I came Here last weekend for a quick bite to eat. Their menu is more extensive than I expected so it took a while for me to decide. I decided to go with the turkey blt, which also came with cheese. The sandwich was about $12 and came with chips, which isn't bad. The sandwich was also huge! Honestly, I was not expecting to get such a big sandwich! The woman at the counter asked if I wanted to try their special sauce, which I immediately said yes! It's a green sauce that comes in a squeeze bottle, but don't let that intimidate you! The sauce is delicious! It is a little spicy but not too spicy, with tons of flavor. I kept having to put more on my plate and I could only imagine how good it tastes on their traditional Ethiopian dishes! Besides enjoying my food, the service was great! The lady working was very friendly and hospitable. Checking in on me and asking if I needed anything. I didn't expect that since it appeared more like a corner store, coffee shop vibe! But I was left pleasantly surprise by the service. They do brunch on the weekends and I look forward to coming back and trying their Ethiopian breakfast. A small spot and easy to miss! I made a quick visit to DC to see a dear friend, and when I was there I was told this was the must-see spot. And I can see why! When my friend and I walked in, it was clear my companion was a regular. They were greeted very affectionately by the super friendly staff running the restaurant, and that already made me feel at home. The menu is EXTENSIVE and borderline overwhelming. The woman staffing the front check in could see it on my face: she asked "first time?". There's a lot of food here, of various types of Cuisine. You really can't go wrong and there's something for everyone. But I LOVE Ethiopian food and so I ordered the Ethiopian vegetarian platter which was exceptional. I also ordered a peach tea. BE WARNED: The sweet tea is TOO SWEET. If you like sweet things, order your tea half sweet / half unsweet, or it may be undrinkable. I was lucky my friend told me! They have great drip and they always warm up my almond milk w/out me asking. The inside is also cute and comfortable...very casual and inviting. There is also free WiFi. They get extra points for their Ethiopian hot sauce (it's a business run by a family of Ethiopians) because I almost died... in a good way. I love it spicy! Tobasco is such an out-dated and uncharmingly tangy hot sauce and I cringe when I see it. Give me the good stuff! The food experience was a 4 star overall. Fancy sandwiches are crafted in an Instagrammable space with steep price tags. Heat Da Spot is the anti-thesis of Sundevich. It's a local spot in a run down building with an eccentric menu from Ethiopian breakfast to coffee to meatball subs. It caters to DC locals. Yelp doesn't lie and Heat Da Spot is beating Sundevich. Any shop that has a 5 star rating and hundreds of reviews is worth your time. Here's why you must go to Heat Da Spot: 1) Food: It's just good. People rave about the breakfast, but if you go for lunch, order any of their sandwiches. My meatball sandwich was the best I've had ever and it comes with your own personal "secret sauce" (it's a green spicy sauce) and chips. For drinks, grab a Boylan orange soda or a cold glass of water the owner personally delivers to your table. 2) Staff: They are the friendliest people you'll meet in the city and take their business seriously in a welcoming way. A sign by the register says they craft their food with love and they deliver it that way too. Their kindness is contagious. 3) Price: Sundevich is across the street and they make an excellent sandwich, but it's significantly pricier than Heat Da Spot. Oh em gee! This spot is so amazing! How did I not know about this local gem before? Apparently it's a fan favorite and for GOOD reason. I came here with a girlfriend around 1030 am on a Sunday morning. There were already many people there, which is always a good sign. We walked in and quickly got in line to order our food at the register. Because we wanted to reserve a seat so that we could sit down as soon as we ordered, we asked these two lovely women (read: strangers) if they mind holding two seats for us. (NOTE: There is outdoor, dog friendly, seating on the patio, but we wanted to sit indoors, where there is a bench, high table, and cute couch décor). This is just a testament to the type of café this is (as we learned these two women were regulars there), they happily held our seats for us, and couldn't stop speaking about how awesome this dining spot is. We were sold before we even ordered the food! Ok so we're in line. Talk about a plethora of options! I