We chose Heartland for my 98 year old dad who was living in a nursing home setting. The nurse we were assigned was very nice, but that is the end of positive statements about this company. Visits were unpredictable, calls sporadic and orders for supplies a complete nightmare. There was always the feeling that staff would drop in for a few minutes to be able to bill Medicare. It was very apparent that this was a FOR PROFIT outfit. The worst part was how they totally let us down when my dad was actively dying. The nurse (not his regular one) had to leave because her shift was over. No one else was sent to help us deal with this difficult experience. Afterwards we heard NOTHING from Heartland management even after making our feelings known to the regular nurse. CHOSE ANOTHER COMPANY FOR HOSPICE. read more

My husband just died and we could have eased his last few months greatly except we were so put off by Heartland Hospice's heavy handed, pressure sales type of efforts. Kaiser must give you a referral to all hospice groups in your area. Ten minutes later I get a call from an Heartland agent who wants to come immediately and sign my husband and I up for Heartland Hospice. I ask what services will be provided and he states an RN will come every two weeks. I ask about bathing and he states they will teach me how to do it. After a few more questions with even more unsatisfactory answers, I actually say "pardon me, but what benefit is Hospice to me if I continue to try to do it all myself?". His reply is they "manage pain", not an issue in our case. No thanks. Weeks go by and we continue to provide daily care as best we can as a family until a crisis puts us in the ER. They hear our unsatisfactory connection with Heartland and suggest Hospice by the Bay, stating it is imperative we get Hospice help to assist in this process. Hospice by the Bay came immediately, delivered drugs to the house that night, provided equipment to ease his care and both an RN, social worker and, even a health aide to bathe him, all showed up the next day. Turns out Heartland is a FOR PROFIT hospice run be a national health group. They less they do the more they get to keep from the Medicare daily stipend for hospice patients. Hospice by the Bay is a non profit, aided by volunteers and truly encapsulates the hospice experience. Run for the hills far, far away from Heartland. I can not stress this enough. PS: I notice no bad reviews on Yelp so let's see how long this review stays up. There is also no option to notate a Comments section of their website. Just Google profit vs non profit hospice and you will be amazed and alarmed. TERRIBLE CARE. There is never a set schedule for when the nurse or aids are to come out. It seems as if they get to you when it is convenient for them. 80 yr old is bed bound and has not seen a nurse in 6 days. No one has called to check on him. No one has come to fill his meds for the weekend. Supplies are low and a bed rash is growing rapidly. Have called over five times with no call back. If I ask a question the answer is idk and then they become defensive. Shar- extremely rude. Lies about nurse coming out when in fact she hasn't and has not been her since 3/2/16. It's the 21st! When you point out their faults and what they need to do to fix the wrong they counter with tell you to "go back to work". VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Asked how to make a formal complaint. Was told only with her over the phone. Sounds like a conflict of interest to me. After doing some research I have found the complaint line, which I filed, and a investigation is talking place. I will be reporting them for neglect and every other complaint possible. SHAR has been rude to at least 3 ppl who have spoken with her, she needs to be terminated. Because of her we are now going to Hospice By the Bay. read more

I was very pleased with my experience with Heartland. My grandmother was on hospice and living at a facility where a registered nurse would frequent regularly. Towards the end it was clear my grandmother's health status was failing more quickly and needed to be made more comfortable. The RN on that day (Hilary) was compassionate and gentle, and I felt treated the needs of my grandmother at that time (raised her bed and administered atropine to help ease breathing efforts, gave a medication to reduce anxiety, and increased the morphine dose). There may have been other things done that I did not observe, but I was pleased with the response it had on my grandmother as it seemed she began breathing with more ease and appeared more comfortable. I was also very touched that the RN decided to stay with my grandmother even after we decided to leave. In the hardest of moments with losing someone you love, I was happy to have the experience I did with Heartland. My memory of the last moments with my grandmother will be a pleasant one because of them. read more

My friends 90 year old mom is receiving wonderful care with the staff from Heartland Hospice. Mom fell on Saturday and the care she received from Lisa, Lori, Elaine and her caseworker Alex was wonderful. read more

