up front if you want to grab & go cookies (the gingersnap cream cheese sandwich has my heart) or various parfait/puddings (omg the mango tapioca!) and drinks too, like Vietnamese coffee (not dairy-free due to the condensed milk). Now let's talk about the tofu. Generally, tofu is one of my favorite things in life and H&S makes theirs in-house. I'd say you must order something that features it and the option that is in a league of its own would be the sweet rice balls. They are crispy and come in a sauce that is more savory than sweet which I prefer. I also enjoyed the green beans & tofu so much that I ate the entire thing, and that's after demolishing those rice cakes. I wastefully got an unnecessary side of rice too which I won't do next time. I dined in b/c it was a little too far from my hotel to justify bringing it back there and while there are tables, it's really a place I'd opt to dine in out of necessity. I dined in for lunch this week at Heart & Soy, and as usual it didn't disappoint. On street parking was hard to find during the lunch hour, but I parked down a nearby street. When you arrive you have two choices to enter, either to Heart & Soy or Roots. We chose Heart & Soy for a more low key lunch. When we arrived, most of the tables were available. We were provided a menu and walked to the front to place an order. I ordered the rice noodles with egg roll and added tofu - with the extra tofu the price was $14+, which is a little more than I usually like to spend. The restaurant is simple and is mostly run by two people. After we ordered we were provided water cups, which I appreciated, and took a seat. We didn't wait long for our meals to arrive. The staff asked if I wanted spicy sauce, which I appreciated. The meal was delicious, fresh and filling! I'd highly recommend most of the items on the menu. The food was incredible and I don't say that lightly. I'm not even vegan, but was traveling with vegan friends and we were really excited to come across this gem not too far off our route. We tried quite a bit and nothing there was nothing to critique! The pad Thai didn't quite taste like traditional pad Thai, but was delicious, the pho was a delight. Our vegan friends are Laotian and haven't found vegan pho unless they make it themselves so they were so happy! The lemongrass added such a great bright flavor to it, like a warm hug! The egg rolls were some of my favorite I've ever had- and I can't remember my entree but it was delicious too! The mango pudding was probably my favorite. A place like this doesn't have to be good. Vegetarian food is not exactly prevalent in Kentucky (though Louisville is definitely a hub), but if they churned out some kind of okay, tasteless, generic food they could still get three or four stars from me anyway. But this place makes its own tofu, and as with anything else, you can taste freshness. The dishes I ordered were a set of green beans in a legit fermented black bean sauce with garlic, and a Vietnamese style spicy noodle soup. Despite being a lower price, the soup was gigantic and had a mix of tofu and fresh greens in it; it was more savory than spicy though there was a bit of kick. My green beans were delicious, and I was perfectly fine with rice not being included. I didn't want filler, I wanted the good stuff. And that was kind of my conclusion here. For a vegetarian, I don't eat a ton of soy, but like anything, if I'm going to eat it, I want it to be quality stuff. Definitely would be happy to come back here and forage through the rest of the menu. Of note, the adjoining restaurant is under the same umbrella and has a slightly more hipster vibe. I would also note that this place is vegetarian, not vegan, not that it's difficult to avoid the dairy items and egg noodles if you choose. read more

This place was incredible. All I can seem to think about is that they make their own tofu. How cool is that? In addition to making their own tofu, the had a beautiful stash of takeaway items available in the front cooler like taro pudding and a delicious mango rice pudding (wishing I bought more of this). I also picked up a container of the pickled veggies which leaned on the sweeter side. The fair prices make this the kind of spot that I would visit near weekly given that its healthy, refreshing and guilt free. I ended up ordering the pad thai, the spring rolls and the light and refreshing pho. The pho was my favorite- the broth was lighter than most other versions and it was packed with two types of tofu and vegetables aplenty. I will definitely make this a go-to during every Lou visit. I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile. Honestly, I'm not sure why I waited so long and I have major regrets! I enjoyed both dishes I tried AND the recommended tea. We ordered the crispy shiitake mushroom, Hue spicy noodle soup, and Rooibos sweet almond tea. I'm a huge mushroom fan and they did not skimp on the mushrooms in this flavor packed dish (this is basically a stir fry mushroom dish). The hue spicy noodle was decent, very refreshing flavors. I thought it might be a play on bun bo hue--which I LOVE. But, I was not let down at all. They are significantly different though, I enjoyed the lightness of their hue noodles. I've never had rooibos tea...and now I'm hooked. Plus, it's caffeine free, huge win! I can't wait to go back and try other flavors. read more

Went to Heart and Soy to pick up supper for me and my wife. Ordered the spring rolls, sweet rice balls, fried shiitake mushrooms and the Vietnamese noodle bowl. Also got faux fudge for wife and a lemon bar for me. Now, I'm going to be completely honest with you, I have never had vegan or vegetarian food from a restaurant before besides maybe a salad, so I had my doubts. They were completely blown out of the water! The spring rolls were delicious, and while they had tofu in them you really can't tell the difference. The sweet rice balls looked a lot like potato latkes but were very tasty and had a decent vegetable filling. For the entrees, the only thing that was a slight negative was the fried shiitake mushrooms. There were a lot of peppers and onions in it...not a lot of mushrooms. But the flavor was good, so it made up for it. The Vietnamese noodle bowl was awesome! The vegetables were so fresh, the tofu was fried and actually tasted good (almost seemed like fried chicken) and the noodles were delicious. It was a really good entree. The faux fudge was really tasty and the lemon bar, while a little too tart for my tastes, was good as well. The service was great, with the older lady at the register being very helpful with our order. The look of the restaurant (as well as Roots next door) have a minimalist look to them and I think it's great. Very quiet and nice restaurant. Definitely recommend! read more

I had crispy tofu w dipping sauce and tofu pad thai--the staff asked me if its ok to have crushed peanuts and if I want chili sauce. She was so sweet. Ordered Singapore noodle to go. While pad thai was not the quality of Thai restaurants, it was their healthy vers and very filling. Honestly it was very hard to choose because the whole menu is so tempting I wanted to try all if possible! The sauce on the vegetables was absolutely delicious, should have ordered rice on the side! The taro pudding had an interesting consistency - it was more like dough, than a standard pudding. The food is probably some of the best in Louisville! It is all vegetarian, and all so very very fresh. The ingredients are high quality, but the food is very affordable, especially for the prices. You can easily get 2-3 servings off of most menu items. The staff is very kind, too. My partner and I go in enough that they recognize us, and always chit-chat a little bit. They always seem genuinely happy to see any customer. It's super welcoming. I really like the Vietnamese coffee, and the ginger snaps. The entrees are also very good, as I said, but these are just really nice grab and go treats. The coffee is really strong and an excellent pick-me-up.
