Eggroll & Rice Noodle With Tofu and egg roll
    Kyle E.

I dined in for lunch this week at Heart & Soy, and as usual it didn't disappoint. On street parking was hard to find during the lunch hour, but I parked down a nearby street. When you arrive you have two choices to enter, either to Heart & Soy or Roots. We chose Heart & Soy for a more low key lunch. When we arrived, most of the tables were available. We were provided a menu and walked to the front to place an order. I ordered the rice noodles with egg roll and added tofu - with the extra tofu the price was $14+, which is a little more than I usually like to spend. The restaurant is simple and is mostly run by two people. After we ordered we were provided water cups, which I appreciated, and took a seat. We didn't wait long for our meals to arrive. The staff asked if I wanted spicy sauce, which I appreciated. The meal was delicious, fresh and filling! I'd highly recommend most of the items on the menu. If you're looking for a low key vegetarian meal, stop by Heart & Soy in the Highlands.

    BBQ Tofu Sandwich

As soon as I knew I'd be coming to Louisville, the first thing I thought of was how excited I was to get one of my favorite sandwiches ever!! It was just like I remembered, and is a must-try if you still haven't had one. Such fresh and crispy vegetables + herbs and INCREDIBLE thin bbq tofu strips with the perfect banh mi (Vietnamese baguette). Creamy, light layer of aioli. This sandwich is legitimately perfect and I haven't found anything similar as good as it yet in NYC ! Friend loved the vegetable fried rice as well as her BBQ Tofu sandwich. The only thing I regret was that I didn't devour a few more of them!!

Everything here is fresh and delicious. There's really something for every vegan and vegetarian. The restaurant is always clean and inviting. Great spot for lunch or dinner!

The food was incredible and I don't say that lightly. I'm not even vegan, but was traveling with vegan friends and we were really excited to come across this gem not too far off our route. We tried quite a bit and nothing there was nothing to critique! The pad Thai didn't quite taste like traditional pad Thai, but was delicious, the pho was a delight. Our vegan friends are Laotian and haven't found vegan pho unless they make it themselves so they were so happy! The lemongrass added such a great bright flavor to it, like a warm hug! The egg rolls were some of my favorite I've ever had- and I can't remember my entree but it was delicious too! The mango pudding was probably my favorite. I was kicking myself for not buying a second to have the next morning! We tried the bbq banh mi, which she liked. And the vegan cheesecake was top notch! The chai cookie was good and perfect for our swiftie trip. The vegan fudge was also amazing, as a non-vegan fudge lover- I was impressed!

    Fresh green beans and tofu

A place like this doesn't have to be good. Vegetarian food is not exactly prevalent in Kentucky (though Louisville is definitely a hub), but if they churned out some kind of okay, tasteless, generic food they could still get three or four stars from me anyway. But this place makes its own tofu, and as with anything else, you can taste freshness. The dishes I ordered were a set of green beans in a legit fermented black bean sauce with garlic, and a Vietnamese style spicy noodle soup. Despite being a lower price, the soup was gigantic and had a mix of tofu and fresh greens in it; it was more savory than spicy though there was a bit of kick. My green beans were delicious, and I was perfectly fine with rice not being included. I didn't want filler, I wanted the good stuff. And that was kind of my conclusion here. For a vegetarian, I don't eat a ton of soy, but like anything, if I'm going to eat it, I want it to be quality stuff. Definitely would be happy to come back here and forage through the rest of the menu. Of note, the adjoining restaurant is under the same umbrella and has a slightly more hipster vibe. I would also note that this place is vegetarian, not vegan, not that it's difficult to avoid the dairy items and egg noodles if you choose.

I almost always get the Wake Up Burrito, which is loaded and satisfying, but I've heard great things about the breakfast sando, chilaquiles, and pancakes from friends too. The space has a cool, artistic vibe, the staff is welcoming, and it's the kind of place you want to linger at with a second cup of coffee. Whether you're a local or visiting, put this on your list!

I went to Foko after hearing nonstop hype about it being one of the absolute best breakfast spots…read morein Louisville. The place is positioned as this incredible Mexican breakfast destination, so I figured it had to be something special. Turns out it's just standard Mexican food and drinks. Even if they were using using "the freshest most highest quality ingredients", it doesn't show in the final product at all. Heres what i got: The Espresso Martini ($14) was actually decent--nice and foamy with a solid chocolate note. The Carajillo ($8), on the other hand, was weak. It tasted like plain iced coffee with zero detectable alcohol. I wouldn't order it again. The Wake Up Burrito $14: their biggest hype item. I got it and added chorizo for $3.50, bringing the total to nearly $17.50. It's sausage, cheese, eggs, and beans wrapped up--pretty good, but nothing groundbreaking. Without their green sauce it's completely average, no different from any regular breakfast burrito at a diner. The green sauce itself is what really the only saving grace, but they serve it in tiny thimble-size portions like they're guarding some secret recipe. So for $18 you get a medium-size burrito plus a couple of fried tortillas with cheese on the side. Compare that to mexican spot like Bandito, where the burritos are twice the size and cost much less. This one is seriously overrated. The Chilaquiles - I got the side order of these with the burrito, and were average at best. Just fried tortillas with cheese and a little sauce that had a slightly sour edge. Not bad, but nothing I'd call amazing. I thought to myself, if these had egg and beans(what the main dish has) , would I have been glad to pay $17? The answer is no. Ive had better at the airport. Bottom line: Foko is incredibly overrated. It feels like a tourist trap built for people for those Luisville people who who don't eat much Mexican food and think this is the pinnacle. I get it, the decor is nice and gives that "premium" feel but the prices are way too high for what you actually get. I won't be back.

It doesn't feel like Louisville at all. The place was busy. Atmosphere was inviting. I could definitely hang out there while I eat. I'll try some more of their dishes but I do have a few things to note. The cost: It's downtown so an expectation of higher prices is expected. They do give you a decent portion size but with other options and the ultimate option of bringing your lunch with you, it's going to be hard for me to revisit this place in the future. I do hope I can give their breakfast a try if I'm down there early enough. Even with their breakfast, it better be DOUBLE GOOD because the PNC building has breakfast nearby and you can have an excellent breakfast there for 5-10 bucks. The food: Achiote Chicken Taco Bowl - White rice. Achiote Chicken Thigh. Diced tomato. Monterrey jack cheese. Sour Cream. Tortilla Chips. Avo smash. Cilantro. Charred pepper ranch. It was good but nothing really stuck out about it. Bites had flavor but eventually it turned into a bland dish. I ended up saving it for later time leftovers... but when trying to eat it later on in the day, it had that same bland taste that developed. I think the biggest issue with it was all the smashed avocado. It definitely didn't need so much. It ended up overpowering all the other flavors. It's a good spot to change it up from other options downtown but I can't rave about it until I come across my 'go-to' dish here at some point.

We both ordered our steaks medium rare. My tacos had a beautiful presentation, the meat came out on a skewer and smoking from the hot coals. All toppings were repeated on the plate. The steak was overcooked and tough though. Had a nice smoke to it, but very chewy. My husband enjoyed his burrito but wasn't the best he's ever had.