Heartland Hospice descended like vultures on a family member who was recovering from a broken hip in a local nursing facility. He was desperate to go home and they offered him this choice. They have done very little to help him with his injury recovery but instead have treated him only for his terminal cancer. He has been home for almost 3 weeks and has received NO physical therapy. He is 80 years old and No physical therapy has been provided. He is in a wheelchair or in bed. I am trying to convince him to cancel this agency. read more

Yes, Heartland Hospice is like a concierge service to aide the patient whose health is failing AND the caregiver. I found Heartland Hospice in San Rafael to take care of my mom's many needs whether medical, i.e treatment of bed sores, to urinary tract infection, to setting up a easier way for her to eat independently, or just to have someone as a friend to hold her hand. The weekly and bi weekly checks by various staff coming by to visit helps keep the family informed on overall health status so you know exactly what is going on. Heartland provides a "whole team" of caregivers from the most experienced and caring nurse ( Laurie) to the transitions director, to the social worker, and spiritual aides and even aides who are already being trained either though current enrollment in nursing school and EMT. What a crew !! I have been caring for my mom with advanced stage Alzheimer's which can lead to fairly rapid decline . Since she was no longer able to walk or stand, she needed to be in a facility that could handle her condition. Heartland Hospice helped me to know where to turn , and gave me the piece of mind as to the the type of facility that she needed. I was even able to go on a family vacation and not worry. When she had to be treated for an infection, Hospice was right there the evening when she got back , and checked her medication to make sure it was ordered properly. It's now been over 5 months and I can't imagine not having their help and someone to talk to and to lean on. read more

I was recently honored to help a dear friend Hospice at home. I can't speak to the services provided after the initial in home visit from Heartland (Marin) but I can speak to the intake process at home and the final visit upon passing. The first night two nurses came to the home, one a Hospice nurse in training, and another an experienced Hospice nurse. Both were incredibly kind, calm and I would say thorough. Death is not something that comes easy to family members or friends but knowing these nurses were there to walk us through the process was nothing short of remarkable. They answered every question we had and some we didn't even think of. They walked us through the myriad of paperwork and they stayed with us until we were comfortable with what we were about to embark on. Clearly we had asked and received answers to every question and yet they stayed sensing our uneasiness. It wasn't until we got out of our chairs and escorted them to the door that they left. Funny what strikes you after a loved one passes. The night my friend passed the nurse came and pronounced. She was lovely with advice for those inconsolable. She again walked us through the paperwork. She was kind and did not rush through any part of the end. I am greatly appreciative of them and hope they are always blessed considering the task they have at hand everyday. read more

My brother was terminal with cancer and in a fast descent. His case worker, Lana, and the nurse, Kelvin, were exceptional. Not only did they do all that was asked, they offered other assistance and responded well. When my sister-in-law was failing to do her functions as needed they advocated for him, worked hard to overcome roadblocks & get change. And finally got him into a hospital for his last days. I cannot say enough about the care as well as the communication they supplied to keep us abreast of the situation and explain what was going on. If there were a 6 star rating, I would give it. read more

Heartland Hospice will provide care and assistance, if and when, it is convenient for them. If your loved one can manage to die, or your questions and need for assistance can arise Mon-Fri 9-5 you might stand a chance of getting their attention. They promised that a hospice nurse would meet my brother at the house when he brought our father home from the hospital but that proved inconvenient for them so they came the next day. When I arrived Friday afternoon to take over care of my father from my brother they promised him they would phone me to see if I had any questions, they did not get around to phoning me until 2 days later. In the final 7 hours of my father's life I was desperate to have an immediate question answered over the phone and for a nurse to come ASAP. None of the night nurses answered their phones so no one could answer my question and 5 hours later they sent a supervisor to the house. Shortly after her arrival, when it appeared to me that my father had fallen into a coma, the nurse asked me if my father usually slept with his eyes open; which obviously made me question her nursing ability. She then left the house and when my father died 15 minutes after her departure I had to call her back to request that she return to declare him dead. These people are shameful in all ways. We still cannot figure out how they were able to get to my father in the hospital and have him sign a contract with them immediately after he was declared terminally ill. read more
