While exploring the vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles, my mother and I found ourselves at Hearthstone. There we were greeted by our server, Bob, he was SUPER! He was friendly, personable, knowledgeable, and thoroughly seemed to enjoy his job. We decided to split the $10 for 6 wine tasting (comped if you buy a wine like us). Several delicious wines including a dessert wine but we really enjoyed the Fireside Claret. Small tasting room and really nice outside patio with a wind break wall looking out over a beautiful pasture with cows grazing and the vineyards all around. I fell in love with Hearthstone during a recent weekend getaway. We had decided to enjoy a picnic while wine tasting and a quick search on Yelp the night before led us to Hearthstone Winery. We were lucky to arrive during a lull in visitors and were able to do a little tasting all by ourselves in the tasting room. All of the wines were wonderful, but the 2009 Pearl was quickly voted as a favorite in our group, and we purchased a bottle to enjoy with our picnic. The outdoor seating area is absolutely spectacular, they have a glass wall that serves as a wind break without obstructing the beautiful views...so clever! The outdoor furniture is ideal for a picnic with tables that can accommodate large groups. Our wine and glasses were brought out to us on a beautifully arranged serving tray, it was such a nice touch. The 2009 Pearl was light and refreshing, a perfect accompaniment to our assortment of cheeses, charcuterie, and crudite. Everyone agreed that our informal lunch at Hearthstone was one of the highlights of an already wonderful weekend. The owner and staff in the tasting room were so friendly and welcoming, cheerfully talking about their wines it was clear to us that they love what they do. We even had the chance to meet the staff's dog Brewer, he was such a cutie and it was nice to know that they are pet friendly on the patio. The next time we are wine tasting in Paso Robles Hearthstone will definitely be on my "must stop and buy" list. read more

One of my favorite tastings during this trip to Paso Robles. The tasting room is located on a hillside and has a beautiful view. I love the large wooden doors on the tasting room, it looks and feels like a tasting room. The tasting room itself is not real large, but we had the place to ourselves, which made for a nice tasting. The tasting is $10 for 6 tastings, waved with the purchase of a bottle. We tasted the following: 2010 Pearl - a Rousanne Viognier blend, only one I didn't care for 2010 Pinot Noir - my favorite, we ended up buying a bottle 2009 Grenache - good 2009 Mourvèdre - ok, but I'm not a fan of 100% Mourvèdre 2009 Syrah - good, but not my favorite Syrah from the area 2009 Cabernet Sauvingon Reserve - surprisingly good The tasting room staff is great. We had a nice conversation about pairing wine and cheese, and they ended up recommending a cheese shop in Paso Robles named Vivant. Hearthstone is on my revisit list. read more

This was the most memorable of our 6 stops in the paso area last weekend. For the last 3 years wife and I have been looking for the right wine club to join. After visits to wineries in napa and paso, this was, without question "the one". The staff was very friendly and knowledgable. The thing that solidified our decision was that their wines were great across the spectrum. We started with the "Pearl" and finished with the "Fireside Claret", not many places have great whites and reds across the board. This is a small quiet tasting room with wonderful views and great wine! A small group of us were out for the Wine 4 Paws event over the weekend and the couple working the tasting room was just wonderful. We left with 2 bottles of wine, one Sangiovese and the 2008 Slipstone. They were doing special pricing for the event which was really cool. I wanted to keep this winery a secret, but a great thing has to be shared... Hearthstone is a benchmark. While benchmark has several definitions, hearthstone sets the tone to wine making and is unique in the region. Paso Robles is the only area in the US that is similar to Tuscany as far as soil, climate, and topography. Hearthstone sets the tone in quality of wines that cannot be matched in any of the wineries in the areas. It seems as though other wineries have issues with controlling acidity, or they produce mid level wines that are overpriced. One of the reasons is that they buy the grape outside of the estate sometimes from a different region and bottle whatever comes out for profit. In comparison, hearthstone hand crafted estate grown wines are an artistic expression of winemaking in its best. The passion for excellence and love of wine can be tasted. The wine is complex, rich, and multi layered. I drink the wine slowly, almost chow it, since it provides a multiple sensation of flavors and I want to enjoy each of them. They make anywhere from 100 - 200 cases each year for each of the brands, since the vision is quality and not mass production. Most of the wines they produce are in my top favorite list. My wine collection includes 90% hearthstone. We come to the area twice a year and stop only there. In the past we used to go to other wineries - only to be disappointed. Their wine truly reminds me what life is all about. Joslin and Renee are incredible, the hospitality is great and the surrounding is magnificent. Simple, rustic, and beautiful, Hearthstone was our first encounter of wineries in Paso Robles. Hearthstone made a great first and lasting impression with the staff's friendly service and attentiveness. I began my tasting with the Pearl, part Roussane and Viognier. A light, crisp, and floral white perfect for warm summery days. I also tried the Grenache which was rich and jammy. Profundo, as it is called, is strong in all that is great about Cab Sauv. Cab Franc, Syrah, and Sangiovese. It is so good that we purchased two bottles of this memorable red wine. While interestingly named Primate (not sure why), the Zinfandel and Petit Syrah blend makes for a perfect wine with grilled meats. Serene and perfectly picturesque for a calendar, Hearthstone Estate was a great Paso Robles discovery. We will be sure to return back. read more

What a nice find this was. We enjoyed and joined a few years ago and have been back for tasting and events many times. We have never been disappointed. The staff, owner and winemaker are all warm, friendly and knowledgeable. On those warm summer days, the deck and the view are spectacular, and the temperature is often cooler due to the cooling ocean breeze funneling through the Templeton Gap. Long story: I go on an annual wine tasting trip with my closest friends and family (ranges from 40-50 of us per year) where we visit 3-5 wineries. As much as I enjoy finding different wineries to go to, Hearthstone is always a staple and normally the first place we go. Why? The staff is courteous and knowledgable about their wine (not always the case with other wineries). I enjoy the wine and the atmosphere so much that I go there to do a tasting with my SO the day before We go there with the big group. They are passionate about their wine and it shows; Pearl is my favorite. I came her with my girlfriend and we drove all the way from LA to have a nice little weekend get-away with Hearst Castle and a wine tour with tasting at Hearthstone. We were the only ones there and got extra attention but it was somehow a disappointment. The tour was, in short, standing in front of a couple of vines talking about how badly the vineyard had been taken care of. We paid 35 bucks for the wine tasting and "the tour". 20 bucks would ve been more right. On the other hand a complimentary wine bottle was included - a bottle that we didn t get!!!! The wines and the sight were however good. I guess we re too spoiled with Santa Ynez and the hospitality there. read more