was in the mood for breakfast so I ordered a veggie omelet and a waffle. I also ordered an Ethiopian coffee. My total order was $15! As my new favorite word is **budget** I was very pleased with the price. I also wanted to try to Ethiopian breakfast, but I will save that for a different day. Additionally, they serve Ethiopian brunch starting at 1230 pm (which is also something I will come back and try)! My food came out quickly, and it was so delicious! I LOVE Heat Da Spot. LOVE. The entire family/staff is so nice, so welcoming and the food is really good. I always get the Ethiopian breakfast or the Ful, and it is always perfect. Plus they have a homemade hot sauce that adds so much flavor! I just cannot overstate how kind and generous they are with everyone, and though they are a pretty new restaurant, they have really good relationships with long time Georgia Ave. residents who have lived on that block for generations (which is a part of my litmus test for a welcoming space - and is definitely not true of every new restaurant on Georgia Ave.). They are great, and I hope they are here for a long, long time! At the rate I go there, I feel like I'm doing my small part to help keep them in business. :) One more thing, re: COVID-19, I went to order take-out yesterday. They still have socially distant outdoor seating, and they pack the food up really well for to-go orders (I called ahead and it was ready in less than 20 minutes). So I came on a Friday around 1030 during the Covid era. There is only outdoor seating which I think is appropriate for this time. In regards to my food I got the French toast platter or 1099 and then I just got a juice over in the refrigerator. In regards to the food it was good it just wasn't exceptional. The French toast was 7 out of 10 the eggs were 8 out of 10 the sausage was 7 out of 10. What I really appreciated about this place was the service. Our server was very attentive and checked up on this regularly. You could very much tell that he wanted you to have a good experience. BUT i was visiting from out of state and if anything came to try. What a find. This was a spontaneous Plan B when our intended destination had no outdoor seating (just takeout). Did a quick Yelp search and found a 5-star rated place just a block away. We walked over and admittedly were unsure. But as we poked inside, we received the warmest welcome. And we were all hungry. We were told an outdoor table would open up soon and sure enough, one did. It was diligently wiped down by the owner who was wearing a mask - as we were. We ordered an array of brunch items including eggs, waffles (with blueberries) and coffees. Loved everything about this spot! We were originally headed to another breakfast place nearby, but the line was out of the door and we weren't up for waiting in the cold. After a quick search on the Yelp app, we found this place just a few blocks away. As soon as we walked in, we felt cozy. There are some bar stools available, but also more lounge furniture throughout. It's not very big, but everyone was respectful about sharing space. We scanned the menu on the walls and settled on what we assumed would be a standard breakfast sandwich. I was so happy and surprised to get one of the best sandwiches I've had in DC. The croissant was hot, flaky and buttery. The eggs were cooked perfectly and had some seasoning that I didn't recognize, but loved. Then they put this green sauce on the side that is full of flavor. I'm telling you - it was delicious. And inexpensive! We really liked the coffee too. To top it off, the service was great. I cannot get enough of this place! The coffee is the best in DC, no competition. I work out of a WeWork location, which provides free coffee from La Colombe, and I hate it! I've been spoiled for the Ehtiopian Coffee that Heat Da Spot serves. So much that I started buying their coffee grounds so I can brew my own at home with my Keurig. The food... there hasn't been one meal that I didn't get upset about because it was so good. I can't understand how the food is so flavorful and satisfying. The chefs say it's the love that they cook it with. It has to be, because there's no other place in DC that provides a better food experience. From the taste to the service Heat Da Spot maintains 5-star excellence. Today I had the grilled chicken burger with crispy fries and their "Secret Sauce". I cannot wait for them to start selling that sauce! They say it's coming soon. My girlfriend had their personalized pizza... we both ate in silence lol the food is so good we didn't want to ruin the experience. They truly set the standard for quality & hospitality.
